Lord, in Super Monaco GP 2, Senna personally suggested made many corrections compared to the original game:1- touching the edges (red and white) won’t slow you down. 2- being really close to the car in front you gives you more speed due less air friction (vacuum effect). 3- many courses now requires to use brakes, and before you didn’t need. 4- hitting cars won’t give you advantages anymore etc
Double Dragon was the first arcade game I ever played, so I LOVE the franchise. I couldn't get the first game on the Genesis, but I bought 2 and 3, and I actually really enjoyed both games back then. MKII was improved for the 32X - loads of samples, use of PWM, more colour everywhere - but not having hardware ADPCM support on either machine has to be the main reason why speech was left out. Still, some people actually consider the 32X version the best port. I totally agree about the sound effects in Golden Axe II - the original was far better in this regard, though at least the sound engine doesn't pause for samples anymore. It does make you think what could be achieved if the original was ported again with a larger cart size, tweaked colours (see the Pyron hack) and better sound engine - I'm not suggesting that it would be arcade-perfect, of course not, but it'd still be a decent update over what was a decent port in the first place. That cart size would do wonders for faking the sprite scaling of the original arcade version. I have a soft spot for Super Monaco GP and played it a LOT in my teenage years, though I never actually owned it. I loved it so much that I actually bought the Genesis version, along with a region cart, a few years ago. To be fair to the sequel, the car effects remind me a little of 80s F1, so I personally wouldn't consider that a negative - the other cars did still sound like bees, though.
All mortal kombat 2 32X needed was a soundtrack created closer to the arcade and the correct placement of them. Would have been perfect but so much better
I played XMen 2 Clone wars by chance, it was on the shelf in Blockbusters and I picked it up with my cousin and loved it. Its one of the Sega Mega Drive games I still own till this day and have never completed.
re. Mortal Kombat II audio. The SNES included hardware audio compression. Genesis did not, which is why the same 24 Mbit cart on the SNES had more of the arcade sound effects and speech. Unfortunately, without compression, we could not fit all the high quality arcade sounds into the Sega version of MKII.
I appreciate the response Matt. Was there no way to use lower quality samples to offset the size of them? Tell you the truth I would have rather lost a stage to include the missing voices if size was the issue. Those iconic voices were such an important part of the MK experience.
@@SegaLordX Absolutely. I loved all the arcade voices. The 32X version is the definitive Sega version of MKII. Btw. Great channel, I watch it them all. Keep making the videos!
In fact a major part of the appealing of the sculpture software's PHENOMENAL version of Mortal Kombat 3 is the fact of retaining a big part of the arcade voice samples. Shame that the story will repeat again with the excessive and unnecessary version of Ultimate mk3, that game should have never seen the light on snes and md. By the way Matt, a toast for all the amazing sounds you have created on our beloved sega machines. We really appreciate your work.
@@MattFurniss You remind me of Yuzo Koshiro and David Wise in terms of providing your own unique takes to game music and soundtracks. Your take on Mortal Kombat 1 and Mortal Kombat 2 songs for the Genesis versions were so solid and underrated, you probably could've had your own take to Mortal Kombat 3 music (specifically the Genesis version).
They should have used that Lotus II engine on a port of OutRunners , and Turbo Outrun for the Genesis They would not have been arcade perfect by any means, but they would have been very decent ports.
I was born a sega fan over Nintendo , am 30 now and I still love sega ! Favourite franchise is SOR (bare Knuckle ) great video sega lord X !!! Love this content
I remember playing Mk2 snes version at my friends house and being mad that it looked much better than my genesis version, until that point sega genesis was the king to me and could do no wrong.
Even Lemmings got a sequel on the Mega Drive/Genesis ''Lemmings 2 The Tribes''. I dunno does Columns III qualify for a sequel? Seeing as the second game was ignored completely by Sega on the Mega Drive/Genesis. Thank you SegalordX for another wonderful video production.
About Super Monaco GP II: Ayrton Senna didn't just give his name to the game. He was heavily involved in the development of the game, providing the designers and programmers several tips of how to make the game feel realistic in terms of speed and controls. They really appreciated the tips and learned quite a lot. Learned enough to develop Virtua Racing...
Honestly, I think the point you made about Sega not bringing many of its properties forward to other hardware generations is what made me appreciate Sega more than Nintendo. Sure, it's a bummer that some of them didn't come forward, but there were certain properties that were best left in the past, in my opinion. Sega's creativity was at an all-time high with Dreamcast, and look at all of the cool new properties we got to see that may have never seen the light of day had Sega's developers been forced to retread the same properties again and again.
matt you sure your talking about 2 or did you mean 3. 3 had multiple ending based on time limits per level. Don’t ever remember 3 having this. Don’t even remember 2 having multiple paths through a level.
Well said SLX. Nintendo did their utmost to evolve their IPs year by year....Sega? Well, you know the drill. Make a trilogy of games then fuggin' forget about them on the next console. Great video and I have to say, I LOVE Golden Axe 2.
My favorite of these is easily X-Men 2 Clone Wars. One touch I liked beyond what you spoke about is related to the music. Every stage's song has its own base track that plays. Depending on which mutant you select, some stages also overlay a secondary track specific to that character. I think the boss-only levels were the exceptions.
Nice vid. I've thought it'll be about surge of modern sequels, like SoR4, Monster boy, Wonder boy returns... Hey, I think it'll be good idea for a new review.
@@SomeOrangeCat Yeah it was a made up term but it was based on a real advantage the Genesis had, which is that it had a faster CPU than the SNES and that's why slowdown was much less of an issue, but that had less to do with how advanced the Genesis was and more to do with the SNES's limitations, even the TurboGrafx-16 had a faster CPU than the SNES.
@@SegaLordX well you are Wrong! It caused many broken friendships and schoolyard debates at the time....and it was that aggressive marketing that led Nintendo to lose dominance in NA market.
X-Men 2 was and still is one of my favorites of all time. Nothing beats the first time we turned it on as kids, there's already a missile flying at us (a character we didn't choose) before we even knew what the hell is going on! Also I have to throw in Jungle Strike as an upgrade over the original.
There was a period around 90/91 where every Sega sequel was like the original on steroids. Rolling Thunder games on Genesis are so overlooked. Perfect gameplay. Visuals hold up better than vast majority. Golden Axe II was first Genesis game I bought other than my pack-in Sonic 1. Loved it but surprised I beat it so quickly, growing up on NES conversions that were long epic quests rather than actual arcade games I had no idea what owning an actual true arcade game would be like. The upside is that it was arcade experience at home, the down side was a game like that is only a few hours long.
If Golden Axe 2 was easy, you could try activating the magic glitch. This can only be done at the end of the bridge level, the level before the volcano where you have to fight a bunch of lizardmen as the boss. You have to "charge" your magic up as much as possible, preferably to the max, and have it "charged" by the end of the fight. (easier said than done though) It only works on this level because in other levels, your character will automatically release the magic when the boss dies, but not on this level for some reason. I haven't tried this for all levels, but for the few that I have, the magic is immediately released when the fight is done except for this particular level. Next up will be the camping interlude where those mages will come and steal some of your magic books. This will result in you having less magic than what you finished the level with. This is exactly what you want. The goal here is to end the sequence with LESS magic than you "charged" up after the previous boss fight, so just don't pick up any more magic books and you'll be set. In the next level (volcano) your character will immediately release magic at the level which you "charged" it to at the end of the previous level (e.g if you charged to max, the highest level of magic would be released) the moment the level starts. However since your current stash of magic is LESS than what is required for the magic that is cast, it results in an overflow where the amount of magic you have breaks through the maximum possible level for your chosen character and practically fills the bottom of your screen. You can now spam magic as much as you like without ever running out of it. A bit of caution here, you CAN now "charge" your magic beyond the previous limit of your character's highest level of magic (e.g, the dwarf's magic only goes up to level 3, but you can "charge" your magic beyond that), however releasing the "charged" magic will result in the game freezing and necessitate a reset.
Senna played tons of SEGA games. Super Monaco GP was made with a lot of his input. There are a lot of pics of him playing thr arcade version and other SEGA games. Rest in Peace Senna 😭, you should be still with us. Our national symbol the likes of Neymar, Ronaldo and the Smoking Snakes.
I still think Golden Axe The revenge of Death Adder was the best in the series. The magic and branching paths was so much fun to keep playing over and over.
Great video. Your usual exemplary quality @SLX . Can I ask what you made of the original double dragon on genesis. I personally like it but opinions vary wildly online
I never gelled well with the hyper fast gameplay. It made it difficult for me to enjoy because I like to mix up my attacks constantly. I always felt I needed to spam the same things over and over to get anywhere.
hey man your gameplay footage of battle mania daiginjou gave me an ear worm. Can you tell me what level you were on at 6:12 ? I wanna look up the song. Fantastic video btw.
Senna would after his videogame's release in 1992 sadly die 2 years later on May 1st 1994 after crashing into a concrete barrier while leading in that year's San Marino Grand Prix. RIP Brazil's Ayrton Senna. Senna's death wasn't the only one for that Grand Prix as during qualifying the day before (April 30th) an Austrian, Roland Ratzenberger had hit a concrete barrier wall almost head-on and was critically injured. The qualifying session was stopped while doctors attended to Ratzenberger. After initially being taken by ambulance to the on-circuit medical centre, he was airlifted to Maggiore Hospital shortly after. Later in hospital, it was announced that Ratzenberger had died as a result of his multiple injuries. RIP Roland Ratzenberger
5:08 A cameo by the Whip Rush fighter! Lotus reminds me of Top Gear. Rolling Thunder 3 didn't have 2 player co-op like Rolling Thunder 2 for some reason. And let's face it, Golden Axe 2 was a pretty good sequel, but the game that stands out the most for me in that series is Golden Axe 3. The level and depth of gameplay reached a level never before seen in the series and the soundtrack was easily the best of the series. In fact the soundtrack stands out as among some of Sega's best.
The Lotus and Top Gear series both were developed by Gremlin Interactive. Also, there was only one playable character in _Rolling Thunder 3,_ so a two player co-op wouldn't make sense (why there wasn't a two player alternating mode, who knows?) The fact that they were able to fit the second GA into half a megabyte (blame the marketers for insisting on selling games on *megabit* size) is quite the achievement. The third entry was all right, but this was about the time Sega was running out of ideas for the series (that one fighting game, and then the PS2 rendition, and that was the end.)
Best Genesis sequels for me are shinning Force 2, Phantasy Star 4, Streets of Rage 2 (3s ok but damn its hard for me), some of the Joe Montana and EA NHL games (especially when the introduced voiced play by play), the glorious Thunderforce 3 and 4,
U done did it brother that's it I'm firing up my Genesis and I'ma play some Greatest Heavyweights and X-Men 2 clone wars and I'm using the 99lives cheat code too cuz that's the only way I can beat it still till this day😁
All of the Lotus games are awesome. They are, also, excellent conversions from the computer originals. Lotus III (AKA Lotus II on Genesis) might even be superior to the Top Gear games. It is great that you included them.
X-Men 2 was also one of those games that didn't start with the Sega logo and title screen. The game started with an intro level in Siberia... the second that players turned on their Genesis.

Some of my favorite sequels are PHANTASY STAR IV, SPLATTER HOUSE 3, ULTIMATE MORTAL KOMBAT 3 and SHINING FORCE II. But honestly...the list really could go on and on! LOL!
I am so glad that you put Battlemania in this list. I have never played this game ever or Trouble Shooter and I am playing it for the first time ever! I am so blown away with how much detail there is in this game. Please review more games that never came to USA for any sega platform!!
Looking at Double Dragon sprites makes me feel like im 12 again lol
Thanks for the great video! You introduced me to some great games I'll have to go check out now. Never knew about Trouble Shooter and it's sequel. They look awesome! Gonna have to track them down and give them a play!
Phantasy Star II ♥ ♥
L E G E N D A R Y ! !
I love Rolling Thunder...man the memories in the arcade. This and Elevator Action Again are my favorites
Many good sequel's here. One really bad one was Rastan II. Man that was a disappointment. Fun vid 👍🎮
Great video SLX, keep em coming!
HUGE mad props!👌 For mentioning "Troubleshooter" one of my all-time favorite Genesis Games, especially in the soundtrack!🎹🎧😵😎 I never owned it, but I rented it and loved every minute of it.👍👍 I just recently found out about a sequel? Thank you for giving a spotlight on that too!👍
Sega Lord another incredible video. I just did a video on one of your favorite most loved games, Battle Arena Toshinden URA (lol)
Im glad it wasnt just me who thought that Sega's Mortal Kombat 2 played better than the SNES.
Great stuff as always!
Awesome review! As a racing game fan I will definitely check out Lotus 1 and 2! All these titles are some great choices! Awesome job SLX!
I’ll never get the sound of the laughing skull from Splatterhouse 2 out of my head.
This was fun to watch! Great idea!
U always pick some of the coolest footage
They should have used that Lotus II engine on a port of OutRunners , and Turbo Outrun for the Genesis
They would not have been arcade perfect by any means, but they would have been very decent ports.
Great video as always I love the Splatterhouse series.
Sonic 2 was my 1st game back in xmas 1993
I never get tired of that end credit music. Its that good.
I waited the whole video for Shining Force 2. Maybe next time. 🤞😁
The spray vagasil commercial 3 mins into the video really sets the mood. Thanks UA-cam
Great choice on using Fiend’s Path as a track at the end. I’m not the biggest fan of Golden Axe but that is a killer tune.
Super Monaco GP was one of my favorite titles on the system. The full season mode was really good as well.
7:58 splatterHouse 2 had multiple endings?
matt you sure your talking about 2 or did you mean 3. 3 had multiple ending based on time limits per level.
Part of me is Nelson going "HA HA!" because goddamn, did Sega love to talk shit back in the day. Now they're kissing Nintendo's ring.
Loved the Lotus series, I played them on the Amiga though, if you've not played Lotus 3 it's well worth a go.
Lotus 3 on the Amiga *is* Lotus 2 on the Genesis.
@@PJBonoVox
Ha well there you go, so was Lotus really Lotus 2?
@@wing0zero Yeah, Lotus on the Genesis is Lotus 2 on the Amiga.
You should call part 3 something with "electric boogaloo"
Keep it up man 👍🏼
Don't you know that boogaloo is now a racist word !?
@@Gatorade69 I actually didn't
@@AxelStone Yep. And now the OK hand gesture and even bowl cuts.
@@Gatorade69 _sigh_
@@Gatorade69 Everyone is a victim nowadays. Wonder what they would think of Blazing Saddles??
I grew up with many of the game in this video. These are no doubt classics.
Nice vid. I've thought it'll be about surge of modern sequels, like SoR4, Monster boy, Wonder boy returns... Hey, I think it'll be good idea for a new review.
Love Battle Mania Daiginjou. Its one of the few games I often enjoy playing (and sometimes beating) on the hardest difficulty.
When are going to do a video on BLAST processing how can you be a Sega channel then?
Blast processing was a commercial for Sonic 2 to most people. It has zero real world application. What's to talk about?
Blast Processing is a marketing buzz phrase.
@@SomeOrangeCat ...
Interesting film. I'm a big Golden Axe II fan too. Like your point about it.
(easier said than done though)
It only works on this level because in other levels, your character will automatically release the magic when the boss dies, but not on this level for some reason.
I love the golden axe sequels for genesis/md
Great video. You forgot Space Harrier 2 tho. Anywho, keep it up!
Brilliant analysis at the end. Well said on the longevity or failure of video game companies.
Man lotus games are really great....looking foward for a part II
Senna played tons of SEGA games. Super Monaco GP was made with a lot of his input. There are a lot of pics of him playing thr arcade version and other SEGA games.
Rest in Peace Senna 😭, you should be still with us. Our national symbol the likes of Neymar, Ronaldo and the Smoking Snakes.
Having never owned a Genesis, it’s cool to watch this stuff. At least I have a Dreamcast that works.
I still think Golden Axe The revenge of Death Adder was the best in the series. The magic and branching paths was so much fun to keep playing over and over.
Of that series it's the best by a mile.
Thank you for your video keep up the good work
I remember playing Rolling Thunder 2 and it was cool at the time. I didn’t get to play the 3rd one
The 3rd one was good and all, but had no co-op play for some reason.
what the hell that boss in double dragon 2 for genesis looks like the guy you play for Crude Buster or whatever that games called
Battle Mania 2 is one of my favourite shooters of all time.
When I watch Sega Lord X I eat ramen soup
Great video. Your usual exemplary quality @SLX . Can I ask what you made of the original double dragon on genesis. I personally like it but opinions vary wildly online
I never gelled well with the hyper fast gameplay. It made it difficult for me to enjoy because I like to mix up my attacks constantly. I always felt I needed to spam the same things over and over to get anywhere.
hey man your gameplay footage of battle mania daiginjou gave me an ear worm. Can you tell me what level you were on at 6:12 ? I wanna look up the song. Fantastic video btw.
X-Men 2 is my favourite!
2:52 what in the blood hell was that collision detection?
First time I've seen 3 ads in a single video
I love these videos
Also, there was only one playable character in _Rolling Thunder 3,_ so a two player co-op wouldn't make sense (why there wasn't a two player alternating mode, who knows?)
The fact that they were able to fit the second GA into half a megabyte (blame the marketers for insisting on selling games on *megabit* size) is quite the achievement. The third entry was all right, but this was about the time Sega was running out of ideas for the series (that one fighting game, and then the PS2 rendition, and that was the end.)
Whats the beginning music that plays? I’ve heard this before....
Best Genesis sequels for me are shinning Force 2, Phantasy Star 4, Streets of Rage 2 (3s ok but damn its hard for me), some of the Joe Montana and EA NHL games (especially when the introduced voiced play by play), the glorious Thunderforce 3 and 4,
No mention of the secret bonus game in Lotus II? Look it up.
I loved Mortal Kombat 2 on sega Genesis as a kid. I like the music in it more than the snes version, although the snes version is better looking.
Why is there no mention of Shining Force II, or Phantasy Star III or IV?
Cause I didn't want to talk about those games in this particular episode. They get enough coverage so I put focus elsewhere. Maybe in part 5.
