  • A discussion about unshaming the signs of the zodiac, which involves re-conceptualizing qualities that are viewed as negative, and radically accepting what we invalidate in each sign. With astrologers Britten LaRue and Chris Brennan.
We open the episode by discussing the topic of shame in astrology, and some of the problems involved with treating certain qualities in the signs as problematic, and the effect that can have on people.
Then we proceed to go through each of the 12 signs of the zodiac and discuss at least two ways in which certain signs can be unshamed, starting with Aries and then going all the way through to Pisces.
Britten is the author of the new book Living Astrology: How to Weave the Wisdom of all 12 Signs into Your Everyday Life, which just came out on March 5:

This was one of your best episodes, Chris. When Britten said "astrology transmutes the shame of existing, because it asks us to stretch ourselves as big as the sky" I got goosebumps. I love your content and spend time with almost all of your recordings, at the same time when you bring in guests who grasp the psychological sides deeper, I am in my happiest of places. Thank you so much for doing this episode and for showing up, doing the work each week. 💜 ♑ ☀

Unshaming: Giving yourself permission. Some important quotes with timestamps.
Aries - The audacity to build on a dream before you fully know what you're doing. (32:32)
Discovering what turns you on and giving that to yourself. (45:24)
Taurus - Letting your pace be a sacred guide to you. (49:42)
If it's not resonant, it's not fucking resonant. (54:52)
The audacity to have preferences and that your preferences are an important part of who you are. (58:08)
Gemini - Your desire for novelty is not evidence of disloyalty, it is a commitment to the engine of reality. (1:17:52)
Cancer - The audacity to name and know the limits that you have for caring and giving care. (1:33:27)
Leo - The fact that some might burn in the sun is not your fault. The fact that the sun has malefic qualities, it is difficult to be a solar being when we are terrified of taking up space and being seen. (1:54:57)
Virgo - The audacity to be picky as fuck. I have found it to be true that when I pretend I am not fussy I end up causing harm. Somewhere along the way maybe you got shamed for being difficult. (2:11:05)
Libra - Maybe you're indecisive or maybe their urgency is not your problem. Maybe you're indecisive or maybe your pace is sacred... Is it indecision or are you shaming the option you desire? Is it indecision or does your truth feel dangerous? (2:19:02)
If you shame those who insist on beauty then you shame beauty in yourself. (2:25:57)
    Disagreement is not invalidation. (2:31:57)
Scorpio - The audacity to be macabre... Only in a culture terrified of death would we make someone feel selfish for ruminating on the fact that things end. We cannot separate ourselves from the gruesome and the creepy because these too belong to life. (2:39:20)
The audacity to not mask the fact that death is a part of reality. (2:41:11)
The audacity to be really genuinely honest about something even if it is uncomfortable. (2:44:55)
Is my directness a problem or is it that you feel threatened by the clarity of my edges. (2:46:20)
Sagittarius - The audacity to be shameless... Only in a culture of shame would we be resentful of someone who isn't paralysed by the threat of consequences. Sag shamelessness has intelligence to break you free from the decay of decorum. Unshamed shalemessness because what feels good is also wisdom. (2:47:41)
The freedom to be who you are authentically. (2:50:16)
Unshame taking up space in your own story. Bring me your tall tales, the ones where you take up so much space. I find it to be true that when I resist amplifying myself overtly I will do it in the shadow realm. The urge to minimise one's story is a consequence of deep shame for existing. Astrology transmutes the shame of existing because it asks us to stretch ourselves as big as the sky. (3:00:55)
Go ahead and be tall. Speak with hyperbole. (3:03:02)
Unshaming letting your unbridled optimism and joy uplift other people. (3:08:38)
Capricorn - My ambition is my service... What if we expand the term ambition to mean the sincere and ardent commitment to showing up for what matters to you, for staying connected to your channel as long as necessary to complete the task of your heart. Shaming my lack of congruence because then I'm simply not being honest about who I am. (3:10:16)
Unshaming having the audacity to pursue one's goals and priorities even if they don't align with others'. (3:14:18)
If I shame myself for withholding respect, there's a shadow desire in myself to be respected by everyone. When you unshame the exclusivity of respect, you release yourself from performing for everyone's respect. (3:18:29)
Embracing having standards or even high standards and a highly developed sense of discernment. (3:19:23)
I found it to be true that my self-respect grows in proportion to the degree that I'm willing to be malefic. I respect myself when I experience the malefics moving through me because it means I'm taking the risk to show you who I am no matter how you respond to me. It means I trust that I cannot be abandoned because I will not abandon myself. (3:20:32)
To excel within the context of the constraints of the system... or the structure that is in place that you're operating within. (3:23:49)
Aquarius - Your deviation is your liberation.(3:30:27)
We shame deviations from someone's previous norm as inauthentic as if there's such a thing as a self that does not change. (3:31:04)
Embracing not conforming. Embracing also being an outsider. (3:32:52)
When our weirdness is more forward, we can trust that we're talking with someone who is moving from this unique frequency that they feel for themselves, so they're expressing that authenticity of that as opposed to the performance of belonging. (3:35:09)
What I found to be true is that connection is actually so much more meaningful then because when you feel safe to be yourself, and then you find other people who are resonating with that frequency of your Aquarius; the connection feels deeply liberating because you feel so seen in the wholeness, rather than the people only seeing the part of you that you're allowing to stay safe within the tribe. (3:37:57)
Maybe you're aloof or maybe you don't find it loving to pretend you feel like engaging when you don't. Are you detached or are you honouring someone's sovereignty by not attaching to them in the name of friendliness. Unshaming my Aquarius has meant giving myself permission to be seen as cold when I know myself to be warmly within my own frequency. What if it's prosocial, not antisocial, to say no to interactions that don't resonate with your current frequency. I value you as in I will not ask you to dilute yourself in order to match me. (3:40:30)
The audacity to notice when we are in a paradigm... that is actually not helpful to us being here together. (3:43:28)
Pisces - It's not zoning out, it's tuning in. If you shame someone for being in their own world then you will shame yourself for wanting a break from this one, leading to unconsciously escapist behaviours that might lead to more shame. Unshaming Pisces means giving one another another more spaciousness with timing expectations and checking resentments when someone doesn't find what's meaningful to you as meaningful to them. (3:44:22)
If we're all connected to our dreams, then we will let each other be in our dream spaces. (3:48:16)
Who is going to validate this delusional dream except for me? And so a lot of unshaming Pisces has a lot to do with validating and valuing our dreams. (3:54:44)
The audacity to live with an open heart... When we shame someone for being openhearted we will shame ourselves for being openhearted... There is no path where we get to curate which feelings we allow. (3:57:34)
When we drop the good-bad binary from the feeling experience, all feelings become music for guiding the way. (3:58:44)
These are some quotations from this episode that reframe and unshame each sign that I found important to note for future reference. It started with just a sentence or two as I was trying to pinpoint some of the most essential parts to reflect on for future reminders and the number of quotes got longer with each as I watched this video, but feel free to comment others you like or found important.
Thanks both Chris and Britten for this episode, I found it really helped in appreciating the ways that each sign contribute to our lives and how to embrace each with pride and courage.

As a heavy sag with an Aries moon, this was really healing. Moving out on my own at 18 with no plan, taking cheap flights with nothing but a backpack and a super narrow budget, diving into things I know nothing about with no expectations. It’s brought me some unnecessary baggage and circumstances, but it’s a part of me I can’t imagine living without. People with a lot of fire definitely require a lot of graciousness from others, but I feel like the richness of my experiences comes from surrendering to simply being and to trusting that I always have my own back.
The universe is mental and mindset IS your reality. No matter the circumstance, there is always a larger picture at play and it’s okay to just breathe and let things be as they are without trying to play into the illusion of control.

Sun, Moon, and Venus in Leo….and as a South Asian woman I’m so deeply conditioned to think selflessness is the ultimate value…the word selfish is the biggest shame trigger word for me and has been used to manipulate and control me…even kept me in relationships that were abusive and/or deeply unhappy. This was lovely and so helpful. Thank u!

This is quickly becoming my favorite episode on the Astrology Podcast.
Thank you Britten, for the powerful reflection work you have brought forward and applied here in Astrology.
The shame-blame construct is neither simple, nor a superficial exploration. And your understandings of the mechanics to its dissolving power coupled alongside the evolving archetypes and human characteristics options, is lovingly and humbly expressed with eloquent articulation.
Long-short, I sincerely appreciate the work you are bringing forward Britten. And Chris, as always, you are an epic stand for variants platforms and holding clear and honorable space for the many lenses that different people experience the world through - it’s that very stand as compassionate presence and accepting witness that IS the demonstration of how we May all create space for one another, and ultimately ourselves, in becoming our truest expressions.
    Blessings to you both!

As a Scorpio, I found this funny. I am a medium, and I had totally forgotten a time in my life when I would have been aware of the fact that many people find death to be a difficult or uncomfortable subject to talk about. Life and death are so inseparable to me now. Thank you for shining a light on that. It helps me to see my worth more clearly; as someone who can speak comfortably about death, bring balance and help put others at ease around the subject. I am also a Sag rising, so I may in fact bring a degree of enthusiasm to it. That might be shocking to some people and a great relief to others.

Wonderful timing for this episode. I've been reading through Unlearning Shame by Dr. Devon Price with my partner. It looks at how systemic shame permeates Western culture, and how shame is actually not a useful motivator for maintaining an ethical, healthy society. It also shares ways to practice letting go of shame, and the fulfillment and connection we can find when we do.

What I dislike about the idea that signs “correct” the previous one is that it sounds reductive, as if there was something to be “corrected”, or in other words there was something wrong with the previous sign to begin with. I’d much rather think of it as signs ‘complement’ the previous one, as a passing on the baton, which is needed in order to progress. Aries may start loads of exciting endeavours, but it takes Taurus to make it real and establish it, and Gemini to talk about it, and so forth…

Gemini rising here. I've learned to approach everything as short term. No longer invest a lot of money in a project or hobby until I've passed the dabbling phase. Especially important for gems who share finances with another person. Don't squander other people's resources on whims. Don't buy books, borrow from library. Don't buy a piano, buy a ukulele. Don't buy yarn for a whole sweater until you have finished a few hats...

As someone with 5 planets in Libra, I can say that I'm very decisive, it just takes careful deliberation to get there. Consideration is the bulk of it, as in what decision is going to benefit the most amount of people and do the least amount of harm? There are a lot of complexities to this but simply put this is the root.

I appreciate the clarity of thought and speech in articulating the experience of shame and relating it to the archetypes of our natal charts. From the first time I learned that my sun sign is Capricorn I was told that it was a bad sign and so felt shame and the inclination to hide that fact. Later, learning about the planets I have in Scorpio and Virgo, again I felt ashamed because of the reputation those signs have in my experience. I am so glad that you've taken on this very important issue because it is both insidious and pervasive. Thank you, especially to the author. Thank you!

Lol, I think Libra may have been shortchanged a bit, which is making me think about what’s at the heart of some of those Libra qualities. The first word that comes to mind is courtesy, and I think that courtesy (as opposed to good manners) is an acknowledgment of the dignity and equality of other people. Sometimes Libra’s really don’t like to disappoint or say no to others, and perhaps this isn’t only about people pleasing, but instead seeing the other person and their desires as being of equal importance with one’s own (I.e. the opposite of Aries). It occurs to me that this is exactly what lies at the heart of a civilized society and therefore a society that is more beautiful and more harmonious. Good manners are, after all, a kind of art form.
Another side of Libra is sometimes loving to argue/have endless discussions. One of my childhood friends (a Libra) must always take the opposite opinion. Although this can be annoying really, for the sake of justice and balance, she feels bound to defend the unrepresented point of view.

As an aquarius moon and rising I’d say my greatest shame is when I get bored because, based on how the structure of communication or ideas, I can tell that its boring, incomplete or incorrect, and openly stating that I don’t care that much. I know theres a better way to phrase this.
But the conformity thing hits hard because I know I am supposed to engage normally to hurt their feelings but then I detach and play along. Its like i have to detach from myself or others

Great episode and wonderful conversation and thank you 🙏🏻. Just to add further to the subject of shaming. For the most part people shame from a perspective of their own illusionary standards which in itself is very subjective , built around their belief system and self importance which in itself feeds their ego. As you said, understanding and compassion is at times shamed, when in reality understanding, compassion, empathy are strengths in which true power is . I believe people regardless of Zodiac placements can acquire this through studying themselves, being mindful of themselves and of others . Oh and yes I have Capricorn Moon as well so was feeling it when you were talking about yourself.

great episode. really confirms for me that there’s another primary layer of theory and value that make each person’s concept of astrology meaningful. astrology doesn’t come with an ethic or preference.

As a Capricorn stellium i literally had to pause this video to come write this comment. “I respect myself when I experience the malefics moving through me because it means I’m taking the risk to show you who I am no matter how you respond to me. It means I trust that I cannot be abandoned because I will not abandon myself.” I literally started crying. This entire video has been SO healing for me and I want to thank the both of you so much for this. I’m recommending this to everybody in my life whether they like astrology or not because there are SO many mic drops throughout the entire video.

Vagittarius!! As a Vag rising 😂 that was so important to hear! I think the bow being as valuable as the arrow hits it right on the head. I feel like so many Vagittariuses end up being in support roles…launching other people’s arrows in a way and either really doing that from a place of conviction and love or possibly because of femme caretaking conditioning or limitations on our freedom and mobility and how that plays out in the Sag archetype. So many sages love to be teachers! I’m commenting so much on this video! Of course, it’s 4 hours so I’m getting through it slowly, but it’s soooo good and I’m getting so much out of it! 💖🙏🏾

This brushed up against my libra complex a bit - sun-mars-merc are there, so i had to take this in chunks, but I'm so glad I did. The insight gained from this run around the zodiac was brilliant and I'm extremely grateful Britten was able to come on and share her inights. It made difficult parts of my chart to understand (my averse houses in particular, and signs whose presence in my life i haven't understood well (like my sag midheaven and Venus)
Thank you Britten for sharing your fire, thank you Chris for platforming this knowledge :)

I think Chris really got to an important part of unshaming Libra. Libra is shamed for being wishy washy, indecisive, people pleasing. But there is value in trying to preserve harmony and catching more flies with honey.

Than you so much, the pre-order is of this title will be released on March 19, 2024 on Amazon UK, so I just purchased it and thank you both for this lovely moments.
I'm touched to celebrate this book with you, also in the memory of Rakasha she based most of her therapy groups on the work with SHAME and how this affects every movement of the being in our society and she is a master of masters with degree in psychology and an international therapist whom never has stop doing thousands of Groups to learn with herself with Osho and around the world.
I grew up with her for many years, working for my mother, she did so much work of so many kinds but it was with the work of SHAME when she spoke about it that it thought me that I was correct as a child, yet, that was thanks to my parents whom based me to it. Yet, one needs to reaffirm this views and sharpen them as celebrating you, thank you deeply.

Wow that was a really good discussion on Cancer and emotions. It seems like there's so much shame around that in society and in the astrological community so it was good to see that broken down. Will be rewatching that a few more times before moving on to the remaining signs (as a Cancer Sun/Moon/Mercury)! Didn't really relate to the caregiving bit because that's never been a thing in my life, perhaps because my Sun and Moon are co-present so I'm more self-focused. But I've no doubt it will help others!

    • @jem2250
      @jem2250 3 місяці тому +2

Interesting. Another problem w astro is stereotyping in a one dimensional way. Like Cancer= caretaking. It is fertile, emotionally driven energy. It cares about one’s own immediate circle not society. It is self involved in this way, can be highly creative, love of comfort too. To me, the ultimate caregiver is Virgo. Selfless to a fault, and there is always a fault, w any sign.

    • @CharpyTheHedgehog
      @CharpyTheHedgehog 3 місяці тому +3

@@jem2250 Thanks, yes I agree with you. I think Leo and Cancer are similar in that they are the two signs ruled by the Luminaries (Sun and Moon) so living fully in the richness of our own subjective/personal experience is what matters to us. Leo and Cancer weave personal stories, memories and meaning into everything we do. However this is also why Leo is so prideful and Cancer takes things too personally- there isn't that Saturnian detachment.

That Leo one hit so hard... how we all perpetuate cycles of shame around taking up space and shining brightly out of fear of triggering others and subsequently them shaming us as a projection of their own fear of shining, therefore we shrink as a reaction, and the cycle continues... we all need to heal the Leo in our charts so we can shine and let each other shine and uplift and celebrate ourselves and each other

Jah & Jahes love Chris and Britten. Thank you for a very interesting podcast about unshaming the signs in astrology. I always felt ashamed of some of the stereotypes that are associated with Gemini and I'm so happy that Britten has done this work and published this wonderful book. I learned so much from the discussion about each of the signs. And, I totally appreciate what was said about Gemini and I really needed to hear it because it described my personality very well. But, my desire to try so many things simultaneously or briefly is part of my long years of being a student. We are often assigned chapters from books or manuscripts that are most relevant to the subject that we're studying in the class that particular semester. So, I was trained to read like that, even though, I love to read entire books. And, I jumped to different programs not because my interest waned but due to my need to learn those ideas and skills so that I could deepen my understanding of the original subject. I have the Sun, Ascendant, Moon, and Mercury in Gemini. I also have a stellium in Virgo, a Mercury-ruled sign, with Uranus, Jupiter, Pluto conjunct, and South Node there in the 5th house. I have most of my planets in Earth Signs of Taurus and Virgo and that keeps me stable. I don't like too much drastic change but I love to get to know my immediate or local area very well. I most identify with the local transportation but I appreciate the express trains and buses especially when I'm running late. ( I put Britten Larue's book on my Amazon Wish list and I also found your book on Hellenistic Astrology but your most recent book which was published in 2021 is not on your Amazon page.) Thanks for everything. Blessed love.#1804#Ayiti#ToutMounseMoun#AbolishCPS#AbolishPoverty#DefundFosterCare#HRES40NOW#220YearsFREE#HandsOffAyiti#FREEAyiti
