In this video essay, Crispy discusses the cancelled Doctor Who talk show, Whovians. The show was created by Rove McManus and aired in Australia after each episode of Doctor Who from 2017-2020. The show received positive reviews from fans and critics, but unfortunately, it was cancelled due to the pandemic. There were talks of continuing the show, but with Doctor Who's new deal with Disney, the show's future remains uncertain. However, there is hope as the Whovians team ran a panel on Zoom to discuss each episode of Doctor Who: Flux. Crispy reminisces about his experience in the studio audience and his appearance on one of the episodes.

Who could never forget the entire Tim Shaw joke that ran all season 11?
BUT WAIT, THERES MORE!!
Whovians should totally be a thing on D+. Would totally make sense. Fingers crossed 🤞
It's Australian, I don't think it will
Plus I don't want Aussie Stuff on D+ Because we have ABC IVIEW!!!
@@marionbaggins It doesn't have to be an austrialian thing though, surely?
They could just film it in the UK or something and put it on D+
Wouldn't need to be country specific anymore
I never knew this existed. With nothing in Britain like this I'm kind of jealous. I love episodes like this from Crispy cos I learn something new.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Don't be too jealous. It was a show always reaching for the lowest common denominator, low hanging fruit in any situation. It was nowhere near as intelligent as literally dozens of podcasts already out there to listen to. Even when you hear people *from* Whovians on podcasts, outside of the Whovians format, they are all far more interesting, engaging, and you see their knowledge really shine.
I came to this video because Adam Richard hyped it up on the podcast. Thanks for doing this Crispy. I remember your cameo ☺️
Welcome!!
Such a good idea for a DW after show. Weirdly i have never heard of this before in the UK but it would be good if they could bring it back for Disney+
It was only for Australia.
Bajo was the funniest, he was also great on GGSP.
At 2:22 thats Will Yates in the audience, also a presenter of GGSP.
Thanks for another awesome video! It’s nice to see a light shone on Whovians. I got to go on the show in the Audience with a friend and it was incredibly fun, and everyone got the chance to talk to the hosts at the end. (Yes, I looked to see if I got in any of the shots in the episode - no luck unfortunately haha!) If I remember correctly it always seemed to get a lot of uncalled-for backlash from a few very loud critics/doctor who fans, which felt ridiculous even at the time. Those same people probably wish the show was back now and had no idea how lucky we were at the time. A shame we’re unlikely to see it again in the same form on the ABC. Having doctor who gone to disney still feels so wrong. Hopefully Whovians can regenerate into something new and still exciting!
i love the video and how much effort you put in. The only thing( which is more of something to think about) is getting more warm light on you. You look cold and blueish, other than that. love the video!!! I don't mean to be disrespectful, I just notice you blend into the background.
I wish Adam could make another season of Outland
Crazy how good the production on this production is especially for a doctor who dedicated channel lol
I had no idea Australia had a show up until 2020. I feel like we should have had one over here in Britain but instead we got one off chat shows here and there for the arrival of new Doctors, Peter Capaldi's reveal being the main one I remember. It would have benefited the franchise if we had one akin to Doctor Who Confidential after, before or in the week discussing each episode. It would have gotten the hype up for the episode and explained any confusing points with the writers. Of course, during the hated Jodie Whitaker era, having audience interaction or a talk show would definitely have made that era worse but having something with trivia and game shows involving the past episodes would have definitely been more down MY road!
Have you seen the Whovians? What did they say about the Whittaker era?
@@booradley8895 it's been some time, since I last saw the show but from what I I remember they generally liked a lot of Whittakers run but not without reservations and caveats. The fact that the show was officially licensed but not produced by the BBC gave them some room to voice criticism while still getting behind the scenes material and interviews with cast and crew of Who
@@larseich5796 Right because I just saw a video where Adam Richard was looking forward to a female doctor. Also alluded to how series 10 had set up the change by the doctor shooting the General who regenerated into a woman and even changed race. Also saying how fans hate change even though there has been numerous actors playing the doctor and basically it is a show that absolutely anything can happen and does. Finally he said how she was not on Twitter and said that is best because you going to get the haters who post horrendous things about her. Sad how true he was.
I definitely think a show like whovians could work in the UK!
@@CrispyPro Talking Who?
If Whovians is no longer on iView, is it actually available to watch anywhere at all? If not, I'm classing it as a missing episode and will be reconstructing it with telesnaps and animation
You need to bring it back, Crispy #crispyforshowrunner
They have done this for all the new Star Trek shows and it’s such a fun idea. They could totally bring it back. With trek it’s hosted by Star Trek actor wil Wheaton and Whovian show could get an ex companion or go through a few guest stars
Fantastic video Crispy! I used to love Whovians - as you said, it was hugely entertaining, and so uniquely Australia. It's a shame that it only started running from Series 10 onwards. I would have loved to hear what Rove and the others had to say about some of the earlier seasons and Doctors.
Also, kudos for getting an interview with Adam Richards! I found his comments very insightful. I can't quite agree with the notion that the ABC treated Doctor Who 'abominably', as they've had budget cuts and were also hamstrung with the timeslots (once Doctor Who moved to Sundays in the UK, they could only show it on Mondays, and had to work around the 7pm news, and the 7.30 show. However, I do agree 100% with his other comments about less Australians having access to the show, once it airs on Disney+.
Final thought: We haven't had a full series of Doctor Who since early 2020!!! (I'm not counting 'Flux', as that was only 6 episodes).
I loved Whovians, but I that bloke they got to replace Adam turned the household off the show. We just didn't find him funny, the cringe was too huge to swallow.
Hey Crispy. I recorded every Whovians ep if you’d like the footage of you from the show.
I would love to see the show
@@OfficialTomMason I’m not entirely sure the ABC would like if I uploaded them haha however here’s a link to a segment from the very first episode of the show (hopefully it’s not region-locked)

Yes please! DM on twitter
I'd also love to see this show, if you can somehow email it to me
I started watching Whovians during Season 10 of DW and I remember how it enhanced moments like John Simms Master returning. Maybe Whovians could come back in a format like Backpocket where they have a live twitch show weekly or something
What a brilliant suggestion!
John Simms return was funny because they showed my reaction (which we didn’t know was being recorded because as Crispy said, we watched it just before the taping) on the actual show
I remember Whovians! I got to be in the live audience for an episode and it was so much fun! I did find that sometimes they would tend towards easy jokes rather than more thorough analysis which they would do on Doctor Who the Fan Show.
Mate what an awesome insight into the whovians show as a long times whovian myself it was awesome to get a idea of why whovians is not on anymore, I had the chance to talk to rove last year when he came into retail store I work at and I was able to briefly talk about whovians and asked “if whovians was coming back” and he said they were working on it 😎👍🏻
As always a great episode and I hope we can see whovians again soon
Oh wow! I wonder what Rove has cooking...
@@CrispyPro I know right let’s hope it’s the new whovian show 😎👌🏻
I was wondering about this! It just sort of didn't come back and there didn't seem to be any information to whether it was officially cancelled or just stopped happening.
I noticed the very last season they stopped getting exclusive extras, Chibnall just didn’t care…
How dare they that was an Aussie Fan Show!!!
If you want a copy of your episode, let me know which ep, I may be able to get it for you …
Whoa… _Bajo_ was part of the panel?! 🤯
Anytime Rove Mcmanus loses a job...Humanity wins. Bros an absolute flog
The real whovians knows what Totally Doctor Who is
Totally!!
i thought this show was a fever dream
Doctor who needs the equivalent of talking dead you know where they recap the latest episode and talk about what could happen in the next one that sort of thing like an aftershow
Whovians was the best solely for the Tim Shaw jokes that went over an entire generation’s heads
Does crispy not work for whoculture anymore? I swear he only made one video.
He could have been a guest contributor for that video he did
Yes I am! There are two videos of mine up already. And I've filmed two more on the way hehe.
i remember when series ten was on (i was nine years old) my parents would allow me to stay up late so i could watch whovians after. i always assumed that they just got fed up with chibnall
I've been saying there should be a show similar to this for years. How come I've never even heard of this?😮
It's Australian
pretty cool that the future showrunner was in that show #crispyforshowrunner
Being an American doctor who fan we just got the doctor who episodes and a few seconds of behind the scenes footage when it would go to commercial breaks bbc America had no after show the only thing America had has that’s comparable is the show talking dead that was the same type format but about the walking dead and fear the walking dead if they could get the show going again I would love for it to be available to watch in America
Talking dead is such a good title for that haha
oh man I loved whovians. it's the reason I got twitter, wildly enough. I was so annoyed I never got to go be in the audience, being nowhere near where any abc stuff is filmed. I miss it, tbh, but the fact that new dr who isn't gonna be able outside of d*sney here is a major roadblock. I definitely agree that the abc mistreated the show, and that it was definitely a budget issue. but the fact that series eleven premiered LATER than advertised in order for bluey to premiere without being actually mentioned in the programming (something that annoys me to this day) and that it essentially got shoved to a weekday slot when it's been one of the major sunday shows since the start of new who - and iirc in the eighties it got a similar fate and there were a lot of complaints about that, especially since I know that it got replaced with the god awful monkey tv show. but even still, that doesn't mean the abc should've had it taken away. it's more a problem that d*sney has a monopoly on it now, imo.
I miss Whovians.
Australia has television!?
@@ihavebecomeatreehelp852 oh yeah they got antennas on their tails don’t they.
@@ihavebecomeatreehelp852 I thought that was Tellytubbies?
A CRAZY CONCEPT!
We have to flip the TV over since we get the signal upside down but yeah we do 😂😂
Whovians could be on a UA-cam channel
I couldnt find it anywhere!
Whovians???
Oh yeahhhhh
Whovians was not my cup of tea. It was fluff and childish but worse, was not funny. I don't expect a chat show to be serious and stiff but this felt like a kids show. That and the fact it never had the courage to call out crap DW when they saw it made it rather a pathetic waste of time. As an Australian I am glad this show was axed.
I'm disappointed that Disney will have exclusive control; I don't and won't be subscribing to Disney in any of its iterations. Goodbye, Dr. Who.
Disney just have distribution control outside of UK and Ireland.
Why don't you creat your own online show with other whotubers
Now there is an idea...
I really didn't like the whovians series it was stupid and not very good plus the ABC FROM MY childhood isn't the same and the ABC now
