This was nice to listen to on a deliberately lazy Saturday (finally). The Rolling Stones to me are the definition of a perfect band - energy, eclecticism, intensity, intention and fire 🔥 on most every song. What I have always loved the most about them is that they pay homage musically to those artists, especially black artists, who came before them and whose pieces they would sometimes re-create in their own undeniable way. This was a nice dive MM and JJAMMIN’. 💃🏾🎼🎵🎶👍🏾

Man, your face a minute into Lovin Cup is exactly what this album is about for me! It’s just a mood all in itself. The original issue had pictures of the band in Keith’s basement putting this together. The story of that house and who was coming and going is a big part of this album and it’s sound.

Dude, the album is the soundtrack of America's musical south. Roadhouses, bars and one stoplight feed store farm towns seen through the eyes of five pimply skinny white Brits. Somehow they sooo perfectly understood our music.

This is the Stones equivalent of The Beatles White Album. Just a fantastic band going in a direction of their own liking, without having the constraints of trying to please record companies or get a quick hit song. When I first heard it I hated that it didn't have any of their biggest hits, but I've discovered that this album is a perfect sound experience. You put it on in the background on a lazy day and it's a beautiful way of passing the time., it's just not an album for rocking out to.

    • @ArmandoMPR
      @ArmandoMPR 2 роки тому +3

I don’t know about that Beatles comp. The White Album is not that cohesive, imo, and every member (minus Ringo maybe) is looking to indulge in whatever direction they are interested in. I mean, Ringo even quit because he was fed up with everyone being on their own working on the songs they wrote.
As for Exile, because I grew up with greatest hits compilations like Forty Licks it is definitely a shock at first. In college and while dealing with heartbreak I found it comforting, especially “Let It Loose”. I think that if the listener is too green on life experiences he may not get it.

I am so happy that you reacted to this album! I was hoping that someone would request it, so thank you to who did!
This album has such a particular mood, very soulful, and something else I can’t put my finger on.
I started listening to this at 13, and at first it took a few listens, but it’s one of my favorite albums ever since then. I love your reaction to it- and you really listened to it.
I agree that you need lyrics if you want to know the words he’s singing. Mick is one of the hardest singers to understand that I’ve ever heard, but I love his singing.
Rock- that’s a whole huge conversation, but basically the genre Rock has a very wide range of what can be considered Rock. The Rolling Stones, especially on this album , are playing a very heavily blues influenced type of rock, in a way only they do. ( also with that American country and folk influence, which you heard. ) Great great reaction 🙂, great job on a long haul album in one sitting!

To me this was the last of a quartet of the finest rock albums ever produced. Beggar's Banquet (1968). Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971) and this album were the Stones at their most inventive and at their raunchy best. No coincidence Mick Taylor, one of the most underrated guitarists ever, was on the last 3 albums and he added to and crystalized the classic Stones sound. He does most of the leads on Exile and he is absolutely amazing on this album...

The combination of country, blues, gospel and something from the 4th dimension. Quite an album to listen to. There is a lot going on in that 1st track with the bridge going under water with the sound, never really heard it like I am hearing it today but this may be the first time with head phones so....🎷🎺🎷...2nd track, 🎷🎹...3rd track has rockabilly/blues influence. Keith Richards has heavy roots in blues....track 4 sounds great 🎧.... 5, I love Tumbling Dice!🎲🎲 An old favorite...6 so good!....
7 sounds like southern rock....8 is another down home feeling track!....9 I love the way it takes off with the drums and piano....10 Happy & happy to hear you making out more of the lyrics(it can be challenging)...11 great jam & I love the harmonica....
12 great lyrics which I won't pretend to understand what the specific context is...13 okay....14 I love it!
I don't want to read into it but lyrics about addiction?....15 nice pace on this rock n roll track....
16 great blues guitar 🎸 on this track! 17 love the organ, like rock n roll gospel! 18 Nice way to rap up an album . Obviously what is best just depends on a set of factors which could be commercial success, ground breaking in a specific genre or just personal taste, etc. Love the album review!🔥❤️‍🔥🔥

Drunk and on heroin. Stones fans argue constantly on which is their best album. Well, I love this one BUT … Let It Bleed is my vote for best Stones’ album ever it is down right nasty, filthy, grimy. The Stones have never did what everyone did, but they have provided a musical answer to almost every style. They have their roots in the blues with a touch of country and, of course, in rock 'n' roll. Exile is a bit closer to country at the beginning but still the album is very versatile (to my taste). Exile on... and Sticky Fingers are real masterpieces not to forget the best live album ever Get Yer Ya-Ya`s Out ;-)) because I love them all. Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)

Great reaction! This is a difficult album to review. When it was first released, it was panned by most critics. It's now considered a masterpiece; it ages well. No, this shouldn't be classified as hard rock at all, and I would only consider a few songs as rockers. I'd call it more of a funky country, blues, funky blues rock album. It was recorded in the basement of Keith Richard's mansion in the south of France. The basement had a dirt floor, was dark and damp, it was summer and the heat was so bad most of the recording took place at night when it was a little cooler. The whole album has a dank murky feel to it. As far as the lyrics go, I've never seen them to this day. This album came out my second year of college and most of my roomates hated it, I loved it. Rock at the time was very varied but there was a movement to more roots/Americana type rock by groups like The Band and Delaney & Bonnie with artists like Eric Clapton and Van Morrison among the genre's admirers. Jim Price and Bobby Keys play horns on Exile and they also played with Clapton and Delaney and Bonnie. But then the Stones always had a lot of country type songs and traditional blues songs in their catalog so this music wasn't new to them. It was just never so consistent throughout an entire recording as it was here. Anyway, great reaction and I'd love to hear your opinion of the album after a second listen. Great job!

Just finished watching. Excellent reaction J!!! This was a concept album, the reason for the songs sounding similar, paying homage to the history of Black Music. Which includes Rock, the Blues, Country, R&B and Gospel Music. My favorites are Rocks Off, Rip this Joint, Tumbling 🎲, Happy, Ventilator Blues, that guitar riff is Vicious. I love Just wanna see Face, sounds like something you would hear in a small backwoods church in the country. Loving Cup, All down the line with 🔥 guitar playing from Keith Richard's and Mick Taylor. Soul Survivor with another great open g tuned riff from Keef. Then my personal favorite song from the album, Let it Loose just a epic song!! The lyrics are not too important on this album, everything is about groove and feel. Epic album and even though the Stones have better albums overall I'd still give this a 4.5 out 5.

"Rocks Off" from the first half needs another listen, it will grow on you.
This album was considered ground breaking at the time, specially for the musical composition and the instrumentation (use of sax and piano and keyboards). There was a lot of great music being produced in the '70s, but this was unique, especially...especially because it came from a rock band known for hard-rockin' songs.

I wasn't around at the time, but from what I know, contemporary reaction to Exile was rather mixed, and it wasn't until years later that it was universally recognised as the groundbreaking album it was, as it is with so many classics. At the time the music press seemed to turn against them a bit because it looked like they lost their rebellious edge and were becoming part of the 70s jet set establishment.

The Stones do a lot of country-edged songs. It fits well with the blues influence, the murky mix, and Jagger's sometimes lazy delivery.
There is no monster hit on Exile -- no Gimme Shelter or Brown Sugar or Sympathy for the Devil. It's of a piece, and it rewards repeated listening. It's a long slog and a lot of it sounds like it was recorded under water. I've probably heard it 500 times, and it still gets better and better. I've never read the lyrics by the way. There are lots of lines I can't make out, and I don't really care.

Iv'e heard it 100's of times and of all the albums I listened to,this album had the most growing power and staying power. You are right, there is a certain "haziness" to the recording, almost sounds ike it was recorded underwater. I also like that Jaggers vocals were deep in the mix, which makes his voice sound like another instrument

8:47 Dude don’t get caught up on the lyrics, focus on the vibes and the energy. If you’re grooving, that’s all that matters.

Ya you need the lyrics. They seem to have went bye you. Many are boogies. Remember rock n roll is 4x4 time. What you put over it doesn't matter. Like guitars with fuzz. Or distortion.

Bro you need the lyrics! Mick is near impossible to understand on this album! I spent years making up lyrics to his slurred undermixed vocals

I don't really take any notice of what's being said ...it's all about the riffs and horns building the monsterous grooves to lose it to...vibes

I think you're ambivalent about the Stones. When you get through an LP, especially like this one, you see their range and talent.

Alright get this: take all the color out of Led Zeppelin until they're just a sketch...and you have the Rolling Stones.
EDIT: I like the sketchiness of this album.

It’s not a pop album. It’s meant to be listened to multiple times, and the songs are roots music.

@@philipdru9290 Exactly. Exile’s lack of commercial viability makes it even better. It's a musical journey through the deep south: country, gospel, blues, rock-and-roll. It's the perfect embodiment of Gram Parsons’ coined term “Cosmic American Music.”
