I learned this from some GnR bio book: Axl got off the bus in LA in a very dangerous part of town. Some old black guy saw him and yelled “You know where you are? You’re in the jungle baby! You’re gonna diiiie!” And that was his introduction to LA.
The 80s was the best era for rock. My dad raised me on it and I definitely got mocked in school for not knowing current artists, but the 80s was where it’s at. Other great ones are Def Leppard ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’, Scorpions ‘Rock You Like A Hurricane’, and Night Ranger ‘Sister Christian’. There are so many more, but this comment would go on forever.
Funny I both Bill Bailey Axl Rose sounds really cool as names but Axl Bailey or Bill Rose wouldn't work as well. If I don't remember wrong I think Bailey was his step dads name and Rose his bio dads name (and wasn't he murdered or something).
Welcome! I am a 30 year old Black woman and I remember hearing about GnR from those "I love the 70s/80s/90s" shows back in the early 2000s. I had a phase where I was OBSESSED with them when I was a teenager and I am kind of back in it again because I've been doing this deep dive of rock music from Los Angeles. Anyway! lol I absolutely love Guns N Roses and this song is such an epic debut to the larger music world. They came up during the club scene in the 80s on Sunset Strip. They were a pretty formidable band and so unlike the glam metal bands for their time period. I believe the quote was they were Aerosmith meets the Sex Pistols. The scene at the time was pretty good but GnR was like a punch in the face probably. I hope you get more into them, particularly the Appetite for Destruction album. They're all still rocking and rolling in their 60s.
This debut record was the biggest debut ever. It had 5 or six singles and every track is 10/10. Wouldn't watch them live, Wouldn't do too much after that 1st album but Holy Shit! I own that in vinyl and don't even have a record player 😅
Guns and Rose's is a force to be reckoned with! Axl Rose's gritty vocals, and Slash's wailing guitar are always a treat! My favorite is November Rain! Also check out Paradise City!🎙🎶🎸🥁🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I grew to respect these guys more when I got older. Really talented musicians before the overuse of tech entered in. Slash has some great recent stuff out there too.

Hes not talking about the "famous life". Hes talking about the streets of Los Angeles. When Axl Rose (the singer) was 20 years old he was forced to move away from his hometown: Lafayette, a small town in Indiana. He moved to Los Angeles with no money and just a bus ticket. The start of the video you see him arrive in LA for the first time and the first thing he sees is a guy walking up to him trying to sell him weed. Then you see him turn from this young innocent boy to this dirty, dangerous ish maniac which is the results of living in the big city, especially the streets where he slept for months. The concrete jungle

Then you really gotta check out Motely Crew: Kickstart My Heart. I was lucky enough to see Guns & Roses with Metallica right before James Hetfield got hurt by onstage Pyrotechnics a few weeks later. ua-cam.com/video/5e3sI5xkA0M/v-deo.html
The short guitar intro is Voodoo child by Jimmy Hendrix.
Look at your young men fighting
Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they've always done before
Look at the hate we're breeding
Look at the fear we're feeding
Look at the lives we're leading
The way we've always done before
My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands, time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars
D'you wear a black armband when they shot the man
Who said, "Peace could last forever"?
And in my first memories, they shot Kennedy
I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall in D.C. to remind us all
That you can't trust freedom when it's not in your hands
When everybody's fightin' for their promised land and
I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich, while it buries the poor
You're power-hungry, sellin' soldiers in a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh?
I don't need your civil war
Ooh, no, no, no, no, no, no
Look at the shoes you're filling
Look at the blood we're spilling
Look at the world we're killing
The way we've always done before
Look in the doubt we've wallowed
Look at the leaders we've followed
Look at the lies we've swallowed
And I don't want to hear no more
My hands are tied
For all I've seen has changed my mind
But still, the wars go on, as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
And all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars
I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich, while it buries the poor
You're power-hungry, sellin' soldiers in a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh?
I don't need your civil war
