- If you're looking to give Slow Pitch Jigging a go for the first time, then this video is to help you achieve that.
I focus on the very basics of Slow Pitch Jigging such as the tools and gear you need, why the falling jig is imporant, how to rig you jig/splitring/assist hooks together, 3 simple techniques to working the jig plus 15 tips to help you get started. There is also underwater footage of the Ocean's Legacy Long Contact so you can see the action it has underwater
This tutorial was filmed as I was teaching Johnny how to Slow Pitch for the first time, we had an awesome adventure fishing off the jet ski around Little Barrier NZ in the best conditions you've ever seen.

Thanks mate!! Yeah best pliers ever, every fisho needs to get a pair
can you repeat the make / model of pliers please.
HPA GamePliers, I've put a link in the description too

Thanks mate!
Awesome vide man thank you! There is so much SPJ content out there but surprisingly few videos like this that actually walk through everyone from start to finish with a beginner. Appreciate you
🙌
Thanks Mike! Glad you enjoyed it, there's another SPJ rod technique video on my channel too, and lots of SPJ fishing videos using different setups

really well done video. thanks!
Thanks!
Very enjoyable Dave well done 👍
Thanks Craig!
Love the videos. Actually teaches things. Been trying to get into the slow pitch jig here in Florida, US and having a hard time. I think I'm better off now. I bought the same rod and love it how it feels. Eager to try it asap. Found hilarious two New Zealanders bringing KFC for lunch on a fishing trip lol.
Thanks for watching, cold KFC for fishing lunch is awesome, we have hot soup noodles in winter haha. Some great US slow pitch groups on Facebook, have you joined?
Well summarized FishoDavo!

@@FishoDavo welcome my friend
Great tips mate! I’m just starting to get into it, can’t wait
Awesome mate, cheers for watching. I just subbed to your channel look forward to watching your SPJ adventures!
@@FishoDavo thanks mate but I don’t really upload to YT much. Bummer I just bought my slow pitch combo yesterday but they only had the ocean legacy origin not the element. Just a question if the drift is pretty fast due to the wind etc do you just use soft plastics or vibes? & mainly use SPJ’s for pretty calm conditions?
I have the Origin, its designed to work the jig best so I normally point the rod down and use the reel to fight the fish, the Element is designed to give more rod lifting power. I mainly SPJ in deeper water, 40m+, drift speed isn't a problem switch to the Ocean's Legacy Long Contact and go heavier, I can SPJ the 210g in 50m in faster drift situations
Where did you buy the origin from?
@@FishoDavo Compleat Angler Rockingham - Perth, WA.
I usually fish in shallower water than yourself so I’ll probably use 40-100g jigs I think
I'm just learning about slow pitch jigging but have a daiwa harrier-x jigging xh rod that I've used for "normal" jigging. Would it be possible to get started with slow pitch jigging with this rod? I will probably be looking at a dedicated rod in the future but for now want to use what I have. Thank you for the tutorial
Another good tip, jig with your back to the sun so you can see when your jig is to close to the surface. My first time trying to SPJ i forgot my sunglasses (not sure if it would have helped much anyways lol) and had the jig fly up out of the water 2 times. Once hit me in the forearm and almost hooked me, left a good bruise. Once almost hooked my friend lol. Having fun learning the ways though! Hope to go out again soon but it's approaching winter time and its gonna get coooold soon also. Keep up the good work! Still new to your channel, however I'm liking what I'm seeing.
Great tip, especially with so many hooks on the jig. My slow pitch action is quite slow, so rare to have the jig fly out of the water
@@FishoDavo Yea I was new and didn't know if my jig was even for SPJ lol. So was experimenting with depths and retrieve and what not. Helps to be deeper I'd assume, was only in about 70 foot of water. I could see how it normally wouldn't be a problem, but it's something I think about now.
Yeah I like to fish SPJ deeper, we normally target around 160 feet
Greatest video, can you tell me what size HPA pliers do you use. Small or large? Thanks
Nice tutorial, new friend here
Thank you!
Really informative ❤
Wonder if you can recommend specs of braid and leader for PE2 rod or similar for 30m or shallower?
Thank you, I use shimano ocea braid and ocea fluorocarbon leader, 30m or shallower PE1.2 to PE1.5 is good.
Great vid! How do you determine the weight of jigs to use? Is there a profile of jigs that you prefer? Thanks for the tips!
Determining the weight is partially trial and error, and a bit from experience. I would say a simple formula would be 2-3g per metre of depth, with slow pitch jigging you can go a bit heavier as the jigs feel light when worked properly, and its important to have the line as vertical as possible. My preferred jig is the Ocean's Legacy Long Contact 170g Sardine colour in 50m of water
Great video thanks. Did your friend catch?
Thank you! Yup he did, learnt the SPJ technique on that trip and started catching
Great turorials and great video bro 🤙🤙🤙 what does the bead on your leader help bro?
Thanks bro, the bead is just to protect the rod tip from the solid ring damaging the eye of the rod
@@FishoDavo I’m new to the game. Just wondering how do we choose rod, reel, line, leader, and jig weights? Depends on the depth of the place i fish or it’s doesn’t matter bro
@@Brian_Vo I think it matters very much to have all the right gear, where are you fishing and what depth?
Thanks for the great info. Is slow pitch jigging effect in shallow water? 20-40 meters?
Thanks for watching. Yup it works, just need to downsize the jigs and gear used

Hey Dave, how do you know what capacity of braid and leader to go for ?
Or is there a video you would recommend to watch for beginners ?
Probably just ask around get advice, questions would be what depth are you fishing, what size fish are you expecting in that area, what are you mainly targeting, is it a reefy area or its safe over sand, what weight jigs you want to work, what does the reel recommend.
hi there, im from indonesia, just learn how to works with jigging , and luckly found your video, it's awesome tutorial sir,😍 easy to understand for beginners like me😁😁. i just bought okuma Convector CV 354 DLX, do this reels good for beginner? im pairing it with Harrow nemesis Light jigging 632LJ -2 PE 1,5 does it good pair??
Looks good, just get started and get better and better gear as you learn
hi there, yesterday i've try my tackle set, and found that when i rotate the handle with upping the rod, my rotation was not smoooth, its wiggle😅, plus..my arm very fast get tired, does that often happening for begginer?@@FishoDavo
@muhammadsubhan346 just takes lots of practice to get smooth action. What weight jig are you fishing?
i have 80gr, 150gr and 200gr, does that macth with my tackle set??@@FishoDavo

The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.
Thanks!
Great ! Which PE Line did you use ? (Diameter) X8 or X4 ?
I think it's PE1.5 x8
@@FishoDavo Thank you
Where did you get the left hand wind reel from?
Online fishing store based in Japan
I'm not arguing, I'm asking. Why do you need to pump the rod? It doesn't make the jig go faster since you're raising and lowering...so it must be the action? Otherwise just reeling the heck out of it would make the jig go just as fast...? Thanks
The main jig action we want from this style is to have the jig flutter down on the descent, to imitate a dying baitfish and entice the predators to strike at it for an easy mean. That's why in this video you see a lot of lifting and dropping of the rod, it's all to make the jig fall.
Can you use the same technique (half wind as you lift) with a spinning reel?
You can but it doesn't feel as natural compared to an overhead. I'm still practicing that technique with a spin reel
Hey Dave, what type of action do you recommend for slow pitch. I have a salty advance rod, but I feel like the action is to fast and it’s not working the lure properly
Hey Roy, I haven't used the salty advance before, but reading about it, it looks to be softer rod more suited to Kabura? What you want to look for in a slow pitch rod is a responsive tip section that is able to load up on the lure weight as you lift it up, and then it rebounds quickly to help you pitch the jig up, which can then give it more fall time. Ideally you want a rod that is designed for Slow Pitch, it's normally in the name or description of the rod
@@FishoDavo thanks Dave. Yea iv looked around in stores and online, a lot of shops say slow jigging rods, but I don’t think that’s the same as slow pitch. Any rods you’d recommend for someone on a budget. Kind of a mid range rod
Hi Roy, where do you live and what's your budget?
@@FishoDavo I live near 30 mins from Thames, Im Near the waikawau boat ramp. But I come to Auckland on the weekend to see family. . I’m looking for a rod around the $200-300 mark.
Ocean's Legacy Slow Element is what I'd recommend
Hi mate
Can I use a spinning reel to do slow pitch jigging
I have a sustain c5000xg and a slow jig rod?
Yup its doable, you would lose a couple of motions that only an overhead can do, such as winding and lifting at the same time, but the basic lift and fall works with spin setup
Do you have a video on it
Can I just wind my reel?
Not yet, I'm still learning Spin SPJ, will make one in the future when I get better at it. The spin reel doesn't have the torque and balance of an overhead reel, that's why I find it harder to SPJ with, but I'm sure it can work with some practice, mainly need to get the falling action to entice the fish to bite
What reel are you using ?
Daiwa Saltiga IC 300HL
what pound braid?
30lb
Where can I buy that rod protector? Can you send me a link
Where do you live?
United States but I’m willing to pay overseas shipping
Johnny Jigs in the US sells the Ocean's Legacy Rod Protectors
Thanks
Le nom de la canne et le moulini?
Hello are you asking name of the rod? It is in the description of the video
you're placed the front pair of hooks at the wrong place , it shld be at the side with the eye of the jig and not behind the eye
How come?
@@FishoDavo I am not sure how come you did that
😂😂
