Despite Walter passing away, they toured this past summer. They were fantabulous and paid tribute to Walter. Rest In Peace. Thank you for your gift of music
SD are the ever lovin' best! Hard to beat 'em! Been in love with them for 50 years! Great reaction. Thanks for watching! So many good songs and entire albums!
This is not about high school. It's about Bard college (the William and Mary of the north). There was a drug raid. The college kids were set up, but Bard bailed out the students. However, they left Fagan's girlfriend in jail since she wasn't a student (she's the one who gives half of a 69 goodbye). The whistle refers to the whistle for the grads to come for commencement, but Fagan won't go. He wants to take his girlfriend to Guadalajara, so she won't be prosecuted.
Goddamn that sounds true or at least truer. For someone who wasn't there and a fan. Well u can imagine the interest song didn't tell the who what why when and how. ??? Tell me.
I’ve been a Steely Dan fan since the very first time I heard them in the mid 70’s. Such a great mix of genres with this band. Rock, jazz, blues, folk, progressive, even classical. These guys could do it all. Walter and Donald certainly knew how to put together the finest collection of top notch musicians, and were so meticulous about the arrangement and sound quality of each track, that they just couldn’t miss. Fantastic band, and obviously my all time favorite. ♥️✌🏼😎
Yes, and Chevy Chase was their drummer up there when they were in a band together called The Leather Canary...The song is about a drug bust up there after being ratted out by a female friend of theirs to Local Prosecutor G. Gordon Liddy (Daddy Gee) prior to his infamous Watergate days.
Steely Dan is such a unique band. They always have such precise execution of instruments and vocals on all their songs. This one is a personal favorite of mine, so thank you for giving it a spin!
Such a great band. Always had songs on the radio growing up, but when I bought the albums I was blown away. Don't Take me Alive-is an under the radar classic. Luckily I was able to see them in concert in 2011 or 12, years before Walter passed...
Can you imagine how much sheer music theory you have to know in order to write the music for "My Old School"? And then to play it? That electric guitar from Jeff Baxter is virtuoso playing! One of my favourite Steely Dan songs! Fagen and Becker had a great sense of humour! 🎸🤣👌🎸
Nearly every Steely Dan song is among my favorite Steely Dan tunes. But there are a few that are above all others. This is one of them. "My Old School" tells a great story of Fagen and Becker's past in college while incorporating nearly every instrument in the studio. The great funky guitar solo was courtesy of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who went on to be an integral part of the Doobie Brothers and a noted Defense Department consultant on missile defense systems. If you want to hear another great guitar rockers by The Dan, try "Don't Take Me Alive" and "Kid Charlemagne," both off of the "Royal Scam" album featuring Larry Carlton on lead guitar.
Steely Dan was amazing. Genius. Loved that band as an early teen, I grew up on their music back when they got huge. The 70's had some great bands and they were one of the best. They were a part of surviving junior high school and early high school, ironically.
I remember reading years ago in an interview of these guys, when asked why don't you put your pictures on the album covers and I don't remember who said it but his response was " because we're too ugly ". Lol
The "Old School" referred to in this song is Bard College in Annendale, New York, where Donald Fagen and Walter Becker met. The song is at least partially inspired by an event that occurred at Bard, where both Becker and Fagen, along with their girlfriends, were arrested in a pot raid on a party that was orchestrated by an ambitious young District Attorney named G. Gordon Liddy. Yes same guy that was one of the men arrested in watergate buglaries.
Although great, whole heartedly agree. But that’s your opinion. The Allman Brothers, Aerosmith, Metallica, GNR, CCR. May not be your cup of tea. But you can’t deny their overall success.
Its amazing that the music is suddenly back again off the band Steely Dan!Imagine, the music i heard back in the seventies is back again. And yes i still listen to it,even in my 75th age !
No One could play a lead riff better than Walter Becker.... and No One ever will... An undisputed master. What a loss. God Bless Steely Dan... They got me through My Old School in the 1970s with class, style and happy memories.
Asia & BJ, you'll love their "Deacon Blues", "Josie", “Bodhisattva” and many more!!!! Steely Dan- Donald Fagen(vocals, keys), Walter Becker(guitar) and the best session musicians money can buy!
It says a lot about them that the same guys who created Bodhisattva also created Deacon Blues. Only a fan can imagine that those two songs were created by the same band. They're that different, but both amazing in their own way. Sort of as different as the Beatles I Want to Hold Your Hand and A Day in the Life. Only musical geniuses can pull that kind of thing off.
They always strove for the best, and generally achieved it. Creative, genre bending, great lyrics, excellent musicianship - you can’t do better than the Dan. Thanks for this one!
Happy New Year, Asia and BJ !!! I'm a little behind but am glad to catch you in the New Year with Steely Dan. This song is one of favorites. But here is are a few suggestion to keep things groovy baby as BJ says. Steely Dan - TIME OUT OF MIND. It has backing vocals from Michael McDonald, who was a member of the group at one time. The song is strict, tight, and just jazzy enough for chair dancers like Asia. Next up, Alicia Bridges - I LOVE THE NIGHTLIFE. A one-time hit from the disco era that is sassy and burns slow. And finally, Rufus featuring, Chaka Khan. The album cut of YOU GOT THE LOVE or the Soul Train video are best. The funk is as full and thick as Miss Khan's hips. And her vocals are on point. I keep missing you in the live chats but I'll get there. I'm out. And enjoy
Yes yes yes! My fave Steely Dan song. They did this as an encore when I saw them in 1993. A perfect concert! Best sound production for a show I ever heard, and I was a music critic at the time, seeing shows every week.
SD albums were always beautifully produced. Listening to their albums on a system with an amp that had balls and punchy speakers you heard sounds you never heard from other bands. So clean!!
Have loved Steely Dan since the early 70s. This song from their second album (the "video uploader" still has their first album cover thumbnailed) is a classic among classics. The best period of a great group.
I lived down the street from my old school. It was hard to stay away. Eventually we moved away. When I saw it again it was unrecognizable! But yeah, you can't go back.
Awesome!! My favorite Steely Dan tune! Best story tellers! You need to keep going this rabbit hole! Try Deacon Blues if you have not done it yet!If you want another throw back band, one with a horn section, then you need to react to the tunes This Time it’s For Real, Love on The Wrong Side of Town, and Talk To Me by Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes. This is a band that Bruce Springsteen looked up to and took some of their style when he first try to break through!
Asia, that's because when your mamma and I were kids, teachers used Yard Sticks and those big old line rulers chawk board brushes or what ever was at hand.
Y’all are late to the party, but it’s good to see you catching up. These guys are sooooo far beyond what would be considered “high instrumental mastery” today. And if you listen closely you can hear Michael McDonald vocals when he was a part of the group. But Donald Fagan is a master musician. This stuff is timeless.
I knew you'd dig this one - check out the backstory on the incident that inspired these lyrics. Love just about everything they did since they first hit the radio - but listen to TIME OUT OF MIND and HEY NINETEEN from the Gaucho album, FM(no static at all), and AJA(pronounced like Asia). Cool, Hip, and Tight.
My number one favorite song of all time by my number one favorite band of all time- thank you very much for this review/reaction- and I am never going back to my old school ever under any circumstances whatsoever- this song was an anthem for me during the 70's- when I first heard this song I was getting kicked out of high school in Seattle- then getting kicked out of the entire Seattle Public School District- we're talkin Nathan Hale 1976- too much to try to text- but, trust me- it was wild....next song/reaction by Steely Dan- my number two favorite song of all time "Deacon Blues"- phenomenal song- off of an equally phenomenal album "Aja"(probably my favorite album of all time)......Wayne Maher - Seattle, Wa.....
As many SD songs are, this is full of cryptic self-references, too-clever-for-your-own-arse sarcasm and overall great storytelling, albeit oblique. The tune itself is glorious. Have a good'un!
The opening line: I remember the 35 sweet goodbyes When you put me on the Wolverine up to Annandale “The Wolverine” was the train students took when they went back to college. “35 sweet goodbyes”: 1960s slang for oral sex (35 is half of 69) lol
Awesome I'm now going to have to do a search I was just looking through your playlist and didn't see a steely Dan one set up This is great I'm looking forward to this one
What a pleasant surprise. Steely Dan has been my favorite band for almost forty years. There's actually a little history or SD trivia with this song and they usually close with it when playing live....I just can't remember all the details to it right this second and don't want to speculate lol. It was nice to see Asia get into the song early and then spoke of it having a vibe. If you like this song check out: Do It Again, Babylon Sisters, Kid Charlemagne, Bodhisattva. These guys stopped touring in 1975 and were all about the music. Their next three (or 4 depending who you ask) albums, Katy Lied, The Royal Scam and especially Aja, as far as real, true musicianship are as good as it gets - the fourth album I mentioned, Gaucho, was kinda split with awesomeness and then maybe not so much. They knew they (Walter Becker and Donald Fagen) were parting ways after that album, so, they might have rushed some stuff. Thanks again. Be good to each other. Craig
Dan was so Steely. I wouldn't mind going to visit Rose Avenue, my elementary school again, I had memories of 25 cent missile pops and 35 cent It's Its (they are made in San Francisco) and being in chorus in 3rd grade, dressed up at He-Man in 1st grade and splitting my pants walking the beam in 2nd grade. Mrs. Chrisman in Kindergarten, Mrs. Harrington in 1st grade, Mrs. Sanders in 2nd grade, and Mrs. Caskey in 3rd. She was an awesome teacher. I went to Coleman F. Brown for 4th, 5th, and half of 6th grades. 4th, I had Mary Crabtree, 5th, I had her husband, Gary Crabtree and he taught me the lesson of never calling teachers by their first name, it's always Mrs. or Mr. then their last name. 6th, I had Sarah Lawrence and Brian Scott Sordo, we got fake money for good behavior and grades and traded it for toys and trinkets. My track aka Track B was the first one to head to the newly built Elizabeth J. Ustach Middle School (she was still alive, usually they would build schools posthumously after a teacher/educator would pass away). So, half of 6th-8th grades I was there and graduated in 1994. Then went to Beyer High all four years, graduated in 1999, they played Prince and the Revolution's "1999" song at sober grad night. after that, went to four colleges: a local junior one, then Merced Junior College, then Valley College, then Boston Reed College in Lathrop, California. I tell you, you can get sick of going to school haha, I excelled at the didactic portion. There's my educational history.
Showing my age. I've been into 'The Dan' since "Can't Buy a Thrill" dropped my sophomore year in HS. Not a bad release in their entire catalog. "Everything Must Go" was the end of an era...
Translation: Tried to warn her about chino and Daddy G. Chino was slang for Marijuana nack in the day. Daddy G is G Gordon Liddy who was the attorney general in New York.
In addition to composing great songs, and employing the best possible instrumentalists, Steely Dan also wrote highly cryptic lyrics. There is a reference to "35 sweet goodbyes" in this song. I'll leave determining the meaning of the term as an exercise for the reader. Let's just say that it doesn't refer to saying "goodbye" 35 times. 😉
Their old school was Bard on the Hudson River in New York, where future comedian Chevy Chase was their original drummer. I don't know who the girl was who wound up in the county jail, but I knew older guys that smoked with them after selling it to them. Here's a song that raises the timeless question that extends way back past Salome: is it worse when your girlfriend cheats on you, or when she ends up getting caught turning tricks for money that she doesn't even need? Steely Dan-- accept no substitutes.
Basic training and air force tech school. I was an honor graduate from both, 'cause I was making sure it didn't last any longer than it had to, and I'd never go back.
Each song has a special surprise in it like when you were a kid diggin in the cereal box. That said, this was a fun kind of blowin off steam tune. All the tracks on Aja will blow your mind 🔥
Dang, Tusk and this masterpiece back to back? Fantastic choices and teachers would also smack kids with the ruler on the back of the neck and on your skull. Never going back either…🖖🏼
Made me think back on my schooling. Haha. Most bad memories. I became an elementary teacher later. I remember fellow students saying how they loved school and had special teachers. I couldn’t say that. Haha. I loved my students but I wanted them to have a better experience in my classroom than I did!
Tasty, tasty guitar work, but strange things often happen as time marches on. Skunk Baxter was the guitarist on this and several other Steely Dan albums, is now a defense consultant and and advises U.S. members of Congress on missile defense!
Guys, you should really learn about this song. It's about college, not grade school, and even involves G. Gordon Liddy. For starters, do you understand the first line about 35 sweet goodbyes?
Hilarious the karaoke Deacon Blues story. I love Deacon Blues and anyone who sings it over and over in karaoke I could probably relate to. Hahaha. Probably not a good thing.

Daddy G. is a reference to the infamous Watergate criminal G. Gordon Liddy who was trying to bust all the college kids in the song
And one of the drug Narcs was… the notorious G Gordon Liddy, of Watergate infamy-he’s “Daddy G”!
Goddamn that sounds true or at least truer. For someone who wasn't there and a fan. Well u can imagine the interest song didn't tell the who what why when and how. ??? Tell me.

Has to be one of their all-time best jams. So much fun musically, and lyrically too!
This band has a ton of good songs! Lots of radio hits as well as some deep amazing album cuts.
My favorite Dan tune. The great Jeff "Skunk" Baxter burnin' up the guitar.
That descending guitar lick near the end of the fadeout always gives me chills.

The old school is Bard College in the Hudson Valley, NY. Fagen and Becker got their start there.
Two favorite albums by Steely Dan, 'Can't buy a Thrill, and 'Countdown to Ecstasy'! Thanks Asia and BJ, hope the New Year is treating you well.
Happy new year!
I love the guitar, piano and drum arrangement on this song. I enjoy steeley Dan and their jazz influenced rock. They are pretty fantastic.
One of my top 5 favorite bands. Steely Dan is a rabbit hole!

I hope in time someone make a musical with this songs...think about this...😅😅❤
awesome .SD will be rediscovered...once and again😊
Steely Dan is a groove
That's Skunk Baxter on lead guitar, one of the Doobie Brothers.
Always loved them
Made me think back on my schooling. Haha. Most bad memories. I became an elementary teacher later. I remember fellow students saying how they loved school and had special teachers. I couldn’t say that. Haha. I loved my students but I wanted them to have a better experience in my classroom than I did!
Oh nice, this is my favorite Steely Dan song.
My favorite Steely Dan song!
Corporal punishment! We had it in our schools in the 50's and early 60's too...
One of my favorite SD songs!
I won’t say ours was a tough school, but we had our own coroner. We used to write essays like: "What I want to be if I grow up?"
Steely Dan is so good!
Next song should be Show Biz Kids! Love them every since the first time I heard them.
Tasty, tasty guitar work, but strange things often happen as time marches on. Skunk Baxter was the guitarist on this and several other Steely Dan albums, is now a defense consultant and and advises U.S. members of Congress on missile defense!
Thank you
You're welcome
So good, period.
Would love you to react to their song “showbiz kids“. A very different vibe from them which was great
