Here's a tip on pouring paint from a can. If you put masking tape over the seal in the tin, it stops the paint getting into the seal. I picked that up on Junkyard Dave's channel.
Great to see a new video, I've been waiting patiently for you to upload again. The truck turned out great. I sure hope you have the time to continue making and uploading videos regularly. You always have interesting and informative videos.
Thank you Bruce, to be a content creator is a bit of a lifestyle. You definitely have to make a lot of sacrifices to keep the channel going to upload regularly. That means no TV in the evening. You basically work during the day doing your regular stuff and then in the evening you get behind a computer and edit until it's time to go to bed. I kind of got away from that over the course of last year, caught up on some movies and watched a few series... But I also spend a ton of time researching topics that fascinate me. And in the process I gather up knowledge that I will be using in my future videos. I got some really cool ideas that I'm looking forward to bringing to fruition. And I'm top of that I constantly kick myself in the butt for filming a lot of interesting videos but I'm not putting in the time to get them out to you guys. So basically have to make some lifestyle changes because I want the channel to grow and it will not succeed unless I put in the work and time.
I stumbled across this channel randomly and I am so glad I did. The amount of time and effort you put into your videos, the tips, shared experience and advice is outstanding. You need more subs!
Amazing you didn’t get bugs or trash in the clear , that’s always been my problem a bug decides to get in the clear then wonder around before dying lol. That truck looks great and your tips are helping a lot of people I really liked the compressor video too!!!
Thanks man, there is actually a science to not getting bugs in your paint. Especially in the summer when majority of the bugs are out, you want to paint earlier in the day, preferably in the morning before it gets really warm and bugs generally like to come out in greater numbers in the evening
I had a guy that hit a palm tree in his yard side swiping the bed. It turned out to be a bigger project then expected and 1130 pm that night the light had attracted moths and mosquitoes swirling around. He wanted to get it done so we sprayed it with clear which served as fly paper to the swarm. He said it was fine lol.
Tip for you, if you can find out the grey shade color, (varies from white to very dark grey) you can have that mixed up in base coat. That color could’ve used a lighter grey for faster coverage.
Glad to see you posting again. I was wondering when you would and when the pickup would be finished. Hopefully, we will be getting updates on the body over pickup truck you were working on.
The truck's been done for quite a while, actually it got sold about a week ago. It's been hard to find time and motivation to finish up this video. But after I got it pushed you, I'm motivated to keep on going. Hopefully this motivational feeling will stick around :-)
No worries Phillip, I know you weren't complaining :-) I worked on the last part of the video all day and into the night, finally got it uploaded around 1 AM and that's when it went live, I was so tired that I went straight to bed without re-checking everything. Made a mistake while uploading and instead of a 24 minute video I ended up with a two minutes of black screen and some music lol didn't catch it until I woke up this morning
upol primer can be used as sealer as well. helps not having to buy more material. TDS says mix ratio for sealer is 4:1:2. i like to add a little extra reducer to smoothen things out
That is true, but another thing that I like about the brand of sealer that I use is the fact that it comes in three different colors and I can mix those colors amongst themselves to get it closer to the shade of the color that I will be painting thus requiring less coats of paint and better coverage
Your videos are awesome, great job, I’m just wondering how many neighbours complains you had lately, I have A LOT just because I do mechanicals at home and my neighbours hate it! Keep the quality and don’t stop posting content!
I would have to agree with you on that, I feel that at home I'm not being rushed and can really take my time and that intern yields better end result !
Depends on how much sandpaper you have and how much paint you want to waste. Sure you can paint in your driveway, you can also cut the lawn with a pair of scissors.
I mask all wheel wells, light cavities, receiver hitchs. I do so because seeing over spray says it is bottom budget work. Masking those areas also helps contain the dirt and all of those area are ideal dirt pockets that never get fully cleaned. 23:40 Kids paint your fuel door. Lots of people, sometimes even professionals forget to paint the fuel door. LOL
I did tape the front wheel well off completely, you can tell in some shots...wheel liner was pulled out of the rear wheel well, and I washed all of the dirt out of there while wet sanding. Tail light opening also got washed out, and all of the wiring got covered with a plastic bag. I did paint the fuel door, cause If I didn't it would stand out, I just rewatched that part of the video and it does kind of stand out by looking lighter, I think sometimes camera will pickup certain things better then human eye, because I can't see the difference in person ... Video was getting waaay too long so I started to trim a lot of the fat, that's why a lot of these details didn't make it into the vid...
I love your channel man and how you breaks down everything that you are doing step by step I have been watching plenty of channels and I haven’t really understood no one channel but yours I salute 🫡 you got the game that you are given really appreciate you Brother
I did get it painted off camera, that's why once everything was reassembled there was no difference in color between the freshly painted bedside and the gas door
I normally pick a nice day when it's not going to rain and also when it's not windy or breezy. I generally do it during the week earlier in the day when most of my neighbors are away at work and such...
Could I make one tiny, small piece of constructive criticism? You should get 2004-2005 Civic Si side skirt panels. With your front and rear bumper skirts, the doors seem to be missing a little extension. That's all, lol. Other than that, I think this car looks great. He sure did have a nice truck, from the time that it got done until now he put about 30K miles on without a hitch... And the truck was sold about a week ago to make funds and room for his next project...
Believe it or not but he actually made close to 4K in profit after selling it. But I guess the only reason he was able to clear that much is because he did not have to pay to get the truck fixed, dad is just trying to help a young lad out 😇
For sure, I figured if I gave him a little boost early on hopefully that will get him going in the right direction a bit sooner than later... It's his birthday today, he's turning 19. When I was his age, I had nothing. To be honest I was actually homeless for a couple of months when I was 19, not due to me doing anything stupid or anything like that. But that's a story for another day :-)
I sprayed a mobile home that was in a trailer park. Granted, it was latex paint, but the overspray was crazy, had people 2 trailers down complaining about it.
There's definitely a lot more area to cover with a mobile home therefore I'm pretty sure that the sprayer that you used had much larger orifice that would result in larger droplet size for overspray therefore that stuff took longer to dry as it got carried away from your work area and a lot of that undried material settled down on neighbors trailers/cars and I'm sure those people were not happy :-)
I actually talked about that in the video... If you didn't skip tover most of the video then you would have been filled in on why the car was uncovered...
I've painted outside in all kinds of temperatures, in the dead of winter when it's just a couple of degrees above freezing and in the middle of the summer when it's pretty hot. Even though this video was pretty long and I kept narrating nonstop, there is just no way I can cram over 20 years of experience into a 20 minute video. As time goes on and more videos will come out I will cover different scenarios of painting such as in cold and hot environment. Although temperature plays a big role, you can easily adjust your technique and end result will be great as long as you're not trying to paint in the rain :-)
@@fix206 look forward to future videos! I see you have the Tesla in the driveway, do you by any chance know how to do diagnostic on it? I got a salvage model s I’m having issues with couple errors.
Most important step is at 9:01. I bought a hotdog concession trailer for scrap metal because someone painted a yellow tractor and over sprayed everything in sight. They could of paid the best body shop to spray that tractor vs. the damages they had to pay for.
I painted a car in acrylic in my shed , came out not bad 6 coats of clear , sanded clear 1000 to 3000 thru the grades got it flat but cannot get rid of sanding scratches and swirl marks after buffing , tried the best of quality buffing pads and compounds , tried the cheap compound and cheap buffing pads made no difference .
wow 6 coats of clear is ALOT of clear... Just a shot in the dark, but the problem you're experiencing could be due to the specific clear that you used or maybe it wasn't activated with correct amount of hardier/activator, maybe the fact that thickness of clear is so great that it's talking really long time for it to fully cure/dry and it's basicly still soft while you're trying to cut and buff it... These are just few things off of the top of my head that I can think of that could be causing the issue that you're experiencing
@@fix206 i reckon your right sbout it being soft might leave it for 6 more months and try again im in no hurry , i can do mechanical work on it , its a 1971 Australian Valiant Charger
As far as labor hrs is concerned 12hrs is the estimated time and most body guys can at least beat that by a few hrs I generally have half a day into removing a box cutting the box side of and getting the new one attached that bedside is very easy to replace. And the cost on a estimating system includes markup of the part price of over 35 percent. But yeah if you have nothing but time it is cheaper to fill with body filler but it normally is a cleaner longer lasting repair to replace the panel.
I am not a shop so I would be paying retail for the bedside therefore it would be closer to the price in the estimating software. Maybe it's just me, but I would rather do the repair then the replacement... I do have more free time then money 😆
Great job! I do have a question. When you buy a damaged vehicle like that how does the insurance company see it? Do you have a salvage title or can you put a different title on it?
Your videos are top-notch quality & extremely informative for someone looking to get into rebuilding vehicles. Can you explain what you do about the title process? I assume you're in the States. Do you do more than 5 rebuilds a year? Or are you operating as a dealer?
I am in the states, every state will have different rules and regulations when it comes to this sort of thing. In my state I can legally sell up to four cars a year without having to get dealers license. I don't go through enough cars to meet that quota. But if I was buying, rebuilding and selling them like crazy then in theory I can also start putting these cars into my wife's name, mom's/dads name and also into your kids names as long as they are over 18 years of age. This way you personally don't go over the limit...
Is overspray onto nearby objects as bad as it is with your HVLP gun (or whatever it is labeled) as it is with spray paint? High velocity, low pressure - isn't there another kind as well? For me it seems like even if I have a piece of cardboard that's at least 1' on all directions of the tiny part I need to paint, I still end up with a very lightly painted square on the concrete!
Great job! I’m looking to do my first paint job outside so I picked up a lot from this video esp with that canopy u got 👌🏼What size compressor were you using? I been researching a lot stuck between 5 stage avanti turbine or going with a 20-30 gal compressor LV setup…
I built this tool out of 3 microwave transformers and I did very detailed video on how I did it. Here is a link to that video if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/j6UgtCN5vzU/v-deo.html
They don't really say anything, I don't paint very often, but when I do, I normally paint during the week Monday - Friday, never on the weekends and on those weekdays that I paint I do it in the late morning/early afternoon when most people are at work anyways. Plus I am cool with all of my neighbors, it helps a lot to be on good terms with everyone...
Here's a tip on pouring paint from a can. If you put masking tape over the seal in the tin, it stops the paint getting into the seal. I picked that up on Junkyard Dave's channel.

This is the compressor I'm currently running and can't be happier: ua-cam.com/video/YD1dNpelSpg/v-deo.html
how many cfms does the gun require?
Please keep rebuilding cars and the videos
I got lot's filmed... Now working on editing it all...
@@fix206 nice can’t wait
what was the cool tool to pull the dents in the rear ?
I built this tool out of 3 microwave transformers and I did very detailed video on how I did it. Here is a link to that video if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/j6UgtCN5vzU/v-deo.html
How far does overspray fly? Did it get on the neighbor's houses or on other cars?
Generally, by the time the overspray makes it about 20 feet away from the paint area, it's already dry and basically just turns into dust
What do your neighbors say about the smell and overspray?
They don't really say anything, I don't paint very often, but when I do, I normally paint during the week Monday - Friday, never on the weekends and on those weekdays that I paint I do it in the late morning/early afternoon when most people are at work anyways. Plus I am cool with all of my neighbors, it helps a lot to be on good terms with everyone...
Is there any benefit to using sealer if you used a high build primer that you sanded?
Yes, I always seal all of the areas that I've primed...
Did you use 400 grit only even when sanding the debris? After sanding the debris then tack cloth it?
400 or 600 .. But I probably use 600 more often then 400
How did you avoid bugs and pollen
Prayer 🙏🏼
where did you get the program for figuring out the hours?
Thanks
I used Mitchell estimating system that we use at work
Dent puller? Did you make or purchase it
I made it... Here is a link to video of that build: ua-cam.com/video/j6UgtCN5vzU/v-deo.html
Stupid question but did you block primer and then reprime ? And then seal
Nope, I just prime once, block, seal and paint
@@fix206 awesome I may try it on my project
High IQ dude at 18:20 lol
What size compressor are you using??
I built my own air compressor and did a very detailed video on that build, here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/YD1dNpelSpg/v-deo.html
