I have a Tesla X, and I live in Norway, where we have rain followed by cold - temperatures. The truth is that Tesla's frameless door design does not work in this climate unless you have a garage where you can keep your car dry and warm.
I can’t explain how frustrating it is to have the front door window freeze. The windows need to go slightly down to open the door safely, and I have experienced them getting stuck to the rubber seal when there’s some ice buildup.
Pre-conditioning the vehicle’s cabin temperature can help, but sometimes, it’s not enough. It takes a long time and drains the battery.
Tesla should offer standard doors in wet and cold Scandinavians climate. It's not practical and expensive for owners and Tesla Repair Center.

Apply with a rag moistened with the lubricant for better control and no overspray.

That's exactly what I was gonna say, no need to spray like that and make it more difficult, while you can spray the rag.

Any silicone lubricant spray should work when applied with a applicator pad or soft rag. There's many of options as long as you wipe it off some examples are wd-40 , fluid film, cooking spray, any kind of spray wax or paste wax is better. My personal favorite is a product made by DuPont....snow & ice non-stick clear coating with Teflon in it. It's made for like snow plows and snow blowers etc...it's usually available at Walmart in the auto or motorcycle section

The pre-refresh Model S had much smoother softer seals, a mobile tech told me they were experiencing tearing and premature wear so they went with the new rougher seals.

I have a Subaru Forester, vintage '07 which has frameless doors and rubber molding strips. Never had a freezing/sticking problem with it, nor any freezing problems at all. Of course, I live in FL! LOL.

It's so Silicon Valley that someone wrote a complex AI trying to learn from your private calendar (busy futuristic people always put things in their calendar!) but there is no simple "preheat every weekday at 07:30" setting.

Spray lots of WD-40 inside your door panels , lots .... before you get really cold weather.... and your windows won’t freeze 🥶..... rubber seals put silicone seal on them , on glass use glass treatment that changes the surface tension .... use -45 windshield solution in your water bottle at all times , replace your wiper blades every year , use Michelin Snow Tires in Winter . Drive Super Carefully, have a shovel and Food and Blankets in your car and Flares

    Silicon polish may be better.
    More precise.
Once it hardens, it should last much longer.
Won't impregnate the seal, leave marks.
All speculation, but worth trying first?

talc powder works great too for seals. And that avoid the silicon (especially regarding paint)

I think the weather striping is rough to reduce sticking. Have you ever tried to stick a suction cup to a rough surface... No can do...I think that was their mindset.

I think my problem is iceing at the bottom of the frame on the door as the window remains stuck after it is away from the frame of the car. It also seems to actually happen most after I am inside the car and have been driving in snow for a while, how do I fix this?

  • @jamespaul2587

Thanks Trevor, those are great tips for the door seals, for any vehicle really. I'm surprised that the 3 in 1 lubricant doesn't have the red "straw nozzel extender thing" like WD40 cans do to direct the flow more precisely, maybe the straw could be used universally? Do you find your window motors slow on cold days? My LEAF has that issue on the driver's side mainly.

Frameless doors are high maintenance stuff in my opinion.
It actually makes me less like the car, ads a layer of complexity I don't need :) is it just me?

100 percent agree. Always worry about that in my car, and it’s just so unnecessary. Makes me envy cars with normal framed windows.

    • @F32_Rocket
      @F32_Rocket 2 місяці тому

Every vehicle I have owned has had framed windows. I now drive a BMW sports coupe with frameless windows. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Just gotta use common sense and patience in the winter. Or call an Uber 😂😂
Btw, Honda makes and sells an exceptional product for exactly the purpose of this video, protecting/lubricating door and window seals. Yes, Honda Motor Company. It's called "Shin Etsu." You can buy it at any Honda dealership parts department.
Trusted by many techs and mechanics all over. I've even seen Porsche and Mercedes techs use this stuff. Most of them keep a tube in their toolbox.
I'm just saying, if you're going to buy a $90k+ Tesla, you might want to protect your investment with something better than WD-40. 😉 But, hey, you do you

Model 3 doesn't have this feature, partially because it's not very smart. People found it randomly heating the car when it wasn't needed. Only works if your schedule is the exact same every day.
Also, mobile service is pretty good now, you probably wouldn't need to take your car to Oakville.
