the Genesis version was rather good, considering the 64 colors on screen at once limit. it plays very well like the arcade. it’s more faithful because of the Motorola 68000 in the Genesis and CPS1 and CPS2.
Konami and Capcom were the two premier arcade game makers and console third party publishers in the late 80s and early 90s and were pretty much Nintendo's second party devs due to being locked into monopolistic contracts. The only thing they were allowed to do for the other consoles was to sell the rights to port/reprogram their arcade games to Sega and Hudson/NEC Avenue. However, when Nintendo's monopoly was ended by a Japanese court, Konami fully embraced the creative freedom and the different hardware capabilities offered by the Mega Drive development, releasing a number of exclusive triple A games that took full advantage of the Mega Drive hardware (see: Rocket Knight Adv, Contra Hard Corps and Castlevania Bloodlines). On the other hand, as SLX said, Capcom was half-assing or outsourcing things from the start, wanting to grab some extra cash from the Mega Drive fans with the least amount of effort involved on their part.
Nintendo never stopped publishers to release games on other hardware. They just wanted to keep exclusives the content that was made for their hardware, which isn't really scandalous since the hardware back then were very different between the different consoles. So we got deifferent games instead of ports. And it's still a pretty standard practice these days with Sony and the exclusivity policy of the PS4.

I don't think I could ever get enough of Sega Genesis videos. I still have my original but recently bought one with HDMI out and a 200 in 1cart. Having a blast.
Very neat video, thanks for the nostalgia! I used to have long arguments with my cousins back in the day over the quality of Capcom ports on the MD (Street Fighter specifically). They had a SNES and they usually flaunted that the Mega Drive was no rival of it, which used to drive me mad (yes, I was a very passionate Sega person then). Too bad the improvement patches weren't at thing at that point in time, or the sound quality issue would have been negligible (still, the Super Street Fighter port for the MD is still superior overall IMO; the SNES one is housed in a cartridge with less ROM, doesn't play as smooth and is even missing some narration samples, if memory serves).
You remember correctly. One of the weirdest omissions from Super Street Fighter 2 on SNES is the voice saying "fight". It really throws me off. I remember the arguments in those days. In reality, when it came to Street Fighter 2(Champion/Turbo), the Genesis, SNES, and even PC Engine all had things going for them in each respective version and which was best would come down to what people valued the most. The Genesis version lacks the most in terms of first impression, colors and voices, but I think it plays the best, has the best music overall, and actually has more background graphics.
i remember the first time i saw the ryu animation (from the SF2 intro? probably) in the beginning of this episode while at a friends house bk then... boy i was blown away! couldnt believe the details colours and movement of this image. I remember speculating with friends how graphics would be in the future...look at us now sometimes i check modern games and part of me goes like nah this cant be..but it is!
@@joed5150 No, that's a retro gaming myth. Here we have another person who grew up only playing/hearing crappy sounding American games on the Genesis, made with the terrible "gems" sound driver. The Genesis/Megadrive was capable of excellent sound and music, the combination of FM synth and Psg sound created audio rich with bass, clear horns and guitars, often richer then many Snes counterparts despite the Snes trying to sound more "realistic", not always to the greatest effect. The Snes was absolutely more versatile with its samples esp for sound efx, but when it comes to raw clarity in sound, it was often a toss up and very competitive. Japanese exclusive games usually represented what audio the Gen could really push out...Master of Monsters, Gauntlet IV, Devilish, Thunder Force 3&4, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Sonic, and Shining Force series, Vapor Trail, Midnight Resistance, Monster World IV etc. Plenty of fantastic sounding games the Snes doesn't have an equal answer to, the same way the Genesis doesn't have an equal answer to Super Metroid or Chronos Triggers music. So the "Snes music far superior" is a trolling myth that needs to die, they both had stellar, albeit different sounding great music from exclusive Japanese games that holds up well. Check out "Savaged Regimes" UA-cam channel where he uploads remixes of Snes and Gen songs using original hardware like for Mega Man X, or his latest game for the Genesis "Xenocrisis" which released in 2019. Truly special stuff that destroys the 30yr old myth.
@Dean Satan almost like the muted colors on Genesis that make virtually every game look like it went through the washing machine. Crappy sound effects that often don't even match what's going onscreen. As far as slowdown is concerned, I've played plenty of Genesis games that chugged along. Controller with its buttons in a row, yeah there's a reason it wasn't copied anywhere else going forward.
I actually really enjoyed SF II Special Champion Edition, at least when playing with a 6-button pad. Didn't sound as good as the SNES version but it was a very solid version of SF II on Genesis and that's all 10-year-old me really wanted at that time.
It's my favorite version of the 16-bit era ports. I wouldn't even say the SNES sounds better. Yes, the voices are better, but still have that awful SNES reverb effect. PC Engine has the best voices. But the SNES version is the only version that has some stage music that I'd rather not hear again. Ken's stage music on SNES sounds awful in my opinion.
I love playing SF on the Genesis, i play it on the Genesis mini, the graphics and sound isn't as good as the SNES but it's still fun! My fighters are Ryu and Ken, Ken has a better Dragon punch lol.
As a life long sega fan, I appreciate your channel. I gave up on sega when they gave up on their customers when they got out of the hardware business. Nonetheless, the memories still live on.
Another late night vid. It's perfect cuz I can't sleep 🤣 P.S. Strider was my favorite. Still can't believe my parents spent 70 dollars on that game when it came out. I still have it to this day.
Of all of these games (of which I own all but Mickey), Forgotten Worlds has to be my favorite. Sega programmed the hell out of that game, and it has that late '80s arcade magic on spades. That game is flat out awesome. Chiki Chiki Boys I bought in 1999 at a store literally because of its ridiculous name on the spine. The label on my cart is torn to hell, so I had no idea what to expect from cover art... just that it was called Chiki Chiki Boys and it was $10. I went for it, and beat it that night. It's a killer little game that should get credit where it's due. Honestly, quite a few of my Genesis purchases in the late '90s were based on having goofy titles. Trampoline Terror, Tyrants: Fight Through Time, Burning Force, Fire Shark, Shadow Blasters, and more... I have no regrets. If it's on Genesis and has a strange sounding title, it's probably a good time.
Great video didn't know about the Mickey mouse sequel from the super Nintendo I think the reason Capcom didn't bother much with the genesis is because of the sales in Japan at least in the beginning
I was thinking: "Dudeeee where's my STrider game, the first game I beat on the Genesis, hahaha". Awesome video as always. I'm such a fan for your channel. Thanks a lot man, much love for SEGA and CAPCOM games over the years. Be well, be safe!
Is funny that Capcom suported the Saturn and Dreamcast despite those consoles's sale numbers, but at least capcom belived on SEGA and made amazing ports and some temporally exclusives like Resident Evil Code Veronica.
SFII:SCE was actually the very first Street Fighter I ever played, and thus I have a lot of nostalgic attachment for it. It's also the reason I MUST have all 6 buttons up front for a Capcom fighter.
Great videos and channel you got here bruh, Capcom is a personal favorite of mine, but it seemed like they never really warmed up to the blast processor back in the day lol
Our household, thanks to a great choice by my dad who thought Sega "looked more colorful" and "was something different", was there for the SMS day one, the Genesis day one...but through some twist of fate we never played Capcom games!
just discovered your channel. I really appreciate your honest commentary... music, cartridge sizes, colors, game play, and over all graphic quality.. you hhit all the spots. You note precisely where games missed the marks. When you noted that the Mickey mouse game by Capcom was not even close to being on par with Castle of Illusion I was convinced you knew your stuff. Your analysis of The Punisher and Mercs was dead on too. "The music sucked" is such a powerful statement when you consider how important music is to the gaming experience. You have earned a new subscriber.
I loved The Great Circus Mystery on the Genesis. Hoping one day we'll get a Capcom Disney collection on the Switch with all those old 16 bit Magical Quest with Mickey Mouse platformers from the SNES/Genesis.
The color and sound hacks for Special Champion Edition make a big difference in quality; that is the definitive way to play the Genesis version now, IMO. I'd love to see someone do similar for Strider and Ghouls n Ghost on the Genesis. Without those cartridge memory limitations of the day (even though the originals are fine on their own) I think the SuperGrafx version could be surpassed. Maybe some 2-player Mercs? All kinds of things are possible now!
Capcom was legit on the Genesis at the time they were a staple in the arcade. I wonder what would have happened if they did games for the master system and how much of a difference it would have made against Nintendo.
It would have made a huge difference, if you compare games that came out for both the NES and SMS, the SMS version is typically equal or slightly better even if only visually. The SMS usually gets dinged because of its high pitched audio. The SMS only got Capcom games on it when the Genesis showed up and those hold up pretty well.
Capcom & Sega is good but Capcom & Snes is better. More games on snes from Capcom like Breath of Fire 1,2, Demon’s Crest, Final Fight 1,2,3, Goof Troop, King of Dragons, Knights of the round, Magic Sword, Megaman X 1,2,3, Street Alpha 2, Super Ghouls’n Ghost.
@Sega Lord X, did Capcom at least provide sprite sheets for the SEGA conversions? Strider and Forgotten Worlds are still two of my favorite games from early Genesis era. Looking at the PCE CD version, really makes me wonder what SEGA would have done with a larger cartridge or even a re-release on SEGA CD for Forgotten Worlds.
I’ve read multiple sources that say SEGA had to actually buy the arcade machines and reverse engineer the games from scratch. Capcom literally provided nothing.
@@SegaLordX That is AMAZING. It makes me respect the 90s Genesis/Mega Drive team even more so. Those were near perfect arcade translations (Strider, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds less so in some small areas but retains the experience). I remember in-store promotional videos where they would play the arcade and home versions of Golden Axe, Altered Beast, and Ghouls 'n Ghosts side by side to show off the arcade power of the system. I didn't realize some of the Capcom ports were just a year after the arcade debut. I guess it makes sense that with all the in-house arcade design firepower, they could buy those Capcom machines and strip them down to aid in the port. Love your channel bud. I blame you for all my recent SEGA CD and 32X purchases! Keep those vids coming!
@@SegaLordX I don't know if Capcom could have done much to help, apparently they were new to using the 68000 which was the heart of the CPS-1 arcade board all of those games ran on (Strider, Ghouls N Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds, Street Fighter 2/CE/Turbo...). Sega however had been using the 68000 since System 16 which they launched in 1985. They were much more familiar with the hardware, and the Genesis was very similar to the CPS-1 (albeit with a slower CPU, less colors, less sprites on screen etc...).
All these videos made me glad I had the Genesis as a tween. Very interesting facts about the early Capcom licensed games! Never understood those arrangements when the title screen would roll on some of those games. I remember seeing the screenshots of SFII Champion Edition before the Capcom rework (maybe in Sega Visions?), how small the characters were going to be, and a lackluster background art. I was pretty satisfied when I got copy of Special Champion edition!
Wow. Thanks, Sega Japan. You gave me some wonderful capcom memories on the megadrive. Oh. I just realised this is the first time I praised Sega Japan. :D
Chiki Chiki Boys is such a hidden gem. Rare game, beautiful box art... Great music and visuals. Awesome collectible game. Always felt like it should be in the $200 club for CIB.
Always amuses me when I hear anyone say "crap" I always think of it as such an English expression. Great vid as always have to say most of my Capcom library was on the snes while my Megadrive had the Sega exclusives.
@MultiTarded Also Capcom's current representation of LGBT people is pretty terrible overall, their games are hardly shining beacons of progressiveness, and saying their old games had no LGBT characters isn't even true, what with Final Fight's Poison being transgender and Darkstalkers's Morrigan being bisexual (two somewhat problematic characters that I still really like), those are hardly obscure characters either, what a bafflingly ignorant comment on so many levels. But I get it the presence of characters who don't fit into your unimaginative jacked up heterosexual douchebag power fantasies make you extremely uncomfortable, I've heard this story many times before. And gamers wonder why they're considered childish losers.
Stfu they are rocking it right now. Just because SF5 is not as good as many wanted to be doesnt mean the rest of the games they have been releasing in the last years arent good. RE7, Monster Hunter World, Devil May Cry 5, Megaman 11, RE2 Remake and so on. Next time use your brain before writing something on the Internet
Hey Sega Lord X, can you do a list of Sega Genesis games that uses the Six Button controller and maybe putted some description of what happens if you plug one of Six Button Genesis games with the Three Button Controller similar to like Street Fighter II on Sega Genesis has the Start Button changes the layout of Punch to Kick vice versa instead of Pausing the game while playing the Three Button Controller for example? I didn't tried all the Six Button Games in the Genesis Mini (I'm pretty sure it was Street Fighter II and Virtual Fighter 2 Genesis that I played it recently) and I did have The Lion King in Disney's Aladdin & The Lion King Collection, but the Three Button USB Controller does not work on the Nintendo Switch. I didn't see a single video listed in the Search for every Six Button Genesis Games available on UA-cam.
Forgotten worlds, uno de mis juegos favoritos, lo termine varias veces pero me costaba, tenia que tener una concentracion total.. yo tenia como 10 años en el 96..
Really enjoyed this video, Capcom didn't seem to push or show as much interest in the Mega Drive/Genesis as Konami or Electronic Arts did, but i'm pretty sure they intended Super Street Fighter II to sound the way it does on the Mega Drive/Genesis on the fact that their arcade counterpart used their CPS2 sound format like the SNES and instead of creating another duplicate FM sounding ost of Special Champion Edition, they made it sound as if the game came out in 1988. I like it and think the use of FM drums actually does it justice. Your content is amazing! I've watched this one, Sunsoft and Konami on the Mega Drive/Genesis. You should maybe think about doing videos on other 3rd party companies that were part of the Mega Drive/Genesis story like that company that went broke in 1994 - ''Toaplan and the Sega Genesis'' or ''Taito and The Sega Genesis'' and how almost none of their games made it PAL regions. Probe and Electronic Arts aswell. Plenty of ideas to think of, anywho I respect what you put out, really well done congrats!
While love them both, I actually play the Genesis version of Mercs more often the arcade version. Sega's added original mode, with its alternating upgradable characters & hidden items, provides a touch of depth that just makes it more enjoyable for me to run through than the standard arcade. But, as you said, you still need the arcade game for that sweet multiplayer action.
Maybe it's me, but original mode in mercs reminds me of when capcom would flesh out the mecanics of their arcade games for the nes ports (the original commando, to which mercs is a sequel, being an example of this practice)
You often mention superior versions of titles/fan hacks etc, but rarely showcase the mentioned versions/fixes. If you included quick clips It'd help us better understand your recommendations. Should've watched to the end! Thanks for featuring that excellent Megaman conversion, I had no idea it even existed! Though I'd still have liked a bit more comparisons between the sound hacks, because I think they're really impressive.
As a kid, I was able to kinda convince myself that Journey from Darkness: Strider Returns was actually a decent game after I asked my grandma to get it for me, more due to it being a gift from her than for the game itself and I still have that sucker CiB...thanks again Nana, I really miss you.
Basically the best Capcom games were done by Sega themselves and most of Capcom's support was really just an afterthought to get a few bucks after the Super Nintendo/Famicom support.
Capcom loves their crossover fighting games, I'm still hoping for a Sega vs. Capcom someday. I mean Archie did that Sonic/Mega Man crossover comic a few years back so it's not impossible right?
I'm a Sega fan and I have Mega Drive at home. When I saw the title, I thought "Capcom made more games for SNES than MD". It's true. Before Sega created Streets of Rage series, Capcom made Final Fight for SNES. The same also applied for Marvel and Disney games for SNES. Luckily I'm not Street Fighter fan so I'm not disappointed with Capcom. Thanks for bringing this topic.
Final Fight was around a bit longer than Streets of Rage. It was ported to the SNES pretty early, and could've been better than it turned out by waiting for it's release a little longer, so Capcom would have more experience with the console first, and if Capcom had gone with a bigger cart (same issue Sunset Riders suffered on Genesis with the latter).
Chiki Chiki Boys looks like it's really damn good. I'll have to give it a go at some point, it definitely stuck out to me as the most unique of the games here.
the PC engine port of STFII was also really smooth, it played really well and the super controller for it was really well made if a little simple looking.

Great job!! That last statement, 100% true! BTW SSFII on the Genesis still remains one of my favorites.
btw I wish there was a UN Squadron port to the Genesis, Ive always felt it would have handled the slowdown well and handle 2 players.
👍
Better instruments in the music too, that game would have been awesome on Gen, alongside other Capcom arcade games.
@@retrosoul8770 What? The Snes was FAR superior when it came to sound and music
Holy crap I can’t believe how good Mega Man X looked running on Genesis hardware!!!!!!
All the games shown in this video are nothing short of very well made and are classics for sure. Great video!
How about making an "Atlus and the Saturn" episode?
Already made it.
@@SegaLordX 😮😮😮😮😮
Great vid SLX. Always happy to hear my Genesis Batman at the end : D
I actually really enjoyed SF II Special Champion Edition, at least when playing with a 6-button pad. Didn't sound as good as the SNES version but it was a very solid version of SF II on Genesis and that's all 10-year-old me really wanted at that time.
It's a very good version hardly that different to the Snes.
It definitely ran faster.
Musics are better on Genesis and voices are actually equally bad, they are *extremely* muffled on SNES and scratchy on Genesis.
Awesome vid. I always wondered what the deal was between SEGA and Capcom.
This video taught me a lot about Sega's relationship with Capcom, and all of it was interesting. Thanks, Sega Lord X! :)
As a life long sega fan, I appreciate your channel. I gave up on sega when they gave up on their customers when they got out of the hardware business. Nonetheless, the memories still live on.
Great video, as always ^^
Thanks Sega Lord X !
That Mega Man X homebrew is incredible
Another late night vid. It's perfect cuz I can't sleep 🤣
P.S. Strider was my favorite. Still can't believe my parents spent 70 dollars on that game when it came out. I still have it to this day.
Had all these and loved them so... i was sad we didn't get 3 wonders - but it made a perfect port to saturn anyway...
So much Sega Lord X content lately. Love it
Of all of these games (of which I own all but Mickey), Forgotten Worlds has to be my favorite.
Great video as always Sega Lord X
It certainly helps that those systems were better at matching their arcade hardware than the PS1
@@otaking3582 i belive that the Saturn outsould the PS1 in Japan.
SFII:SCE was actually the very first Street Fighter I ever played, and thus I have a lot of nostalgic attachment for it. It's also the reason I MUST have all 6 buttons up front for a Capcom fighter.
Strider really was awesome when it first came out, I played the crap out it along with Ghouls N Ghosts. Great video!!
I never knew that Capcom Japan had outsourced the development of all those amazing Capcom games on Genesis! This channel is a treasure
Really? The history and coverage of the development for SF and Capcom games has been covered quite a bit ny many UA-cam channels, DF retro for one.
Thank you for showing and kicking Claw's ass in its entirety. At 3:00
:)). Yes!!!
Glad to see your channel grow over the years bro. Awesome and entertaining stuff!
If you have Street Fighter for your Genesis/Mega Drive, then I recommend getting the Genesis/Mega Drive 6-button arcade stick.
Snes has ssf2 reload hack, adds more speed options , really cool to
Toaplan is on Japanese arcade developer that definitely supported the Mega Drive
Not much since the Master System was trash compared to the NES
*Me:* * hears the Genesis SSFII version of Guile's Theme * "They massacred my boy"
Another great review.Keep up the great work and keep them coming.
Wow, so all my favorite Capcom games for Sega Genesis were actually Sega games licensed from Capcom.
Capcom and Sega Genesis it's the Perfect Combination.
MouritoGaia After actually watching the video its more like Capcom and Super Nintendo are the perfect combination.
Not even close.
@Darell Hunter 100%
0:44 They're one console. The Mega Drive is the original name for it. :)
Wow. Thanks, Sega Japan. You gave me some wonderful capcom memories on the megadrive. Oh. I just realised this is the first time I praised Sega Japan. :D
oh my god...1080p60 is gorgeous. Keep up the good work.
Capcom made so great games!
Great topic Sega Lord luv it when you make these Capcom and snk videos keep"em coming.... 💯💯👍
Good old days when Capcom was releasing finished games.
@MultiTarded Just had to throw in the random jab at LGBT people huh?
Capcom are at the top of their game right now
@MultiTarded Also Capcom's current representation of LGBT people is pretty terrible overall, their games are hardly shining beacons of progressiveness, and saying their old games had no LGBT characters isn't even true, what with Final Fight's Poison being transgender and Darkstalkers's Morrigan being bisexual (two somewhat problematic characters that I still really like), those are hardly obscure characters either, what a bafflingly ignorant comment on so many levels.
Brie Russell you fucking killed him dude
Great video. Never seen that Punisher game before.
Sega Genesis and Capcom for the win!
Another great show .Keep up the great work
Hey Sega Lord X, can you do a list of Sega Genesis games that uses the Six Button controller and maybe putted some description of what happens if you plug one of Six Button Genesis games with the Three Button Controller similar to like Street Fighter II on Sega Genesis has the Start Button changes the layout of Punch to Kick vice versa instead of Pausing the game while playing the Three Button Controller for example? I didn't tried all the Six Button Games in the Genesis Mini (I'm pretty sure it was Street Fighter II and Virtual Fighter 2 Genesis that I played it recently) and I did have The Lion King in Disney's Aladdin & The Lion King Collection, but the Three Button USB Controller does not work on the Nintendo Switch. I didn't see a single video listed in the Search for every Six Button Genesis Games available on UA-cam.
I didn't realise Slammasters had such an amazing soundtrack.
God damn..... These street fighter sound mods was all I ever wanted back then...
Forgotten worlds, uno de mis juegos favoritos, lo termine varias veces pero me costaba, tenia que tener una concentracion total.. yo tenia como 10 años en el 96..
Favorite game on Genesis was Super Street Fighter II The New Challengers
I had no idea that Capcom licensed SEGA for porting games!!
I love Saturday Night Slammaster and the rest of the titles i that series. I would love to see the re-released in some form.
Maybe it's me, but original mode in mercs reminds me of when capcom would flesh out the mecanics of their arcade games for the nes ports (the original commando, to which mercs is a sequel, being an example of this practice)
I bought a cheap powkiddy handheld, what's this Sega Atomicwaves games? Seems high quality gaming
awesome vid., something tells me you got a lot of capcom-sega ground to cover on more vids., as I love this company for stickin' 'til the bitter end
I can’t believe that mm x port on the end of your video. Wow!
Konami was King on the Genesis.
Except for sunset riders
Konami did a bad job on the genesis port the snes port was way better

Love your intro bro 👍🏾
Sega Lord X got that dp on lockdown !!
Wait what ? this is Rockman on an actual Genesis / Megadrive ? :0 BOY...
That Guide stage music in Super sounds ridiculous. Glad I had that on SNES.
The floor perspective always impresses me in sf2
Street Fighter II on Sega is the best way to play. It matters where six buttons are placed
My 2 favorite gaming girlfriends. Capcom and Sega. I also grew up in the 80s and 90s and i still support Sega and Capcom til this day.
@@Bloodreign1 Yes, FF was released first in 1989 in arcade. Then in 1990 in SNES. Thanks for the info
Chiki Chiki Boys looks like it's really damn good. I'll have to give it a go at some point, it definitely stuck out to me as the most unique of the games here.
Hahaha brilliant description.
" Hang from capcoms sack "
Awesome way to say what ya meant
the PC engine port of STFII was also really smooth, it played really well and the super controller for it was really well made if a little simple looking.
Chiki Chiki boys is my favorite game on the system. Nice.
I always think it's possible to make Street fighter IV happen on PS2 since there were lower quality version on mobile devices.
Who knows, SF IV uses a similar art style to SF X Tekken. That game came out on the Vita.
