2P mode in two crude dudes with my cousin brings back great memories. Chugging soda to regain health. Interesting boss fights. Just good times in a co-op title.
Just got out of the hospital perfect timing. I played many Data East games on NES thank god there is Sega Lord X to educate me on the console I wasn't able to own as a kid :)
My best buddy and I spent a “fortune” at the arcades to finish Cap America. Got the MD cartridge and played it over and over again. This same friend got the Sega CD and we loved the Road Avenger intro music. Unfortunately my friend died in a silly car accident in the late 90s. Every episode of this channel reminds me of the good times we had playing games. I tried to find the Road Avenger’s intro music but this version seems to be lost (this music was compressed with the video, not a separated CD track). It was performed by a Japanese group called J-walk (or Jaywalk).
justin goers Thanks, I think I still haven’t digested it yet even after all this time, but it’s good to remember the nice parts. For the music, just search for Road Avenger Sega theme. Here’s one: ua-cam.com/video/OhzlvfJZZ0s/v-deo.html It’s in “Japanenglish”, lyrics are laughable but I really like it (“Wolfteam” voiceover by George Takei, didn’t know at the time because I’m from Brazil and saw Star Trek dubbed in Portuguese).
A lot of them were down to when they were released. A number of games would have benefited greatly probably by having more megs. Genesis was notorious for releasing early games on really tiny carts (memory-wise obviously)
@@JohnDoe-kv3kd I agree, all the reason why I believe the Gen should have launched a yr later at least. Would have benefited the overall hardware package as well. Sega had the bad habit of releasing too much hardware and/or releasing prematurely before the ideal time. At least in my perspective, and history supports.
Midnight Resistance music on the MD is classic! I always really like the sound in the weapon room! Pump it up! The arcade game itself is hard to emulate the controls because of the rotary joysticks.
Data East compilations are everywhere. They even have their own multicarts for the NES and SNES at least (SNES is notable, it has a "yet to be released in final form" Aeon Genesis translation of Magical Drop 2).
Data East were magnificent in the arcade space. Robocop is simply one of my all time favourites, a stunning game that captured the atmosphere of the film. Still love playing it today!
Great video as usual! It would be cool a Technosoft and the Sega Genesis or Toaplan and the Sega Genesis, since they were mostly Genesis developers on consoles.
Chelnov probably is Data East's best arcade conversion to the Mega Drive overall. On a CRT TV it just looks fantastically detailed and coloured. Midnight Resistance needs a proper hack or a remake, just keeping the same music!
Totally agree, I feel like the MD/Gen version's music is a testament to what kind of sound was capable on the system, pretty much makes it my favorite game on the system. If a game is only gonna have 1 main song for the stages, it has to be as epic as Vapor Trail's.
Seriously I want another big collection like the Wii got. I would think at this point they could put out a 50 or more game collection. I don't know who currently owns the majority of these games but they could put out even a digital collection and people would probably snap it.
We got the one on Wii and that's it which is ridiculous. How they haven't put out at least like a digital compilation of like 50 plus games I don't know.
@Daishin no Dōro The sad thing is it would probably be easier to do the arcade version because they wouldn't have to deal with Sega. I mean who owns the rights to these games?! who owns the Data East catalogue?!
Data East was a great under appreciated company back in the day. As a kid I remember playing a ton of Midnight Resistance only to forget the title existed until I found a copy of the Genesis port for a dollar at a thrift store.
Vapor trail is super nostalgic for me. One of the most played Genesis games as a kid. My dad , brother and myself had a blast playing 2player!! Also found out about Atomic Runner and Mega Turrican at a much later age and both have become some of my favorite Genesis games of all time. Both had great graphics and really cool level design. My 2 favorite Data East ports hands down. Uhhh Mega Turrican is sooo good!
I've never tried the Megadrive port of Midnight Resistance since I already got the arcade original, but wow you weren't kidding about the audio upgrade. Seriously thinking about taking the Megadrive port for a spin.
But as with all things it's always better sound but otherwise inferior to the arcade. I mean I feel like if it had come out later in the lifespan of the Genesis it might have gotten a better port.
I was really looking forward to this port when it was released, because Genesis really needed a competent Contra game and this looked like it would fit the bill. Sadly they kinda neutered the port, between it being single-player only, and (understandably) replacing the unique radial control scheme of the arcade with a much jankier adaptation for the control pad. This wasn't an unforgivable sin, but the game was significantly less interesting/fun to play as the arcade had obviously been designed around that radial stick. In the end I just rented it and shrugged at what could have been - if they went a different route with the level design, this could have been an endearing classic!
Joe and Mac was awesome. I had good memories on this game. The 2 player coop was a lot of fun especially when you hit your partner instead of he other caveman. Good old days.
Love most of these games. I play in a pool league and Minnesota Fats is a great game once you learn it and practice. It’s a lot of fun to play now that I’m older. Keep playing it and it will become addicting. Another awesome video as usual !
Its weird Data East never ported Tumblepop to the Sega Genesis. It would've been a good fit alongside Toaplan's Snow Bros. It would've also been cool to see either Night Slashers, Nitroball or Boogie Wings on the platform but oh well... BTW, you should absolutely do an episode about Toaplan games on the Sega Genesis :D (Twin Cobra, Fire Shark, Truxton, Twin Hawk, Snow Bros. Grind Stormer, Slap Fight, Wardner, Hellfire, Zero Wing and MUSHA [Which was published by them in Japan actually!]).
Glad to see my favorite genesis game of all time Vapor Trail getting some love. Not enough people know about it and it's a damn shame, I'm glad that the people who do know about it realize how awesome it is.
Vapor Trail, Midnight Resistance, Mega Turrican...man, those games easily had some of the best music to grace this kickass system if I didn't say so myself. Very solid games too esp Turrican
Mercs and midnight resistance not having 2 player was one of the biggest travesties of the 16bit gen still awesome ports but they could have both been 10/10
Does Sega Lord do beautiful work or what! Hey, Sega of America please respectfully hire this guy as a consultant! Not forgetting our bro in the UK Sega Zombie!👍
I love Captain America and the Avengers, the game had problems being ported to SNes and it was good at Mega. Outrunners is a great game too, besides the divided screen
I like the Avengers game on the Genesis too, very retro! I'm surprised it was never re-released in HD for the Switch. I can't wait for the new Avengers game for the PS4! 🎮
I always liked the different weapons in Atomic Runner. Its definitely on my "To Buy" Genesis lists, thats and Mega Tuirrican(which Im sure is very expensive EDIT just checked...Oh yeah $185 for CIB)
I like outrunners, It can't be like the arcade because only Saturn could do something like that but at least you can have a funny arcade game of out run saga and with 2 player option.
Darwin 4081 needs a little more of love. It is pretty close to the arcade version and the evolution system, while not perfect, it's pretty interesting and more complicated than it looks, with a lot of variations depending of certain conditions and situations. What's really the best thing about the game is its strange music and minimalistic visuals believe it or not.
The music in Darwin 4081 has some tracks that sound identical to another arcade game they released that year, Gondomania. I'm not sure which came first, but I like Gondomania better with its quirky shopping system and rotary stick control.
I miss companies like DATA EAST, Technos, Jaleco and Irem :'( At the end of Zombie Revenge on Dreamcast, It reads out "In Cooperation with Data East" . Didn't know they had a hand in making the game
I feel like Data East was intrinsically connected to the American arcade scene. Once that pretty much was over aka the end of the 90s early 2000s they basically became useless. The fact their death came at the end of the 90s felt very much like the end of an era.
Good to see Outrunners on here but yeah I wasn't a fan of the splitscreen on one player mode, still don't care for it. All these years later I still love Captain America and The Avengers on the Genesis even though it is a little rough around the edges. The SNES version of Side Pocket has one of my favorite soundtracks of all-time.
A great video as always, Data East had a big presence in the Genesis/Megadrive's lifespan. I wonder if you'll cover some recent fan made games for this console? A great example is Cave Story, originally created in 2004 on PC. It's such a faithful port, FM music aside
High Seas Havoc it’s more than you said, it’s not just a “sonic clone” it’s more than that, beautiful animations, an amazing soundtrack and a pretty decent difficulty for new players, it has a lot of personality on his own please people give the attention high Seas Havoc deserves
Think Data East was featured on a recent 8bit guy episode. He did a series on old tech companies in texas and had someone that worked there to talk about his experience back in the day
I like dashin desperatos. The animation was good the graphic its not bad,its colorfull.Had downsides like split screen and be more for kids. But in that time i was 9yrs old and the rush to get the girl at the end, all schemes you could do and drop bombs on your competitor while avoid traps on the way is kind thrilling that time. Its not a bad game. And this creep image of the box,its not the same i had.The box i had they are more cartoon like in the game.
Sega Lord X, thanks for such an interesting list) Actually I tried to play a bit only 2 games of what you presented in this video (Atomic Runner and Side Pocket), but now the interest to them fiered up again!) Because I couldn't beat them back in the childhood) And moreover after the video I'd like to try all the games presented in it (on Genesis, but not CD one) so, I'm going to organize some genesis evenings in the nearest future) Thanks for the vid)
The music for stage 1 of midnight resistance is awesome. Not sure if this or Gotham city streets from Batman (your end theme) is the best stage theme on the genesis.
I played a lot of vapor trail, loved that game, and i always thought the genesis version of two crude dudes/busters was much better. I was never a big fan of high seas havoc, not my cup of tea. Sonic is way better, loved the robocop entrance btw, played a ton of that in the arcades. Captain America had the best version on the genesis, the super nes version was crap. And though the super turrican games are awsome, i think mega turrican is just as good, or better. Love the turrican series
I'm curious why you think the Genesis version of Two Crude Dudes is much better. It has intro music and soda machine smashing between each stage, but other than that, everything else about the arcade version is better to me. Better graphics, animations, musics and sounds, but also better gameplay. Cool video on this topic: ua-cam.com/video/vvp-h9xaacs/v-deo.html
Data East ported Terra Drive onto the Sony PlayStation from the Sega Titan Video while EA got it out from there to the Sega Saturn. Data East published Dark Legend and Defcon 5 for the Saturn in the USA.
Atomic Runner is one of the first handful of games I got for the Megadribve and it really got me interested to further dig into the library just to see what other gems there were to be found. I hadn't heard of Panic before. the detailed art style and animations look great in my opinion but it reminds me of an interactive screensaver moreso than a video game.
I blindly purchased Captain America and the Avengers when it came out. I mean, it came with a pin, so it had to be good. I had no idea until many years later that it received a mixed reception. I was unaware of any bad reviews, but I loved the game in 1992. It also had a neat box art. Much like Midnight Resistance, I thought Captain America received quite an upgrade to the music for the home port. The tunes are pretty great in that game. Data East used some pretty good composers for a bunch of their Genesis games. I still enjoy the game, but I get why others don't like it. The beat-em-up mechanics could be a bit tighter and the game was surpassed on the console by Streets of Rage 2. Captain America is one of those games that would have benefited tremendously from a significantly larger ROM, but I still liked it for what it was. I played it a lot in its day and enjoyed it, but I've always loved beat-em-up games.
Me and my brothers had Side Pocket because my parents loved it. Id put it on just to listen to the music which is nothing less than stellar. I am a huge smooth jazz fan and in the 90s before MP3s and Spotify, it was a way to listen to Japense smooth jazz. As for the game, I still suck at it. But man, that soundtrack is absolutely awesome!
Man finally somebody showing Data East some love!!! Highly under rated and underappreciated dev. One of my faves
2P mode in two crude dudes with my cousin brings back great memories. Chugging soda to regain health. Interesting boss fights. Just good times in a co-op title.
Making them crouch and pressing the grab button to make them look like they were tying their shoelaces never got old for us :D
I noticed Data East's name in the end credits while playing Winter Heat the other day, that was quite a surprise.
The amazing Hitoshi Sakimoto is to thank for the incredible sound for Midnight Resistance!
Just got out of the hospital perfect timing. I played many Data East games on NES thank god there is Sega Lord X to educate me on the console I wasn't able to own as a kid :)

Man, vapor trail is wonderful. Data East produced some fabulous games
Vapor Trail is one of my favorites.
