One of the greatest ANTI Suicide Songs ever written.....at the time it was released (1984) the Lyrics helped me to continue the daily struggle with Life!
One of the most impressive things is that this song does not sound 36 years old and has aged amazingly, you would not guess this was from 1984. That’s crazy to thing how old but how amazing the production is
This song has saved a lot of lives. In case you didn't catch it, it's basically a look into the mind of someone having suicidal thoughts. Metallica has said that they've had tons of people approach them and say how they thought they were all alone until this song made them realize that other people felt like they did. They didn't realize that other people could relate. Also, that solo at the end is, I think, Kirk Hammet's best.
In my opinion, this could quite potentially be one of their greatest songs. It has the best of both worlds, the soft melodic intro and gradually intensifies. Absolutely amazing!
Fun Halloween fact: guitarist Kirk Hammett is a huge horror collector, and has his own line of horror themed guitars. He plays them on stage as well. The Mummy, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, a Ouija board. Fun to check out.
One of the lowest points in my life was when I stayed in a hospital for a few days due to a suicide attempt. The only thing that kept me sane was writing the lyrics of Fade to black over and over in my notebook. I couldn’t listen to music so everything was from memory. I’m glad that part of my life is over at least for now but like always Metallica is always apart of my life as it changes.
@@kornishpasty thank you, depression never goes away but I’m in a very different head space now than I was then. Now I have my own house, wife and beautiful daughter, something the old me could’ve never imagined.

Blackened might be my favorite of their straight, "thrash" songs, and the remixed & remastered version with Jason's crushing bass is amazing. But I think the best thing James ever wrote is Fade to Black, at least lyrically speaking.
Sooo I heard this weird guy have been constantly suggesting you react to Karnivool - Goliath, and that seems like a really solid idea, mainly because I'm that weird guy, and Karnivool are freakin awesome. Great reaction by the way, brings back good memoriea, my mum actually introduced me to Metallica when I was about 13-14, and that started me on my love of metal.
Great reaction, you were really feeling it! Love your authenticity and love for the music. And yes, they have the record in Moscow 1991. You gotta do a reaction to a live from that show! "Enter Sandman" and "Creeping Death" live in Moscow 91 are the best and most reacted and are TOTALLY worth it! Peace.
Heard this live along with 10,000 other people when I was 12 years old. Gigantic coffins descended from the arena ceiling on long chains and looked over us lower and lower as the set progressed. Been a diehard long haired metal head ever since.
Who would have ever thought that bands like Metallica playing thrash metal would have become so popular. Especially because at the time thrash metal got no radio play, no promotion, wasn't really much of videos yet. It was the most hated most derided type of music by average Joe's, parents, government and critics. Now that the big four are so popular it's kind of amazing. Just saw Slayers final show ever. You really should go down the Slayer rabbit hole too :) Great reaction.
Yeah and those squares are missing out since every album is worth a listen. I disagree with the more pretentious fans who don’t let bands evolve even if it’s entirely the band doing their thing.
@@spongylord7131 love pretentious people who don't bother asking if the person has actually listened to those albums or like them. I like Black, S&M, and Monster Magnet. Fuel was mostly garbage IMO. The loss of Cliff Burton is the signifying factor. ...And Justice For All still had Cliffs fingerprints all over it. You shouldn't demean someone because they like a groups sound in certain evolutions. Those albums are my youth. They have deep meaning for me. The later stuff doesn't.

@@Godspeed1756 My only issue is discounting half or more of their work as not even albums just because they aren’t personal favorites. I don’t like much Megadeth but I wouldn’t insult their fans by saying they only have 4 (and a half?) albums. Curious what that .5 is anyways. Load?
Ride the Lightning! I tried telling everyone how good Metalica was before MoP came out then when they released MoP everyone was saying oh "they're so great" NO RIDE THE LIGHTNING
When four guys get together being 21 22 year olds, compose and record this masterpiece, that’s when you know the stars have aligned. 1984. The rest, as we all know, is metal’s royal history
1 - Transition all those hand-movements to head-banging. 2 - Behold the masterful musicianship of Cliff Burton. 3 - 4.5 Albums. Metallica died with Cliff. What you still get are only the aftershocks of a shredding bass.
The first four albums are masterpieces in different ways. I personally lean towards Kill em All as a masterpiece of youthful energy and just being anthemic to the energy of the times
Master of Puppets is more popular, but Ride the Lightning will always be the best Metallica LP. Just like Paranoid is the most popular Black Sabbath LP, but Master of Reality, Vol.4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are better.
And Justice for All will always be my favorite album, but when I just want to jam all the way out thru a whole album, Master of Puppets is my go to, no question. Bangers the whole way!
the fading trick adds memorabilia effect on the song! it makes it go on in ur head making u think more about the song and a greater chance that u would listen to it again! "Free bird" by Beatles, one of the most iconic songs ever fades out then fades back in just to fade out again quickly! it creates a mystery effect on ur brain!
I'd seen from several other reaction videos that at one concert they played before 1.6 million people. Granted I wasn't there personally, and that was the first time I heard that, but IF that's true that would be absolutely awesome
I just started watching you guys and your already one of my favorites who do reaction videos, keep it up guys there's alot more great music to listen to, good bless!
Welcome to my youth in the 80's guys... a TON of music that fires you up like nothing else... Sabbath, Zep, Metallica, Dio, Ozzy's solo stuff, Iron Maiden... on and on and on...
Fun fact: Metallica is the only performance artist to have played a show on all 7 continents on the planet Earth. In December of 2013, they played a show in Antarctica. Take a moment to let the magnitude of that sink in.
Thanks for another great video, if you guys want to dabble in black sabbath Electric Funeral, Black Sabbath, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Wizard are great picks IMO
Great reaction guys Holy wars by MEGADETH is a must the video not just the lyrics need to see those boys in action plus sepultura "dead embryonic cells" 👌
On September 28, 1991, AC/DC, Pantera, Metallica, The Black Crowes, E.S.T. had a show in Moscow that drew 1.6 million crowd... while concert was free and Metallica was only a part of it, according to Wikipedia, it's still 5th largest crowd recorded...
Anything after the Black Album probably isn’t gonna get many requests. There are great songs after that album and even the newest stuff is good, but Black Album and before are the golden years. Most of what you listen to from them in that time frame is gonna be badass.
The Monsters of Rock tour in 1991 played in Moscow to the tune of 1.6 million people. Plenty of videos on youtube of Metallica and Pantera's sets from that concert.
My first favorite Metallica song was For Whom the Bell Tolls. And my first favorite Primus song was Those Damned Blue Collar Tweakers. Love those songs.
To answer the question, yes, Metallica and a few other groups as a part of Monsters of Rock played in front of the largest ever crowd (1.6 million according to Wikipedia) for a music show/festival, at Tushino Airfield in Moscow on 9/28/91. 4 other musical artists have played in front of more people, but they weren't concerts/festivals (New Year's Eve in Rio, Bastille Day in Paris, & Moscow's 850th anniversary celebration).
First time I heard this song was on a DBZ music video, back when Napster was still a thing. And it was set to the whole Gohan vs Cell arc, and it just worked perfectly. The emotion in the song just worked with the action on screen. Every time I hear it, I keep seeing images of DBZ. And that's how I got into Metallica was a kid.
First album from Metallica - Kill 'Em All, 1983. Great album of theirs and considered by many to be THE first big thrash release. Literally every song on it is a banger imo, but Seek & Destroy is sort of the anthem of them all. Personally, I'd suggest Whiplash, though. That song is the epitome of pure early thrash metal to me 🤘
Somewhere around 5:50 ya'll were talking about how this album revolves around death. Yea. You nailed it. "Ride The Lightning". Album cover has a chair with electricity on it. Electric chair.
Exactly, that’s solo with James rhythm guitar underneath and all the drums crashing just makes you feel like you’re soaring !.....Try Prong - “Smash for fingers, Smash your neck” for a Halloween song....Lol , It’s awesome especially with a strobe light going on
Moscow 1991, estimated 1.6 million probably actually close to 2 million. The Stage was set up at the end of an airport runway & the crowd took up the entire at least 5 thousand foot runway. It was the Monsters of Rock 1991 & the first MAJOR concert series to hit Russia right before the fall of Communism. Metallica, AC/DC & Pantera were the headliners for the show.
In the early-mid 90s, if you put a 5 act rock festival together and somehow got (in no order of popularity) Metallica, U2, AC/DC, Van Halen, and Bon Jovi all to play it in one night, at the right spot you might get the largest crowd ever assembled. And that’s likely to this day.
Yes, they hold the record, for the largest concert, during the 91' tour, promoting their "And...Justice For All" album, with at least 1.6 million people, in Moscow, Russia, for the fall of Socialism/Communism in the country. As, they were not allowed any influence from the Western countries. And, for an FYI, the lead singer of Megadeth(My favorite song by them is, "Symphony Of Destruction"!), Dave Mustaine, was the original guitarist, for Metallica, before Jason Newsted took over, in the early 80's, then Newsted had a falling out with Metallica and formed his own band, so Robert Trujillo took over since then. So, the member's are James Hetfield vocal's & rhythm guitar, Jason Newsted(Early 80's until early 00's, when Trujillo took over his position.) Bass guitar & backing vocal's, Kirk Hammett(After, the death of Cliff Burton, in the mid 80's.) lead guitar & backing vocal's and then Lars Ulrich on the drum's & backing vocal's...
Hammett's final solo in this song is, by far, my favorite from him. It sounds so melodic and aggressive simultaneously. Great song.

Blackened might be my favorite of their straight, "thrash" songs, and the remixed & remastered version with Jason's crushing bass is amazing. But I think the best thing James ever wrote is Fade to Black, at least lyrically speaking.
I'm loving this channel! Keep it up guys
That solo has got me into metallica
When i give a listen to metallica in 2019
And now i am a fan of james hetfield he is my favourite ❤🤘🏽😍
Great reaction, you were really feeling it! Love your authenticity and love for the music. And yes, they have the record in Moscow 1991. You gotta do a reaction to a live from that show! "Enter Sandman" and "Creeping Death" live in Moscow 91 are the best and most reacted and are TOTALLY worth it! Peace.
Disposable Heroes by Metallica!!!! It's pretty underrated.
2nd this. That song is so amazing, it never fails to cause me to shed a tear.
BACK TO THE FRONT!!🤘🤘

Could be a fitting way to commemorate Memorial Day, no?
Man, this song takes me back...
Metallica has 4.5 albums to any old school Metallica fan. Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, and Garage Days
@@Godspeed1756 Oh I see you saying 4.5 albums in no way suggests you might think that way? Cuz maybe edit your comment then since that’s 100% how you come off eh. How about state you disagree, instead of hinting that you do agree then getting upset when it gets commented on.
@@spongylord7131 Fam it's all love bro. And my original comment is barebones. It was your interpretation of it. Much love and have a great Halloween 🎃
I tried telling everyone how good Metalica was before MoP came out then when they released MoP everyone was saying oh "they're so great"
NO RIDE THE LIGHTNING
Ride the Lightening is better than MoP
When four guys get together being 21 22 year olds, compose and record this masterpiece, that’s when you know the stars have aligned. 1984.
The rest, as we all know, is metal’s royal history
I got to grow up in the best era!!! God, this puts me right back in highschool🥰. Never, ever gets old!
So brothers Great reaction. So glad you found metal world, its a beautiful place
I wish i could totally forget this song and listen to it for the first time again.
I love the guitar chorus at the beginning 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hellz yeah 🤘. Used to rock this and Pantera back in highschool on church trips on my Aiwa cd player 🤣
Live in Moscow. There's a music video for it. The crowd was insane!!
1 - Transition all those hand-movements to head-banging.
2 - Behold the masterful musicianship of Cliff Burton.
3 - 4.5 Albums. Metallica died with Cliff. What you still get are only the aftershocks of a shredding bass.
Love this track, Cliff Burton's bass is bad-ass! Miss you Cliff.🤘
6 ppl can’t grasp perfection, disliking a masterpiece of a song 🎧
Keep it up
You put up videos I would've requested.
This is the song that lit James on fire during a live gig in Montreal in 1992. He accidently stepped on a 12 ft. flame.
"Master of Puppets" is Metallica's masterpiece album.
I agree, it was this album that got me into Metallica as well as more metal after
The first four albums are masterpieces in different ways.
@@ayanleman Cliff'em All
the fading trick adds memorabilia effect on the song! it makes it go on in ur head making u think more about the song and a greater chance that u would listen to it again!
Not a bad one in that bunch!! They should do Sabbath on the Sabbath (Sundays) 😊🤘🏽
@@ShanLH5 Damn I like the ring to that
Great reaction guys Holy wars by MEGADETH is a must the video not just the lyrics need to see those boys in action plus sepultura "dead embryonic cells" 👌
The adrenaline rush when I’ve seen them live is hard to explain⚡️🤘🏾
Amazing reaction as usual!!
May the LORD GOD bless you!!
First time I heard Metallica was In USMC BOOT CAMP PI. I've been a fan ever since.
For me this is the best Metallica song... I love this song
Exactly, that’s solo with James rhythm guitar underneath and all the drums crashing just makes you feel like you’re soaring !.....Try Prong - “Smash for fingers, Smash your neck” for a Halloween song....Lol , It’s awesome especially with a strobe light going on
Love me some old school Metallica any day 🤘🏼
Two of the best guitar outros of all time. Metallica Fade to Black, and Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb Pulse concert.
1991 Monsters of Rock Festival in Moscow/Russia.....1.5 MILLION People were there !!!!!!
Metallica are with out a doubt true musician's. Tha melody the lyrics the power...awesome.
Slayer - Dead Skin Mask. You know Ed Gein, the inspiration behind Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Slayer wrote this about him.
Thank you 2 Thats all Just thanxxxxx!
Watching you reacting to my favourite songs one by one is so mystically 🎃
In the early-mid 90s, if you put a 5 act rock festival together and somehow got (in no order of popularity) Metallica, U2, AC/DC, Van Halen, and Bon Jovi all to play it in one night, at the right spot you might get the largest crowd ever assembled. And that’s likely to this day.
I always find it so cute when newbies freak out over Lars hahaha
