Another good vid. I've got heaps of Glowbite jigs, but been too busy soft baiting on the kayak to try something new. Will have to give it a go and put up a vid.
Just a quick question, at 2:31 you said to use 90-100 g for 30 meters of depth. Why this choice? Is it because you have high drift ? In the United Arab Emirates, we usually use 1 g per 1 meter of depth, so for 30 meters, that will be a 30g jig. Only when the current is strong i double it and i rarely used more that 60g jig. In the 100 meters depth we use 120-150g
Hey mate that's just what I was recommended by the distributor eh he's more in the know than me haha. But 30g would struggle to get down in 30m in NZ! We have very strong pacific Ocean's with huge tidal change. So that could be why?
@salt.mechanics cheers legend!! Yea always great to learn from others eh hope ya make it to Aus someday!! But just note I'm a Kiwi in NZ haha Very different country 🤙

Hey mate that's just a glow bead usually used for deep sea fishing. The glow under UV light. Fishodavo only uses it to protect his top rod eye from getting wrecked by the split ring although it likely acts as a fish attractant too
Hey mate thanks for watching and the comment!! And I think it's recommended to fish 20+ buuut if ya see in the last part when in fishing with my dad I'm in literally 10m MAX we were using 10-30g jigs and just drifting quickly it worked absolutely mint. Also Ocean Outkast (commented below) uses OL from shore I think too!
Hey mate in this vid they were the larger game pliers optiontackle.co.nz/product/hpa-gameplier/ But unless you're using huge split rings the smaller pliers are fine too. They truly are the best pliers out there!
@BlobEyeMauri hey mate thanks for watching! I'm using an Ocean's Legacy (OL) Origin slow pitch rod with a Poseidon 140R mini Slow Pitch reel Fishodavo is using the same rod and he's got the Saltiga IC-300 Joel i think it's the shimano Ocea Jigger on an OL Elementus (from memory)
@BlobEyeMauri rock fish? I assume you mean small fish? And no these are very powerful reels just very small and light so you can slow pitch. My reel has 20kg drag I've landed nz yellowtail kingfish and big sting rays on this reel
Awesome video! Thanks bro. I’ve been wanting to try this but had no idea what I’m doing 😂 What is the minimum depth you try jigging in? All the gear, no idea…that’s me 😂
@officialWWM 🤣🤣🤣🤣 hahaha takes one to know one!! I always do the all the gear no idea ways. bro if ya get a tiny as 10-20g SPJ that Ocean's Legacy have no you can fish in super shallow depths eh like 10m. but usually 20m+ is optimal. I've done as long as 5 tho 🤙
@officialWWM not necessarily eh in fact some times not at all. Just if there's sign on the sounder really and if ya don't have a sounder drop a whole set of baited sabikis down and drift haha when ya get a jack mack or small snapper then ya might be worth slow pitching. We fish with SPJ over sand quite a bit eh if there's tuatua there
@@fisheatrepeat excellent, thanks for the advice! I do have a sounder but I like your sabiki idea too. I live in Tasmania and there not a lot of accessible reefs around here. Fishing over sandy bottom in 10 t0 30 meters is pretty common for us.
Hey mate just chatted to the boys. They think Davo was using Ocean's Legacy Origin rod and saltiga IC 300 & Joel was using Ocean's Legacy Slow Element rod with Ocea Jigger reel 🤙
Great tutorial. Thank you. Very well done. With regard to SPJ. If you rig the other end of this jig, can you use it for mechanical jigging. What are your thoughts ? Ta. Great video.
Hey mate I'm not the most knowledgeable but @fishodavo has said the below "subject to testing really, the jig is always going to flutter down whichever way you rig it, its not a knife jig so it doesnt sink fast. typically for mechanical jigging its about having a thin jig that sinks fast and lifts fast as thats what enticies kingies to give chase and hammer the jig hard... in saying that Joel (the one in the video) does mechnical jigging with the 300g deep contact as it flutters a bit less than the long contact, but yeah you're paying a higher price for a jig thats designed for SPJ. In theory I think you could use an SPJ but it won't be as effective
I'd like to add that using butterfly jigs or spj jigs for mechanical jigs does end up slowing the jigging speed. For example when i go jigging for Spanish mackerel, i notice that using butterfly jigs always end up w my line getting cut by their teeth as they get further ahead of my jigs when they chase after it. Using a knife jig almost always work out easier and with less chances of the line getting cut.
@darrychristhoper4595 hey mate! This depends a lot on personal preference and the fish you're targeting along with spool capacity of the reel and strand no. Of the braid! In this case I'm use 30lb tasline 8-strabd braid which is strong enough for me and fits enough on my very small spool. You may want heavier fighting bigger fish in deeper water tho. But you do want high quality 8+ strand braid so it is thinnest and behaves best with the rod etc Cheers for watching
Ok but why do all SPJ reels look the same with one giant handle on the crank like it's used for deep sea fishing and then it gets attached to a skinny little rod? Can someone breakdown the science behind SPJ reel design n why they r designed the way they are.
Hey mate I'm not the best SPJ fisherman out there. But I believe I can answer this. Slow pitch is all about moving the lure. And usually in very deep water. A thin spool with high edges means when you're winding you don't need to use your thumb to guide the line, secondly it makes it nice and light cause you're winding all day rather than bait fishing. The handle itself is simply due to gear ratios altho you have gears in the reel. The longer your handle the more internal gears move around and retrieve line for every single turn of your reel. So it makes it much faster to wind in the lure and to make the lure jerk really well with every turn
@@fisheatrepeat so if I had the desire to I could slow pitch jig fish with any baitcaster reel then though correct? It just might not be as convenient or as comfortable?
@chelseapeters7187 yep!! You can definitely spj with anything it's just the effectiveness may be less but with good retrieve rate many people use baitcasters
Reels designed specifically for SPJ have approximately 45 inches of retrieve per crank. Huge advantage when jigging in deeper water. If you’re fishing in 300’ of water, your bait caster will wear you out on the retrieve plus it likely will not have near the line capacity to fish that deep. So major advantages are line capacity, retrieve ratio, light weight compared to other SW reels. Typically will have 30’ braid with a 40-50 flouro top shot. When fishing really deep, 20’ braid with 50’ flouro top shot.
@yehyamneimne9335 yea It's not as good but does still work get some clip ring pliers is easier. You can buy really cheap $4 NZD clip ring pliers from Ali express that work pretty well!
Hey mate 🤷♂️ this is just what I was advised by the Ocean's Legacy NZ distributor & rep but those weight sizes seem to work for me. Also if fishing in US you may have slower water movement overall all I wouldn't know. I do know our pacific ocean is surprisingly fast moving tho. 🤙 But in NZ 150ft being ~ 46m. 30g would take aaages to hit the bottom and unless you were fishing on an extremely calm, low current day, the angle would be about 45°+! As above could well be different for US tho 🤙 Tight lines and thanks for watching!
