This is a masterclass in storytelling from Merchant. He makes it easy for the questioner, he makes it engaging for the audience, he knows what stories he's going to tell in advance, and he's worked out that two x three minute funny stories are exactly what the format needs.
I don’t think there’s any doubt about it, he’s tall and long. When he gets all of his long appendages coordinated, I imagine it all goes off without a hitch.

Growing up in London, Ontario, Canada I had a buddy (Phil) who moved to our town from London, England when he was an infant, and who used to tell the story of how, before they were married, his parents would take the train into central London together to get to work, and more often than not, there was this obnoxious guy on the train who kept hitting on my friend's mom, even though it was obvious she was with her boyfriend. Eventually things got to the point where Phil's dad had no choice but to pull the guy aside and beat the crap out of him, which more or less put an end to his overtures. Fast forward a few years and they've moved on to Canada and who should turn up on the television but the same guy from the train - Michael Jagger, and his band The Rolling Stones. Throughout our teenage years and until I lost touch with him sometime in the 80's we always used to introduce him at parties as "this is Phil; his dad beat up Mick Jagger!" 🤣
"You need to prime someone for a Jagger." Fwah-ha-ha such a great quote. I adore Merchant. Honestly I love BOTH Stephen's. (I have a little brother also named Stephen ❤)
See Fallon, this is how a great talk show host is suppose to act when he hears jokes from his guests, laughed but with no or very little sound so not to be picked up by the microphones. Don't laughed and talk loudly. Let your guests be in the spotlight.
@@blueabattoirI never badmouth Fallon. I think he’s funny I think every nighttime host is different from each other which is good. I guess what I’m trying to say is I love Jimmy Fallon I love Stephen Colbert I love Jimmy Kimmel yada yada yada.
From Xfm - The Office - The Steve Show - Extra's - Hello Ladies (the Series AND the stand up Special) - to the 3 seasons of The Outlaws. - I'm just so incredibly proud of him. - He has such a clever sense of comedy and is a genuinely kind person. (Btw... i saw your Mum and Dad's cameo on season 3 Steve, great touch!)
I was gonna comment the exact same thing! I absolutely LOVE Curb Your Enthusiasm and I remember Ricky Gervais made a cameo in it. Plus Stephen is putting Bristol on Hollywood's map! Legendary writer/comedian, I could imagine how hilarious a series co written by Stephen Merchant and Larry David would be! 😂
I can't be the only one who was so invested in his last tale and got whiplash from hearing Donald and Melania. The shorter Stephen also struggled to give a comeback lol
His appearance on Norm McDonald's show was hilarious. He said to Norm something like "you don't have many black people or women on this show" and Norm quickly replied "well yeah, it's supposed to be a comedy show"
For different reasons, and at "uncanny level", these two have always reminded me of my best friend from childhood, who went to Northwestern like Colbert; and I have always idolized them both...So cool for me to see them in conversation. And btw, if you look really closely, you'll see that Merchant's glasses lenses are totally convex to keep his eyeballs from rubbing against them.
They told me to never, never, ever, disconnect myself from my management rail, or I would die. But we're out of options here, so be ready to catch me, on the off chance that I'm not dead the moment I pop off this thing.
I am a The Office is The Office, the American one is the American one. The OG is one of the greatest shows of all time. It was so special and unique when it came out.
Colbert's not even that short! He publicly lists his height as 5'11, which is an inch or so above the median average for male Caucasian Americans. Merchant is just freakishly tall!
Still love Hello Ladies. Watch it over and over. Brilliantly subtle UK - CA humour but possibly lost on the average viewer. Shame it didn’t continue (besides the movie)
"You can't always get what you want." 😆😆😆 Oh, he probably got a kick out of that. There has to be nothin' better than a fan who actually _knows_ your work.
Stephen Merchant is so clever and quick witted. Just the best. So happy he was on the show.
He's is the perfect example for the British witty ,awkward humor. Thank you .👏
Bravo for having this brilliant fella on your show. More please!
I love Stephen Merchant. He tells such great stories and says them with gusto!
“If Mick Jagger is the Butler who owns the house”…..😂🤣😂🤣
that line killed me XD!!

I've always loved Stephen Merchant. He was absolutely hilarious on Extras and has always been equally funny on every talk show appearance.
I love that Colbert met him to handshake and stood on the step, and Merchant was still towering over him. Steve Merchant is very very tall.
Yes very tall indeed 7 foot +

"what if he's got my eyes", "oh, let's not catastrophize". What a beautiful piece of writing - poetic with a magnificently elongated punchline
He always looks like he's on the verge of tears, and that's so on brand.
Wow, I thought it was just me who thought that! He does, bless him 😊
I always laugh when I think of Stephen Merchant fan-girling over Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory.
Don't have a go at the eyes
He enjoys life and laughter. Fun guest.
Omg I love his stories 😂🫶 Outlaws is fantastic. So pumped for the new season. 💗
I loved Stephen’s role in Portal 2 as Wheatley
He seems to be just as adorkable (though not as overtly idiotic) IRL. He was _perfect!_
Stephen is living an episode of a British sitcom with that Mick Jagger story.
That's a great idea: Sir Mick as the Butler...

I can't believe I've never heard of Stephen Merchant.... I'm going to watch the Outlaws. What a fantastic guy!
The Outlaws is hilarious! Do watch it. 😂
Co-Wrote the original "The Office" in The UK.
I'd strongly recommend "Extras" and "Life's Too Short" that he both has co-written alongside Ricky Gervais, funny as hell :-)
