- National treasure and proud Bristolian Stephen Merchant struck gold when he collaborated with Ricky Gervais on a little comedy series called The Office in the early 2000s. Buoyed by their TV success, Stephen and Ricky branched out into a brand new medium and became one of the pioneers of podcasting. The Ricky Gervais Show became the most downloaded podcast in the world at the time, securing them a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Stephen has won three BAFTAs, two Golden Globes and a Primetime Emmy for The Office and The US Office. He is here to talk about series three of his excellent BBC and Amazon Prime comedy The Outlaws, which is out now.
Stephen Merchant loves fine-dining and smoked food and so is very keen to sample Angela’s smoked mackerel with spinach baked eggs. The experts at Waitrose pair the meal with a delicious Le Bijou Rosé de Sophie Valrose.
This episode of Dish is one of our funniest yet; Stephen has Nick, Angela and the crew laughing all the way through brunch. Listen out for hilarious anecdotes on family holidays, oysters and why he is overdue an Order of the British Empire.

We can’t all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help.
Send your dilemmas to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she’ll try to answer in a future episode.
Dish is a S:E Creative Studio production for Waitrose
Poor Angela, thinking she's just making some nice nosh for a British comedian, only to be confronted with S. Merchant, Michelin Star Restaurant Critic 😅
He’s a national treasure
I really enjoyed the faux-tiff between OBE Angela and National Treasure Smerch.
I didn't like it. Did you really like it?
Gotta love the British sense of humour 😂
Why didn't you like it?
I'm quite interested in the reasoning for this, if you will allow the pleasure. @@amandajohnstone696
Stephen Merchant AND Dish? I've never clicked so fast in my life.
THIS. 🙌🏻
Yess🎉
D-bag who thinks he's more entertaining than Karl Pilkington

Please put this man on taskmaster.
What she said! Best casting idea ever!
I remember Alex mentioned Merchant being one of the contestants he'd like to have on TM, but Stephen is quite a busy man and TM filming takes a while..so.
The three tallest men on tv.
He maybe could do the one-off Christmas/ New Year special. Those are done over a week, I believe I heard one of the Andy's say. But, the man is busy..
Merchant and Fry. Or, A Steven series...
Angela. What a babe
honestly
Absolutely
Love her . Her laughter is so genuine
Could listen to Stephen all day, reminds me of the old brilliant XFM show 📻
Eyes bulging with imagined dishes.
Beat me to it! 😅
Gx you've done him, play a record
It's the mammal.... right....that's got....sort of...the pointiest eyes. Eyes that pop out of our their head......... Steve.
Of course he’s come for a free meal. He was gutted he couldn’t get £20 off buying a PlayStation 2 and Grand Theft Auto 3
This man has had a chaotic lifestyle since he was a kid!!! Such a fun interview 🤣🤣
honestly one of the best Dish episodes yet. Love this guy, so hilarious and what a great guest. When does Ricky appear, I am sure Angela could whip up a lovely vegan dish for him!
nah he wouldnt fit the nice vibe
@@boxedlife789Oh Ricky Gervais is wonderful. I would love to see him on this
Comedy mogul and national treasure Merchant's death rattle heard while finagling £30 Waitrose gift bag by tearing down local parsnip farmer's claim to fame.
Eyes bulging with imagined riches
Stephen Merchant is hilarious but i am so surprised he hasn't heard the phrase 'he can put his shoes under my bed'. I heard women saying that 50 years ago when i was a kid.
This brought back a memory to me of an extremely buttoned up older lady I worked with. During lunch one day she said this about our coworker who was 30 years younger than her.
Wish this went on longer, was great fun!
National Treasure Stephen Merchant! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🏅
This podcast with Steven is brilliant, so so funny, a great man!
Just love DISH - listening to the podcast & then watching it - keep them coming Angela, Nick, the Dish Team, Waitrose, & SE:Creative ❤

Deffo is a national treasure ye Olde Merchant!
Get Karl on!
Yes, Karl Pilkongton would be a great get!
What a laugh!
The guests are always good . Stephen Merchant excelled . Nich is delightful . But Angela is the star every time . Her laughter is so honest . She is definitely top of my 10 people to invite to my imaginary dinner party list , she would be so much fun !
National Treasure Stephen Merchant ❤
I haven't had a proper laugh in years until I caught this podcast today... Cheers, mate! ❤
You haven't laughed in years? Have you been in prison?
@@neilm3955a mental prison. Prisoners have laughs
What a guest 🥰🥰🥰 this show gets better and better
Stephen Merchant National Treasure! 🫡
That was such a delightful episode 🤍
Sooo bloody good!
~ Saying Massive Attack (allegedly) means speaking to Banksy, as well. Happy they mentioned Trip-Hop and those Bristol pioneers (including Tricky and Portishead). That scene and time in music is very influential to my growth as an artist.
It’s interesting to think of podcasts as a saturated market. I’d imagine television and film to be quite saturated, as a former Film/Media studies major.
Did Angela say "Unami" instead of "Umami" when talking about the smoked mackerel? 🤔
This is easily the most unlikely podcast you’d find in my favourites list when looking at everything else I watch. Love this show!
He’s brilliant!
28K views, I am responsible for at least 1/3 of that
Love you all! Can not get enough of you Angela and Nick. And the guests are fabulous ! Stephen today is great- fine grub!
If Stephen is not a national treasure, I don’t know which way is up.
Merchant, you look so good clean shaven! You should keep this look!
Hello from Croatia! ❤
Can someone tell me why Kippers are popular in the UK? As an American I am intrigued but also have no idea where to even try them in the states
They aren't in the UK really, not in the South West I don't think!
you can still find them in the US. wiki details their popularity
Look for "herring". That's likely why
Love this podcast
Thank you DISH for thiss! ❤❤❤
Stephen Merchant far funnier than Ricky Gervais.
He should be everyone's Dim Shardashian. He is what we have a comedy ledge left, so let's like, make the most of him.
Utterly brilliant interview x❤
i miss steve. i listen to him and karl and rick every night to sleep. hes underrated
This is fabulous!!! My favorite person!!! 😂❤❤❤❤❤❤
My Dad used to cook kippers outside or in his garage as my Mum refused to have the smell in the house. They are delicious.
Eyes that pop out their head…. Steve
I love how they all made each other belly laugh!
Best one yet
Oh my goodness, I just love Stephen Merchant, just hilarious in every way. He is a national treasure!
lol, “I smell it in my curtains on a Wednesday “
xfm sleep youtube videos and long combos of podcasts would have made him a billionaire by now. sorry steve
Did Merch get the oyster tsunami whilst filming Travel Man in Dubrovnik (with other National Treasure Richard Ayoade)?
Seared? Ever bake a fish in aluminum ? The pronunciation is not lost on me ha.. cheeky
Steve still has debt collectors after Karl for that 50p change he pocketed.
Yank i always think that every now and again u catch a glimpse in Stephen Merchants eye of chaotic revelry that i bind wonderfully unhinged 😂
every day i thank the stars that I get to watch the videos of the DISH podcasts! this with the national treasure sir stephen merchant was absolutely hilarious!

Yees, shout out to Massive Attack and Banksy. Didn't know that Stephen was a Bristolian too!
Really enjoyable interview. Can I have some more please?
why do smerch and gervais never mention eachother?
Men in Black 2 was his best work, and too bad he didn;t win any awards for it.
