Its true. Though Im more partial to the older albums as I listened to them during more impressionable period (college), The entire album Aja is a real masterpiece. "Smoother" than the older stuff, more like smooth jazz. But undeniably a masterpiece.
The lyrics were "Go to Lost Wages" which is a term for Las Vegas. Also, Rick Derringer played the guitar on this single. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter played guitar on a lot of their future albums
YOU GO TO LOST WAGES, LOST WAGES, YOU GO TO LOST WAGES... (a euphemism for Las Vegas). That's Rick Derringer on slide guitar, as a guest performer. Catch Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits) on the guitar solo in Steely Dan's TIME OUT OF MIND, from the album Gaucho (1980).
They got the shapely bodies (Go to Lost Wages, Lost Wages) They got the Steely Dan T-shirt (You go to Lost Wages) And for the Coup de grâce (Go to Lost Wages, Lost Wages) They're outrageous (You go to Lost Wages) Oh, honey let me tell you
"Show Biz Kids" was from their Countdown To Ecstasy" album. At that point they still had a touring band but that would not last much longer. They had been bringing in other musicians, and this time they had Rick Derringer playing that slide guitar. Derringer was a regular with Johnny Winter's and with Edgar Winter's bands...before that he had been a member of The McCoys which had that hit single "Hang On Sloopy" in the mid 60s. The regular road band had Skunk Baxter and Denny Dias as the guitarists, both great lead men. They brought in Elliot Randall to solo on "Reelin' In The Years." Around the time of Pretzel Logic, Donald and Walter decided to stop touring and just make albums. Baxter and Dias then left because they wanted to play out. Since then Donald and Walter have brought in guys like Larry Carlton (Don't Take Me Alive) Jay Graydon (Peg) Steve Khan, Hugh McCracken, Dean Parks. Walter Becker played a number of leads as well. Since they reformed Steely Dan in the early 90s the longest tenured member of the band on lead guitar has been Jon Herrington. Man that guy is awesome.
Ooh, I can't believe I missed this!!! THANK YOU! This was the set closer for their "Pretzel Logic" tour, after which Donald Fagen decided he didn't really like touring and the band stopped doing it for quite a while. So this was ALMOST the last song people heard live from Steely Dan… …ALMOST, because they also would play an encore; just one song, that was never officially released. "This All Too Mobile Home" has many recordings on UA-cam and on unofficial concert CDs, but I don't know if you want to track it down. It is *damn* worth it, though. If you're more conventionally-inclined, try "King of the World". Damn, Rick Derringer is really working that guitar here, isn't he? And yes, "Lost Wages" is a joke nickname for "Las Vegas", and that's what the backing singers are singing.
One of my favorites...oh, what am I saying, ANY Steely Dan is my favorite!!! They're just THAT EXCELLENT!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ THEY'RE UP THERE WITH FLOYD AND SUPERTRAMP!!
My FAVORITE Steely Dan track....perfect backup vocals! No rhythm guitar! - the entire song is a guitar solo! Having lived in Hollywood for 30 years, the lyrics really hits home. " Show business kids making movies of themselves you know they don't give a F^%% about anybody else."PERFECT.
God, this takes me back!! I first heard Steely Dan FIFTY (50!) years ago and was instantly obsessed~ it kinda blows my mind that they sound just as fresh now!! Thank you guys for the blast from the past~ I really love you two, and so happy you dive into the 70's, 80's, 90's and love what you hear ❤
A fun thing I've noticed about the raucous, chaotic ending of this song is that it's a crossover/homage to the music of War which was also a top band at the time. The random vocal callouts are similar to those heard (in Spanish) in War's big hit "The Cisco Kid" which had been released just eight months earlier. And Becker's closing harmonica riffs are a dead ringer for Lee Oskar's riffs in that and other War songs; in fact if the credits didn't say otherwise I would have sworn that was Oskar himself playing on "Show Business Kids".
After I cleaned my car yesterday, Steely Dan was on the car radio with "FM". I thought: what a treat after all my hard work! But just as I turned up the volume, my dad called me and I couldn't listen any further. But this reaction compensates! Thanks Rob Squad!
Rick Derringer is the guest guitarist on this song, but he was never a member of their band. Btw, this is my favorite Steely Dan album, which is called Countdown to Ecstasy. "My Old School" is also on this album. Every song on this album is among SD's best, especially "Your Gold Teeth" and "King of the World" but really all of them.
Various excellent guitarists have been featured on Steely Dan albums. That was Rick Derringer of Edgar Winters "Frankenstein"fame. Also Jeff "Skunk"Baxter and Larry Carlton have shredded for the Dan
I like ‘Supertramp’ but I don’t think you can compare their legacy to that of Steely Dan. Steely Dan’s catalog is so much more vast and groundbreaking.
Whoever recommended this song to ya'll KNOWS THEIR STEELY DAN - this is one of the all-time great "deep cuts" of this amazing band....virtually everyone of their albums has hidden gems like this song...back in the day, once the album was on the turntable, no one was getting up to stop the music...you just naturally learned the depth of a band's talent, lyricism, composition, etc. thru having to listen to that LP - just different now when you can cherry-pick one good song from a greatest hits put together by apple or android or whoever...thanks for whoever made the recommendation and ya'lls outstanding reaction..."Haitian Divorce" off "The Royal Scam" is another hidden gem (IMHO)
Jay! Amber! Another great reaction to another awesome Steely Dan song. So, they had a number of different guitarists throughout their career. Originally, on their first two albums, they were more of a regular touring band. And Jeff “Skunk” Baxter was their lead guitar player. And he played a lot of their leads. But not all! They often had guests who sat in, and did some of their most iconic guitar solos and leads. And Walter Becker, who was co-writing partner with Donald Fagen (who sings lead on almost every song they ever did), doubled on bass and guitar. On this song, this was guitar legend Rick Derringer, who played with both Edgar and Johnny Winters among other important moments in rock and roll history. Walter and Donald basically fired the band after the third album from then on, Steely Dan was a studio only band, with whomever Walter & Donald hired to be on their masterpiece albums, such as AJA, GAUCHO, ROYAL SCAM and KATY LIED. And if you really gotta give the people what they want and that’s not just a slogan, please give us “Aja” and “Deacon Blues” (for starters). Both of these are off of what many consider their greatest album, AJA. And then there’s more places you can go on some of the albums you have already tasted. But give the people what they want: “Aja” and “Deacon Blues”. You will thank all of us who have been asking for these for years.
They used a lot of different guitar players over the years - Denny Dias, Elliott Randall, Jeff (Skunk) Baxter, Rick Derringer, Larry Carlton. Donald and Walter weren’t afraid to try different guitarists to achieve whatever sound they wanted for that particular song. All did great work with them. Who am I forgetting?
Guitar players in the early years were Denny Diaz, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, and Walter Becker, who was one of the two main guys in Dan, along with Donald Fagan, keyboard and lead vocals. Eventually, with 1977's Aja, Dan was Fagan and Becker and an array of studio musicians.
0:27 guys look at the Hollies 1969 He ain't heavy he's my brother. It is about kids in an orphanage in 1918/1920 The one boy had complex braces on his legs and Reuben Granger one of the older boys would carry Howard up the stairs. Father Flanagan asked Rueben if Howard was heavy and his reply was he ain't heavy Father, he's my brother.
Steely Dan had a way of taking the seamier side of life and turning it into amazing songs. I find their lyrics fascinating as well as cryptic. They make you LISTEN and THINK. I have every CD they've put out as well as a couple of Donald Fagen's solo releases. Can't miss with these guys. Great stuff.
This is from their best album, "Countdown to Ecstasy" (close with "Can't Buy a Thrill") and shows Steely Dan when they were tougher and grittier, and actually still a band.
YES! One of my favs, a few more to try - "Chain Lightning", "Daddy Don't Live in that NYC No More" and from. Donald Fagen (solo), "Walk Between the Raindrops". Different vibes but all great!
Steely Dan used a variety of fantastic studio guitarists (and other musicians). Larry Carlton, Skunk Baxter (Doobie Brothers), Jay Graydon, Rick Derringer, Walter Becker himself, so many more! So there is no *one* guitarist. They’d ask 10-20 guitarists to play the same song and then they’d pick their favorite and it differed from song to song. Larry Carlton is my favorite :)
Feels like there’s a new appreciation for Steely Dan , maybe because looking back over 50 years their music stands out by being especially unique and creative. Plus I don’t remember it being very cool back then to like them.
50 years ago was a totally different time for music, Steely Dan were among so many wonderful bands, their music wouldn't have been appreciated as it is today.
Speaking of eclectic, Haley Reinhardt is as versatile as they come. No pyrotechnics, no outrageous costumes, no fancy choreography or backup dancers. Just vocal talent with great musicians behind her. She rocks out with “What is and What Never Should Be” Wild Horses for a gentler rock with Slash on 12 string acoustic guitar She covers Adele and Norah and reactors say she sounds like one or the other even when she is not stone of their songs. Aretha’s chain of fools. Several of her original songs are soulful and bluesy. When she goes torch singer on rat pack era style performances she really shines. She puts a bossa nova twist on Taylor Swift’s lover and it becomes a perfect jazz club performance (with a great sax solo from the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra along with the rest of the instrumental break) I could go on I am obsessed with Haley’s performances and you will be too once you hear her.
I love that you guys love Steely Dan. One of my favorite bands ever, for real. And Im such a music lover & know/love so much music. I checked, you havent done Kid Charlemagne yet! Or Bodhitsava! Also Hatian Divorce! 😊
Steely Dan was Donald Fagan & Walter Becker. All the other instruments were either studio musicians or other well known players. SD was very particular and would occasionally record some well known musicians only to not use the recording and have another musician rerecord it.
I always thought it was "you owed a life's wages"! One of my favourite Steely Dan tracks is Everyone's Gone To The Movies. It sounds so innocuous but there's a sinister overtone in the music & lyrics, well worth a listen.
They always beeped out the F word on AM & FM radio stations when they played this song it was a huge NO NO back when this song came out. Love them so much, you need to dig deeper into there catalog.
You'd love My Old School and Your Gold Teeth from this album. The first of these tracks features some of the best horn charts on any track I can think of in the last 50 years - with the possible exception of Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke.
Iam 66 and the Music back then was Awesome! We Listened to and Brought all of their Albums, Robin Trower, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones Buddy Miles , Gorge Duke, Grand Funk Railroad, JoJo Gunn , Rare Earth , James Brown, etc there so many great Bands back then! Rap is not Music, and as far as iam Concerned that S Over Shadowed, Great Groups, Funded by the Greedy Rich Mofos!
I was born in 1964 and will be 60 next month, which qualifies me as an OG Steely Dan fan. I saw them the last time they were in Sydney. I was looking through your reviews and wondered how you would react to The Fez, my favourite. My top five are The Fez, King of the World, Josie (which you have done), Your Gold Teeth, and Time Out of Mind (Countdown to Ecstasy was my first SD album, hence the bias).
LOL is that for real or are you just guessing (the taxi part)? I’ve had this album since it came out so I’ve heard this song hundreds if not thousands of times in 50 years and never knew that! That is pretty cool if so!
Daddy's a producer/director, and they live in the Hollywood Hills. Perhaps they're child actors. I went to school with them in the San Fernando Valley and they did party and they did have Steely Dan T shirts. And I still do too.
You guys really like Steely Dan and so do I. You guys commented about the guitarist...who is this person? The fact of the matter is Steely Dan used a virtual who's who of studio musicians. The sound from the guitarists is always different because they hired all these different guys for different songs. Here is a partial list of guitarists: Larry Carlton, Jeff Skunk Baxter,Denny Dias, Jay Graydon, Dean Parks, Elliot Randall, and many more. Steely Dan started as an actual group but boiled down to Donald Fagen and Walter Becker...and then whoever they would hire for studio work. They became basically a studio "band". So any way maybe try Black Cow next from Steely Dan....a lot of horns and tasteful keyboard and great vocals. I had to look it up but a "black cow " is New York slang for a root beer float...root beer and ice cream. If you do Chicago again could you try Dialogue 1&2 studio version. It has everything you guys like. 😊
The first time I heard the term "lost wages" used for "Las Vegas" was an early 60s Lenny Bruce routine. I don't know if he coined the term, but he used it very effectively. I always assumed Steely Dan was inspired by him -- seems like a natural fit for Donald Fagen's worldview.
One of my faves from them...the thing that makes this one so amazing is that there is only ONE chord in the whole song, and everything revolves around it. Can't go wrong with any Steely Dan tunes though!
Oh hoooo!! So happy when this popped up today! It's been quite awhile since I requested this one of you but I must not have been the only one. It is my favorite SD tune. The lyrics are a big fat zinging middle finger to the "haves. The "el supremo" he detected from a room at the top of the stairs was the smell of pot, if I remember correctly. So much to unravel in their lyrics. I thought of this song when Ricky Gervais gave his scathing monologue while hosting the Golden Globes a couple of yrs back. BTW, the fabulous Rick Derringer ("Rock 'n Roll Hoochie Koo") was on guitar. Excellent choice ❤❤ Be blessed.
"Show-business kids making movies of themselves, ya know they don't give a F*** about anybody else". Still rings true, don't it? Who on earth uses backing vocals better? This was my first encounter with the substitution of "Lost Wages" for Las Vegas. It makes immediate sense of course. Love Rick Derringer's slide on this one too. Not one of their usual stable of jazz-rock aces, but perfect for the part. Can't go wrong with the Dan, man. ✌🏼😉🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
Amber, you mentioned Steve Miller. Would love to see you guys react to Steve Miller & Peter Frampton live playing Stranger Blues. Two legendary guitarists going at it. Frampton in particular shows off his incredible chops!!
Also, your observation that "the golden life is dangerous" is a topic that shows up on other SD songs as well; like one line in another SD tune says, "Living hard will take its toll..."
You can't go wrong with Steely Dan. You have done a lot from them but I keep begging you to listen to "Aja." It's a masterpiece.
royal scam is just as good, and they used MANY guitarists.
Agree 100%. Aja is a must.
Its true. Though Im more partial to the older albums as I listened to them during more impressionable period (college), The entire album Aja is a real masterpiece. "Smoother" than the older stuff, more like smooth jazz. But undeniably a masterpiece.
PLEASE! More Aja!
"They got the Steely Dan t-shirts" is the perfect line to be in a Steely Dan song.
It’s badass.
@@jpmnewyork I had a Steely Dan t shirt that said “This is a Steely Dan t-shirt.”
Followed by a quick ‘reeling in the years’ riff

Rick Derringer GOING OFF on guitar
one of the Three Slide songs on Mt Olympus...Layla,...La Grange..and this....Rick Derringer runs amock...incredible..
"They go to Lost Wages "🎶
I had a couple of Steely Dan cassettes and though they were saying life's wages. But being slang for Vegas it makes more sense.
Not enough can be said about Steely Dan. The musicians they bring in. Always superb. Jazz, blues, rock. There is NO bad Steely Dan.
Steely Dan- Black Cow
One of my favorite Steely Dan songs.
Mine too.
They got the shapely bodies (Go to Lost Wages, Lost Wages)
They got the Steely Dan T-shirt (You go to Lost Wages)
And for the Coup de grâce (Go to Lost Wages, Lost Wages)
They're outrageous (You go to Lost Wages)

Steely Dan: ANYTIME!!! :) LOVE IT!!
You can literally choose anything from Steely Dan’s catalogue and it will be exquisite! No bad songs! Keep em coming! 🌸💐✌️
Jay & Amber, you'll absolutely LOVE their "Aja", "Deacon Blues" and "FM" !!!!!
They did FM just recently. They haven't done your other two choices yet, though.
We've been waiting far too long for Deacon Blues!
No they won't
@bojangles713 I'd say you're sadly mistaken. You see, yes they will.

Yup, Lost Wages is a humorous word-play on Las Vegas.
They mostly used studio musicians. That is how they were able to use so many instruments and produce so many sounds.
Surprisingly, they were awesome live!! So I don't know how they pulled that off~ they sounded just like they did on "studio" tracks.
Like other truly great bands, Steely Dan created their own unique musical universe that once you enter, you never want to leave.

You'd love My Old School and Your Gold Teeth from this album. The first of these tracks features some of the best horn charts on any track I can think of in the last 50 years - with the possible exception of Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke.
Thanks for more Steely Dan!! Such an amazing selection!! You can’t go wrong with them!!!
Iam 66 and the Music back then was Awesome! We Listened to and Brought all of their Albums, Robin Trower, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones
Buddy Miles , Gorge Duke, Grand Funk Railroad, JoJo Gunn , Rare Earth , James Brown, etc there so many great Bands back then!
"Go to Lost Wages" Jay was so close with his guess. 😁

The DAN!!
Just for fun go look up this song on the midnight special. Different back up singers and Jeff Baxter on slide guitar. But definitely a very fun watch.
You guys need to hear Steely Dan “Bodhisatva” (spell check lol)
Yes. Definitely
If you go to Las Vegas you could end up with “Lost Wages”.
✌🏼😎🇺🇸
7:00 Harmonica sounds like a car honking, 7:13 Lady calls out for a taxi but sings it. Taaaxi. One of my top 3 favorite bands of all time.
LOL is that for real or are you just guessing (the taxi part)? I’ve had this album since it came out so I’ve heard this song hundreds if not thousands of times in 50 years and never knew that! That is pretty cool if so!
@@midnightrambler7716 Yes, it’s true. The time stamps I put, are matched to this video play back Rob Squads video, you’ll hear it and never unhear it.
Daddy's a producer/director, and they live in the Hollywood Hills. Perhaps they're child actors.
I went to school with them in the San Fernando Valley and they did party and they did have Steely Dan T shirts. And I still do too.
I think it's time for you to finally get to Deacon Blues by Steely Dan, next!
Black Cow is a must listen 🎶
To me Steely Dan has always been jazz+rock
Amber, you mentioned Steve Miller. Would love to see you guys react to Steve Miller & Peter Frampton live playing Stranger Blues. Two legendary guitarists going at it. Frampton in particular shows off his incredible chops!!
One of the ultra-funkiest, jazzy SD tunes you have yet to hit is "Green Earrings" from The Royal Scam. Be sure to give that one a spin sometime.
Also, your observation that "the golden life is dangerous" is a topic that shows up on other SD songs as well; like one line in another SD tune says, "Living hard will take its toll..."
I got my Steely Dan Tshirt. 😂
