Capaldi brought a gravitas to his more serious moments as the Doctor while also being batshit insane when he wasn't being serious. Its very hard to get a decent mix of the two and he did it amazingly
I always felt like the 12th Doctor was who the 9th would have been had he been around longer. That’s what I loved so much about him. He was utterly different and yet seemed to tapping into the pain and rage of number 9.
Yeah I grew up with Ten but Twelve was my doctor. Capaldi was intoxicating to watch even when the episode wasn't the best. I could watch Capaldi explaining concepts of time travel for hours and I wish we saw more of him.
I'm with you. I thought the writing was awful for all of his seasons but Capaldi himself was a magnificent Doctor. Not my favorite but definitely fantastic.
Capaldi is one of the top ones. Always was, but he was a victim early on of ageism with fans unhappy of the change to an older doctor from the younger, "sexier" doctors. Capaldi gave the Doctor probably the freshest change in personality compared to the others and some of his lines were absolutely brilliant ("...she's my carer. She cares, so I don't have to" is still one of the best comic lines I've heard in Dr. Who).
I think the reason that the reputation has changed is because it works better as a complete product where you can see all the character arcs and motivations. 12 being all grumpy in series 8 seems far better in hindsight as you see it as part of his arc rather than when initially watching, you could just think he’s really angry and h likeable. I prefer angrier, more grumpy characters in general because it means nice gestures and moments stand out.
There are episodes I did not really like as a kid, counting back and realising I was a kid is particularly insane, but I trudged on and upon rewatching the episodes I really enjoy them.
I agree. When it was still airing I hated most of series 9, When i got to Heaven Sent and Hell Bent the season started to become a lot better. Some of the weaker eps of that season are strengthen by the final 2 eps.
yeah, tbh, that's what I was thinking too regarding matt smith's era I mean, series 7 was not very good but as I've heard, there were many conflicts with productions and the 50th was a nightmare to realize for Moffat, so I understand it was that way. Both Smith and Capaldi's era are deconstruction of the doctor and the show, mostly in the years priors. I didn't understand it at the time but it's actually very reflective, and Capaldi's era is in some way moffat reflecting on his previous era too. And I think that's something we lost with Chibnall's era. The series stopped being in conversation with the era that it followed.
@erin_3569 It just dawned on me that there is an alternate universe where Capaldi only ever played the War Doctor, and he did a fantastic if not even superior performance in the role. But that universe was robbed the gift of him as the 12th doctor. Maybe they weren't cursed with the Chibnall era, though. It's weird to think how things might have played out differently just for scheduling reasons...
That's a really good point and reminds me of what happened with Colin Baker's time as the Doctor. It was always intended for him to have a character arc, probably the first time the series had ever tried consciously do this with an incarnation of the Doctor. I remember when the idea was being kicked around and my issue was that I already had issues with the way JNT was running the series and how what was getting on the air was being perceived by the audience. It was NOT the time to try something that experimental, particularly with the character of the Doctor. JNT thought it was the perfect time because he was confident that even if the audience disliked the new Doctor, which he fully expected them to, he'd have the time to show where he as going with it because he knew he didn't have to worry about cancellation. Even if he lost viewers, he knew the majority would stay with the series and that once he was able to do his big reveal, they'd love it and not only bring those viewers back but gain new viewers thanks to this plot arc. I had my doubts because of how the Turlough arc had been botched. Turlough's original arc and character was supposed to be something much darker and more dramatic. What we got was a whiney Sting impersonator with a red dye-job running away from his space pimp-daddy who liked to wear a seagull plucked out of an oil spill on his head. The second I saw Colin's costume, knowing at least the basic of what JNT had planned, I knew that idea was doomed.
Matt Smith sure was upon the initial fart in the wind announcement of his casting but after Eleventh Hour aired well well well who the fuck is David Tennant anyway :)
I hated the jarring difference between the young, whimsical Eleven, who was warm and loving, showed that he cared, fell in love with River and cared deeply about his companions. Having Twelve regen as an old, grumpy, uncaring, narcissist who hated humans, hated Earth, DGAF about his companion was an instant turnoff for a lot of Whovians. Moffat eventually made him more likeable but it was too little too late for a lot of us.
Honestly out of all the doctors David Tennent’s 10th incarnation clicked with me right out of the gate. For the 9th Doctor It took the 50th anniversary episode for Christopher Eccleston to finally warm up to me. I didn’t like his run on first viewing back in the day but he deserved more than 1 season. Took a season for Matt Smith to grow on me but he was amazing out of the gate. 12th eh I felt weird about that one and probably the only one that follows this take. First season never sold me on him and I never really got the appreciation for Capaldi till recently. 13 I have always loved. Her doctor is brilliant but she never got the writing nor the chance all the others got to prove her self. It was sad she never got an episode written by RTD For context been a fan since 2010/11 and first ep was waters of mars.
I adore the 12th Doctor because he added back the more stern, aloof and alien qualities. I hated the tenth Doctor flirting and kissing people, just felt wrong to me for a superior alien being to be behaving in a very human way. Heaven Sent is modern Who at its best, just a stunning piece of television and a phenomenal performance from Peter Capaldi. 12 is the best modern Who Doctor. Great video.
I only have two favorite doctors, and he is one of them. Don’t understand any “hatred, “and I honestly don’t care. I got some of the most emotionally gratifying Doctor Who moments from him, and I will scream it to the heavens.

Always been a Capaldi appreciator. He was the very best. Capaldi was for a different audience than the one it cultivated with Tennant and Smith. I genuinely think that many fans were too young to understand what made Moffat and Capaldi so excellent together. I still hear a lot of hatred towards Clara "because she's mean," totally misunderstanding the twisted and beautiful relationship she had with the Doctor.
As an American who is super out of touch w the fan base, I loved Capaldi’s tenure as it was airing and was very surprised to hear a lot of people considered it low tier. He was just so fun and talented and I loved his dynamics with all his companions especially Jenna Coleman but also the other two charmed me. And blind Capaldi arc was top tier I’d love for them to revisit something like that and force the doctor to have to adapt.

Capaldi was the best Doctor and his era should get more love. Clara was also the best Companion, especially for 12, and their chemistry are what made a lot of his era so good. Heaven Sent wouldn't be the masterpiece it is if the Doctor wasn't grieving over the loss of Clara and how he spent 4 and a half billion years trying to break out of his confession dial to find a way to bring her back from the dead. In time 12's era should be appreciated more and more.
Great video. As an old school fan of the series I thought that Capaldi was necessary. The fandom of New-who forgot about Eccleston and had the idea of the Doctor’s persona as a Tenant and Smith which is understandable. The Doctor had become a boyfriend. Which he had never been before but RTD added this ingredient to the character which even in the 60th celebration episodes he has never let go of. To me Capaldi was like a classic Doctor updated. I honestly think the reason it was panned at the time is that it wasn’t Tenant. I’m not saying their wasn’t dodgy episodes but mainly it was because a certain vocal part of the fandom didn’t fancy the lead actor. Put DT in there they would’ve loved it. I think the respect that his era has now mustered is probably because of the chibnall era but also because of the some disappointment with the new latest era. The specials were entertaining and nostalgic enough but we leap back to that RTD/ Doctor/ Boyfriend/ Bestie thing at the forefront apposed to the thrill of adventure and Doctor being the smartest in the room.
Ok. I mean, given that the companion who Tennant went back to was Donna Noble, and she was explicitly the 10 companion who didn't fancy the Doctor, and apparently according to that throwaway line in Wild Blue Yonder, always thought he was probably gay anyway, I don't get that as a particular criticism of the recent 14th doctor specials. But given that Tennant played 14 as a more experienced version of 10 who is apparently more in touch with his feelings I guess I can see how you can read across criticism of bits of 10 you didn't like into his performance as 14. As a classic fan, I can absolutely see Capaldi as a modernised classic Doctor.
@@paulhammond6978 Think of it this way. If I was to explain my enthusiasm for a TV show that has lasted for 60 years and showed a none fan those specials. Would that person walk away with a sense of why this show has lasted for the decades it has. Did it communicate the history or longevity of one of the longest running tv shows in history. See I didn’t think it did. As I said I enjoyed them but that could’ve been done 5 years ago with the same impact. Also I do like David Tenant and his portrayal as the Doctor but it’s difficult to describe why that portrayal can be irksome. A long time ago in a different life I worked with Colin Baker, this was during the wilderness years in the late 90’s. He was saying that the appeal of Doctor Who at that time was it attracted fans who were the outsiders. Not the trendies or coolest and I remember when enjoying Doctor Who was considered sad by the media. It’s a bit like you favorite underground band suddenly gets a pop hit and becomes popular and then they start to change to fit in and gain the respect of the general populace. As an original fan you feel a little left behind because you were there when hardly anybody had heard of them. David Tenant was a bit like that. Although I admit he was necessary for the show to carry on because audiences change but the good-looking, snogging, crying romantic hero wasn’t the Doctor for many. The flirty, suggestive eye brow raises and Billy pipers slightly parted mouth and lip licking was a big change. The Doctor became a romantic a sexual figure. I just think that if I had to explain to a non-Who watcher what was great about Doctor Who after those specials I would struggle.

You kind of lost me on the first draft but this response made me see what you meant with a lot more clarity, the thing Twelfth says at the end of the very first episode of Season 8 even alludes to that, "I'm not your boyfriend". I think I agree with you on that, tho I would personally dial down this as the de facto reason since it was a convoluted mush of problems and changes in both core characteristics and character portrayals that made the show a lot different and disconnected from it's previous iterations, but also gave it the new and cool face necessary to revitalize everything, thus contributing to Capaldi's fall from and slow but fair return to grace in the eyes of the fans. I'm twenty myself so definitely not old enough to have had any contact with classic or new Doctor Who in release time but as I went on and watched both, what I think about Capaldi and his era is that it feels the closest to amend the gap between the new and classic who in terms of just overall format, followed closely by Eccleston's Doctor. The deep seriousness of their arcs, the grey morality all around and the constant internal debate paired with whimsy, wonderful sense of adventure are so reminiscing of the Old Doctor, even when modernized and with cool new spins attached to it. One of the core things - to me - that made Capaldi's era memorable but feels like it would hinder it's popularity a lot on real time watching tho is that his arcs are simply better seen as a whole picture, it's not a grandiose spectacle like the stuff with the Silence or the prophecy of Ten, it's very introspective and linear, a real and subdued growing process that's hard to make appealing when there's only one episode per week.
You nailed it. Watching 12 one episode at a time with a week in between was hard for me. Binge-watching on dvd totally changed my opinion of him and his era. I adore him now.
Clara was a beautiful companion - I loved her. Capaldi's era I have written elsewhere. Simply brilliant. Capaldi was dropped by the young (mostly) who have now grown up and can appreciate his amazing performance. His final scenes with Clara is some of the genuinely most emotionally engrossing ever aired on the show. Smith and Capaldi made for the perfect combination or two-sided coin. I agree season eight was off-putting for many and seasons 9 and ten were great! In the end Capaldi's moral questioning and behaviour in the end proved him to be a Doctor with a selflessness and huge two hearts. I also agree with season nine's opening. It was still the same Doctor with yes obvious changes - that does happen in life. There was time between seasons when he would have had decades of experiences. People do not stay in their midlife crisis forever - it’s a stage. Repeat I LOVE CLARA! BTW season ten is amazing for not having a single bad episode. I have agreed and shared every point you make. That rarely happens in my experience. Steven Moffat needs to appreciate much more deeply than beyond his brilliant contributions before taken over the reins. His Capaldi episodes were vastly overall wonderfully written stories. This was imo an exceptionally insightful, very well-articulated and explained UA-cam post. 10/10 for loving 11 and for making an awesome post. It was hard at the time to have loved these seasons when everyone was criticising them. I never knew it was that much hated though. How wrong an audience can be. How great to see brilliance now recognised.
I was really attached to Matt Smith's 11th Doctor,and since I'd only really just gotten into the show when he left,it felt like he'd left the show too soon. Despite the fact I was still grieving for 11,I still quite enjoyed 12's characterization right from the beginning. He was the most curmudgeonly and misanthropic Doctor we've ever seen,and therefore the one with which I personally identify.
Matt Smith's last season was pretty poor, and season 6 was also difficult to follow for casual viewers. I think by the time it got to Peter a lot of people had already dropped off sadly (meaning they never met Missy!)
Yeah I couldn’t help but chuckle at that. It’s half the reason why I was ok with able body Davros. In the child in need special. I hope in this new RTD era he isn’t completely retconned. To watch him slowly become the Davros we all know and love would be amazing.
I loved Capaldi as the Doctor. The gruffness of the first Doctor, with the softness of the 11th. Loved Capaldi’s conversation with the person in the alley, in the first episode. Trying to figure out why he was given that face, and the attack eyebrows. 😂
I remember going from Matt smith which was my first doctor, to begin with I thought capaldis doctor was just grumpy and impersonal, but with time capaldi grew on me and he’s now one of my favorite doctors with smith and tennant
I thought Peter Capaldi would make a great Doctor back in 1996, on the strength of his performance in, 'Neverwhere', (ditto Paterson Joseph), and I was not disappointed. I felt that we got a series too long of Clara, and a series too short of Bill, who definitely was a breath of fresh air.
I loved Capaldi. He had some of the most powerful performances I’ve seen in the series. However, that said, I was constantly annoyed by Clara, “Me”, and Nardo…but then, I never happy unless I have something to complain about. 😂
It really is marvellous that this era is receiving the love it deserves. Some excellent acting combined with brilliant writing led to a high note for the show.
I really enjoyed Peter Capaldi's portrayal of the Doctor. Right from the word go. (Except maybe for that "where did this face come from" sequence which was a bit silly). I wished he'd stayed for another 3 years and Moffat as well.
I absolutely loved Peter Capaldi during his era. Everyone around me was talking about how they stopped watching because of it, whilst I was I loving it. I’m genuinely so glad that the series is getting the admiration it deserves. I’ve always said, Peter Capaldi is my favourite doctor, Matt Smith is my doctor, and David Tennant is the best doctor. But I love all 3 equally

I always loved Capaldi. I was super hyped when I found out he was The Doctor. So much Pertwee, but so much Capaldi acting chops. The guy was brilliant.
I honestly think the main reason is Capaldi himself, he is probably the best actor to play the Doctor since Baker, and he clearly worked incredibly hard to embody the character in all its complexity, making sure that everything he did was built upon everything that had gone before, right back to Hartnell - you can see every previous doctor in there somewhere, and he has the same reverence for the character and the show as the long term fans do. Whittaker was not engaged like that and was therefore not engaging. Chibnall treated the show like his own personal plaything, and it seems the horrifically self-indulgent RTD 2.0 is doing the same.
I enjoyed the entire Capaldi run. The sonic specs and guitar were a bit meh. But the dark to lighter arc for him was great for his growth. The gravitas in his speeches is great. And he gets to display a lot of range.
I said this recently in another video but much like you said I believe that there are many, sometimes overlaping, reasons why people don't like this era, some more legitimate than others: There's people who hate Clara, some hate that the Doctor is not a romantic young guy, others hate the darker tone, some don't like Danny, or they find the Hybrid storyline pointless, most were already getting tired of Moffat's approach to writing Doctor Who... But ultimately, even for people who don't have big issues with any or all of these points, I think what happened is that this era is the most highbrow sci-fi of all modern who, raising the bar and not always being able to meet it in the most satisfying way. I've always found this era to be the best and more interesting one of all, and if opinion is shifting about it I couldn't be more happy. It doesn't always stick the landing and it has some actually bad episodes, but I never found those to be anywhere close to show-ruining. In fact I'd say it's even more consistently good than Eleven's era.

Capaldi was my favorite Doctor from the moment he stepped out of the Tardis in Deep Breath. And every episode after that cemented his position as my favorite. Twelve reminds me so much of Seven, who was my previous favorite. I really don’t understand why he didn’t get the love he deserved while he was there. Sure there were a few less than stellar episodes in his seasons, but jeez, does no one remember the other duds, especially is seasons 2, 3, 6 & 7? In my opinion, the only BAD episode in the Capaldi era was Kill the Moon. And that was better than 90% of the Chibnall era…
You are bang on that it's Chibnall. The show was always hit and miss but Moffat needed a break really. I felt like 12 was characterised better after his first series and I personally didn't like Clara. Chibnall era wasn't a decline it felt like the show was genuinely dead.
I always felt like the Moffat / Capaldi era was a great alternative to the Mat Smith era, darker, yet still had humour and depth to it. I guess it made it even more special considering what has followed. Now only a gold fish will think of these new seasons as being special, well they are, they are just so very very very special, not. And the thing I love the most was that Capaldi was always a Dr Who fan, and did want to play this part, while those that followed didn't have a clue about the shows past, and even less know how to be THE DOCTOR... Ah R.I.P Doctor Who.

my issue with Capaldi Era is the writing, and how it started how the wrong path pushing messages over story. Capaldi himself is fantastic and would love to hear audio stories of him back in the role.
WTF are you talking about??? Doctor who has always pushed messages. Episode 4 and 5 of the revival directly comments on the Iraq war. Episode 7 discusses the media barons in the UK. Rise of the cyberman/age of steel deals directly with the digitisation and the increasing prevalence of the internet. Torchwood is lead by somebody who practically screams NF voter. The character has also always been a socialist and a leftie. If you're complaint is that the character went woke it's a show created by a woman and an Indian it has always been "woke".
That's not at all what happened during Capaldi's tenure. You might have been seeing things that weren't there. Moffat was a lot less political than RTD.

I loved him as the Doctor. Having seen him in The Thick of It, I had looked forward to a Doctor who didn't take crap. He is hundreds of years old, after all and should show some moral ambiguity and impatience, not just overweening confidence. He was let down by some truly bad scripts (I'm looking at you, Kill the Moon!) but his take on the character was wonderful. When I look at favorite quotations from the series, most of them were delivered by Capaldi. Glad to see his tenure is being re-examined.
I always loved Capaldi once he started, he was a bit older and that took a little adjusting to, but still he's my favorite Doctor. His demeanor was great as even he himself seemed a little confused as to what he was. But the first time I watched Heaven Sent I had chills.
Peter Capaldi's Doctor was hated? Really??? That's too bad. I thought he was great. Even if the story wasn't awesome (and it often felt like the writing wasn't up to snuff), Peter Capaldi's Doctor always managed to be fantastic in it. That's not something I would be able to say about Jodie Whittaker... who was also bogged down by less than great writing.

I loved Capaldi's Doctor. The sass was fantastic, but he seemed layered as a Doctor. I felt like he was that mature, "professor" that has realized what's he done and also has to think about it. He's damaged and tired of what happens in the Galaxy.
Frankly there was just a long season break at some point and doctor who fell off my radar, and when I came back all the capaldi seasons were out and I instantly fell in love. Also Clara is great if you don’t remember anything about season 7.
I think another (maybe not massive, but relatively significant) part about why this massive turn around occurred was that people grew up. Capaldi was my doctor growing up. Now that my age group is also a more vocal force on the internet, people who grew up with him are showing their appreciation for his era. I feel like people forget that Doctor who is technically a kids show first, and kids love watching the show. As those kids grow up, they bring their love for the era of the show they grew up with. It's why, despite the hate towards the Chibnall era now, I believe there will eventually be a renaissance in appreciation for the 13th doctor once the kids who grew up watching her become more vocal on the internet.
there are many people who love Jodie era, but chibnal still fucked it up Jodie did as well as she could, i like her, but she's not good as the doctor. You can't feel the thing when she's mad like you can with male doctors, maybe that's just her, she literally can't be mad and intimidating. She just looks like a mad woman who can't do anything

Nah I highly doubt Jodie era will have a renaissance. The poor writing and forgettable episodes in both series 11 and 12 means there is nothing to look back on fondly. Flux is the closest series to get a renaissance. On its own, that era will not make a comeback but RTD has been rewriting the Flux and timeless chid. Overall fixing the mess Chibnal left him. In special 2 we see the impacts of the flux, something that was all but reversed by the end of the Series 13. Special 3 replanted the seed of doubt over the doctors proper identity. Special 4 tells us the doctor is still working though the fact the he may not be who he thinks he is actually writing the timeless child and not just saying “is god” and leaving it at that. So yeah sure maybe public prospective on the timeless child may change its not because it was good but because it was rewritten to be good in series 14 and beyond. Edit: I think i wanna point out that while I jumped on the hate bandwagon with series 8 which impacted my opinion of 9. I watched the episodes of Series 11 and did not enjoy a single one. That led to me skipping series 12 which I also did because of the piss poor marketing this era had. I returned for the flux and watched that at release but while being the best she ever got it was still mediocre. That’s all to say I disliked Chibnal before it was trendy to dislike Chibnal.
Exactly! I think what's so wonderful about Doctor Who is that a lot of people will grow up with a specific era and Doctor and that will be THEIR Doctor Who and that's really special!

I just finished watching all of the 12th Doctor seasons. I was one I’d those who found Capaldi “meh.” I made that 180-degree move by the time Bill showed up. And wow…Bill. One of the best Companions out there.
I always liked Capaldi as the Doctor and Clara is my favourite companion of the NuWho era. It seems to me that people either prefer Tennant/Smith or Eccelston/Capaldi. Moffat is also the best showrunner of the new era. Doctor Who finished when Moffat and Capaldi left.
I haven't changed my mind about the Peter Capaldi years at all... I thought it was brilliant at the time and I still do! I didn't care for the sonic sunglasses or guitar, but I can forgive minor things like that when it's offset by a fantastic character, well acted with great stories. I also really liked Clara.
i actually already love the chibnall era much more than when it aired. some of it is goofy and underbaked but you can find someone who says that about every season/era. the stories are fun silly sci-fi nonsense, Jodie kills it, the new designs feel intentionally more nostalgic and less early 2000s edgy (Cybermen), and Flux is a wild ride and a hoot! comparison has always led to negative first impressions in dr who and I definitely hope people step back and take it for what it is. also there's a talking frog
Ive been watching Doc since the Baker days and Peter is one of the few Doctors i liked instantly. Baker being the other. The problem i had with Peters run was Cara, the one companion who was away of the Doctor past lives in a way no other companion could be. Acting like she had no clue what was going on with him. It story choices with her character that put me off at times
I loved Capaldi from the get-go tbh. I was hesitant because of the age thing, only being a fan of new who, but he won me 'round in his first episode and became my favourite Doctor. I felt the same about Chris, David and Matt. For me, Jodie and Ncuti aren't really my vibe, I just didn't get the "now this is the Doctor" feeling on the initial episode of theirs. Something just felt missing. Guess everyone has different tastes, and theirs are just as valid as mine is, so no hate on people who dislike Capaldi.
Those who complained during the Capaldi era about "bad writing" had no idea what they were in store for once Chibnall took over. Kinda makes you rethink all that Moffat hate, doesn't it?
It took me a long while to warm up to 12th. There was Heaven Sent, but The Husbands of River Song was the episode that made me fall in love with his character.
Capaldi is my all time favourite doctor. He is in many ways the definitive doctor, and I absolutely love Series 8 and 10. Series 9 is quite mixed but it still ha Heaven sent. He is absolutely perfect in series 8 and absolutely fantastic in Series 10. His arc pared with Missy's arc is so fucking good.
I actually think his first series was his best after that it’s so inconsistent not Peter Capaldi fault bbc didn’t have faith in a darker more mature direction
I liked his Doctor when he was the harsher Doctor he started out as. Then it was like they were just giving him scripts intended for Matt Smith. Overall I would say that Peter Capaldi's run had far worse episodes than Jodie Whittaker's but the difference was that he was never bad in them.
Kill the moon remains the only episode I switched off mid episode. People say JW had "poor scripts". PC had scripts that become so complex NASA would take a decade to work out. As his time on the show progressed Clara became the Doctor he was the companion. I feel sorry for him, His dour take was dropped after the 1st season to a mid life crisis Dad. Moffat let him down badly. His opening episode was just a total mess, Missy for me remains one of the best characters, One stare from Michelle and its time to change the underwear.
I always loved Capaldi, as he was my first doctor. At the time I just liked the aliens and the sci-fi but was I got older and watched the rest of NuWho, I realised he is the best Doctor for portraying his moral instability.

Honestly I haven’t watched Dr. Who since Capaldi. Series 9 is where my opinion on him changed. And then when he became a professor in series 10, well that was one of my favorite portrayals of the Doctor ever. Seriously most of my favorite scenes from Doctor Who are Capaldi just giving monologues. Like his actual college class lecture he gave, the one on the bootstrap paradox, the one about the perfect camouflage, and then finally his speech about war and consequences. Matt Smith may still be my favorite Doctor. But pretty much all of my favorite scenes are Capaldi’s. (David Tennant was my favorite actor to play the doctor though) (Also, the only reason I haven’t watched Jodie Whittaker’s doctor yet is because it started while I was at college)
For the exact same reason that many of the Jodie Whittaker episodes were unwatchable - the writing was ghastly. On top of that the show runner decided with Capaldi to create an unlikable Doctor who would soften and become likeable as the series went on'; but by that time everyone had stopped watching. This choice was was doubly baffling because this is exactly what they tried with Colin Baker as the 6th Doctor and it killed the original series.
Capaldi’s Doctor was very good. From being a fan of Classic Who, I was used to older Doctors and thought it was time for one again. The best episode was with Robin Hood. The humor would only have worked with (among the NuWho Doctors) Capaldi’s Doctor, because he was cynical and didn’t believe in heroes.
Great video. But why do people keep saying this? (8:54) Why would The Doctor and Clara ever do something evil? Why would they destroy Gallifrey? I've always assumed that it's like how Ashilldr/Me said later. That the Hybrid is gonna be the Doctor and MISSY (/the Master). The "lover of chaos". If they ever became friends, it could quickly go downhill like that! Which is why I loved that arc in series 10 so much. We came THAT close. It makes the most sense, logically. And then Chibnall came around and retconned and ruined EVERYTHING. He really pulled a Rian Johnson on 10 seasons of established Doctor Who....
If he'd kept his series 8 persona throughout it would've been something unique but the fact that he begins to heal in series 9 and naturally evolves in series 10 makes him such a loveable and relatable main character. I detested his attitude in series 8 when I was 14, but 10 years of life experience changed my outlook and elevates his character arc in a realistic way. He was The Doctor when I needed him most.
"i'll bring unit, I'll bring the Zygons. Give me a minute, I'll bring the Daleks and the Cybermen" i couldn't imagine any other doctor saying that, which is one reason why Capaldi was always one of my favorite doctors. Capaldi's doctor felt like it was the doctor, but the mask was slipping, the countless years of anger and horror have started to bleed through, leaving a man that will sacrifice/destroy anything to save the one he took responsibility for.
I'd always loved capaldis doctor straight from the beginning although I was a bit unhappy with series 9 until I rewatched it. Now I absolutely adore his whole era.
Right you joke about Chibnall’s bit being looked on fondly in the future; I’ve actually rewatched a load of it recently and I was pleasantly surprised! Look there are some massive glaring issues from the start, season 11 is the worst season ever, there were too many companions, and yeah the writing was weak in a lot of places. BUT - Jodie did the best she could with the material and I really liked her as the doctor - Graham was fabulous throughout and I wish we’d gotten to know Ryan more (still not fond of Yaz) - all the festive episodes are solid. Really enjoyed them all. - Season 13 was actually really good on a second watch! Surprisingly so! It felt like a farewell tour, hitting up all the old favourites - the Master was amazing every time they were on screen. I’m including the Rasputin dance. No it doesn’t hold up to the RTD or best of the Moff runs, but looking back at it, especially knowing that the next run will be hugely different, it had some really great moments and they need to be celebrated as much as the rest of it is torn apart (looking at you, Pting). And fyi, I quite liked the timeless child, I wish it was followed up better.
12 is my Doctor. Loved him the second I saw Deep Breath. The character development, acting and speeches. And, unironically, Hell Bent is my favourite episode of all time.
Yeah it’s magic isn’t it. It feels like really grown-up story telling. Some of the most emotional Doctor moments ever - seeing the Doctor’s rage following the events of Face the Raven and Heaven Sent is masterful character writing.
I'm so glad that I never got involved in community discourse back when Capaldi was the Doctor. I had like one interaction with a fan who wasn't me back then and I was genuinely shocked by how much they disliked Series 9 and Capaldi as a whole (as opposed to me, who already at that point considered Capaldi to be my favourite).

The Moffatt era is easily the closest in spirit to the classic 20th century series. Even his Doctors’ costumes look “Doctorish” in the classic mould, in a way that the costumes from the RTD and Chibnall eras very self-consciously don’t. Both RTD (in both of his tenures) and Chibnall were preoccupied with “modernizing” Doctor Who. Moffatt was much more obviously a fan of the original series, and understood its DNA.
The Doctor - as the character was codified in the twentieth century - can be many things. But “cool”, and “hot” are categorically not amongst them, unless they are of the “so uncool it’s cool” or “weird-hot” variety. Conventionally handsome/pretty, and fashionably attired are two attributes that would have been understood to be off the table from the start, by anybody with an understanding of what the show was, and what made it unlike other shows. The Doctor does NOT put hair gel in his hair, or paint his fingernails, or have his ear pierced, or show off his pecs with a plunging neckline, or wear copious amounts of jewelry, or eyeliner - all of which RTD/Chibnall “Doctors” have done. His dress-sense is strictly Victorian/Edwardian. He’s weird and eccentric, but not in a contrived way. His sexuality, such as it is, is best summed up by one of Tom Baker’s best lines, written by Douglas Adams: “you’re a beautiful woman, probably” - complete disinterest in the whole concept. The New series has NEVER gotten the pitch right, but of all the Doctors in the current era, Moffatt/Capaldi came closest to capturing it, closely followed by Moffatt/Smith.

@fromchomleystreet well there's that but there's also a return to more educational historical stories which takes the show back to it's roots in the 60s! There's also the classic monsters - Sontarans return to a look similar to The Time Warrior, the Sea Devils return with their classic design, the Cybermen redesign brings back The Invasion helmet design and its hard to explain but I think the general vibe of the era feels more in tune with the classic era than the RTD and Moffat eras. Also: Power of the Doctor as a whole is just a massive love letter to Doctor Who, particularly the classic series with classic Doctors and companions galore!
I've always wanted to get into Doctor who and the lockdown helped me get into it. I watched everything from 9 to 13 in one go. I'm honestly surprised people consider 12 as a bad doctor cause for me he is easily one of the best ones there. Also 9 is extremely underrated.
Capaldi is my favourite nuwho Doctor because he took all my flaws as a blunt AF psychotic and turned them into virtuous qualities that could be charming and even helpful. He also had my favourite incidental music theme which I feel speaks of struggle and sadness as well as triumph and joy in a way the previous Doctors' themes don't.
Loved the final Capaldi season, it's like they pulled out all of the weird and wonderful ideas that they'd had and thought 'that'll never fly with the BBC, or maybe even the fans', and bunged them all into one season knowing they were all leaving anyway. This resulted in some of the most obscure yet fun stories we've seen in Doctor Who.
Capaldi brought a gravitas to his more serious moments as the Doctor while also being batshit insane when he wasn't being serious. Its very hard to get a decent mix of the two and he did it amazingly

Yeah I grew up with Ten but Twelve was my doctor. Capaldi was intoxicating to watch even when the episode wasn't the best. I could watch Capaldi explaining concepts of time travel for hours and I wish we saw more of him.
I'm with you. I thought the writing was awful for all of his seasons but Capaldi himself was a magnificent Doctor. Not my favorite but definitely fantastic.

Capaldi is one of the top ones. Always was, but he was a victim early on of ageism with fans unhappy of the change to an older doctor from the younger, "sexier" doctors.
Capaldi gave the Doctor probably the freshest change in personality compared to the others and some of his lines were absolutely brilliant ("...she's my carer. She cares, so I don't have to" is still one of the best comic lines I've heard in Dr. Who).
Also: "You've made an error! A boyfriend error!"

I think the reason that the reputation has changed is because it works better as a complete product where you can see all the character arcs and motivations. 12 being all grumpy in series 8 seems far better in hindsight as you see it as part of his arc rather than when initially watching, you could just think he’s really angry and h likeable. I prefer angrier, more grumpy characters in general because it means nice gestures and moments stand out.
There are episodes I did not really like as a kid, counting back and realising I was a kid is particularly insane, but I trudged on and upon rewatching the episodes I really enjoy them.
I agree. When it was still airing I hated most of series 9, When i got to Heaven Sent and Hell Bent the season started to become a lot better. Some of the weaker eps of that season are strengthen by the final 2 eps.

I mean, series 7 was not very good but as I've heard, there were many conflicts with productions and the 50th was a nightmare to realize for Moffat, so I understand it was that way. Both Smith and Capaldi's era are deconstruction of the doctor and the show, mostly in the years priors. I didn't understand it at the time but it's actually very reflective, and Capaldi's era is in some way moffat reflecting on his previous era too.
And I think that's something we lost with Chibnall's era. The series stopped being in conversation with the era that it followed.
@erin_3569 It just dawned on me that there is an alternate universe where Capaldi only ever played the War Doctor, and he did a fantastic if not even superior performance in the role. But that universe was robbed the gift of him as the 12th doctor.
Maybe they weren't cursed with the Chibnall era, though. It's weird to think how things might have played out differently just for scheduling reasons...
That's a really good point and reminds me of what happened with Colin Baker's time as the Doctor. It was always intended for him to have a character arc, probably the first time the series had ever tried consciously do this with an incarnation of the Doctor. I remember when the idea was being kicked around and my issue was that I already had issues with the way JNT was running the series and how what was getting on the air was being perceived by the audience. It was NOT the time to try something that experimental, particularly with the character of the Doctor. JNT thought it was the perfect time because he was confident that even if the audience disliked the new Doctor, which he fully expected them to, he'd have the time to show where he as going with it because he knew he didn't have to worry about cancellation. Even if he lost viewers, he knew the majority would stay with the series and that once he was able to do his big reveal, they'd love it and not only bring those viewers back but gain new viewers thanks to this plot arc.
I had my doubts because of how the Turlough arc had been botched. Turlough's original arc and character was supposed to be something much darker and more dramatic. What we got was a whiney Sting impersonator with a red dye-job running away from his space pimp-daddy who liked to wear a seagull plucked out of an oil spill on his head.
The second I saw Colin's costume, knowing at least the basic of what JNT had planned, I knew that idea was doomed.

I hated the jarring difference between the young, whimsical Eleven, who was warm and loving, showed that he cared, fell in love with River and cared deeply about his companions. Having Twelve regen as an old, grumpy, uncaring, narcissist who hated humans, hated Earth, DGAF about his companion was an instant turnoff for a lot of Whovians. Moffat eventually made him more likeable but it was too little too late for a lot of us.
Honestly out of all the doctors David Tennent’s 10th incarnation clicked with me right out of the gate.
For the 9th Doctor It took the 50th anniversary episode for Christopher Eccleston to finally warm up to me. I didn’t like his run on first viewing back in the day but he deserved more than 1 season.
Took a season for Matt Smith to grow on me but he was amazing out of the gate.
12th eh I felt weird about that one and probably the only one that follows this take. First season never sold me on him and I never really got the appreciation for Capaldi till recently.
13 I have always loved. Her doctor is brilliant but she never got the writing nor the chance all the others got to prove her self. It was sad she never got an episode written by RTD

I adore the 12th Doctor because he added back the more stern, aloof and alien qualities. I hated the tenth Doctor flirting and kissing people, just felt wrong to me for a superior alien being to be behaving in a very human way. Heaven Sent is modern Who at its best, just a stunning piece of television and a phenomenal performance from Peter Capaldi. 12 is the best modern Who Doctor. Great video.

Capaldi era started kinda rough. He really grew into the role though and upon further viewing his era gets better.
I only have two favorite doctors, and he is one of them. Don’t understand any “hatred, “and I honestly don’t care. I got some of the most emotionally gratifying Doctor Who moments from him, and I will scream it to the heavens.

Always been a Capaldi appreciator. He was the very best. Capaldi was for a different audience than the one it cultivated with Tennant and Smith. I genuinely think that many fans were too young to understand what made Moffat and Capaldi so excellent together. I still hear a lot of hatred towards Clara "because she's mean," totally misunderstanding the twisted and beautiful relationship she had with the Doctor.
As an American who is super out of touch w the fan base, I loved Capaldi’s tenure as it was airing and was very surprised to hear a lot of people considered it low tier. He was just so fun and talented and I loved his dynamics with all his companions especially Jenna Coleman but also the other two charmed me. And blind Capaldi arc was top tier I’d love for them to revisit something like that and force the doctor to have to adapt.

Capaldi was the best Doctor and his era should get more love. Clara was also the best Companion, especially for 12, and their chemistry are what made a lot of his era so good. Heaven Sent wouldn't be the masterpiece it is if the Doctor wasn't grieving over the loss of Clara and how he spent 4 and a half billion years trying to break out of his confession dial to find a way to bring her back from the dead. In time 12's era should be appreciated more and more.

Great video. As an old school fan of the series I thought that Capaldi was necessary. The fandom of New-who forgot about Eccleston and had the idea of the Doctor’s persona as a Tenant and Smith which is understandable. The Doctor had become a boyfriend. Which he had never been before but RTD added this ingredient to the character which even in the 60th celebration episodes he has never let go of. To me Capaldi was like a classic Doctor updated. I honestly think the reason it was panned at the time is that it wasn’t Tenant. I’m not saying their wasn’t dodgy episodes but mainly it was because a certain vocal part of the fandom didn’t fancy the lead actor. Put DT in there they would’ve loved it. I think the respect that his era has now mustered is probably because of the chibnall era but also because of the some disappointment with the new latest era. The specials were entertaining and nostalgic enough but we leap back to that RTD/ Doctor/ Boyfriend/ Bestie thing at the forefront apposed to the thrill of adventure and Doctor being the smartest in the room.

I mean, given that the companion who Tennant went back to was Donna Noble, and she was explicitly the 10 companion who didn't fancy the Doctor, and apparently according to that throwaway line in Wild Blue Yonder, always thought he was probably gay anyway, I don't get that as a particular criticism of the recent 14th doctor specials. But given that Tennant played 14 as a more experienced version of 10 who is apparently more in touch with his feelings I guess I can see how you can read across criticism of bits of 10 you didn't like into his performance as 14. As a classic fan, I can absolutely see Capaldi as a modernised classic Doctor.

Would that person walk away with a sense of why this show has lasted for the decades it has. Did it communicate the history or longevity of one of the longest running tv shows in history. See I didn’t think it did. As I said I enjoyed them but that could’ve been done 5 years ago with the same impact. Also I do like David Tenant and his portrayal as the Doctor but it’s difficult to describe why that portrayal can be irksome. A long time ago in a different life I worked with Colin Baker, this was during the wilderness years in the late 90’s. He was saying that the appeal of Doctor Who at that time was it attracted fans who were the outsiders. Not the trendies or coolest and I remember when enjoying Doctor Who was considered sad by the media. It’s a bit like you favorite underground band suddenly gets a pop hit and becomes popular and then they start to change to fit in and gain the respect of the general populace. As an original fan you feel a little left behind because you were there when hardly anybody had heard of them. David Tenant was a bit like that. Although I admit he was necessary for the show to carry on because audiences change but the good-looking, snogging, crying romantic hero wasn’t the Doctor for many. The flirty, suggestive eye brow raises and Billy pipers slightly parted mouth and lip licking was a big change. The Doctor became a romantic a sexual figure. I just think that if I had to explain to a non-Who watcher what was great about Doctor Who after those specials I would struggle.

You kind of lost me on the first draft but this response made me see what you meant with a lot more clarity, the thing Twelfth says at the end of the very first episode of Season 8 even alludes to that, "I'm not your boyfriend". I think I agree with you on that, tho I would personally dial down this as the de facto reason since it was a convoluted mush of problems and changes in both core characteristics and character portrayals that made the show a lot different and disconnected from it's previous iterations, but also gave it the new and cool face necessary to revitalize everything, thus contributing to Capaldi's fall from and slow but fair return to grace in the eyes of the fans. I'm twenty myself so definitely not old enough to have had any contact with classic or new Doctor Who in release time but as I went on and watched both, what I think about Capaldi and his era is that it feels the closest to amend the gap between the new and classic who in terms of just overall format, followed closely by Eccleston's Doctor. The deep seriousness of their arcs, the grey morality all around and the constant internal debate paired with whimsy, wonderful sense of adventure are so reminiscing of the Old Doctor, even when modernized and with cool new spins attached to it. One of the core things - to me - that made Capaldi's era memorable but feels like it would hinder it's popularity a lot on real time watching tho is that his arcs are simply better seen as a whole picture, it's not a grandiose spectacle like the stuff with the Silence or the prophecy of Ten, it's very introspective and linear, a real and subdued growing process that's hard to make appealing when there's only one episode per week.
You nailed it. Watching 12 one episode at a time with a week in between was hard for me. Binge-watching on dvd totally changed my opinion of him and his era. I adore him now.
Clara was a beautiful companion - I loved her. Capaldi's era I have written elsewhere. Simply brilliant. Capaldi was dropped by the young (mostly) who have now grown up and can appreciate his amazing performance. His final scenes with Clara is some of the genuinely most emotionally engrossing ever aired on the show. Smith and Capaldi made for the perfect combination or two-sided coin.
I agree season eight was off-putting for many and seasons 9 and ten were great! In the end Capaldi's moral questioning and behaviour in the end proved him to be a Doctor with a selflessness and huge two hearts. I also agree with season nine's opening. It was still the same Doctor with yes obvious changes - that does happen in life. There was time between seasons when he would have had decades of experiences. People do not stay in their midlife crisis forever - it’s a stage. Repeat I LOVE CLARA!
BTW season ten is amazing for not having a single bad episode.
I have agreed and shared every point you make. That rarely happens in my experience. Steven Moffat needs to appreciate much more deeply than beyond his brilliant contributions before taken over the reins. His Capaldi episodes were vastly overall wonderfully written stories.
This was imo an exceptionally insightful, very well-articulated and explained UA-cam post. 10/10 for loving 11 and for making an awesome post. It was hard at the time to have loved these seasons when everyone was criticising them. I never knew it was that much hated though. How wrong an audience can be. How great to see brilliance now recognised.
I was really attached to Matt Smith's 11th Doctor,and since I'd only really just gotten into the show when he left,it felt like he'd left the show too soon. Despite the fact I was still grieving for 11,I still quite enjoyed 12's characterization right from the beginning. He was the most curmudgeonly and misanthropic Doctor we've ever seen,and therefore the one with which I personally identify.
Matt Smith's last season was pretty poor, and season 6 was also difficult to follow for casual viewers. I think by the time it got to Peter a lot of people had already dropped off sadly (meaning they never met Missy!)

Yeah I couldn’t help but chuckle at that. It’s half the reason why I was ok with able body Davros. In the child in need special. I hope in this new RTD era he isn’t completely retconned. To watch him slowly become the Davros we all know and love would be amazing.

I remember going from Matt smith which was my first doctor, to begin with I thought capaldis doctor was just grumpy and impersonal, but with time capaldi grew on me and he’s now one of my favorite doctors with smith and tennant
I thought Peter Capaldi would make a great Doctor back in 1996, on the strength of his performance in, 'Neverwhere', (ditto Paterson Joseph), and I was not disappointed. I felt that we got a series too long of Clara, and a series too short of Bill, who definitely was a breath of fresh air.
I loved Capaldi. He had some of the most powerful performances I’ve seen in the series. However, that said, I was constantly annoyed by Clara, “Me”, and Nardo…but then, I never happy unless I have something to complain about. 😂
Oh Nardole was just awful. I think I was blocking not mentioning him. We got the least interesting of three possible Claras.
Clara is the longest lasting companion of the new era and I still wanted more.
I loved Capaldi but I still can't defend what they did to Clara. It really just felt like they didn't know how to write her off so she "went nuts"

I really enjoyed Peter Capaldi's portrayal of the Doctor. Right from the word go. (Except maybe for that "where did this face come from" sequence which was a bit silly). I wished he'd stayed for another 3 years and Moffat as well.
I absolutely loved Peter Capaldi during his era. Everyone around me was talking about how they stopped watching because of it, whilst I was I loving it. I’m genuinely so glad that the series is getting the admiration it deserves.

I always loved Capaldi. I was super hyped when I found out he was The Doctor. So much Pertwee, but so much Capaldi acting chops. The guy was brilliant.
I honestly think the main reason is Capaldi himself, he is probably the best actor to play the Doctor since Baker, and he clearly worked incredibly hard to embody the character in all its complexity, making sure that everything he did was built upon everything that had gone before, right back to Hartnell - you can see every previous doctor in there somewhere, and he has the same reverence for the character and the show as the long term fans do. Whittaker was not engaged like that and was therefore not engaging. Chibnall treated the show like his own personal plaything, and it seems the horrifically self-indulgent RTD 2.0 is doing the same.
I enjoyed the entire Capaldi run. The sonic specs and guitar were a bit meh. But the dark to lighter arc for him was great for his growth. The gravitas in his speeches is great. And he gets to display a lot of range.
I said this recently in another video but much like you said I believe that there are many, sometimes overlaping, reasons why people don't like this era, some more legitimate than others:
There's people who hate Clara, some hate that the Doctor is not a romantic young guy, others hate the darker tone, some don't like Danny, or they find the Hybrid storyline pointless, most were already getting tired of Moffat's approach to writing Doctor Who... But ultimately, even for people who don't have big issues with any or all of these points, I think what happened is that this era is the most highbrow sci-fi of all modern who, raising the bar and not always being able to meet it in the most satisfying way. I've always found this era to be the best and more interesting one of all, and if opinion is shifting about it I couldn't be more happy. It doesn't always stick the landing and it has some actually bad episodes, but I never found those to be anywhere close to show-ruining. In fact I'd say it's even more consistently good than Eleven's era.

Capaldi was my favorite Doctor from the moment he stepped out of the Tardis in Deep Breath. And every episode after that cemented his position as my favorite. Twelve reminds me so much of Seven, who was my previous favorite. I really don’t understand why he didn’t get the love he deserved while he was there. Sure there were a few less than stellar episodes in his seasons, but jeez, does no one remember the other duds, especially is seasons 2, 3, 6 & 7? In my opinion, the only BAD episode in the Capaldi era was Kill the Moon. And that was better than 90% of the Chibnall era…
You are bang on that it's Chibnall. The show was always hit and miss but Moffat needed a break really. I felt like 12 was characterised better after his first series and I personally didn't like Clara. Chibnall era wasn't a decline it felt like the show was genuinely dead.

I always felt like the Moffat / Capaldi era was a great alternative to the Mat Smith era, darker, yet still had humour and depth to it. I guess it made it even more special considering what has followed. Now only a gold fish will think of these new seasons as being special, well they are, they are just so very very very special, not. And the thing I love the most was that Capaldi was always a Dr Who fan, and did want to play this part, while those that followed didn't have a clue about the shows past, and even less know how to be THE DOCTOR... Ah R.I.P Doctor Who.

my issue with Capaldi Era is the writing, and how it started how the wrong path pushing messages over story. Capaldi himself is fantastic and would love to hear audio stories of him back in the role.
WTF are you talking about??? Doctor who has always pushed messages. Episode 4 and 5 of the revival directly comments on the Iraq war. Episode 7 discusses the media barons in the UK. Rise of the cyberman/age of steel deals directly with the digitisation and the increasing prevalence of the internet. Torchwood is lead by somebody who practically screams NF voter. The character has also always been a socialist and a leftie. If you're complaint is that the character went woke it's a show created by a woman and an Indian it has always been "woke".
That's not at all what happened during Capaldi's tenure. You might have been seeing things that weren't there. Moffat was a lot less political than RTD.

I loved him as the Doctor. Having seen him in The Thick of It, I had looked forward to a Doctor who didn't take crap. He is hundreds of years old, after all and should show some moral ambiguity and impatience, not just overweening confidence. He was let down by some truly bad scripts (I'm looking at you, Kill the Moon!) but his take on the character was wonderful. When I look at favorite quotations from the series, most of them were delivered by Capaldi. Glad to see his tenure is being re-examined.

I always loved Capaldi once he started, he was a bit older and that took a little adjusting to, but still he's my favorite Doctor. His demeanor was great as even he himself seemed a little confused as to what he was. But the first time I watched Heaven Sent I had chills.
Capaldi was a good Doctor, he worked well with Clara who, imo, was one of the best companions ... loved that first Cap series.

Peter Capaldi's Doctor was hated? Really??? That's too bad. I thought he was great. Even if the story wasn't awesome (and it often felt like the writing wasn't up to snuff), Peter Capaldi's Doctor always managed to be fantastic in it. That's not something I would be able to say about Jodie Whittaker... who was also bogged down by less than great writing.
Capaldi's portrayal is plain and simple genius, and he's gonna be my favorite forever.
I swear the Clara hate comes from the love interest river song considering clara fans Hates River song while River Song fans hates Clara.
I really enjoy the feeling of loving something that is pretty much panned at first but later considered to be brilliant in retrospect. Despite first getting into the show with 9, 12 has been my favorite doctor since around his second season.
I loved Capaldi's Doctor. The sass was fantastic, but he seemed layered as a Doctor. I felt like he was that mature, "professor" that has realized what's he done and also has to think about it. He's damaged and tired of what happens in the Galaxy.
Frankly there was just a long season break at some point and doctor who fell off my radar, and when I came back all the capaldi seasons were out and I instantly fell in love.
Also Clara is great if you don’t remember anything about season 7.
I think another (maybe not massive, but relatively significant) part about why this massive turn around occurred was that people grew up. Capaldi was my doctor growing up. Now that my age group is also a more vocal force on the internet, people who grew up with him are showing their appreciation for his era.
I feel like people forget that Doctor who is technically a kids show first, and kids love watching the show. As those kids grow up, they bring their love for the era of the show they grew up with.
It's why, despite the hate towards the Chibnall era now, I believe there will eventually be a renaissance in appreciation for the 13th doctor once the kids who grew up watching her become more vocal on the internet.

Nah I highly doubt Jodie era will have a renaissance. The poor writing and forgettable episodes in both series 11 and 12 means there is nothing to look back on fondly. Flux is the closest series to get a renaissance.
On its own, that era will not make a comeback but RTD has been rewriting the Flux and timeless chid. Overall fixing the mess Chibnal left him.
In special 2 we see the impacts of the flux, something that was all but reversed by the end of the Series 13.
Special 3 replanted the seed of doubt over the doctors proper identity.
Special 4 tells us the doctor is still working though the fact the he may not be who he thinks he is actually writing the timeless child and not just saying “is god” and leaving it at that.
So yeah sure maybe public prospective on the timeless child may change its not because it was good but because it was rewritten to be good in series 14 and beyond.
Edit: I think i wanna point out that while I jumped on the hate bandwagon with series 8 which impacted my opinion of 9. I watched the episodes of Series 11 and did not enjoy a single one. That led to me skipping series 12 which I also did because of the piss poor marketing this era had. I returned for the flux and watched that at release but while being the best she ever got it was still mediocre. That’s all to say I disliked Chibnal before it was trendy to dislike Chibnal.

As someone who has loved Capaldi since day one, I've found it incredibly gratifying to see how the fandom has come around on him and how loved his era is these days.
I just finished watching all of the 12th Doctor seasons. I was one I’d those who found Capaldi “meh.”
I made that 180-degree move by the time Bill showed up. And wow…Bill. One of the best Companions out there.
I always liked Capaldi as the Doctor and Clara is my favourite companion of the NuWho era.
It seems to me that people either prefer Tennant/Smith or Eccelston/Capaldi.
Moffat is also the best showrunner of the new era.

i actually already love the chibnall era much more than when it aired. some of it is goofy and underbaked but you can find someone who says that about every season/era.
the stories are fun silly sci-fi nonsense, Jodie kills it, the new designs feel intentionally more nostalgic and less early 2000s edgy (Cybermen), and Flux is a wild ride and a hoot!

Ive been watching Doc since the Baker days and Peter is one of the few Doctors i liked instantly. Baker being the other. The problem i had with Peters run was Cara, the one companion who was away of the Doctor past lives in a way no other companion could be. Acting like she had no clue what was going on with him. It story choices with her character that put me off at times
I loved Capaldi from the get-go tbh. I was hesitant because of the age thing, only being a fan of new who, but he won me 'round in his first episode and became my favourite Doctor. I felt the same about Chris, David and Matt. For me, Jodie and Ncuti aren't really my vibe, I just didn't get the "now this is the Doctor" feeling on the initial episode of theirs. Something just felt missing.
Guess everyone has different tastes, and theirs are just as valid as mine is, so no hate on people who dislike Capaldi.
Those who complained during the Capaldi era about "bad writing" had no idea what they were in store for once Chibnall took over. Kinda makes you rethink all that Moffat hate, doesn't it?

It took me a long while to warm up to 12th. There was Heaven Sent, but The Husbands of River Song was the episode that made me fall in love with his character.
Capaldi is my all time favourite doctor. He is in many ways the definitive doctor, and I absolutely love Series 8 and 10. Series 9 is quite mixed but it still ha Heaven sent. He is absolutely perfect in series 8 and absolutely fantastic in Series 10. His arc pared with Missy's arc is so fucking good.
My favourite doctor since his inception, glad to be vindicated by history. absolute goated era, best doctor ever, best master ever, 3 great series.

Capaldi was great. the problem is his stories were week and ppl who only cared about the Doctor being young and hot left when Matt Smith left.
I liked his Doctor when he was the harsher Doctor he started out as. Then it was like they were just giving him scripts intended for Matt Smith.
Overall I would say that Peter Capaldi's run had far worse episodes than Jodie Whittaker's but the difference was that he was never bad in them.
Kill the moon remains the only episode I switched off mid episode. People say JW had "poor scripts". PC had scripts that become so complex NASA would take a decade to work out. As his time on the show progressed Clara became the Doctor he was the companion.
I feel sorry for him, His dour take was dropped after the 1st season to a mid life crisis Dad.
Moffat let him down badly. His opening episode was just a total mess, Missy for me remains one of the best characters, One stare from Michelle and its time to change the underwear.
I always loved Capaldi, as he was my first doctor. At the time I just liked the aliens and the sci-fi but was I got older and watched the rest of NuWho, I realised he is the best Doctor for portraying his moral instability.

Honestly I haven’t watched Dr. Who since Capaldi. Series 9 is where my opinion on him changed. And then when he became a professor in series 10, well that was one of my favorite portrayals of the Doctor ever.
Seriously most of my favorite scenes from Doctor Who are Capaldi just giving monologues. Like his actual college class lecture he gave, the one on the bootstrap paradox, the one about the perfect camouflage, and then finally his speech about war and consequences.
Matt Smith may still be my favorite Doctor. But pretty much all of my favorite scenes are Capaldi’s.
(David Tennant was my favorite actor to play the doctor though)

For the exact same reason that many of the Jodie Whittaker episodes were unwatchable - the writing was ghastly. On top of that the show runner decided with Capaldi to create an unlikable Doctor who would soften and become likeable as the series went on'; but by that time everyone had stopped watching. This choice was was doubly baffling because this is exactly what they tried with Colin Baker as the 6th Doctor and it killed the original series.
Capaldi’s Doctor was very good. From being a fan of Classic Who, I was used to older Doctors and thought it was time for one again. The best episode was with Robin Hood. The humor would only have worked with (among the NuWho Doctors) Capaldi’s Doctor, because he was cynical and didn’t believe in heroes.

I've always assumed that it's like how Ashilldr/Me said later. That the Hybrid is gonna be the Doctor and MISSY (/the Master). The "lover of chaos". If they ever became friends, it could quickly go downhill like that! Which is why I loved that arc in series 10 so much. We came THAT close.
It makes the most sense, logically.
And then Chibnall came around and retconned and ruined EVERYTHING. He really pulled a Rian Johnson on 10 seasons of established Doctor Who....
If he'd kept his series 8 persona throughout it would've been something unique but the fact that he begins to heal in series 9 and naturally evolves in series 10 makes him such a loveable and relatable main character. I detested his attitude in series 8 when I was 14, but 10 years of life experience changed my outlook and elevates his character arc in a realistic way. He was The Doctor when I needed him most.

i couldn't imagine any other doctor saying that, which is one reason why Capaldi was always one of my favorite doctors. Capaldi's doctor felt like it was the doctor, but the mask was slipping, the countless years of anger and horror have started to bleed through, leaving a man that will sacrifice/destroy anything to save the one he took responsibility for.
I'd always loved capaldis doctor straight from the beginning although I was a bit unhappy with series 9 until I rewatched it. Now I absolutely adore his whole era.
Right you joke about Chibnall’s bit being looked on fondly in the future; I’ve actually rewatched a load of it recently and I was pleasantly surprised!
Look there are some massive glaring issues from the start, season 11 is the worst season ever, there were too many companions, and yeah the writing was weak in a lot of places. BUT
- Jodie did the best she could with the material and I really liked her as the doctor
- Graham was fabulous throughout and I wish we’d gotten to know Ryan more (still not fond of Yaz)
- all the festive episodes are solid. Really enjoyed them all.
- Season 13 was actually really good on a second watch! Surprisingly so! It felt like a farewell tour, hitting up all the old favourites
- the Master was amazing every time they were on screen. I’m including the Rasputin dance.
No it doesn’t hold up to the RTD or best of the Moff runs, but looking back at it, especially knowing that the next run will be hugely different, it had some really great moments and they need to be celebrated as much as the rest of it is torn apart (looking at you, Pting).
And fyi, I quite liked the timeless child, I wish it was followed up better.
12 is my Doctor. Loved him the second I saw Deep Breath. The character development, acting and speeches. And, unironically, Hell Bent is my favourite episode of all time.
Another one I did not especially like as a kid, although I watched it at the time, but adored upon rewatching.
Yeah it’s magic isn’t it. It feels like really grown-up story telling. Some of the most emotional Doctor moments ever - seeing the Doctor’s rage following the events of Face the Raven and Heaven Sent is masterful character writing.

I had like one interaction with a fan who wasn't me back then and I was genuinely shocked by how much they disliked Series 9 and Capaldi as a whole (as opposed to me, who already at that point considered Capaldi to be my favourite).

The Moffatt era is easily the closest in spirit to the classic 20th century series. Even his Doctors’ costumes look “Doctorish” in the classic mould, in a way that the costumes from the RTD and Chibnall eras very self-consciously don’t. Both RTD (in both of his tenures) and Chibnall were preoccupied with “modernizing” Doctor Who. Moffatt was much more obviously a fan of the original series, and understood its DNA.

The Doctor - as the character was codified in the twentieth century - can be many things. But “cool”, and “hot” are categorically not amongst them, unless they are of the “so uncool it’s cool” or “weird-hot” variety. Conventionally handsome/pretty, and fashionably attired are two attributes that would have been understood to be off the table from the start, by anybody with an understanding of what the show was, and what made it unlike other shows. The Doctor does NOT put hair gel in his hair, or paint his fingernails, or have his ear pierced, or show off his pecs with a plunging neckline, or wear copious amounts of jewelry, or eyeliner - all of which RTD/Chibnall “Doctors” have done. His dress-sense is strictly Victorian/Edwardian. He’s weird and eccentric, but not in a contrived way. His sexuality, such as it is, is best summed up by one of Tom Baker’s best lines, written by Douglas Adams: “you’re a beautiful woman, probably” - complete disinterest in the whole concept. The New series has NEVER gotten the pitch right, but of all the Doctors in the current era, Moffatt/Capaldi came closest to capturing it, closely followed by Moffatt/Smith.
I think in terms of classic series spirit I'd say the Chibnall era is the closest.

@fromchomleystreet well there's that but there's also a return to more educational historical stories which takes the show back to it's roots in the 60s! There's also the classic monsters - Sontarans return to a look similar to The Time Warrior, the Sea Devils return with their classic design, the Cybermen redesign brings back The Invasion helmet design and its hard to explain but I think the general vibe of the era feels more in tune with the classic era than the RTD and Moffat eras. I've always wanted to get into Doctor who and the lockdown helped me get into it. I watched everything from 9 to 13 in one go. I'm honestly surprised people consider 12 as a bad doctor cause for me he is easily one of the best ones there. Also 9 is extremely underrated.
Capaldi is my favourite nuwho Doctor because he took all my flaws as a blunt AF psychotic and turned them into virtuous qualities that could be charming and even helpful. He also had my favourite incidental music theme which I feel speaks of struggle and sadness as well as triumph and joy in a way the previous Doctors' themes don't.
Loved the final Capaldi season, it's like they pulled out all of the weird and wonderful ideas that they'd had and thought 'that'll never fly with the BBC, or maybe even the fans', and bunged them all into one season knowing they were all leaving anyway. This resulted in some of the most obscure yet fun stories we've seen in Doctor Who.
