- The arrival of a new first-party game for Nintendo Switch is always a special event, and the combination package of Super Mario 3D World and Bowser's Fury is no exception. The games are excellent and the technology is fascinating - as John reveals.

As someone who completed 100% the game on Wii U i can warmly recommended this one to switch owner , especially if you play it with someone!
I'm gonna try for 100% completion on the Switch 🤠
This is true! It’s an absolute masterpiece and quite possibly in my top three favourite games of all time!

Of course you would. Nintendo users love getting bent over by Nintendo

That's the only thing I didn't like in BOTW since I had to spend the time waiting for the rain to stop instead of playing the game.

@@vivid8979 The review embargo for 3D World + Bowsers Fury lifted yesterday, at which time DF released this video ;) .
Embargo?
The "shadow issue" noted with the boxes appears to be related to the type of box. Watch at around 6:10 when Mario hits the POW block and they all change the shadows no longer show the striped effect.
Man, this soundtrack for Bowser’s Fury is a banger.
I agree. Awesome melodies and arrangements in perfect harmony. A future classic!
It is awesome but it gets a bit repetitive sadly. I already played a few hours and the music you hear in the video is pretty much what you will hear the whole time.
The photo mode is the Next-Gen Benchmark !!
Switch 2/Nintendo’s next console: Can it run Bowser’s Fury Photo Mode?
Yuzu benchmark
That's weird how Bowser Fury is 30 fps for handheld. I would not have expected Nintendo to do that, especially because Odyssey ran great
Odyssey its a fully Open World game as Bowser Fury?
I think 3D World is the most fun I've had with a Mario game since Mario 64 - I feel like it was received less warmly than I thought it deserved the first time. Glad so many more people will have a chance to experience it. I absolutely adored it on Wii U, and can't wait to get my hands on it again - and Bowser's Fury looks more than just a nice bonus.
People will still just ignore 3D World and focus on Bowser's Fury (which I didn't like much at all), because it's the new thing, even if they haven't played the original before.
NPCs do be like that.
@@steel5897 good grief you're a downer
At 14:20 you helped me understand how to get that cat coin, so thanks Digital Foundry 🤣👍🏻
Never had a Wii U so the switch version is a welcome surprise. Will be getting this on Friday no questions
Same here. I've enjoyed picking up all the Wii U ports on the Switch, and appreciate they're giving this one some extra love.
You won’t be disappointed!
You can use the touchscreen on the Switch in handheld mode when playing the levels that use touch, to avoid having to use that cursor
Bowser's fury looks like a cross between Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Odyssey 🤔
Played it a bunch and it honestly takes the bad parts of both and only a little bit of the good. 3D World is like the opposite of Odyssey in that it has incredible platforming level design but pretty limited mechanics, Odyssey has incredible mechanics but awful level design. Bowser's Fury takes Odyssey's open, weak level design and marries it with 3D World's limited control scheme and mechanics. Plus, I play 3D World to get AWAY from the collectathon nonsense, so the inclusion is particularly insulting to me.
Not a great fan of it, but the original game is still amazing.
@@steel5897 here’s the thing Odyssy takes more from 64 and sunshine with open levels and multiple moons in a single area
@@steel5897 you think Odyssey has bad level design? It is by far the best 3d mario game as of now in my opinion. Great controls, mechanics, soundtrack and levels to me. Bowsers fury looks a lot more like. Nintendo decided "hey open world helped BOTW I wonder how Mario fans would like Open World Mario?" I personally do not like the thought of open world Mario unless it is some Mario and Luigi Superstar saga that is an RPG.
@@Gravy1255 are you really saying that Boringssey is better than the 2 Galaxy games?
@@PurpleSlays yes lol. I much prefer Odyssey and never once found it boring. In fact I found it more fun, the cappy functionality made it fresh and the controls were a lot more fluid. Plus the boss fights were fun and entertaining (big dragon anyone? Final escape when Mario take control of Bowser? Mario swimming in stew?) The soundtrack was also a bop at all times. I love all 3D mario games though so.
Bowser's Fury is fascinating and bizarre in the most Nintendo way possible, I love it. I wonder if it's just one small little experiment (there are many in Nintendo's vast history) or a preview of something bigger in the future
Nintendo is trash
Bowser's Fury is a triumph in concept and execution. I love the Kaiju idea and open ended design. The future of 3D Mario is looking very bright indeed.
Bowser's Fury in particular has some of the best Mario music period. Almost every track during the adventure is freaking amazing.
Now I'm always going to see the weird shadow on the boxes! Thanks Digital Foundry!

The game is insanely small in size on switch. Only ~3GB and that's including bowser's fury. I'd have expected atleast 5GB+

I wish there was an option for a performance mode in handheld mode for browsers fury. Even if it meant using a dynamic resolution to improve framerate
I don't think people would like to play in 480p mode though.
@@neoasura depends i suppose doom wolfenstein and doom eternal hang around that resolution and while blurry, still look good enough on switches small screen
Seems like they made the right compromise. You can't have a game look really crappy. Makes the brand look bad. But I get your point, they could have given you the option in settings perhaps. It just proves the Switch needs to be updated. It worked great for very simple games but they need a pro version or something new to expand what they did this gen.
Awesome! This does make me wish that Nintendo would add an option for "max performance" even when undocked. I'm okay with half the battery life if it means better undocked performance.
Lol
I guess "max performance" and "460 mhz" is a textbook oxymoron.
Max performance from Nintendo = 2 FPS boost (periodically)
Can't wait to try out Bowser's fury 🙂
This game was so underrated, I honestly loved 3D World and even preferred to the exploratory 3D Mario games like Odyssey and 64.

That was developed by Grezzo
Technically it's still 60fps, if anything you should be staring at Breath of the wild but that was meant to be 30 fps.
Ah yes because the framerate made Zelda completely unplayable. Oh hang on, no it didn't!
Leave it to John to completely sell me on Bowser's Fury. I was gonna wait to purchase this one, but now I'm a lot more interested.

Can't wait for my pre order to arrive this Friday. I have been super hyped about it since the days when I was playing it on my 3DS XL.
Bowser’s Fury looks insane. Crazy how they included it when it could’ve been a full game on its own. First ever fully open world Mario too and they didn’t even promote it like that.
They included it because it's only like 5hrs long to beat, and 10hrs to 100%, sadly. If it was 3x as long, this could easily be sold on its own as a standalone title.

Foreal I wasn’t planning on picking this up because I already have it for the Wii U but now I’m going to!
Good analysis, but at what resolutions does 3D World typically run at in portable mode? You only mentioned topping out at 720p. Does it generally look jaggy as with Odyssey in portable mode?
I never felt the Wii U walk speed felt slow; you always had the option to run, and if you wanted a fast-walking character then there was Toad.
To me it seems the decision was less about running not being fast enough as much as it was about walking being near useless
I think it's an improvement - I'd rather walk by manipulating the stick personally,. Plus the max running speed is now faster. More control.

Don't worry, we've got Prime 4 to look forward to in 2025
I am definitely playing Bowser's Fury at a relaxed pace because I'm several hours in, only have nearly 30 shines, and still need the map to get around to each section of the lake.
Must I use the touchscreen when playing in handheld or will a button + gyro work?
I know. It's not a big deal for most people but I'm OCD about fingerprints on the screen.

The game also has strange resolution issues in places like World Castle in standard 3D World.
Does going into system settings and limiting the docked res to 720 eliminate the flickering caused by the upscaling?
The dark, stormy parts where King Koopa emerges are begging for HDR.
By the way, why was there no mention of the added dive move?
Funny to see a Mario that has such traditional linear design have a new side mode with the most experimental open world gameplay we've seen from the series.
So funny

Pffft the retrorgb bob when bob deinterlacing came up made me laugh 😂
I would assume some of the issues in Bowser's Fury comes from them still using the 3D World engine, which wasn't meant to be used like this originally.
Actually it seems Bowsers Fury was made from the ground up. Even movement is different in Bowsers Fury. in the main game you're stuck to 8 way directional movement but in Bowsers Fury you have the whole 360 degrees. Many other little changes seem to suggest this as well.
Just wanted to point out that RDR2 was made in an engine originally made for a Table Tennis game 🙃

Oh, look, another Photo Mode benchmark DF can use.
It's hilarious how many people got triggered by the photo mode test Digital Foundry did in their Control Ultimate Edition because they're clueless about industry standards GPU benchmarking methodology. There's no shame in not knowing how something works, the shame is in willingly remaining ignorant even though DF explain the test and the reason in the video so anyone can understand it. People that have built PC's or have basic GPU knowledge got the test and weren't surprised by the results but the ones that got offended by the results mocked the methodology fancying themselves as comedians but in reality people were laughing at them instead of with them.

@@mjc0961 yep. You’re right. The Switch has nothing to play. So boring. SMH
not my fault the console was a flop but its games weren’t
The Wii U was a gimmick that never really found a game that justified that same gimmick.
It remains ridiculous that Nintendo launched a console in 2012 that had a CPU that was, essentially, a 1997 PPC, lacking SIMD/Altivec (meaning that it was, technically, less advanced in this key area than an OG Xbox, which was fully-SIMD...and released in 2001).
It also was marketed horribly.
The idea that the Wii U was some misunderstood masterwork of hardware and software (yes, some of the software was great, despite the hardware) is more revisionist than those that pretend the GameCube was somehow a flawless market value from 2001-06.
Yeah, but is it better on PS5 Or Series X?
There's a photo mode, so must be the Series X!

I'm disappointed that you can't get 60 FPS on portable mode in Bower's Fury. If anything I would have liked to have an option for an unlocked frame rate for enjoying it on the inevitable Switch Pro/Switch 2.
