What a great upload. Thanks, this is priceless. If I worked there, I would sign one of these guys just for fun. I'll bet you anything that with enough money and production and promotion, any one of these guys would be on the radio.
Some of the later songs send shivers through my bones, when I used to go to after parties in England (lots of drugs), occasionally there would be a psychopath at the party and everybody would tense up until the person had been removed. They often show the same weird confidence in themselves that these singers do.
"..I've never attempted to write Country & Western before, but there's a man who specializes in this called Ray Shepherd; and he lives in Eastborn, asked me to have a go!"
i have just had a shot at putting together of the song "i need a sign" by truly, you can either search for "i need a sign by truly" or it should be the last song in my videos.
Someone has all the Di Farrelly demos. Would love to hear Brown Brown & the 4th song on her demo. Plus I wake up at night wondering what the lyrics are for the last 2 verses are for Foggy Doggy, Rainy Janey, Sunny Honey, Snowy Joey Christmas.. It's a big band classic begging to be done professionally .. and I am 100% serious, not trying to be clever or funny
the first song is absolutely beautiful. idk why but listening to george takei and adam sandler's lovechild sing a sinead o conor cover while terrible synthesizers cry out their final notes makes me cry my eyes out yet laugh my ass off every time. before gangnam style, before william hung, there was this song.
You could make a brilliant sitcom with all of these people as characters, maybe all living on the same street - Truly, Di, Richard, Santaland bloke etc. Every episode ends with one of their songs.
good idea! this album was actually the inspiration for john shuttleworth i believe? i have just done a re mix of "i need a sign" by truly (it is on my youtube) - i have always believed in the genius of that song.....
This stuff is more interesting than the generic, made-to-appeal-to-the-widest-audience-of-adolescents-possible music that plays on any current hits radio station now. The songs on this demo tape have personality for however bad they are, which I'd rather listen to a thousand times over whoever the fuck's synth music and whining voice plays on top ten countdowns now.
***** Oli, I don't think it has anything to do with being edgy. I actually just partially listened to the first song, and already I agree with him. There's something significant to be said for "imperfect" creations - as they can come off sounding far more honest than those that are refined repeatedly over time until they're streamline and tuned. The near-stream of consciousness lyrics of the first song - and his often off-key voice - paint a character whom I actually enjoy listening to. Those quirks and imperfections can be really interesting and enjoyable. It's like listening to a stranger talk, openly, without censure or restraint.
This song is called Santaland... Santaland, Santaland, where Christmas begins for you...... Where Santa Claus on Christmas Eve makes children's wishes come true....... How do you go to this jewel in the snow? How do you find your way? The magic is yours if while you sleep You dream of Christmas Day..... In dreams, little one, The fairies will come, Take you by the hand... With a wave of their wand, You will be In Santa's magical land... Santaland, Santaland, Oh what a sight to see! With holly ho and mistletoe, A fairy's on every tree..... **paper turning intensifies** With a big hello and a Yo-Ho-Ho, Santa will welcome you... in his grotto, The toys will be there for Christmas this year, Choose all the goodies that bring you good cheer... Sleigh through the snow with Santa Claus, The reindeer, the sleigh bells will all be yours... In Santaland, Santaland, Where children want to go.... **paper turning intensifies further** Where blue birds sing, Sleigh bells ring, And Santa loves you so...... You will awake to so many toys, Christmas will be full of wonder and joys, From Santaland, for children like you, To make your Christmas wishes come true................. **loud banging noise**

Sinead's version is a cover. Nothing Compares 2 U is a Prince song from 1985, originally by The Family, one of the Purple One's spinoff groups (which he had a LOT of back then).
Listening to some of these, especially "I've been waiting/all the people with the money" with that clown picture in the background is really unsettling
I would say the originator of track 10 needs urgent psychiatric help, but if these recordings are as old as RP says they are, I fear it is far too late to save that poor fellow...
This is exactly what it says it is. These renditions of... I suppose you can call them songs... is so appalling it's **really** addictive. It's really just *so* dreadful I'm going to have to play it again.
I actually really like the first one. His pitching of notes is spot on. No worse than say Paul Potts' contribution on X-Factor in that Potts is not actually considered particularly good in the actual opera community. Also, I'm pretty sure the backing female vocals were done by his mum. Also also, 4 is better than anything in the charts today. Anything.
You Are The Best Thing in the World sounds like a cross between Shuttleworth, Lloyd Cole, and every working men's club host and Brian on keyboard. Nice to hear Ian Dury on Santaland and Foogy etc. Nice to hear some alternative version of Charlie Chuck at the end too. Moving.
Nothing Compares 2 U - I do love a singer who enunciates every letter, every syllable, every word. Clear pronunciation should always come before melody and rhythm, and it certainly does in this song. But how is Track 4 - You Are The Best Thing in the World, any worse than a lot of stuff from the 80s?
The guy who made Track 4 honestly sounds like he could've been really good at making music aimed towards children. If I was like 8 I'd love his song. I think he was going for the wrong market.
Song 1, his singing got better near the end. Truly should be known as Cocaine Heartache Country western can only be done on synthesizers by a select few. Santa Land needs a serious backing track! Thanks for sharing these, where did you come across them?
This is actually the third time I've heard of the UK making a Worst compilation of something. First time was the worst computer games ever submitted to a particular company and the second being not one but two listing of worst towns. The first one was funny because the game outright told you to not buy it and instead pirate it. Amazing.
Holy shit... This is incredible! More surreal than anything the Frogs or Ween would ever produce on purpose. My friend said this, and I agree: Fever dream.
i've just done a bit of studio magic on it and tried to imagine the pop hit he was thinking of - "i need a sign by truly". it's a funky 6/8 beat he is laying down by the way!
"Nothing compares 2 U" - sounds like George Takei did a cover of an O'Connor song. Whom ever sang this tried, not like the guy who followed him. "You Are the Best thing in the World" - sounds like it would fit in as a credit roll song on a JRPG where no one bothered to try to make it 'work' in English; just quirky bad. "Santaland" - this song is just pervy (stay away from the windowless van!!!) "All the people with the money" -- ???? this is just terrible!!!!
Here's my personal abridged review of these tracks: Track 1 0:15 - Sound like if your dad got drunk and embarrassed you on karaoke night. Track 2 5:13 - OMG, this guy isn't even trying. Absolutely pathetic. Track 3 7:36 - Uurgh! The song has much cheese in it, that it's nauseating! Track 4 13:05 - This individual is less like a Country Western singer and more like someone I'd hire for a preshool kid's party...if I was short on cash. Track 5 19:20 - This guy has the voice of an Angel...of Death! Track 5 23:15 - It's like if Bob Dylan was born again...without his ability to sing, play guitar or write cohesive lyrics. Conclusion: I you looking for last minute novelty gift, burn these hot tracks on a CD and give it to someone you love (or hate).
i've just remixed song two "i need a sign" by truly - i could always see the genius in that song - sounds like shaggs meets lost classic by william onyeabor...... 6/8 btw!
Is it bad that I actually liked quite a few of these? Nothing Compares 2 U, the singer's voice might be a bit unusual but I liked it myself. Proof that it's hard to truly ruin a good song. You Are the Best Thing in the World had some weak lyrics but was actually super fun to listen to. The trio of songs by the woman could have been spiced up with a better singer and some real instruments (as opposed to the Casio-sounding keyboard), but overall they seemed charming and quirky. Even Santaland wouldn't have been terrible with accompaniment and a different vocalist. The only ones that I Truly thought were bad were... well, the ones by Truly (these are also the ones that are most believable as demo submissions, I've heard tracks almost exactly like that as demos brought in to the studio where I record) and the second song by the Santaland guy, it sounded like he forgot the words and started making it up as he went along. But as for All the People With the Money... that... THING is in a category of its own. I don't know WHAT that is.
you are the best thing in the world is actually my jam.
Shouldn't you add peanut butter to that?

'You Are The Best Thing In The World' is absolutely deranged - and strangely brilliant.

What a great upload. Thanks, this is priceless. If I worked there, I would sign one of these guys just for fun. I'll bet you anything that with enough money and production and promotion, any one of these guys would be on the radio.
There's a sort of fabric rubbing sound during santaland - disturbing.
Some of the later songs send shivers through my bones, when I used to go to after parties in England (lots of drugs), occasionally there would be a psychopath at the party and everybody would tense up until the person had been removed. They often show the same weird confidence in themselves that these singers do.
Studeb yes. This is a great discription.
Whoever did that cover of "Nothing Compares to U" sounds like they are desperate to not give away that they are in fact a German Vampire
"I'm a cool guy" is probably the greatest lyrical line of all time.

Poor Di Farelly really sounds amazingly depressed in the spoken word note on Alfreston and the incongruity makes it hilarious.

Is there anyway for me to get a physical copy of this
Is it bad that I actually liked quite a few of these?
