Depends on the type of injury. A grade 3 injury needs about 4-6 weeks to settle whereas a grade 1 injury is mild and the exercises can start after a few days. If you have bruising and swelling assume a grade 3 injury until proven otherwise.

Yeah you should see a podiatrist. If you're still experiencing pain and swelling after a few months, there's something not right there.
