  • All of the body work is done. metalwork and body filler work got is all finished, now it is time to get this Rolls-Royce Ghost painted. And I am going to show you how to get it all done in the driveway while still getting a professional end result. There is sure a technic to this, but I will show you all of the tips and tricks necessary to get it done right while explaining the full paint process start to finish. There is really no need for the paint booth, as long as you know what to do and I'll show you how.

Don't think it would be worthy of doing a video on The last video on this Rolls-Royce will drop on Sunday and at the very end I will do a sneak peek into the New project. Nice work and well explained. I noticed that you friend had not cut his grass. This is very important to keep the trash down, because a newly mowed lawn can generate a lot of dust and particles. When I lived back in New South Wales decades ago, a friend and I used to work on cars at his place and he never cut his grass for a couple of weeks before we were going to do painting. I remember one time a large bug landed in the paint, but the paint was almost dry, so it only got stuck by its feet. Once the paint was dry, we were able to remove the bug, leaving just the feet behind. Looking forward to seeing the end result, which no doubt will be at least as good as OEM. Actually, you should be careful not to exceed OEM, because it will show up the rest of the vehicle!! All the best from Queensland Australia.

    awesome driveway job. i personally don't like to mask off my primered area because of that line it makes and that line is hard to sand out. I've seen them show thru the paint even after it looks like they've feathered them out good.

    • @fix206
      @fix206  3 роки тому

      I normally always put my masking paper little further out so that way I don't run my primer all the way up to it, the masking paper is basically there just to keep the smaller overspray droplets off of the adjacent panels. This way I don't ever get any hard lines that I have to sand

    • @fix206
      @fix206  2 роки тому +2

      Thank man! As far as the materials go, sometimes the availability on them will vary depending on your location. Plus I'm always trying new brands of basecoat, clearcoat, primer, sealer, Bondo and so on to see if I find something new that's cheaper and better that other stuff that I have used in the past. Most of the products you can acquire at your local autobody supply/paint store will work. I personally don't use PPG or Dupont basecoat/clearcoat because of the high cost. There are a lot of good cheaper alternatives that will be on par with more expensive stuff. And the only time I would use higher end materials is when I'm working on a higher end vehicle. But most of the time I repair just your run-of-the-mill cars therefore there is no need to shell out a bunch more money on your top shelf materials..

    • @fix206

      I'm not sure what type of a paint it is, all I know that it's not waterborne, it gets reduced 1:1 and I put a couple of coats of clear over it, hope this explanation is good enough :-) As far as single stage paint goes it is still available, but my understanding is that it is primarily being used on fleet vehicles to keep the cost down.

    • @fix206

      if the freshly painted vehicle is sitting outside in a 30 degree weather it may take a week or so for clear to mostly cure... but if the rig is sitting in a garage then probably 2-3 days... normally I do a sniff test, it you put you nose right up to the fresh clear a take a whiff and you don't smell anything then you're good, if there is even a slight presence of smell then it's still not cured

    Be curious on how paint looks compared to the OEM. RR has quite the process, especially on the Ghost's. Several layers of clear, each sanded smooth between coats. I understand that is not the purpose for this exercise though.

    • @fix206
      @fix206  3 роки тому

      Oh I'm sure it's quite a process, but I'm pretty sure I got it close enough to where 99% of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. And as far as my friend/the owner of the car is concerned, that's good enough :-)

      @@fix206 Thanks for the response. If you wouldn't mind, do you think you could tell me what you see when you finish the cut and polish? I know there are many variables, including the clear coat quality vs the OEM. I know you have an idea of what you are looking at, and a camera will never show it. I'm always looking to learn how close a person can get to those finishes utilizing these cost effective methods. No worries if you can't or don't want to get into that kind of detail. I've done some high end work in a prior life, but of course I had access to high end materials and always wondered... LOL

    • @fix206
      @fix206  3 роки тому

      I never really try and get some crazy looking finish, most of the stuff I work on is just your standard run-of-the-mill cars that don't require a show quality look. With this one I literally just flattened out any of the orange peel that was present within the clearcoat and did a 3 step buff... The finish I ended up with wasn't too far off from other panels that retained their original paint. So I was good with that. And I'm sure if anyone was overly picky they can find a flaw in just about anything.

      50% sometimes 75-80% just depends on things such as whether I am painting a horizontal or a vertical panel, if I'm using thicker or thinner clearcoat, also ambient temperature makes a difference so if it's warmer outside than 75-80% overlap works out better

    people who watch his channel you will learn more from school or someone who has experience

      You are right, the only way to learn is to go to school or find someone who has at least 30-40 years of experience in this field so they can teach you every single thing that I know in just a few weeks. And also since I have no experience in this field no one should listen to a word that I say. Well guess what, I went to school for this and I learned more in my first couple of months on the job that I did in the whole time I was in school. You sound like a true expert in this field... Mind sharing some of your work?

    Painting half the bumper? On a Rolls? You already have it off why not do it properly then?

    • @fix206
      @fix206  2 роки тому

      There's more than one way to do it properly, the area at the bottom of the bumper is very thin so it is perfect for a seamless transition. Also this way the other side of the bumper that did not get repainted, retained the original color match to an undamaged fender.

    God help who ever buys that frankenstein Rolls.....

      Structurally this Rolls Royce was fine even in its "wrecked" state. All I had to do was to fix all of the cosmetic stuff. Therefore if this thing gets into an accident later on down the road it will take that impact just as well as it did first time around. All of the outer skin on all of the vehicles is there mostly just for looks. It's the inner structure of the doors and quarter panels that is made of much thicker/stronger metal and that along with A, B, C pillars is what provides most of the structural protection in case of a side impact

    I'm just trying to figure how you can own a $300k car but cheap out when it comes to repairing it.No way I'm getting my $300k RR repaired in a driveway.

      If you watch the first video of the Rolls-Royce series, I stated there that this was my friends car. In my videos I show people what could be done in their garage or even in a driveway. I have worked at a bodyshop years ago where I've seen other technicians come out with having worse end results while working in a controlled environment. Comes to show that you don't need a fancy building with a lot of fancy tools and a paint booth to achieve a good end result. It's all about what you know.

    Could you please stop doing your stuff to our cars? They’re looking better than new cars off our assembly lines! Yours truly, Rolls Royce CEO.
