Primus - Sucking Songs (1986 Demo)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лют 2021
- This is the first release by Primus ever, as described in the Electric Grapevine book. The demo is also known as the Primus Sucks Demo Tape, and predates the Sausage tape by two years. It was recorded at Dancing Dog Studios with Lauren Miller as Engineer. "Sgt. Baker" features different lyrics and "They" is an early version of "Eleven". "Welcome To This World" is not apart of the original tape tracklist, but is another high-quality demo recording from the era added as a fun bonus.
Label has hand-written track titles and contact information by Les Claypool himself, and he also drew and designed the cover artwork. The tape was created with the intention of receiving airplay at radio stations and also to distribute at the early shows. This tape now resides in the collection of Frankie.
1) Tommy the Cat - 0:00
2) Temporary Phase - 4:45
3) Sgt. Baker - 10:46
4) They - 15:16
5) Welcome To This World - 20:01

I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THE MUSIC IN THIS VIDEO
Important Note: I have no intent on this being used as a sort of piracy. I've only uploaded this strictly as means for preservation and availability. I understand this tape was not meant to be uploaded to UA-cam after it was acquired, but I believe something this significant to the history of Primus should not be left to obscurity in a private collection.
absolute chad
I mean all the songs are free to hear on youtube, and the views on this over it's life time would probably be pennies of ad revenue.
@@JohnSmith-fq3rg This video isn't monetized.
@@mrHubris I know, I meant from the recordings not being in the copyright system.
Thank you for this... Epic AF!... Cheers!
When you speed it up 1.25, you get normal Tommy the Cat
Im now 100% convinced that Les Claypool accidently fast forwarded the original Tommy the Cat and thought, "Hey i can do that!"
This is the best comment
@@dylangrandin4121 A lot of bands tend to speed their songs up over time. Look at the Ramones last performance of Blitzkrieg Bop, it's funny how much they sped up lol
Spot ON!
Pretty good at .75 also
Sgt. Baker recorded here in '86 and then released on Eeas of Cheese in '91. Amazing.
Holy shit! How fucking cool is this to stumble across years later? 😲
How the hell was Tommy The Cat written in the mid 80s... Sounds like an alien jazz song from the future
This demo blows my F*cking mind.
Mine too
Man, do primus cover pls!
@@resusfactor_2286 I did already
@@maromaro1337 then do another one)
It's mid-late 90's live, not a demo
These early demos show Les's ability as a singer more than the actual studio recordings. "They" is so cool.
sgt baker sounds more terrifying here to me
It was later called Eleven on Sailing…
While I understand, and appreciate, the sentiment, go listen to their demo "Sausage" with Jay and Todd. You'll hear regular Primus without Herb or Larry.
Having said that, Les, Larry and Tim will always be the "real" Primus to me.
Les Claypools voice sounds really cool on these!
As a musician, I really appreciate this music. I remember the first time I heard them in about 92. A younger friend of mine brought a Primus CD to me. Blew my mind.
Had to see it to believe it. Les is that good. Been a fan ever since.
Saw them in late 80s or maybe 90 at the Haight Street Fair! We were like "Who the fuck are these guys!?!?!" Seen 'em maybe 30 - 40 times in the Bay Area! Bay Area music was at it's peak. Good times.
god damn slow tommy the cat is BANGIN
Les: at this speed anyone can play it; let’s do this twice as fast and I’ll play it on six string fretless.
This is actually better than a lot of the later, major label stuff. The recording is excellent.
Mannnnnnnn oh man....what I’d do to see this in a dive bar in the 80s
you’ve gifted me a brand new alternative love to my favorite band, and I can’t put in words how much it means to me (and anyone else who listens to it I’m sure) 🤙🏼
thanks for sharing this treasure! Temporary Phase sounds great on this.
Dude when I looked up suck on this to listen to it I thought that was the earliest recording of primus, but omg this and like 3 different demos pre suck on this came up and I literally shouted,” holy shit” this is fucking awesome thank you
Yep... It was Primus
Sucks and there the Sausage Tape...

thank you for posting! this version of Tommy is awesome
Holy shit this is awesome..Thanks for preserving this amazing demo..

So fun to stumble onto this earliest piece of Primus history, thanks for the great upload
Dope thanks for posting g
Wow I never heard this one 1986 lol got my drivers license and ran Mr.Claypool off my fishing spot at the mothball fleat when he tryed anchoring me and my buddy down, remember that les. Man the F@@@n Good Old Day's ROCK!
dude this is so badass thanks for uploading it man!
thank you so much for sharing this
#2 DAMN!!! Primus fan all my life and missed this one some how along that adventure I call mine
This is on the Sausage album. It’s amazing.
Thanks for posting
this is amaaaazing- a true relic - im freakin out
thats so cool. thanks very much! I wish they would do more in this direction
I´ve been a primus fanatic for many years and I had never listened to temporary phase or they, thanks a lot
Guitar for tommy the cat is actually to epic
Todd Huth is a fucking genius. I love Ler, but goddammit I love Todd as well. I'm actually friends with both of those dudes. Friends with Ler in real life, and friends with Todd via Facebook. Both are SUPER nice guys. So fucking cool. Ler actually offered me free tickets to any shows I ever wanna go to. I lost count after like show #25 er so. Got backstage passes in 2012 on Halloween in ATL and got to meet and hang out with Ler, Les and Jay Lane for the very first time. That was probably the greatest night of my entire life. They're all so fucking nice, and Ler and Les are absolutely hysterical. Ler introduced me to Tim Alexander at the show in Athens, GA during the 2020 tour, so I finally got to meet Herb. N he couldn't have possibly been nicer. All the PRIMUS members (past and present) are genuinely good people. I was so relieved to find that out when I first met 'em all. I was very afraid that they'd turn out to be total dicks! So glad that wasn't the case. -
@@shroomshady27 my dream Is to once meet them all one day
thank you for your service.
The best and criative band of the world! I enjoyed Primus music world in 1997 and was one of the best thing happened to me. First Saw and listened Primus - Salling the Sea of Cheese... Wow! Blew my mind! Drive me crazy on the best sense of the word.
Epic upload!!! we thank you. Your mission as stated is a noble one.
I found this an interesting listen in the context it's their first ever release of anything. If I had to cite one thing that is missing that is different here it's confidence. They are playing it in a way that doesn't exude the confidence they have after this to let it all hang out. Les is not in full character. They held back here. That said eleven/they is epic here. Very interesting listen
This is everything to me rn mane
Tommy the Cat acid trip edition
many, many hits!
Holy shit. This is awesome.
Bless you, man!
Gracias, señor!
This is so cool to hear.
My goal for this year is to listen to Primus and only Primus. 😎 What a nice start to a New Year! 😃
Hows ur goal going?
Crazy that less than a year later, les would be asking Metallica if they wanted to jam on some Allman Brothers tunes
Edit: Isley brothers, I watched the interview again and caught my mistake
will watch this soon
Nice I remember looking for this tape months ago and being unable to find
I thought about calling that number, but I figured some innocent poor sap has received 3000 calls this month asking for Les.
LOL if that was my number, I'd be like "saybabydoyouwannalaybymyside"
The East Bay switched area codes to (510) in 1991 then east of the Berkeley hills went to (925) in 1998. Is El Sobrante east of the hills? i think El Cerrito is...
This is the best ever!
thanks for share, weird how this is still so obscure considering is their official first recording.
This demo is for everyone that could not understand any lyrics on any Primus song to hear it slow enough to be able to grasp.
Amazing!
what i like the most is Mr. Claypools personal number on the tape.
awesome thanks
I love Ler & Tim but this is amazing!
I don’t think Tim is doing the drums in this
@@jackhodgkinsontv2308 This is Todd Huth and Tim Wright
@@jackhodgkinsontv2308 i believe he is aware of that
@@jackhodgkinsontv2308 That is his point.
What impresses me is how much of the previous guitarist's style influenced nearly everything Ler would go on to record with the band. The slower, heavier drumming is also pretty cool.
this guitar arrange on "welcome to this world" is sooo catchy!
finally a tommy the cat i can play along with
happy bday Les Claypool ;-)
🔥 crisp quality treasure
So good
Really shows the old Peter Gabriel and XTC influence on Les back in the day.
I think raw rare tracks of bands are interesting you get a taste of how they started and the evolution of there sound I think it is great people upload this stuff there is a lot of songs that sometimes don’t even make it to let alone just demos and then the final product of a debut album that is actually included on uncommercial tracks that sometimes never make it to any present commercial albums so I think it’s fun and should be shared I would not mind this being done to any music I write really I think it actually even without any profit to anyone I think it is important to history and helps the bands get more clout anyway
Woah, man,I like the demo version of tommy the cat more than the original! This tape is pretty great, I would pay for a reissue. Thanks for the upload!
Technically, the Demo is the original!
Uhhhh Thank you!
phenomenal version of "temprary phase" 4:45
holy shit, welcome to this world is cool
It sounds menacing!!!
Cool reminder at this time Larry lalonde would’ve been a death metal guitarist with possessed I’m friends with Jeff of possessed and I got him to say hi to Ler for ne
I still have a dubbed copy of this from the era. 😁Not THIS exact cassette, but somebodies from that time. I've lived in the East Bay since 1987 and got it from a friend who was way cooler than me at the time. 😂One of a couple hundred cassettes that I just can't let go. I don't listen to them, but they're in the closet if I want to.
Frankie must be a happy man.
Whose Frankie?
This is absolutely mind blowink.
@@trashjuice8598 I'm Frankie. In 2019 I along with fellow fans at the new bullboard bought the tape and transfered it to digital.
Frankie is one half of the Primus Tracks duo
Complete savante when it comes to the Primus catalog
@@darryljudd7361 say what?? He's the drummer?? (I know the guitarist was Todd Huth at the time..can't remember the drummer, other than Brain for a brief period).. Is the above commenter actually telling the truth about transcribing the recordings?
This is proof that Tim and Larry are just as much responsible for Primus sounding so amazingly awesome as Les is...
except this isn't Tim and Larry dude. This is Todd Huth (guitar, later drums) and Jay Lane playing drums.
Todd Huth should collaborate with Ler Lalonde next album if he hasn't already
@@thegreatitudecoach I think he means these songs sound a lot better with Ler and Tim. They sound good with Todd and Jay too but Ler and Tim are on another level.
@@thegreatitudecoach the drummer is Tim Wright on this one.
Curveball
Back when acid was heavily perscribed.
I find it interesting that this is before everything and its music isn’t on the first album.
I saw somewhere les saying that the first album they wrote together as a band was pork soda, he is even singing about jay lane in fish on, while Tim is playing the drums.
It certainly is bizarre, like how Heckler went all the way until antipop, where it became a mere hidden track at the end of coat-tails
@@elliotrudd1265jellikit never made it to a real album
Wow I love the slow tempos....lends itself much better to the Peter Gabriel influence.
Never heard this one man thanks primus sucks!
Curveball's dance beats are super cool to me!
My father was actually a childhood friend of Tim Wright, he gave my dad a copy of this tape, but he lost it when moving, awesome to hear it
Ask your dad what year it was really made, It was made in 1987 According to the first owner of this tape, Ask your pops
@PreludeFear2112 He thinks around 1987, at least that's when Tim gave him the tape.
This tape on UA-cam was sold by a lady that said les gave it to her in 1987. Not 1986. Cool story maybe someday you will your dads copy in some old shoe box if so let me know. thanks
Please ask you dad if he remembers what the club was named where he got this tape ? I know a lot of old clubs that primus played, I would be very curious if he remembers the name of the club or bar thanks
@susanhutchinson6023 he actually received the tape when Tim was visiting him in Ohio, not in a club, so sorry I can't help
Tommy is definitely on the psycahdelics in this version
Primus fan for 20 yrs, just hearing this now. Wowee..... also, I'm Canadian, so I'm not going to try that number on the cassette... but has anyone else? :p
LOL I commented the same thing before I saw your comment. Call it lol
"Hey Les, it's James Hetfield. I changed my mind about your audition" lol
Wow. "Temporary Phase" sounds like something from the Brown Album. Plenty of postpunk influence on display here as well.
Also, for anyone curious, the number is for ADA Amps, which was based in Oakland, CA at the time. Maybe Les worked there?
It is brown album, this is a live show from the late 90's.

How did you get that version of welcome to this world if it wasnt part of the original tape? just curious. Its mad listening to this super early versions, they sound alot more funk based than the rockier sound of the later 80's/90's. Thanks for the upload!
It was included with the download of this album I was given, and I decided to leave it in this upload. This version of Welcome To This World (which is from either 1986 or 1987) is already on UA-cam and has an extended intro.
He stole it from my tape ua-cam.com/users/shortsCKX9wiihAP8
He stole it from my 1986 demo and used it without asking

I like sgt. Baker here much more than the album version, and its sad that this is the only upload of this version on this site. It sounds a bit better in that tempo, also feels more lively when its less refined. And that scream at the end 😆
