Red Fox Mom Caring for 13 Babies All by Herself

A family of red foxes live in a den in Paradise Valley, Montana. After their dad was hit and killed by a car their mom is somehow able to support 13 babies all by herself.

Very true. We think that actually happened in this case. What we found amazing is that her mate was killed (run over by a car) and she was still able to feed 13 growing babies all by herself. Not surprisingly she spent most of her time hunting.

Wow! I have a fox in my backyard now with 8 kits! Sometimes I wonder if they get enough food but I see rabbits and squirrels around the den all the time. Wonderful parents!

Since you know Paradise Valley you may be interested to know their den was visible from Hwy 89 about 10 miles south of Livingston on the west side of the road. I normally wouldn't say that in public but they aren't there anymore. Just wanted to give you an area to think about when you think of them. I don't know how that vixen supported all of those babies. Her mate was hit by a car and killed but she kept going. She would stash ground squirrels near the den without letting the babies see her and then she would come to the den with a mouth over flowing with ground squirrels. That was fun to watch as the babies attacked.

It was a number of years ago. I think 2013. They were in Paradise Valley several miles north of that campground on the Yellowstone River. We haven't seen or heard of them since then.
