His dad would have done this. In Jaws 2, he went chest deep into the water to get some drift wood, and ended up finding a burnt skeleton. And he knew there was a shark out there.

There’s plenty of things that would have made the movie better. Sean not dying, better special affects, no stupid no reason flashbacks and the Shark not wanting revenge at all

All they had to do was rewrite a few scenes and some of the plot... hide the Effects mistakes and it would of been a good film.

I hate this movie for this scene alone. Scarred me more than the first film. It's so visceral and there's a nastiness to it that sticks with me.

Apparently, it was originally Chief Martin Brody himself in this scene who would've been killed by the shark.
Ultimately this didn't happen, probably because Roy Schneider didn't fancy doing it (can you blame him?) and killing the protagonist of the first two films off like this would've caused resentment. So they went halfway and had his son be killed by the shark.

Thank god for that. Martin wouldn’t have been stupid enough to scream at the edge of the bite after a shark already hopped up once. He would’ve drove that boat back to shore with one arm and told everyone in town how they have another shark problem.

Despite that Jaws: The Revenge is the only film in this franchise with a PG-13 rating (the three other films were only rated PG), it's not nearly as graphic or as gory as Jaws or Jaws 3-D. Sean's death is brutal, but it's not quite as extreme as Quint's death (Jaws), Overman's death (Jaws 3-D), Alex's death (Jaws...and a kid, no less), or Calvin's nephew's death (Jaws 3-D).
Jaws 2 is the least graphic or gory in the franchise, hence why I didn't include it. Of course, that's not to say that it's not intense, but it doesn't have the level of violence or gore that the other Jaws films had.

PG 13 was introduced in 1984. the gambling scene alone makes this movie PG 13.

Its a misinterpretation. The revenge is by Mrs. Brody, because sharks have caused her and her family a lot of pain.
And with Sean's death, Marge's sacrifice was all for nothing! The producers who made this trash film should be ashamed of themselves!

The original script had the spark under control of a voodoo witch doctor, but that was cut from the plot prior to filming. I believe the book adaptation included the voodoo aspect.
