Walther Penne Oh, hello dear pretentious-person-on-the-internet... Yeah, looks like I actually think the graphics look amazing. What a crime, right? :)
Diego Davalos Of course sacrifices in visuals were made to the port, but my point is exactly how well the game runs and looks even when ported to much inferior hardware such as the 3DS. No need to be so hostile :]
As much people don't care about the 3ds, this is the most interesting point in its life. Developing for it after so many years has been mastered where there are less limitations& less resources needed which means the full potential of the system has been met
Jack Son Game Freak had a poor experience trying to make games for 3DS games to begin with, as evident with Pokémon X and Y which suffered framedrops and hardly utilised the 3D effect whatsoever. Not discrediting them but they were never using the 3DS's power efficiency, Link Between World totally blew it out the water in terms of performance in 2013.
Love how people complain about ports to Switch when ports to switch actually make a difference since most of those ports have never been portable & in HD at the same time. Let’s just forget about all the ports that PS4 & X1 got & still get.
Greg Caldwell agree but most of what people are complaining about is the price. Its the same. Whereas a xbox has them at reduced at emulation. I can understand the argument i guess but im sure that most dont even have a switch. I do feel bad for 3DS people who have to pay the same for less resolution.
I really just want 3D World now, never got to play it (don’t have a Wii U so i’m loving these ports). Maybe Mario Maker as well, but I have it on 3DS so I don’t mind if we don’t get it
Rendering on both screens isn't a huge feat. It is, for the most part, just copying a complete framebuffer into both of the screen's display buffers, (before the UI pass), The stereoscopic 3D on the other hand is by and large a hardware feature, the game just needs to supply a depth buffer for the hardware to do the rest. which is relatively trivial and actually more effort to implement in a 2D game. Not saying it's not impressive visuals for the 3DS, but I believe playing up those "feats" is a little misleading.
Well technically it is, but not for the reason that they stated. From other comment it seems to be using the right eye's view from the two views rendered for 3d.
Yeah, i have mixed feelings towards the channel, on the one hand they have an immense appreciation and decent academic grasp on graphic rendering techniques. on the other hand none of the presenters are really adept when it comes to understanding anything at the code level. At least, i have seen no evidence thereof (and often evidence to the contrary). I still find myself watching to get the nitty gritty on game's implementation of graphics techniques etc and frametime graphs, and retro-showcases. They do tend to put a lot of effort into their analysis. Hmm with a few here sharing the sentiment, might as well go on a lil diatribe :P What i recently found genuinely distressing and far more irksome than this minor overstatement, was the praise towards the Dark Souls 'Remaster', a lot of the features they were lauding, mostly came as completely free upgrades porting the codebase over to FromSofts newer engine/framework. And I suspect (for good reason) the "impressive 60 FPS optimizations" where more or less a by-product of the multi-threaded render pipeline which they inherited from the BB/DS3 codebase (which meant going from D3D9 to D3D11 on PC). One corroborating fact towards that conclusion is that if you have Gallium-nine (which makes native d3d9 calls via a state-tracker) on Linux with the LLVM scheduler and or utilize Wine's CSMT (command Stream Multi-threading, which can give D3D11 like threading to D3D9, something not readily possible on windows) on certain hardware, you get much higher and consistent 60fps with DSfix than you can with native dx9 on Windows (due solely to the render thread limitation). If it was some impressive optimization by the porting team, then the above would not be remotely possible. (I personally was getting 60fps in blight-town at 1440p on a 2010 GPU via WINE, without a 1080Ti... (To curb expectation i should state, such improvements are almost exclusive to DX9 titles with thread bottlenecks, usually you lose a bit of perf using WINE, which alone further reinforces the significance of the bottleneck in the original PC release of DarkSouls.)), Either way it was a face value conclusions based strictly on a limited dataset and it would appear a near mystified understanding of what went into the porting and generally how graphical optimizations occur Even without knowing or touching that you can confirm the effects of threading with WINE on the OG release. You can apply some basic analysis to what data is present, A) As highlighted they didn't touch blight towns geometry, it still suffers the same high levels of overdraw/drawcalls that brought prior gen to it's knees. B)zero signs they lowered sample counts on any effects (to the contrary), C) the fog culling routine was actually extended back adding additional drawcall burden, D)they didn't downsample any textures, in-fact increased some (not that that makes much of a difference on modern hardware), E)they actually added more oversampling to certain effects and have universally increased the resolution of alpha effects and added multiple new passes of post-process shader effects. They added to the burden in the area, not reduced. That's clearly not how graphical optimization works. If you use an apitrace of the frame, i guarantee the drawcalls have not gone down, if anything they've notably increased. it clearly has more to do per frame, so evidence of some seemingly amazing optimizations is very low, and to think a porting house that's ported 43 games in 8 years, while also doing QA on a hundred more, has time for such fine-grain optimisations... that seems rather crazy to me. What is confirmed is it now being based on the DS3 codebase with D3D11 which inherently comes with multi-threaded command streams.. Which can be witnessed by simply opening task manager and seeing distributed thread load, without any single thread exhibiting sustained pegging. And even api traces aren't outside of their reach, and would add a lot more data at their disposal if they hired someone with such savvy. If you did traces and discovered everything had been far more batched, instanced and optimised in some substantial (yet invisible to the naked eye) way, then sure, they'd deserve some praise. But assuming that without basis?.. I'm all for giving port developers the benefit of the doubt, but i wouldn't speculate and praise them for things without any confirmation, something most DF hosts gladly do. Don't even get me started on the praise towards praising Hardware and IHVs' "innovation", when it's within margin of error from what transferring to the new process alone would provide :P And i just spent way to long typing out 2-3 pages of whatever ^ that was lol congrats to anyone who actually reads it ;D
Honestly, the 3ds' form factor and feature set makes it a much better dedicated portable than the switch, I love the switch but it's not something I would throw into a bag or take on a commute like the 3ds.
I can see the Switch in a bag, but not in a pocket. That's the big difference between the two as far as I see. Also the 3DS has that clamshell design. Reassuring if you worry about your screen.
Looking at your video, It looks like the two 3DS screens are always showing the same thing. I could very well be they are rendering the visuals only once and then displaying the results on both screens.
I was, basically, able to confirm this in the demo. Look at the bottom screen while playing with the 3d slider. You'll notice the image shifting, confirming they are simply displaying a duplicate of one of the top screen renders onto the bottom screen.
When it comes to Captain Toad Treasure tracker, I haven’t bought it yet, so I’m currently debating whether to get the cheaper Wii U version or the portable switch version.
I enjoy it when you guys talk about more than pure tech--yes, this game does demonstrate the Nintendo Magic. I almost bought a WiiU for this. I'm very happy to see that they're porting the whole WiiU library to Switch. This is basically two Nintendo generations in one, for me
So was the WiiU if you think about it with backwards compatibility. I never had the original Wii so having a WiiU that's able to run those Wii games is great. I can see people that skiped WiiU getting the ports, though. Most of the Nintendo WiiU library consist of really solid and really enjoyable games. (Here's to getting a port of Xenoblade X. I thought it would come ot this year, but i guess with the DLC of 2 it makes sense that they wouldn't overlap)
yea there is no going back to the small screens. after i upgraded my ds lite for a dsi xl back in the day, i wondered how i could manage with the smaller screens. imagine playing a game like mgs ghost babel on a gameboy color... all that squinting will definitely take a toll on your eyesight with prolonged use... never mind the fact those older screens weren't even backlit... unbearable by today's standards.
Okay incredibly rude 1st of all. 2nd there are still a lot of people who play with the 3ds thus it makes sense for nintendo to still release games for a platform with a lot of users. 3rd this looks amazing for a machine with such limited hardware so hey jokes on you ofc its going to run on the switch but the 3ds version coming this close... wow hats of to nintendo :D
The Switch pointer is FANTASTIC addition and while I miss the ir-controls, the gyro is more practical solution in many ways and on a fast TV(with low input lag) it is not too much behind in terms of responsiveness. It drifts a bit, but still opens doors on lost genres where you need a cursor, as well as makes much FPS\TPSs miles better in my opinion.
I was actually thinking a while back that the visuals would be terrible on 3DS, but I downloaded the demo on my 2DS and was very surprised. It ran very well, and the controls are much better than the gyro controls on the Switch version in my opinion. I'm definitely going to be getting the 3DS version when it launches, as I would rather sacrifice visuals than comfortably.
One of the things I've noticed on buying a Switch, which is my first Nintendo home console since the 64, is how Nintendo games barely required patch installs. I've installed only one patch in most games, and that's about it. Hopefully more Wii U games are ported to the Switch, I would love to play Tokyo Mirage Sessions in particular.
I game on PC, PS4, Switch, and 3DS. Nintendo games are pretty much the only ones I buy Day 1 these days because I know they're the only ones reliable enough to deliver flawless experiences from the get-go.
Yep, most of the time they release games as completed products that are polished, run smoothly and ready to ship, and don't have massive install sizes. And they don't show them 3 years before they actually release, so I have a lot of appreciation and respect for how Nintendo handles their games for the most part.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions was really great, fun cheerful story, good combat, enjoyable music if you like Jpop. It may be worth finding a cheap Wii U and a copy (or download it on the eShop) if you want to play it. I find it unlikely we will see a port of it given there are new Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei games coming, and maybe even a Persona someday.
You serious? Most of Nintendos switch games have been rushed to release, why do you think they're giving you all of these "free updates"? It's not because they love you. Not saying the games are bad but this generation has an unprecedented amount of online downloads.
The game is not displaying 3D graphics on the two screens of the Nintendo 3DS at the same time! The touchscreen is only mirroring the framebuffer of the top screen (except its cropped for the 4:3 ratio). You can see it in action when you push the 3D slider up, the image is tilting slightly to the right, just like what’s happening to the image that’s displayed to your left eye
A large part of the gaming community hasn't grown out of their edgy early 2000s phase, and have this aggressive hate boner for Nintendo. It's best just to ignore them.
*Generic Username* - Yeah, after a few days when the game released there was a discount. I think it was from Best Buy you could get it less. I remember because I was disappointed that I could've saved some money if they had that deal at release day rather than after. And it was in the same week of release day too, if I'm not mistaken.
Honestly the 3DS is an Awesome Handheld! I still enjoy it to this day, and I'm actually one of the few who loves and has always loved the Stereoscopic 3D effect of the handheld.
No they don't LOL they don't have Naughty Dog, they don't have Sony Santa Monica, they don't have 4A Games, etc. They are 1 of the best dev's ever, but you can't say they are the best.
John, your pure love for video games is so refreshing and shines through each of your videos. You are critical where necessary but you’re not cynical and jaded like so many others in the industry. Great work!
There's a demo up?!? YESSSSS!!! This was one of my favorite games on the Wii U! As soon as I played my first Captain Toad level in Mario 3D World in 2013, I was hooked. I immediately looked over to my friend and said that I really hoped they would make a full game out of that mini game. I squealed with delight when they announced a full game of it for Wii U at E3 2014, and bought it shortly after it came out. Such an underrated game.
If there's any problem with the pointer in TV Mode, this can be solved by re-centering it. If I'm not wrong, the plus or minus button or pressing the right analog stick button re-centers the cursor. It might help a little.
I doubt we will see this one. Maybe XCX2 at some stage in the future? As an aside, I much preferred XC2 to XCX, the art style, the story, the combat system all greatly improved imo. There was something to be said about the sweet mechs though.
Walther Penne The switch could totally run it. It's more powerful (although not by a lot) than the Wii u. Why do you think pretty much every nintendo port runs at a higher resolution then their Wii u versions?
Walther Penne, Have you seen Digital Foundry Video? XC2 has many improvements over XCX but the reason why the frame rate (and resolution on handheld) isn't as good is because XC2 wasn't optimised properly for the Switch. If anything I can expect XCX to run 900p-1080p with improved visuals/draw distance on the Switch and 720p on handheld (and the wii u version ran at 720p)
XtraKade Gaming I don't know if this means anything but, the wii u version had a free dlc pack that improved the overall performance of the game. The downside was that it took up a lot of space on the wii u. And I mean A LOT. I have a terrabyte card so I was able to get it no problem but, my point remains. Would they still have the same thing you think?
I think that it sadly may stay the same but if it is a port from the Wii U version, I believe those patches and other with new additional system software enhancements (Like higher Res, Better Shadow Quality and Better Draw Distance) they could probably make it ever so slightly lower with hard drive space because the Switch may not need those those patches because they were there to improve the performance, if done correctly they may not use the patch because the Switch is more powerful.
John Linneman you are possibly the best game journalist at the moment. Absolutely love your videos and the way you describe version differences. Keep up the good work bud!
Hey you. Person reading the comments. Don't. You're only gonna get angry at the world. I'm doing you a favor by giving you this warning fella. My opinion, awesome to see Captain Toad on successful consoles. I hope the people that get the game enjoy it to the fullest. :)
Ok... call me crazy/stupid whatever, but I would kill for another DS or Gameboy portable only console. I love Switch and all, but gimme portable console, with clamshell design, long battery life and bunch of cool games. ...or just make portable only version of switch with better battery and d-pad instead of those weird buttons;P
No thanks. Now that Nintendo has one system, they can focus on more games for that one system, so there's no droughts like there were on Wii U and 3DS.
Maybe in a few years when the product lifecycle of Switch is over and they get to replace it with some new hardware. But in the mean time, I don't think they want to launch a new product and take the risk of cannibalising their own product. That's why they are keeping the 3DS line around. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep releasing stuff the 3DS for a few more years.
I'm sure that Nintendo will eventually release a cheaper version of the Switch with no dock. They just can't do it right now because it would kill the concept of hybrid.
I had NO idea it was hitting 3DS! And it looks great! I played it on Wii U primarily just on the controller, as you’re needing to interact with it all the time, so the 720p on handheld mode on switch also ups the resolution significantly from the screen on Wii U. But wow, I’m blown away by how flawless it looks on 3ds! It still looks great and appealing! I had no idea that was possible. It’s like what else can 3ds do? And that’s on base hardware too!
What I find really interesting is how the focus is on Mario Odyssey right now and 3D world is a game from the past, but in bringing forward Treasure Tracker, brute bringing forward 3D World’s engine and its enemies and design. This wouldn’t be surprising on its own, but the cool part is how the put this engine and these enemies onto levels from Odyssey for the port, which basically puts two different styles of 3D Mario against each other
Yey! More old games for the Switch! The bad thing is it further devalues my Wii U collection. One thing I have to give Nintendo though, their games are technically impressive and not broken at release, it's something I really miss these days and they mostly aim for 60 fps even.
Awesome. Glad to see Nintendo still putting some serious support behind the 3DS. Downloading the demo for my "New" 3DS right now :) BTW, it was actually a pretty fast download AND the 3D does look great on the New 3DS! Way to go Nintendo. Another one to add to my list!
The Wii U's Radeon GPU was rated at 350GFLOP/s, while the 3DS' graphics chip is rated at 4.9GFLOP/s (weaker than GameCube, on paper) Yet, late-life 3DS titles (and even early-life ones like 2012's Kid Icarus Uprising) are routinely outperforming the original Wii (15GFLOP/s) I love modern Nintendo platforms ♥
Simon the Wii U’s Radeon graphics chip alone handled 350GFLOPs. The key reason why the Wii U wouldn’t have been able to handle GTA 5 and why Watch Dogs was such a mess was because of the Wii U’s *CPU*; an anemic PowerPC tri-Core for the sole purpose of being 100% backwards compatible with the Wii. The Wii’s central processing unit only contribute roughly 2.5GFLOPs in addition to its 12.5GFLOPs GPU for the 15GFLOPs-rated console and the Wii U’s CPU contributes 15GFLOPs in addition to its 350GFLOPs GPU for a console rated to push 365GFLOPs. Contrast to the PS3 which had a weaker GPU (225GFLOPs) but had an ahead-of-its-time CPU, the Cell Processor, making up an astonishing 175GFLOPs of the PS3 console’s 400GFLOPs rating Showpieces like Captain Toad, DK Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, and Zelda Breath of the Wild are the only games that came close to utilizing the Wii U Radeon RV4770 to its full potential, while any framerate drops in Bayonetta 2 and Zelda BotW are a result of the ancient-architecture PowerPC CPU.
TurboPikachuX, I know that the Wii u has a terribly outdated CPU. Nintendo is always a bit behind when it comes to hardware performance... The only exception is probably the switch.
Simon This is gonna sound crazy, coming from someone who deeply appreciated the Wii U, but the Switch is the least impressed I’ve been by Nintendo hardware since the Wii/DS. Switch may be the most cutting-edge handheld of 2017/2018, and in docked mode it certainly comes close (roughly 75%-80%) to base Xbox One so Nintendo franchises look better than ever... But the handheld experience being 120% the performance of Wii U doesn’t really *wow* me the way the jump from DS to 3DS or the jump from Wii to Wii U did. The 3DS was like a pocket Wii and was more than 10x the performance of DS. The Wii U was 25x the performance of Wii and slightly leapfrogged PS3 and 360, being the very first time Nintendo franchises ever had high-definition graphics and ran at 720p/1080p resolution. It was an astonishing leap for Mario, DK, Smash Bros, etc. That’s not to say I dislike the Switch though. With Mario Odyssey, Arms, Kirby Star Allies, Mario Tennis Aces, DOOM2016, Wolfenstein II TNO, Skyrim, Dark Souls remastered, ports of the Wii U’s greatest games, and the upcoming Smash Bros Ultimate and generation-9 Pokemon games, the Switch may very well end up having Nintendo’s best library of games since the Super Nintendo, and that fact alone does make the Switch potentially Nintendo’s best platform ever
Fp16 peak performance doesnt mean anything. The wiiu is actually 176 gflops, not 350 Also youre delirous if you think switch comes close to base xbox one. Its like a fourth of the performance at 380 gflops (yep, youre thinking of fp16 AGAIN). Switch is still closer to a xbox360 than a xbox one. If you are buying nintendo consoles for graphics, you are doing it wrong. Thry will never be cutting edgr again after thr game cube
What I want to see is a port of super mario 3D world on 3DS, lol its the right amount of ridiculous for me to want. 3D world on switch i wouldn't buy it again, but on 3DS, thats kind of a different experiment
Jonathan Morales I was wondering about that myself. You can see a ZR icon pop up above individual platforms as Toad walks around, but they never acknowledged it.
Wouldn’t the addition of a second screen have less of a performance cost than you’d think because it still only hast to rasterize the image once before outputting it to two separate screens?
Man, just a few days ago I was praying that captain toad would come out for 3DS, and I never knew that it actually did! Definitely going to pick it up now and will be playing it through the summer!
the gyro is in the game it's just buried in a settings menu pause the game and hit the camera button on the touch screen to get the option to turn it on (i was on a new 3ds when i tried this though it may work on a base 3ds with the circle pad pro attachment)
Zelda WW and TP were remakes so ports. We had wind waker on 2 consoles and twilight princess even on the last 3 (gamecube, wii, wii u) so I think it doesn't make much sense
TMS isn't popular. Deservedly so. They lied about what it was (SMTxFE crossover) and it got censored so much to the point of tons of content and DLC being cut.
Tried the demo on 3Ds, the stereoscopic effet is really weak. Only the button A seems actually to be used the other buttons are only used to control camera mouvements.
This looks gorgeous! We still have a lot of great games from wii u that deserves porting on switch... xenoblade chronicles x, tokyo mirage, wonderful 101, mario 3d world, etc
Only now i realize that captain toad has appeared many more times then i have noticed in my life Back in 2014 when i was given the oppritunity to lay my hands on a Wii U, a captain toad level in 3D World was used as demo In 2018 when i got a Switch, This was the demo game (at the time this was the latest nintendo release, and marketing was god damn EVERYWHERE) that i got to play And now, 2021, Im playing the 3D world port and realizing this
This is one case where I'm glad I got it on Wii U. The new Odyssey-themed levels don't make up to the removed 3D World levels, and the truck sections feel like they're better with the GamePad. I don't care about graphics and whatnot. Both the 3DS and Switch ports are inferior.
To be frank, the 3D World levels were just slightly modified actual levels from 3D World. They weren't particularly interesting on a mechanical level, just a fun curiosity. The Odyssey levels are ground-up.
Lunar Sprite It's not just Fortnite. Sony even excluded cross-play for Rocket League and has limited the size of mods that you can download for Skyrim SE. This anti-consumer mindset that they have no intention of stopping is seriously harmful to not only their reputation but also their business.
@DigitalFoundry: Actually, even though when playing a game on the 3ds family members placed side-by-side look very identical, the smoothness of the graphical movement is different. When you play a game on a regular 3ds, 3ds xl, ect. and then play the same game on a new 3ds xl or new 2ds xl, you'll see that they are different. I used to play Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on the 3ds xl for the longest time, and then when I upgraded to a new 2ds xl, the graphics would look identical if you had a stand-still picture of it, but when you played it (as in moving the characters around and whatever), the new 2ds xl/new 3ds xl's graphics moved around a lot smoother than the previous generations.
It's all about priorities. A lot of games these days prioritise cutting edge technology, high visual fidelity, and complex simulations. Nintendo has always been about gameplay and smooth controls first and foremost. That's how they're able to consistently deliver high frame rates on Switch and even Wii U.
Why does it show the game on both screens identically? I don't think i've ever seen a ds game that shows the exact same thing on both screens. Also would it really cost more to render on both screens if it's the exact same image? Could it do the same thing VR headsets do to display the same image visible in the headset, on the monitor, at no extra performance cost?
Walther Penne The Wii U was able to run it, albeit with issues. The Switch may only be half as powerful as a base XBox One, but it's still at least 2-4 times as powerful as the Wii U, running some toned down versions of DOOM and even Skyrim. If they would port the game over, and iron out some of the bugs, it would run fine on the Switch, even in 1080p (docked mode). I hate the Switch, and even I can see it's more powerful than the Wii U.
Walther Penne The Switch is only a tablet, an overpriced, underpowered tablet. But the Wii U has 2 gigs of RAM, while the Switch has 4. The Switch runs on a mobile dedicated graphics chip which, along with enhanced processing power, blows the Wii U out of the water. Look up the specs; there's a reason why games developed for the Wii U tend to look and run better on the Switch. Zelda: Hyrule Warriors? Mario Kart 8? Boo-hoo, Ubisoft isn't bringing Assassins Creed to the Switch, I guess all the evidence and research can just be tossed out the window cos Ubisoft isn't pouring everything they have into it... Do your research, mate.
Would it be possible to get an Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana comparison now that the Switch version has been released? Would be nice to see how it stacks up against the PC, PS4, and even Vita versions.
I've seen so many comments on "Sony does what Nintendon't" and "Nintendoes what Sony doesn't". Many of them are made with no intentions to harm, but some are. Enjoyment provided by any kind of stimulus is subjective, and denying that experience from someone else is a lack of understanding of the limits of yourself. At best, you could say the taste of others is satisfied by something you find difficult to share. Bach does what Debussy doesn't, and viceversa. They don't have to, and even if they do, what principle gives the faculty to judge wich one is the better? Now, this comment aims for certain kind of statements, the ones like "the other company is worse because they don't do this specific things". No, they do other things.
Aussie Guy I mean, for owners of the Switch, these are games that they never played if they didn’t own the Wiiu.. And I’m guessing that most Switch owners haven’t owned a Wiiu by this point..
A Switch port of SM3DW would be great, but there are some questions. Some of the Wii U features were just removed entirely in this port, like the platforms you blow into the microphone to raise and lower, and there are entire levels based around those things in 3D World.
How are they useless? The Wii U was a commercial failure. They’re just letting everybody who isn’t one of the eight people who own a Wii U play its amazing library of games while improving them in the process. Ports take up almost no development time, and games are usually ported by those who _don’t_ develop new games.
I haven´t considered the 3DS version until I saw this video and I´m very glad I did see it, because now I´m gonna get the 3DS version. Thanks for this video!
donkey kong country $60, mario kart $60, hyrule warriors $60... captain toad released on the wii u $40.... lol catch my drift.. ports are being charged as new game releases..
AtomicSuperMe, if u dont see the problem with then ur a fanboy... enuff said, thank you for being part of the problem and not part of the solution kid.
The game looks so freaking beautiful on the 3DS, the art style used on both captain toad and 3D world will never age, apparently
Walther Penne Oh, hello dear pretentious-person-on-the-internet... Yeah, looks like I actually think the graphics look amazing. What a crime, right? :)
yep. you clearly dont own a switch. I own a switch and new 3ds xl. 3ds xl looks like shit compared to the switch version
Diego Davalos Of course sacrifices in visuals were made to the port, but my point is exactly how well the game runs and looks even when ported to much inferior hardware such as the 3DS. No need to be so hostile :]
The 3DS version looks AMAZING for a port of a Wii U game on inferior hardware. Not only that, It runs and plays really well.
Diego Davalos The 3ds is *way* more portable though
As much people don't care about the 3ds, this is the most interesting point in its life. Developing for it after so many years has been mastered where there are less limitations& less resources needed which means the full potential of the system has been met
Game Freak already said they can't do anything more with the hardware, and are moving to Switch.
Jack Son
Game Freak had a poor experience trying to make games for 3DS games to begin with, as evident with Pokémon X and Y which suffered framedrops and hardly utilised the 3D effect whatsoever. Not discrediting them but they were never using the 3DS's power efficiency, Link Between World totally blew it out the water in terms of performance in 2013.
X/Y was shit but S/M was a step up
WizardIF
I respect your opinion but I think X/Y were far better games, over Sun/Moon.
That's a painful opinion
3DS is a beast. Long live the 3DS.
IMpossible :)
FerrariKangaroo I bought my 13the Final game for my 3DS XL so I actually think its a fun game.
no
FerrariKangaroo its dead now with Switch Lite
The 3DS and Wii U are better that the switch in every way.
The game always was meant for the 3ds. The diorama like level design is to compliment the 3d
Yeah, it was based off of 3D World, which was based off of 3D land, which was built for the 3DS hardware....soooo you're not wrong.
tbh, the 3D effect doesn't help much though. In this game I mean
I can confirm. 3D looks amazing for this type of game, no doubt.
It is the Xbox fanboys hating
At least PS4 gets NEW games too lmao
dddddddd so does the Switch; try again troll
Greg Caldwell like what lmao
Man, at this rate we're going to see the entire first-party Wii U lineup on the Switch. I have no complaints with that.
Gameplay and Talk, I said it the day the Switch launched. They post Super Mario 3D World, and I buy a Switch the next day!
Man I really hope they port Tokyo Mirage Sessions
Welcome to Valhalla Yes! The switch needs Tokyo Mirage Sessions! I totally agree with you!
I really just want 3D World now, never got to play it (don’t have a Wii U so i’m loving these ports). Maybe Mario Maker as well, but I have it on 3DS so I don’t mind if we don’t get it
Bio21 eh. 3d world is alright but nothing to write home about.
Rendering on both screens isn't a huge feat. It is, for the most part, just copying a complete framebuffer into both of the screen's display buffers, (before the UI pass),
The stereoscopic 3D on the other hand is by and large a hardware feature, the game just needs to supply a depth buffer for the hardware to do the rest. which is relatively trivial and actually more effort to implement in a 2D game.
Not saying it's not impressive visuals for the 3DS, but I believe playing up those "feats" is a little misleading.
these people are the tech specialist for ignorant, I just closed the vid after he said that was rendering twice...
Exactly, it's mind boggling he keep saying it renders twice.
Seeing they often do in-depth analysis. Here they shouldn't make this silly mistake.
Yeah, quite uneducated for DigitalFoundry.
Hmm with a few here sharing the sentiment, might as well go on a lil diatribe :P
What i recently found genuinely distressing and far more irksome than this minor overstatement, was the praise towards the Dark Souls 'Remaster', a lot of the features they were lauding, mostly came as completely free upgrades porting the codebase over to FromSofts newer engine/framework.
(To curb expectation i should state, such improvements are almost exclusive to DX9 titles with thread bottlenecks, usually you lose a bit of perf using WINE, which alone further reinforces the significance of the bottleneck in the original PC release of DarkSouls.)),
Either way it was a face value conclusions based strictly on a limited dataset and it would appear a near mystified understanding of what went into the porting and generally how graphical optimizations occur Even without knowing or touching that you can confirm the effects of threading with WINE on the OG release. You can apply some basic analysis to what data is present,
A) As highlighted they didn't touch blight towns geometry, it still suffers the same high levels of overdraw/drawcalls that brought prior gen to it's knees.
B)zero signs they lowered sample counts on any effects (to the contrary),
C) the fog culling routine was actually extended back adding additional drawcall burden,
D)they didn't downsample any textures, in-fact increased some (not that that makes much of a difference on modern hardware),
E)they actually added more oversampling to certain effects and have universally increased the resolution of alpha effects and added multiple new passes of post-process shader effects.
Don't even get me started on the praise towards praising Hardware and IHVs' "innovation", when it's within margin of error from what transferring to the new process alone would provide :P
And i just spent way to long typing out 2-3 pages of whatever ^ that was lol congrats to anyone who actually reads it ;D
Hello! I'm from the future and yes, the 3D World is now on the Switch
Honestly, the 3ds' form factor and feature set makes it a much better dedicated portable than the switch, I love the switch but it's not something I would throw into a bag or take on a commute like the 3ds.
Ben Eklom you lost we with the bag thing. Just buy a case and keep it moving🤷🏿♂️
don't know why people don't understand this.... 3DS is just a better portable... even the XL is alittle to big
i agree it feels more casual and natural to take out the 3ds as oppose to the switch as well
I can see the Switch in a bag, but not in a pocket. That's the big difference between the two as far as I see. Also the 3DS has that clamshell design. Reassuring if you worry about your screen.
Idk it's been pretty seemless todo just that. Pop it in a case and throw it in a bag. Turns on and off instantly, been pretty fun
Either way you have a slight performance penalty by driving more pixels, but with the 3ds one more screen is only like 342 more pixels.
+1 for using the Buoy Base music from Galaxy.
When it comes to Captain Toad Treasure tracker, I haven’t bought it yet, so I’m currently debating whether to get the cheaper Wii U version or the portable switch version.
Depends on whether you plan on playing it on a big screen or on the go. I'd go with the Wii U version due to the touch controls.
I'd recommend the 3ds version since it's a portable version that holds onto the touch controls.
thebahooplamaster I'd recommend playing Atari 2600 version
I’d go with the PS4 Pro enhanced version for sure
3DS version looks the coolest
I enjoy it when you guys talk about more than pure tech--yes, this game does demonstrate the Nintendo Magic. I almost bought a WiiU for this.
I'm very happy to see that they're porting the whole WiiU library to Switch. This is basically two Nintendo generations in one, for me
Now if we could get wonderfull 101
WeeWeeJumbo they are going to port the WHOLE Wii u library to the switch??!!
When did they say they’re porting the entire library?
So was the WiiU if you think about it with backwards compatibility. I never had the original Wii so having a WiiU that's able to run those Wii games is great.
I can see people that skiped WiiU getting the ports, though. Most of the Nintendo WiiU library consist of really solid and really enjoyable games.
(Here's to getting a port of Xenoblade X. I thought it would come ot this year, but i guess with the DLC of 2 it makes sense that they wouldn't overlap)
Except Wii U has free online and virtual console
Woohoo! I love my 3DS so this makes me so happy! :-)
i love my new 2ds with luma cfw. it is the only way to fly.
same :P
As a 3dsxl user that "normal" new 3ds looks painfully small
yea there is no going back to the small screens. after i upgraded my ds lite for a dsi xl back in the day, i wondered how i could manage with the smaller screens. imagine playing a game like mgs ghost babel on a gameboy color... all that squinting will definitely take a toll on your eyesight with prolonged use... never mind the fact those older screens weren't even backlit... unbearable by today's standards.
This is why the switch should have supported the WiiU gamepad controller for games that need touch controlls.
I was actually thinking a while back that the visuals would be terrible on 3DS, but I downloaded the demo on my 2DS and was very surprised. It ran very well, and the controls are much better than the gyro controls on the Switch version in my opinion. I'm definitely going to be getting the 3DS version when it launches, as I would rather sacrifice visuals than comfortably.
aren't they just mirroring a crop of the top screen on the bottom 3DS screen?
Id imagine it still takes gpu rendering headroom though.
Aussie Guy true, but not as much as rendering twice
No.. it's full render..
And it's easy to use for navigating the touch screen command
Octavin Adi Nugroho do you have a source for that?
Gotta agree with Hammad, that sounds more efficient and do able.
Welcome to the world of Nintendo magic. : D
Everyone is so negative on here... The game is great and so the switch :)
It's decent. Wouldn't say it was great
DBZPokefreak you tried to be Mr. Nice Guy? How dare you.
DBZPokefreak that's what happens when you make a nintendo video on a xbox/ps4 channel.
A large part of the gaming community hasn't grown out of their edgy early 2000s phase, and have this aggressive hate boner for Nintendo. It's best just to ignore them.
I know right? I don't mind critical thinkers, but I hate negative nannies.
“Oh baby! That’s one beautiful grid right there!” Lol that cracked a smile :)
I'm glad i bought this on day 1 of release on Wii U for 30 bucks.
Congrats! You saved 10 bucks!
By buying the best version 5 years ago.
V3ntilator The price at launch was $40, was there a discount or something?
Pre-order deal at Cdon or Coolshop.
I sold the switch version for Wii u, I prefer 3D World levels over odyssey’s and the controls
The fact that this port exists on the 3DS and that Im currently playing and loving it is honestly mind blowing.
its such a weird but enjoyable port. Nothing really feels forced or downgraded which is impressive for a 3ds game.
Long live the 3DS !!
nintendo has the best developers, also water is wet.
EzquimaCore if nintendo got the best devs water is dry
nh k
Want to elaborate on that statement or is it just a poorly thought out joke
Mr. Soup jk
wrong! water is sticky!
Great work!
You mentioned the touch Control very much, but what about the movement Control in minecart-Levels or the blow Control for the propeller platforms?
There's a demo up?!? YESSSSS!!! This was one of my favorite games on the Wii U! As soon as I played my first Captain Toad level in Mario 3D World in 2013, I was hooked. I immediately looked over to my friend and said that I really hoped they would make a full game out of that mini game. I squealed with delight when they announced a full game of it for Wii U at E3 2014, and bought it shortly after it came out. Such an underrated game.
Oh baby, that's one beautiful grid right there!
I’d actually love to see the “New Suoer Narii + Luigi” combo come to Switch. It’s perfect material for portable play.
im actually more tempted to get the 3ds version. Still want a Super Mario 3D World port on the Switch tho
_two years later..._
*Your wish has been granted.*
So hyped for next month!
If there's any problem with the pointer in TV Mode, this can be solved by re-centering it. If I'm not wrong, the plus or minus button or pressing the right analog stick button re-centers the cursor. It might help a little.
I love these ports on Switch.
But Still no Xenoblade(Chronicles)X on Switch. That game is underrated and a switch port could really help.
XtraKade Gaming
I don't know if this means anything but, the wii u version had a free dlc pack that improved the overall performance of the game.
Thank you John for all of your effort and enthusiasm you put in to your videos.
i always have a fascination with downgrading games like this, or just the techniques used on weaker hardware, like smash 3ds
Its funny cause DF comment sections are normally way worse
Captain Toad was already on a successful console though...
(when I say successful, I don't mean sales numbers, I mean a quality system)
"Captain Toad was already on a successful console though"
Both are successful, what's your point?
This guy is very organized, well spoken and a pleasure to listen to. Great job! You just got a new Subscriber!
Ok... call me crazy/stupid whatever, but I would kill for another DS or Gameboy portable only console.
Thats redundant
Maybe in a few years when the product lifecycle of Switch is over and they get to replace it with some new hardware. But in the mean time, I don't think they want to launch a new product and take the risk of cannibalising their own product. That's why they are keeping the 3DS line around. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep releasing stuff the 3DS for a few more years.
mjc0961 agreed.
Yes we need Mario 3d world on switch with better co up mode
Dhm Dhm 3D World is the best Mario game imo.
AceTechHD I haven’t played it yet i saw some reviews and walkthrough it’s so beautiful and look fun I will love it on Switch
AceTechHD Haha nice joke.
Nathan Garcia You clearly have never played it, or you a have very poor taste in games :D
Dhm Dhm 3d world is garbage
What I find really interesting is how the focus is on Mario Odyssey right now and 3D world is a game from the past, but in bringing forward Treasure Tracker, brute bringing forward 3D World’s engine and its enemies and design. This wouldn’t be surprising on its own, but the cool part is how the put this engine and these enemies onto levels from Odyssey for the port, which basically puts two different styles of 3D Mario against each other
Nice that the 3DS still gets new games. There is no other device on the market with a 3D display.
ZiggyStardust85 cough cough ps vita(just kidding).
Ed D lol I don't even have the new 3DS XL I have the normal 3DS XL but without the circle button.
Nice video bro ! You’ve just got another subscriber ✌️
Yey! More old games for the Switch! The bad thing is it further devalues my Wii U collection. One thing I have to give Nintendo though, their games are technically impressive and not broken at release, it's something I really miss these days and they mostly aim for 60 fps even.
I’m definitely planning on getting this again on my Switch and will be getting the 3DS release for my niece for her birthday.
Awesome. Glad to see Nintendo still putting some serious support behind the 3DS. Downloading the demo for my "New" 3DS right now :) BTW, it was actually a pretty fast download AND the 3D does look great on the New 3DS! Way to go Nintendo. Another one to add to my list!
Words cannot express the amount of nostalgia I feel when I hear the buoy base galaxy music...
The Wii U's Radeon GPU was rated at 350GFLOP/s, while the 3DS' graphics chip is rated at 4.9GFLOP/s (weaker than GameCube, on paper)
Yet, late-life 3DS titles (and even early-life ones like 2012's Kid Icarus Uprising) are routinely outperforming the original Wii (15GFLOP/s)
I love modern Nintendo platforms ♥
I'm pretty sure these numbers are wrong. The Wii U sucked and was probably a lot closer to the Wii.
Contrast to the PS3 which had a weaker GPU (225GFLOPs) but had an ahead-of-its-time CPU, the Cell Processor, making up an astonishing 175GFLOPs of the PS3 console’s 400GFLOPs rating
Showpieces like Captain Toad, DK Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, and Zelda Breath of the Wild are the only games that came close to utilizing the Wii U Radeon RV4770 to its full potential, while any framerate drops in Bayonetta 2 and Zelda BotW are a result of the ancient-architecture PowerPC CPU.
TurboPikachuX, I know that the Wii u has a terribly outdated CPU. Nintendo is always a bit behind when it comes to hardware performance... The only exception is probably the switch.
Simon
This is gonna sound crazy, coming from someone who deeply appreciated the Wii U, but the Switch is the least impressed I’ve been by Nintendo hardware since the Wii/DS.
The wiiu is actually 176 gflops, not 350
Also youre delirous if you think switch comes close to base xbox one.
Your videos are a class apart guys at DF!! So much to learn and enjoy !! Keep it up!!!!!!
What I want to see is a port of super mario 3D world on 3DS, lol its the right amount of ridiculous for me to want. 3D world on switch i wouldn't buy it again, but on 3DS, thats kind of a different experiment
That frame-rate graph on the 3DS screen was beautiful :)
Wouldn't it have been more effective to assign the touch controls to a button? Like, instead of pointing, you would ZR or something?
It is. I played it that way using a pro controller. You can also use the right stick.
Claire Really? You would think DigitalFoundry would mention that, considering how in-depth they usually are.
Jonathan Morales I was wondering about that myself. You can see a ZR icon pop up above individual platforms as Toad walks around, but they never acknowledged it.
If you're saying 3ds controls are garbage you're also saying the wii u's controls are also garbage.
Wouldn’t the addition of a second screen have less of a performance cost than you’d think because it still only hast to rasterize the image once before outputting it to two separate screens?
Mario tennis aces please
IIRC, Wii Motion Plus barely used the IR sensor. In the case of Skyward Sword, it was only used to effectively set up the "forward" direction.
Gonna have to dust off my 3ds xl to play this :D
The best is playing it with Cemu + Reshade + Superdepth3D on a giant 3D projection.
*Oh baby, that's one beautiful grid right there*
Lol John is awesome 😂
Man, just a few days ago I was praying that captain toad would come out for 3DS, and I never knew that it actually did! Definitely going to pick it up now and will be playing it through the summer!
That was announced since March.
Cant wait for crash n sane trilogy analysis
Killer Tone47 i cant wait to play it
wayge same already pre downloaded
Fuck the analysis how about playing the game!
KahunaCilver520 i have a good PC and switch. Guess where i preordered crash? :D
TuNonSeiTu the switch :D
I’m so excited about this port! I own a Wii U but never got to play Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. I can’t wait to play it!
This needs DLC
Pluto Gaming They did add new levels from Oddesy at least!
It has but it doesnt have many levels
Pluto Gaming This should of been DLC for Mario 3D World
Oscar Guzman no
Infeliz Akuma yes
2:27 oh great! Bill, You're Fired!
I’m still waiting for that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess hd ports haha
the gyro is in the game it's just buried in a settings menu pause the game and hit the camera button on the touch screen to get the option to turn it on (i was on a new 3ds when i tried this though it may work on a base 3ds with the circle pad pro attachment)
They should bring the more popular games from Wii U like Zelda WW and TP and even Tokyo Mirage Sessions
The undersold games.
SuperNeonManGuy Lmao yeah
Zelda WW and TP were remakes so ports. We had wind waker on 2 consoles and twilight princess even on the last 3 (gamecube, wii, wii u) so I think it doesn't make much sense
TMS isn't popular. Deservedly so. They lied about what it was (SMTxFE crossover) and it got censored so much to the point of tons of content and DLC being cut.
I've never played. It's not a true crossover?? What happened with it?
I never did own this on 3ds but I always found it so interesting and impressive honestly
Hopefully not a port of 3D World, but a sequel to it
Yes!!!
Super Mario 3D galaxy
Brandon that would be a huge waste i rather want a port first then a sequel
Brandon maybe remastered of Super Mario Odyssey
C.D. Riley the game came out less than a year ago! you already want a remaster of it? that's very greedy.
Tried the demo on 3Ds, the stereoscopic effet is really weak. Only the button A seems actually to be used the other buttons are only used to control camera mouvements.
Now if only they would port games like Wind Waker HD, Mario 3D World, and maybe even some Wii games like Metroid Prime Trilogy.
Young Werther Nah
RG Prosucctions yes*
Let´s not forget the Mario Galaxy games and Super Mario RPG then.
We need more Wii ports.
colin3ds it would be with a new controls scheme. I deeply disliked the wii controls.
This looks gorgeous! We still have a lot of great games from wii u that deserves porting on switch... xenoblade chronicles x, tokyo mirage, wonderful 101, mario 3d world, etc
I'd pay 20 bucks for this.
Only now i realize that captain toad has appeared many more times then i have noticed in my life
Back in 2014 when i was given the oppritunity to lay my hands on a Wii U, a captain toad level in 3D World was used as demo
In 2018 when i got a Switch, This was the demo game (at the time this was the latest nintendo release, and marketing was god damn EVERYWHERE) that i got to play
And now, 2021, Im playing the 3D world port and realizing this
This is one case where I'm glad I got it on Wii U. The new Odyssey-themed levels don't make up to the removed 3D World levels, and the truck sections feel like they're better with the GamePad.
I don't care about graphics and whatnot. Both the 3DS and Switch ports are inferior.
What differs between wii u gamepad and switch handheld in this game?
*+Skvall* Stylus.
Walther Penne ok didn't know either was needed since it isn't in the demo levels.
To be frank, the 3D World levels were just slightly modified actual levels from 3D World. They weren't particularly interesting on a mechanical level, just a fun curiosity. The Odyssey levels are ground-up.
please ignore everything TiocStudios says, he's a troll desperate for attention
What? You were expecting a rebuttal?
11:40 Watching this in 2021 felt great! Not only we got 3D Worlds but also Bowser's Fury
I don,t get Nintendo, why not port Super Mario 3D World instead of Captain Toad
you don't get them because your'e not good at business hence why the have lasted over 100 years
It won't really make sense considering that Super Mario Odyssey is already on the Switch...
If that’s the case, then it would be a virtual console instead lmao. Considering that the Switch already has Odyssey.
You all sound like fanboys to me, Nintendo has already released Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Bayonetta, & Zelda.
All Wii U games.
Ikr! But it would also be cool if they still added 3d world so we could have both
Can’t wait too play this game again, and 3D world on the Switch would be AWESOME!
Nintendoes what sony dont and that's crossplay!
Devil Driver92 isn’t that big of a deal,
Lunar Sprite it might to be people who spent time and money on their Epic account only to find it hijacked by Sony.
Lunar Sprite
It's not just Fortnite. Sony even excluded cross-play for Rocket League and has limited the size of mods that you can download for Skyrim SE. This anti-consumer mindset that they have no intention of stopping is seriously harmful to not only their reputation but also their business.
Lunar Sprite it actually is
Oldskool Lew make another one it’s free anyways
That moment when most of nintendo's games run at 60fps and most of Sony's don't
well the games on ps4 are also way more graphically intensive, so its quite obvious why they run at lower framerates.
The Boss Stage1 You mean most exclusives Nintendo games that could run probably at 120fps on potato PC
Yeah that 60 fps Xenoblade chronicles 2 was really impressive, as were Breath of The Wild and Kirby. Nothing but solid 60 fps games from Nintendo.
It's all about priorities. A lot of games these days prioritise cutting edge technology, high visual fidelity, and complex simulations. Nintendo has always been about gameplay and smooth controls first and foremost. That's how they're able to consistently deliver high frame rates on Switch and even Wii U.
Truth no
Why does it show the game on both screens identically? I don't think i've ever seen a ds game that shows the exact same thing on both screens.
Also would it really cost more to render on both screens if it's the exact same image? Could it do the same thing VR headsets do to display the same image visible in the headset, on the monitor, at no extra performance cost?
Still waiting for Devils Third.
I honestly liked that game a bit, it certainly had it's problems, but it was so ridiculous.
yodagamer1 Same. It deserves more polish and a real chance, on the Switch or otherwise.
Walther Penne um the switch is more powerful than Wii u
Seriously DF, you guys really need to disable comments on your videos.
No they don't mate
Why
Nintendo does what Sony don’t. And that’s porting captain toad treasure tracker to their new console
True, if this was a Sony title it would have supported cross-play.
Thanks guys!!
So many uneducated fanboys saying this game is 60$...
You're the second person I've seen complaining about others claiming a $60 price tag.
So far I have found 0 people actually saying the game is $60.
mjc0961 well before there were many comments there were a lot of people saying 60
It's almost like it's a fake contention to distract you from the real issues...
I'd love to see a technical comparison of Ys VIII on multiple platforms. You guys are the go-to for quality in technical analysis. Cheers!
Nintendo re releasing games to charge us again.......who would've known?
Aussie Guy you do realize that no one is forcing you buy it right? This was one game that the fans are asking to be ported in the first place.
Yep aware of that. Just stating that as a gamer this gen has been over-saturated with ports/hd remasters etc. Some new ips would be great.
Aussie Guy
I mean, for owners of the Switch, these are games that they never played if they didn’t own the Wiiu..
And I’m guessing that most Switch owners haven’t owned a Wiiu by this point..
Aussie Guy
Ports won't last forever, especially Wii U ones.
Aussie Guy Ports make sense, especially for how poorly the Wii U sold. A lot of Switch owners haven't played titles on the system.
A Switch port of SM3DW would be great, but there are some questions. Some of the Wii U features were just removed entirely in this port, like the platforms you blow into the microphone to raise and lower, and there are entire levels based around those things in 3D World.
Please Nintendo, we need more useless Wii U Ports
There's still a few games that I wouldn't mind on Switch, and I'm sure everyone that skipped the Wii U wouldn't mind some "new" Nintendo games either
Yes cause Xbox or ps4 had useless ports as well
is mario maker on the switch yet?
How are they useless? The Wii U was a commercial failure. They’re just letting everybody who isn’t one of the eight people who own a Wii U play its amazing library of games while improving them in the process.
Ports take up almost no development time, and games are usually ported by those who _don’t_ develop new games.

I haven´t considered the 3DS version until I saw this video and I´m very glad I did see it, because now I´m gonna get the 3DS version. Thanks for this video!
no wonder the switch is a PORTable console.... it was designed for PORTS at full price.
It's $40 USD
Dan K Memes it should be 20$, no more.
donkey kong country $60, mario kart $60, hyrule warriors $60... captain toad released on the wii u $40.... lol catch my drift.. ports are being charged as new game releases..
Full Jacket so it releases at the same price, so what?
AtomicSuperMe, if u dont see the problem with then ur a fanboy... enuff said, thank you for being part of the problem and not part of the solution kid.
One thing i dont understand, why i see the same thing on the two screen? Why not simply put a menu command on the bottom?
Hi DF crew !
could you guys please do a video on 3DS IPS / TN panels ?
I think it's an interesting niche most people don't know about or even realize
I think it's too late for that.
Check out Erica Griffin's videos on the 3ds Screens.
Does the 3ds actually render it twice, or does it just show the same image on both screens?
