    My 16” shoots Barnes 130’s very well at just under 3000 fps. Also, it likes 150 accubonds and 165 sciroccos. It’s a great tool for saddle hunting and slipping thru the woods. Great video! Thx

    My 20" SFAR shoots 168 grain Barnes the best so far. Looking for one good factory hunting load and one good factory range/defense load. Kind of spoiled by my .270 bolt action shooting under 1 MOA. Thanks for sharing.

      Nice! Thanks for sharing your experience. Mine seems to like the heavier stuff as well. 178gr ELD shoot very good and will most likely be my hunting load.

    Thanks for the update Chris. Seems much better than your previous barrel! Glad to see it’s working right now. That’s about what I’ve seen except every now and then I’ll get one to group down to about 1” or lower but it’s now consistent. Also, mine typically likes lower grain weights 150 and lower and come to think of my best groups are usually ball ammo 😂😂

      Yea man I’m happy this thing is finally doing good. I’ll probably circle back to some plinking loads, but really wanted to dial in some hunting loads to see what it likes. Pretty sure I’m going to run those Federal 175gr Ascent loads as they’ll work on deer and elk. Still running the stock trigger, but have thought about swapping for something a tad better… we will see! Thanks for stopping by, always appreciate it!

      @@dabears52501 What's up man! Been a long time. I need to go back and search your channel I don't get posts from you showing up anymore. Yah, I like the trigger. Is it as good as my Geissele triggers? probably not but for how good (lol, bad) I shoot I can't tell enough of a difference.

      @@triggerbarPhDI can't justify the price of a Geissele for the minimal improvement over the factory trigger. Just my opinion.

    I'm glad you are happy with it now. I was really surprised the Berger shot that poorly. Great video Brother and it definitely likes the Ascent

    • @ChristianGrest
      @ChristianGrest  Місяць тому

      Persistence has paid off I reckon. Definitely didn’t like the Bergers, but that could’ve just been the cartridge manufacturer and what powder they used, who knows. But I have a number of loads now to choose from to hunt with this year. I’ll probably buy some more and do some fine tuning.!

    when I first got mine used, the groups were meh, the gas adjust was stuck , the bolt rings were broke and the forend was touching the barrel. Ruger fixed the gas adjust, I made the other repairs, the groups went from meh, to ok. Then I put my hand load thru it, LC cases, 147 FMJ blems, CFE powder and it shoots TEN shot two inch groups. I also delveloped a 174 grain lead gas check load for it that does nicely with the gas setting on zero

    • @ChristianGrest
      @ChristianGrest  Місяць тому

      That’s awesome! I may try handloading for mine at some point, but plenty happy with the accuracy now.. it probably shoots better with a better shooter than I am anyways. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  • @sixty9vette
    @sixty9vette 16 днів тому +1

    Mine's about the same. The gas block was touching the handguard, so I swapped it out with the Aero adjustable, which is much smaller and allows for lots of clearance. I haven't tested it yet, but hopefully soon.

    • @ChristianGrest
      @ChristianGrest  16 днів тому

      Mine isn’t touching, but I also swapped out for the Midwest handguard. That Aero gas block should get you what you need. Had I not gotten the gas system ironed out my plan was to pick up a Rifle Speed gas system. Let me know how the Aero gas block works for you. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for sharing your comments on the accuracy test. I will purchasing the two Fedra loads you used to see how they work with my rifle. I will also be more than happy with those results as hunting loads since the SFAR is not a precision rifle to begin with.

  • @jlalbee

    I would call this only mediocre accuracy. I don't think the SFAR, particularly the 16" barrel, works well with these heavy bullets (170gr+)

    • @ChristianGrest
      @ChristianGrest  16 днів тому

      @@jlalbee Ruger tested with the 168 Fed Gold match, but I’m more interested in hunting loads. I think the lightest hunting loads I’ve messed with were 150gr, but not with the new barrel. I plan on circling back to some of those at some point, but the accuracy I’ve had from those loads are plenty for my use. I don’t expect sub MOA out of this… especially not on a regular basis with my me behind the trigger.

    I have the 20 inch and it shoots Hornady American Whitetail 150gr SP interlock really well. Like you I fed it a bunch of different stuff and the cheaper American Whitetail performed just as well as any of them. Same as in my Ruger Precision 6.5 Creedmoor with American Whitetail 129gr SP interlock. You might want to give it a try.

    • @ChristianGrest
      @ChristianGrest  Місяць тому

      The Hornady Whitetail is an underrated cartridge. I’ve run the 6.5CM with great success. I didn’t have some for this rifle that I shot with the old barrel and it didn’t care for it, but might need to run it again. If I can get it to shoot anything like these, that’s a no brainer.

    Best match ammo for the price in your opinion, sir?

    • @ChristianGrest
      @ChristianGrest  Місяць тому

      Well for this rifle it seems it likes the Federal Premium stuff. When had the barrel replaced by Ruger(watch that video if you haven’t already) they got sub 1” 5 shot groups either Federal Gold Metal match 175gr I believe. Thats a great place to start in my opinion. Now for hunting ammo, seems most of the Federal ammo is pretty descent and so is the Hornady.
      Hope this helps atleast a little bit.

    Why are you measuring groups like that? That skewed the true results

    • @ChristianGrest
      @ChristianGrest  Місяць тому

      How so? Please explain… there’s a ton of different ways folk do group testing. I measure center to center to size a 5 shot group. For my testing this is the way I’ve always done it to keep consistency between testing.

    • @scottt6794
      @scottt6794 Місяць тому

      @@ChristianGrest well if you shoot a group you measure all shots from edge to edge not pick 3 of the 5.

    • @ChristianGrest
      @ChristianGrest  Місяць тому +2

      @@scottt6794 I appreciate your comment, but did you not see the 5 shot group measurements? I did an additional 3 shot measurement because many folk use 3 shot groups. If the 5 shot is what you’re concerned with, just ignore the other data point.

    • @ChristianGrest
      @ChristianGrest  Місяць тому

      It's been putting out decent accuracy since the barrel change. It's not a match rifle by any means, but plenty accurate. If you watch the groups on this video and my previous video with the test target sent back with it after the barrel change.
