Mario kart 7 actually hold up surprisingly well. When you're playing it on a 3ds it actually looks decent, and the 3D feature is implemented really well

El Diablo: No we don't. Mario Kart 8 is a recent game that is still easily available especially with this Deluxe edition and you shouldn't be emulating it. I'm sure DigitalFoundry don't want to promote piracy. Besides, one of the things that make Nintendo games so good is their incredible polish, and you're just throwing that out the window when emulating because of inconsistent performance, crashes, and glitches.

Also, like I said, most games still have glitches and inconsistent petformance on emulators, and thus drag the experience down compared to playing on the original hardware in the case of Nintendo games, which are usually very polished and run very well. Sure if all you care about is a higher resolution, great, but most people will prefer a flawless experience over a flawed, higher resolution one.

A person with a couple of good emulators could game for years and be totally satisfied with some great gaming. Also there's more attention to smaller details in the switch port. Such as the confetti on the track at 3:05 stays on the floor on the switch port where as the wii u one doesn't :)

Yes Nintendo is re-releasing this full price. But keep in mind we get ALL DLC tracks and characters plus extra characters plus 3 new battle modes plus original battle mode tracks. Not to mention improvements/expansion on game mechanics, items, resolution, framerate.
all the technical analysis is kinda besides the point given how beautiful and cohesive the art style is, there's something about the lighting and the art design that makes the world feel like a consistent universe

A couple of improvements you didn't mention; motion blur during a speed boost has been redesigned, and the standard kart model has a higher polygon count (compare the shape of the exhausts - the Wii U one is almost octagonal, Switch circular)
-The Wii U version already felt incredibly smooth in 1-2 players modes; now it will be flawless! -60fps in 3-4 players Split-Screen would have been sweet, but just the 1080p will make a big difference in clarity for Split-Screen. -Speaking of 1080p, the game already looked phenomenal at 720p, but aliasing was a bit too apparent when not in motion (like the beginning of races), I can't wait to see how it will look at a native 1080p!! -Loading times were just a bit too long on Wii U, now it will be perfect. -Glad to see texture filtering improved, even if it's just slightly, because the poor filtering was very apparent on Rainbow Roads. -Battle Modes looks freaking awesome!!! If you didn't have a Wii U and never played this game, GET A SWITCH PEOPLE because this is the best Mario Kart ever made and you'll be playing hours on end (if you have friends).
I wouldn't say "pathetic" is the right word. After all, so many games on PS and Xbox just don't have split-screen AT ALL these days anymore because it's too demanding and technically difficult to implement according to devs. Besides, a locked 30fps is better than an unlocked 60fps, and MAYBE they could have lowered the resolution to 720p or implemented a dynamic solution like Fast RMX does, but the bottleneck probably lies with the CPU being taxed too much rather than the GPU since Mario Kart is quite a bit more complex than Fast RMX because of its richer environments, more players, and items. Btw, in case you missed it, because of the trick they used, sure visually it's 30fps, but in terms of input lag, it doesn't have more lag than 60fps; it's still 16.67ms. So gameplay-wise there is no compromise apart from blurrier motion.
The jump from 3DS to Switch is massive. The Switch is exceptional when it comes to being a handheld. As a home console it's no jaw dropper, but the fun is still there and in most cases they're running in a clean 1080p.
You guys did a really great job with all the comparisons, and it's super fascinating to see the generational leap as a handheld from 3DS to Switch. With so few people picking up the Wii U, this is gonna be a great game for newfound Switch owners. Can't wait!

Just got this for Switch last night and playing this thing in your hands is just crazy... Breath of the Wild is very impressive as well but seeing this super colorful game running at a locked 60fps in your hands is something else.
Of course I want new games. But asking for a Rocket League port isn't taking away time from Nintendo's 1st party/2nd party developers. I just think Rocket League would be perfect for the Switch. It has Nintendo vibes written all over it.

Switch is definitely an under powered home console but the leap from 3DS to Switch in handheld mode is just insane. Also Nintendo needs to implement AA in their games..........
Almighty Nintendo Pharoh there are aa techs that have almost no impact on performance like smaa. I dont understand why Nintendo doesnt seems to care about aliasing. In the past, Nintendo 64 was advertising antialiasing... Zelda with smaa would improve greatly.

Aaron Storm I'd argue 30 is more than playable in all games regardless of single player, multiplayer, action, racing, shooting, etc, etc. The majority of people surveyed year after year agree graphics are more important than frame-rates even developers like Insomniac Games has done their own surveys and research including play testing and they concluded frame-rate

I loved what they did at 4:46. I hardly ever use the Switch in docked mode, it's a handheld system and I'm largely out of the house. The difference I tend to experience is between 3DS and Switch, not WiiU and Switch. Still not sure *why* they only showed 1080p there, though!

I'm getting really sick and tired of ignorant people in comment sections looking at Wii U games PORTED to the Switch, and assuming there are no graphical improvements because the Switch isn't more powerful than the Wii U, and make the most idiotic comments like "oh, it's an amazing handheld, but SOOOOOOOO underpowered for a home console." For crying out loud, there are actual multi platform titles out there that let you compare directly from PS4 to Switch, and the versions so far in the majority of those titles, are near identical versions, with only a few minor effect or lighting differences, and maybe a hiccup or two in frame rate. The Switch is weaker than XB1/PS4, but it can still play games at an almost equal level. It's not getting the credit it deserves by people who don't understand that not all ports will be remasters. Even DF makes it clear that the Switch is capable of far superior graphics than this game, when the game is built from scratch on Switch hardware.
garvensman true but on that note those are not impressive graphical games that they have between those platforms; sorry Legos, dragon quest, skyrim are not impressively demanding games not to mention there old tittles now I'd be very impressed to see games ported like Dishonored 2, dexus X, doom, the Witcher 3 running on switch even if they had to tune those games down abit it would still be very impressive but we'll never see those because the switch isn't powerful enough to give you a great experience with those tittles, the switch is gonna be a great system for games made exclusively for it that's were it will shine the most Imo.
Nasheem whye Skyrim is the remastered version, Lego City has improvements over the Wii U version, and any game that uses UE4 is running at nearly identical levels. That's key. It's a powerful engine, and if Switch can basically run the same levels with a couple effects toned down, it can run many other engines. Nothing says Witcher 3 can't run on Switch. It's already been stated Darksouls 3 has been tested on Switch and it ran with satisfying results, as in it wasn't drastically compromised from the original version. Time will tell. Sonic Forces will be a big test. It's a brand new graphical engine being used, more powerful than the original Hedgehog engine. If it's the same on Switch as PS4, tats more good evidence. The Switch just came out and nobody knew if it was going to flop. Looks like it's a huge hit. 3rd parties are taking note, and we may see bigger titles on it coming down the pipe.

They didn't feel the need to rebuild it from scratch and make the trees fully 3D just because they could. Besides, you are blazing by so fast that it's not meant to matter. Most racing games do this by default anyway.

The Tegra X1 is literally the best possible hardware Nintendo could have picked for the Switch. The Maxwell cores support double rate FP16, which the GPUs in the PS4 and Xbox One don't even have. And Unreal Engine 4 shaders are mostly run in FP16 code. ALL the pixel shaders are written in FP16, for example. When you consider the form factor of the Switch, it isn't "underpowered" by any means.
It is underpowered in the way that it could be much better. Even with UE4s advanced FP16 support the improvement should be arround 10-20% in games in the best case. With just 1/3 of the normal GPU clock its relativly weak for a mobile SoC. There isnt a real need for it. Maxwell have its sweetpot at arround 1 Ghz. When Nintendo would have used a SoC in a 16nm Finfet instead of a Planar Bulk energy Efficiency would have been much better. Overall an upgrade to Pascal would have been alot better with Pascals heavily improved brandwitch compression. I bet the fan itself consumes arround 1 Watt allone. A good passiv cooling system like in the Smach Z could easily handel that SoC. With a passiv cooling system ,Finfet and maybe even A72 or even A 73 Cores the GPU could have easily run 1 Ghz in portable mode without consuming much more energy. This way the Switch would have arround 3 times the GPU Power and arround 20% more CPU Power. There are thinks that I really like on the switch like that they arent using a Full-HD screen (nativ resolution is always the best) and that it comes with a USB-C port for charging but the SoC and the cooling is not part for it. Maybe Nintendo releases a Switch lite in a few years with a SoC shrinked to 10nm LPP or even 7nn (risk production at TSMC is already running and they claim that a A73 Core can reach nearly 4 Ghz with it) or a fan but wen I see the 3ds that didnt got shrinks at all im not very enthusiastic.
Hardwarehelfer newer chips mean more expensive hardware and low production rate as the manufacturing process is more complex and the supply chain is not streamlined. People are already calling the Switch overpriced. Any bump in the price would have largely affected the sales. Tegra X1 is a really good choice. The X1 on the Nvidia shield was massively underutilized due to low sales and the nature of Android gaming. A FP16 based engine would bring Switch closer to the Xbox One. But not all engines are FP16 based I am guessing. That would be an uphill battle for Nintendo to convince 3rd party engine makers. But if the console sales and attach rates are good, I guess it will be possible. As for downclocking in portable mode, there is not way out. Even 700$ smartphones and tablets do it all the time. Passive cooling is much inferior and always be inferior compared to active cooling. They could have added some liquid cooling (if that is even possible) but again, the cost. Battery life is the most easiest thing to increase once the price of the components come down 2 years down the line. Nintendo can just put a beefier battery in their next design iteration. Also, the Smach Z is a scam :) I can link the video proof of it if you want. So I would refrain any comparisons of an actual selling product with it.
Yeah, I noticed that too when I uploaded a 1080p mario kart 8 video. Games with a lot of motion and details look way worse because of youtubes low bitrate, even on 1080p.
I honestly don't know what Nintendo has against anti-aliasing, but I wish they would get over it. I'd take 720p with AA over 1080p with NO AA anyway. I hope they realize the benefit of AA soon.
Especially considering that they were completely in love with AA in the '90s, heaping it on all their N64 games even to the detriment of clarity and performance! Though I still prefer 1080 without AA over 720 with AA, assuming it's on a 1080p screen.
The game seems like the ideal entry in the series, honestly. It fixes all the issues 8 had (no battle mode to name the most obvious) while adding minor new or returning mechanics like double items to deepen the gameplay one level further, all while being the best looking game in the series. And portable.

Can't wait to get it. I never owned a Wii U but the whole idea of portability is what made me want the switch. For once I'm actually excited for plane and car rides because it's time where I can just play on my switch. I would have never bought a switch if it wasn't for the portability though.

GPU doesn't matter in Cemu as long as it's not a true potato. Even budget cards can do 4k60fps in MK8. What matters is that they actually use the graphic packs available to make the game look good instead of using the base game on Cemu with no resolution or shadow resolution increase

Playing this on PC with Cemu. While incredibly inefficient in terms of resource use, it runs mostly at 60fps. Can't complain. Takes me back to Nintendo DS era..
Mario Kart 7 is such a unique part of the series in that it perfected drifting. I can hardly play any title before it because the drifting is so hard to control. I started playing MK7 again and how that I've hacked my 3ds I've downloaded a bunch of custom tracks to help breathe life into it. I'm really considering picking up a Wii U mainly just for MK8 since they're so cheap

However, the failure of the Wii U is the reason the Switch and the 3DS have kept on getting ports, remakes and alternatives of the Wii U games. To buy a Wii U today, you are completely wasting your money. I’d be happy with just Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Maker for 3DS, Super Smash Bros. For 3DS, Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World, Splatoon 2, Super Mario 3D Land, etc. Sorry Wii U. You were a waste of money.

I dunno with every mario kart since the DS version, it's like they improve on stuff like Online play but at the same time start taking fun stuff away like Mission Mode. That was so much fun! It even had fun boss fights and shit! Reminded me of Diddy Kong Racing! But going as far as taking out battle mode arenas in 8...that was just like...Man what the fuck you doing nintendo ahaha.

Donald Duck Wrong the X1 chip is the most powerful mobile chip to date.Its way more powerful than a PS3 or Xbox 360 according to nvidia it can even run crysis.Also it's a custom X1 chip meaning they build it around gaming and the capabilities of the switch so it's more powerful than any chip on a mobile phone.The fact that it plays Mario kart 1080p 60fps and on the Wii U 720p 60 proves it's more powerful and it's just a port imagine if they build it around the switch.Let the system stretch its legs no console ever releases their best looking games at launch you will be surprised of what the X1 chip can do.
It doesn't run at max clocks so it wont throttle, correct me if I'm wrong but the NVIDIA Shield throttles at max clocks and even the clocks the Switch are at, its still good

It doesn't have to support current AAA games to get third party support. Did you notice that the ds and 3ds got a ton of third party support? Having third party support doesn't only mean ports and multi-plat games, third party companies can make games specifically for the switch.
Looks incredible and while I know it isn't a huge ton of work over the Wii-U version, as a Nintendo fan who skipped over that really bad looking system I'm delighted that they're just taking the software which they invested the time on it and bringing that over to what will hopefully be another Wii in terms of sales and success for Nintendo. Why not salvage all the work that went into trying to save the WiiU, no point leaving it to rot on a system that no one wanted (13m sales... I know that isn't no one but still it isn't a lot)
This game shouldn't be 60$ imo. It's the same game as last year with minimal technical upgrades. All they really did was fix the horrible battle mode that should never have been the way it was on wii u.
PikaPlayzHD Ok well. Let's look at what their competition is doing. God of war 3 came out on ps3 in March 2010. The remaster that had considerably higher framerate and higher resolution - (the definitive game) came out in July 2015 on ps4 . However it was priced at 30$ CAD. Not sure what it was US since Canadian dollar has been getting screwed royally these past few years but you see it wasn't full 60$ improvement on a new platform coming out more than 5 years afterwards. Being sold to you again but at a lower cost. Mario kart is no different. I'd say the differences between amount of improvement for God of war 3 is more than the improvement for Mario kart 8 deluxe. God of war 3 ran around 30-40fps on ps3. Getting it to locked 60 and higher resolution is a significant bump compared to resolution bump minus 1fps drop on turns.
The biggest rip off remaster I heard of was Deadpool being released at a $50 price tag an on top of it Activision didn't fix hardly anything with it. No frame rate issues weren't resolved nor did they even fix the resolution. Your better off keeping the last gen console versions or directly going with the pc version a that point.
I wonder if the successor to the 3DS will get a resolution bump. They can leave the touch screen at 240p, that's fine. But bumping the main screen up to 480p would be awesome! Resolution doesn't matter much on the DS since the games are always incredible, but you wouldn't see me complaining :p
DieHappy Pretty sure Nintendo hasn't ever tried to say it's a new game. I'm also certain it was a game that under sold it's potential because its console didn't sell well at all, and it's worth the port with extra content and DLC all included, on a system that may allow the game to sell better.
Based on the Tegra X1 specs, nintendo could (and should) clock it @900 mhz in docked mode, resulting in a tdp 20% lower than the 2015 Shield TV, and 460gflops; and 400mhz in portable mode (about 1/6th of the shield TV's power consumption) and 205gflops. That boost would allow nintendo to use at the very least trilinear +2x anisitropic filtering, post processing anti aliasing, and much better textures (about 4x as big as in wii U). They have the hardware right there, it's only a matter of sacrificing 20 minutes of battery in portable mode, and running the fan higher in docked mode, to make games like BOTW run at native 1080p while looking much better.

One thing i always love about nintendo is that their games always look clean n smooth. Even with no anti aliasing i=shit looks great, edges look smoother than anything else without AA n thats insane. I had no idea that wii U version was 720p and I can mostly tell the difference between that n 1080p. Reminds me of Journey on PS4, 720p but looks like 1080p

Mario Kart has always been my go to racer. I loved it on Wii U. I haven't played it in months though. Not sure sure if I'll be racing to shell out another $60 for the graphic upgrades and battle mode. It will be interesting to see the Switch servers in action.
Switch has a ARM mobile processor just like 3DS and completly different to a home system architecture like x86-64 on PS4/One or Power -PC on PS3/360/Wii U So Switch is a mobile device like 3DS, Vita, Samsung Galaxy S7 or Google Pixel C, is a portable console first, even there are games that only can play on portable mode.

Funny how people complain about this port, only 14 millions of Wii U have been sold, almost nobody have a Wii U. The Switch works well for now, it's a chance to the one who have not a Wii U. I have a Wii U, but I do not own MK8 on it, so I'm getting it on Switch, I'm glad I didn't bought it until now, I'll get the ultimate version on Switch (handheld possibility / 1080p when docked)

Mario kart 7 actually hold up surprisingly well. When you're playing it on a 3ds it actually looks decent, and the 3D feature is implemented really well

Don't get me wrong the switch is cool for what it is and will apeal heavily to a certain demographic of people especially being that it's portable but I feel It would of appealed more to gamers if it were marketed and advertised as a 3ds successor and Nintendo annoucing that they have a PS4 or Xbox killer following up with the switch, they had the opportunity to make so serious money and didn't capitalize on the opportunity.

El Diablo: No we don't. Mario Kart 8 is a recent game that is still easily available especially with this Deluxe edition and you shouldn't be emulating it. I'm sure DigitalFoundry don't want to promote piracy.
Besides, one of the things that make Nintendo games so good is their incredible polish, and you're just throwing that out the window when emulating because of inconsistent performance, crashes, and glitches.
El Diablo I know that, everyone knows that, but the vast majority of people emulating games do it illegally. Also, like I said, most games still have glitches and inconsistent petformance on emulators, and thus drag the experience down compared to playing on the original hardware in the case of Nintendo games, which are usually very polished and run very well. Sure if all you care about is a higher resolution, great, but most people will prefer a flawless experience over a flawed, higher resolution one.
@Merry Blind. Dude you are so wrong. Emulation has come so far beyond your comment that it's laughable. A person with a couple of good emulators could game for years and be totally satisfied with some great gaming. The legality of it all is an entirely different story but the quality of the best emulators today is frighteningly good. Read more. Assume less.
My experience mainly comes from Dolphin emulator. Last time I messed around with it was about a year ago and many games didn't run flawlessly.

Yes Nintendo is re-releasing this full price. But keep in mind we get ALL DLC tracks and characters plus extra characters plus 3 new battle modes plus original battle mode tracks.

A couple of improvements you didn't mention; motion blur during a speed boost has been redesigned, and the standard kart model has a higher polygon count (compare the shape of the exhausts - the Wii U one is almost octagonal, Switch circular)
-The Wii U version already felt incredibly smooth in 1-2 players modes; now it will be flawless!
-60fps in 3-4 players Split-Screen would have been sweet, but just the 1080p will make a big difference in clarity for Split-Screen.
-Speaking of 1080p, the game already looked phenomenal at 720p, but aliasing was a bit too apparent when not in motion (like the beginning of races), I can't wait to see how it will look at a native 1080p!!
-Loading times were just a bit too long on Wii U, now it will be perfect.
-Glad to see texture filtering improved, even if it's just slightly, because the poor filtering was very apparent on Rainbow Roads.
-Battle Modes looks freaking awesome!!!
If you didn't have a Wii U and never played this game, GET A SWITCH PEOPLE because this is the best Mario Kart ever made and you'll be playing hours on end (if you have friends).

I wouldn't say "pathetic" is the right word. After all, so many games on PS and Xbox just don't have split-screen AT ALL these days anymore because it's too demanding and technically difficult to implement according to devs. Besides, a locked 30fps is better than an unlocked 60fps, and MAYBE they could have lowered the resolution to 720p or implemented a dynamic solution like Fast RMX does, but the bottleneck probably lies with the CPU being taxed too much rather than the GPU since Mario Kart is quite a bit more complex than Fast RMX because of its richer environments, more players, and items.
Btw, in case you missed it, because of the trick they used, sure visually it's 30fps, but in terms of input lag, it doesn't have more lag than 60fps; it's still 16.67ms. So gameplay-wise there is no compromise apart from blurrier motion.

The jump from 3DS to Switch is massive. The Switch is exceptional when it comes to being a handheld. As a home console it's no jaw dropper, but the fun is still there and in most cases they're running in a clean 1080p.
You guys did a really great job with all the comparisons, and it's super fascinating to see the generational leap as a handheld from 3DS to Switch.
With so few people picking up the Wii U, this is gonna be a great game for newfound Switch owners. Can't wait!

Just got this for Switch last night and playing this thing in your hands is just crazy... Breath of the Wild is very impressive as well but seeing this super colorful game running at a locked 60fps in your hands is something else.

I'd argue 30 is more than playable in all games regardless of single player, multiplayer, action, racing, shooting, etc, etc. The majority of people surveyed year after year agree graphics are more important than frame-rates even developers like Insomniac Games has done their own surveys and research including play testing and they concluded frame-rate
I mind it cause it's a racing game and Fast RMX proved it was possible to do 60fps with all four players. So, it baffles me and I hope they patch it, but we know damn well they won't.

I loved what they did at 4:46. I hardly ever use the Switch in docked mode, it's a handheld system and I'm largely out of the house. The difference I tend to experience is between 3DS and Switch, not WiiU and Switch. Still not sure *why* they only showed 1080p there, though!

I'm getting really sick and tired of ignorant people in comment sections looking at Wii U games PORTED to the Switch, and assuming there are no graphical improvements because the Switch isn't more powerful than the Wii U, and make the most idiotic comments like "oh, it's an amazing handheld, but SOOOOOOOO underpowered for a home console."
For crying out loud, there are actual multi platform titles out there that let you compare directly from PS4 to Switch, and the versions so far in the majority of those titles, are near identical versions, with only a few minor effect or lighting differences, and maybe a hiccup or two in frame rate.
The Switch is weaker than XB1/PS4, but it can still play games at an almost equal level. It's not getting the credit it deserves by people who don't understand that not all ports will be remasters. Even DF makes it clear that the Switch is capable of far superior graphics than this game, when the game is built from scratch on Switch hardware.
garvensman true but on that note those are not impressive graphical games that they have between those platforms; sorry Legos, dragon quest, skyrim are not impressively demanding games not to mention there old tittles now I'd be very impressed to see games ported like Dishonored 2, dexus X, doom, the Witcher 3 running on switch even if they had to tune those games down abit it would still be very impressive but we'll never see those because the switch isn't powerful enough to give you a great experience with those tittles, the switch is gonna be a great system for games made exclusively for it that's were it will shine the most Imo.
Nasheem whye Skyrim is the remastered version, Lego City has improvements over the Wii U version, and any game that uses UE4 is running at nearly identical levels. That's key. It's a powerful engine, and if Switch can basically run the same levels with a couple effects toned down, it can run many other engines.
Nothing says Witcher 3 can't run on Switch. It's already been stated Darksouls 3 has been tested on Switch and it ran with satisfying results, as in it wasn't drastically compromised from the original version.
Time will tell. Sonic Forces will be a big test. It's a brand new graphical engine being used, more powerful than the original Hedgehog engine. If it's the same on Switch as PS4, tats more good evidence.
The Switch just came out and nobody knew if it was going to flop. Looks like it's a huge hit. 3rd parties are taking note, and we may see bigger titles on it coming down the pipe.

They didn't feel the need to rebuild it from scratch and make the trees fully 3D just because they could. Besides, you are blazing by so fast that it's not meant to matter. Most racing games do this by default anyway.

The Tegra X1 is literally the best possible hardware Nintendo could have picked for the Switch. The Maxwell cores support double rate FP16, which the GPUs in the PS4 and Xbox One don't even have. And Unreal Engine 4 shaders are mostly run in FP16 code. ALL the pixel shaders are written in FP16, for example. When you consider the form factor of the Switch, it isn't "underpowered" by any means.

It is underpowered in the way that it could be much better.
Even with UE4s advanced FP16 support the improvement should be arround 10-20% in games in the best case.
With just 1/3 of the normal GPU clock its relativly weak for a mobile SoC.
There isnt a real need for it.
Maxwell have its sweetpot at arround 1 Ghz.
When Nintendo would have used a SoC in a 16nm Finfet instead of a Planar Bulk energy Efficiency would have been much better.
Overall an upgrade to Pascal would have been alot better with Pascals heavily improved brandwitch compression.
I bet the fan itself consumes arround 1 Watt allone.
A good passiv cooling system like in the Smach Z could easily handel that SoC.
With a passiv cooling system ,Finfet and maybe even A72 or even A 73 Cores the GPU could have easily run 1 Ghz in portable mode without consuming much more energy.
This way the Switch would have arround 3 times the GPU Power and arround 20% more CPU Power.
There are thinks that I really like on the switch like that they arent using a Full-HD screen (nativ resolution is always the best) and that it comes with a USB-C port for charging but the SoC and the cooling is not part for it.
Maybe Nintendo releases a Switch lite in a few years with a SoC shrinked to 10nm LPP or even 7nn (risk production at TSMC is already running and they claim that a A73 Core can reach nearly 4 Ghz with it) or a fan but wen I see the 3ds that didnt got shrinks at all im not very enthusiastic.
Hardwarehelfer newer chips mean more expensive hardware and low production rate as the manufacturing process is more complex and the supply chain is not streamlined. People are already calling the Switch overpriced. Any bump in the price would have largely affected the sales. Tegra X1 is a really good choice. The X1 on the Nvidia shield was massively underutilized due to low sales and the nature of Android gaming. A FP16 based engine would bring Switch closer to the Xbox One. But not all engines are FP16 based I am guessing. That would be an uphill battle for Nintendo to convince 3rd party engine makers. But if the console sales and attach rates are good, I guess it will be possible. As for downclocking in portable mode, there is not way out. Even 700$ smartphones and tablets do it all the time. Passive cooling is much inferior and always be inferior compared to active cooling. They could have added some liquid cooling (if that is even possible) but again, the cost. Battery life is the most easiest thing to increase once the price of the components come down 2 years down the line. Nintendo can just put a beefier battery in their next design iteration.

Yeah, I noticed that too when I uploaded a 1080p mario kart 8 video. Games with a lot of motion and details look way worse because of youtubes low bitrate, even on 1080p.

I honestly don't know what Nintendo has against anti-aliasing, but I wish they would get over it. I'd take 720p with AA over 1080p with NO AA anyway. I hope they realize the benefit of AA soon.

The game seems like the ideal entry in the series, honestly. It fixes all the issues 8 had (no battle mode to name the most obvious) while adding minor new or returning mechanics like double items to deepen the gameplay one level further, all while being the best looking game in the series. And portable.

Can't wait to get it. I never owned a Wii U but the whole idea of portability is what made me want the switch. For once I'm actually excited for plane and car rides because it's time where I can just play on my switch. I would have never bought a switch if it wasn't for the portability though.

GPU doesn't matter in Cemu as long as it's not a true potato. Even budget cards can do 4k60fps in MK8. What matters is that they actually use the graphic packs available to make the game look good instead of using the base game on Cemu with no resolution or shadow resolution increase

Playing this on PC with Cemu. While incredibly inefficient in terms of resource use, it runs mostly at 60fps. Can't complain. Takes me back to Nintendo DS era..

Mario Kart 7 is such a unique part of the series in that it perfected drifting. I can hardly play any title before it because the drifting is so hard to control. I started playing MK7 again and how that I've hacked my 3ds I've downloaded a bunch of custom tracks to help breathe life into it. I'm really considering picking up a Wii U mainly just for MK8 since they're so cheap

However, the failure of the Wii U is the reason the Switch and the 3DS have kept on getting ports, remakes and alternatives of the Wii U games. To buy a Wii U today, you are completely wasting your money. I’d be happy with just Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Maker for 3DS, Super Smash Bros. For 3DS, Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World, Splatoon 2, Super Mario 3D Land, etc.

I dunno with every mario kart since the DS version, it's like they improve on stuff like Online play but at the same time start taking fun stuff away like Mission Mode. That was so much fun! It even had fun boss fights and shit! Reminded me of Diddy Kong Racing! But going as far as taking out battle mode arenas in 8...that was just like...Man what the fuck you doing nintendo ahaha.

It doesn't run at max clocks so it wont throttle, correct me if I'm wrong but the NVIDIA Shield throttles at max clocks and even the clocks the Switch are at, its still good

It doesn't have to support current AAA games to get third party support. Did you notice that the ds and 3ds got a ton of third party support?
Having third party support doesn't only mean ports and multi-plat games, third party companies can make games specifically for the switch.
Looks incredible and while I know it isn't a huge ton of work over the Wii-U version, as a Nintendo fan who skipped over that really bad looking system I'm delighted that they're just taking the software which they invested the time on it and bringing that over to what will hopefully be another Wii in terms of sales and success for Nintendo.
Why not salvage all the work that went into trying to save the WiiU, no point leaving it to rot on a system that no one wanted (13m sales... I know that isn't no one but still it isn't a lot)
This game shouldn't be 60$ imo. It's the same game as last year with minimal technical upgrades. All they really did was fix the horrible battle mode that should never have been the way it was on wii u.

Ok well. Let's look at what their competition is doing. God of war 3 came out on ps3 in March 2010. The remaster that had considerably higher framerate and higher resolution - (the definitive game) came out in July 2015 on ps4 . However it was priced at 30$ CAD. Not sure what it was US since Canadian dollar has been getting screwed royally these past few years but you see it wasn't full 60$ improvement on a new platform coming out more than 5 years afterwards. Being sold to you again but at a lower cost.
Mario kart is no different. I'd say the differences between amount of improvement for God of war 3 is more than the improvement for Mario kart 8 deluxe. God of war 3 ran around 30-40fps on ps3. Getting it to locked 60 and higher resolution is a significant bump compared to resolution bump minus 1fps drop on turns.

The biggest rip off remaster I heard of was Deadpool being released at a $50 price tag an on top of it Activision didn't fix hardly anything with it. No frame rate issues weren't resolved nor did they even fix the resolution. Your better off keeping the last gen console versions or directly going with the pc version a that point.
I wonder if the successor to the 3DS will get a resolution bump. They can leave the touch screen at 240p, that's fine. But bumping the main screen up to 480p would be awesome! Resolution doesn't matter much on the DS since the games are always incredible, but you wouldn't see me complaining :p

Nah. To me Deluxe means the old game + goodies and that's what we have here with all the DLC included and three battle modes.
Based on the Tegra X1 specs, nintendo could (and should) clock it @900 mhz in docked mode, resulting in a tdp 20% lower than the 2015 Shield TV, and 460gflops; and 400mhz in portable mode (about 1/6th of the shield TV's power consumption) and 205gflops.
That boost would allow nintendo to use at the very least trilinear +2x anisitropic filtering, post processing anti aliasing, and much better textures (about 4x as big as in wii U). They have the hardware right there, it's only a matter of sacrificing 20 minutes of battery in portable mode, and running the fan higher in docked mode, to make games like BOTW run at native 1080p while looking much better.
THIS IS WAY BETTER THAN THAT TRASH PS4/PRO OF A CONSOLE. SWITCH AND PC = BAE. trash ps4 console lol, not original in anyway nor form, always copying from others.
One thing i always love about nintendo is that their games always look clean n smooth. Even with no anti aliasing i=shit looks great, edges look smoother than anything else without AA n thats insane.

Both versions are beautiful. The difference is quite small. All these details only when the artificial parsing: the freeze frames, zoom, etc.
Not on the tv. 720p vs 1080p on a modern large screen is a huge difference.

Mario Kart has always been my go to racer. I loved it on Wii U. I haven't played it in months though. Not sure sure if I'll be racing to shell out another $60 for the graphic upgrades and battle mode. It will be interesting to see the Switch servers in action.
