People did not know what to make of this when it first came out, since then the reputation of this has grown and grown. It is simply a masterpiece, dirty, complex, gritty, a melting pot of styles and influences, and it rocks. Not a single dull moment from start to finish. Thanks for this, appreciation!
The best era of the Stones imo was the Jimmy Miller era from 1968 to 1973. Miller was the producer on a string of 5 spectacular albums: Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St, and Goats Head Soup.
Their demo LP bootleg is brilliant as white English boys playing music of mature African Americans that was out of date in US such that nobody of any skin shade bought it. Only Europeans were listening
'Classic rock' - not what Stones want to be known for. Richards said how lots of bands had started to play rock but they didn't roll. The Who, Cream, and Led Zep did rock - loud blues-based white British. Stones mined and redeveloped the broad range of American roots music that rolled - imagine Huckleberry Finn characters hitting late teens and 20s discovering bars, sex, sweaty work, and the music of blues, gospel, soul, country, early rock AND roll. EoMS exemplifies this. It takes me, a 68-year old Englishman, back to early 1970s washing dishes and cleaning restaurants in small town Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Riding Greyhound or Continental Trailways buses for hundreds, even thousands of miles to get across country. The Who, Blondie, and Sex Pistols remain my favourite groups as their music reflects me as an individual. Zep seemed too bombastic, even in their quieter stuff. But Stones, in that period, own the mythology. 'Living in a Ghost Town' single was a superb return to form and 'Ventilator Blues' from EoMS has proved to be almost prophetic

One of the best Stones albums ever!!! I was very into them in HS in the early 70s. My nickname was Stones. I have a huge box of posters, books and rock mags with articles about them.
Hi Wayne, I had moved to N. Long Beach, CA in 1972 with some of my friends from Vegas. This album has special meaning to me for so many reasons. The Exile On Main Street Concert also known as The American Tour was coming to The Long Beach Arena. Me, my future wife, and many friends went to see one of our all time favorite bands. Stevie Wonder opened for the Stones, incredibly the crowed was so amped up about the Stones people couldn't settle down and listen to Stevie, finally Stevie stood up and said "I'm going to get out of here & let you see the band you came for" that was a moment I've never forgotten. The Stones did not disappoint & put on an amazing performance. Whenever I cover The Stones on my channel I start by showing my Stevie Wonder album collection, my way of giving Stevie the respect he was not shown at that concert. 71 & 72 gave us Sticky Fingers & Exile on On Main Street. I would call this my favorite era. After a long search I finally found a pristine OG of Exile with all 12 postcards none of which had been separated. Great show as always bro.

I like the way you really spend time with the albums. I used to but some songs I knew weren't my thing and I'd skip to the next and eventually come back but always wanted to get the quick hits of what was enjoyable to me. And then some I skipped I wound up loving... If you haven't yet, you should give a listen to the Stones' Some Girls. Late 70s album. I think it's their best.

the Brian Jones era was Great, there was an english sensibility about their music and lyrical observations, Lady Jane, Mothers Little Helper, and many more. Yes Jimmy Miller heralded perhaps the formulaic Stones signature sound. then Keith's open G tuning from Ry Cooder, this changed their sound as well. maybe the second era was from Jimmy Miller to the Glimmer twins its only R n R, but I also like black n blue and some girls, and the El Mocambo live side. I think the El Mocambo gig should have been the whole Love you live album
Casino Boogie- you asked what million dollar sad was….that tune was created by writing words and phrases on pieces of paper and mixing them up for the lyrics. They are just random but ended up sounding cool
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the second to last track - "Shine A Light" - was written back in 1968 by Mick Jagger about his then bandmate and friend, the late Brian Jones, as he (Jones) began his sad out of control spiral of substance abuse which would lead to his eventual dismissal from the band he formed.
'Million dollar sad' -You're right. He thought Cannes, was a bore, didn't like the music, had to be nice to a lot of people, a lot of women. What's the 'appropriate' thing for Mick Jagger to say to all these 'consequential' women recording him? He thought it was a waste of a million dollars is how I see it. I'll bet he got a little drunk, had a smoke, and drifted into a song, because that's what he does.
I think it's a great album but I also think it's overrated. Of their 4 greatest albums, I'd put it 4th as I consider Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers to all be better than Exile On Main Street.....even though Exile contains my favourite Stones song of all time in Rocks Off. I do agree with Mick Jagger that the mix and production on the album lets it down. Just listen to how brilliant the mixes and production are on Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers and compare to Exile. It's interesting, and notable, that producer Jimmy Miller comments in 1968 on how erratic and unreliable Brian Jones had become in the recording of Beggars Banquet yet by 1972 he too had become an addict. Great though the album still is, it could have been so much better had he stayed clean.
Tho I like most songs of this a lot I don't like the muddied production on many of the songs. I know that is part of their sound, I think on this album they took it to far. just my opinion.

Kind of. The initial recording was Got a Line On You and has a line or two that can be referencing Jones. The final version has different lyrics

I think it works on Exile and adds to its dingy sleaze, but it goes too far on their next and last album with producer Jimmy Miller, Goats Head Soup.
