The worst part of watching these episodes back is knowing how much harder I accidentally made things for myself. I stumbled around in the dark of the Shrouded Woodlands for two days, might not be obvious from the editing but the outfit change should be a giveaway. 😂 BUT I found what ends up being my favorite location in the DLC by the end of the episode so it’s like I got a reward 💪🏻 I do remember thinking during the Shrouded Woodlands that I felt like the DLC was giving less hints than the base game. No, I’m just silly and should’ve come back to this area later. Onwards!
lol, I definitely think this is intended to be the last thing you figure out. It's by far the thing that trips up most playthroughs I've seen. I also think it's amazing that you found the unburned version of the slide before you found the burned version!
i actually did the same thing- i solved the shrouded woodlands before i ever found the reel that hints into how to get past the fire, haha, because i was like "this is the only orange fire i've seen so far in the entire DLC! that is very suspicious!"
i think a lot of people go off the assumption that they need to figure out that first entrance point since there is the time crunch with the damn so they are beating their head against a wall struggling to figure it out when its meant to just figure out the layout, figure out how to open the door so you can come back in from another entrance. i know a few people just quit since they couldnt figure out the woodlands. Just watched someone who would meditate every time the dam broke because he had this faulty assumption that it made you lose access to everything and was near the end of the loop... Surprised he actually finished restricting oneself to a 13 minute loop when 22 already felt too short seems like madness lol.
Making things harder on yourself than they're supposed to be is a staple of OW and EotE playthroughs, for sure! For me at least, a non-trivial amount of time watching these playthroughs is spent forcefully pointing at the screen going "LOOK! LOOK! IT'S RIGHT THERE!"
this has been the most casual bruteforcing of the shrouded woodlands forbidden archive in my live. like fr our girl skipped almost all of the real stranger and got straight to the endgame
The very first time I entered the loading zone, I thought "wow, this is almost pitch dark, I wonder if there's a quantum thing going on" so I blew out the candles on the raft...and dropped into the Forbidden Archive area.
@@ReverendTed To date this is the only skip I have yet to see in a let's play. I have seen the other two (Someone circumventing the Endless Canyon using secret bridge & someone finding out they could walk through starlit cove alarms after trying to use the fire to "reset" the loop) Still, going into the fire without being hinted to is something pretty rare to see!
@@blitzprog In the very first playthrough of the DLC that I saw the streamer walked through the fire without getting hinted. I've seen at least one other person do it too, but this is the first time I've seen someone see the uncensored version of the River Lowlands slide reel before seeing the censored version.
@45:00 one of the things that makes this game so brilliant is we discover the entire Nomai civilization through only words and (basically) no images, while we discover the Stranger's civilization through only images and no words.
I love how empathetic you are to them. I've seen people get stuck thinking they're zombies, or that they became evil after they died. But no, they're just chillin' and vibin'. Also, I think they represent how most of us would react to the Eye. The Nomai are what we would aspire to be, but these guys are actually us.
Well, they are actually not just chillin' and vibin', they have been doing the exact same routine for thousands of years, trapped in a fake version of their homeworld. There is even an ending that shows how much you can "lose sight of yourself" in this simulation
I always enjoy messing with the scary owl people. They're so serious and dignified and you're just this annoying little fish creature that comes out of nowhere to interrupt their ancient routines and make a nuisance around the place, flipping their light switches and leaving doors open.
Love the attention to detail that you let yourself enjoy when investigating. Stuff like watching the Owlk die when the reservoir breaks, going back to see if their homes are open, looking through all their paintings. A lot of people miss this stuff in their playthroughs
It's a really interesting change in design philosophy for the DLC. In the base game, they were VERY strict about adding in anything that didn't relate to the plot (aka why Timber Heart has huge plains of nothing) so as to not distract the player from the "interesting" places to explore. Here they added a lot more props and worldbuilding and the world definitely feels more lived in. You can imagine an Owlk sitting in one of their chairs and just watching the river or fishing.
Spoiler It really makes you think if an Owlk walked by the alarm bell sometime in the last 280000+ years and noticed that they couldn't hear the bell anymore. Very sad.
14:49 I never noticed that the shadow the owlks’ antlers makes looks like a hand. That explains the hand shaped grabbers. It’s crazy how I still notice new details to this day even after knowing every intricate detail in the game’s lore and gameplay😅
49:50 this right here is the moment that makes this DLC so amazing. Realizing it was never about the codes but about knowledge is just so uniquely Outer Wilds
Absolutely insane that you found the true slide real before watching the burned one lol. I think you were thrown off by happening to try the right thing with the artifact - most people get stuck there and are forced to keep exploring the Stranger!
I'm realizing now why they don't spell out how to actually enter the shadow area until later. The sheer amount of brute forcing continues to be wild and impressive.
Becca: (sees the slide reals that explain how the Strangers completely decimated their home planet to get to the eye of the universe, only to get there and realize that the eye would mean the death of their species, and that they destroyed their home planet for something that they perceive to be worse than nothing) Also Becca: "I wonder if their story is gonna be a sad one" LOL, girl, I love your content, because if that isnt MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE LMAO
I never actually saw the owl people in the simulation dissolve after the dam breaks for myself or connected the noise that occurs after the dam break with it. I knew what happened overall, but I never caught or connected the dots to those specific details. Now it's even sadder. :C The devs did a pretty good job making sure we know the owls are not "evil" I think with the little set pieces like the bandstand, all of the little paintings, and the owl person who's just hunched over watching the same slide reel of their home over and over. They're sad and afraid and angry, which is pretty reasonable given the circumstances. The Hearthians are unnaturally chill in comparison, lol.

45:20 woo I already saw there were furnitures inside these 2 buildings when the door quickly opens, but I've never seen anyone get inside after they're gone! Amazing video once again, really great job into finding so quickly the solution for this area as it's often the hardest people get!
I was really excited to see the doors were actually open into their houses!!! I was dying to see inside them after I spent a while trying to sneak in. Initially in the DLC I was really sad that the signalscope wasn’t important anymore because I loved using sounds to solve mysteries in the base game. But after the Shrouded Woodlands I realized they were still using sound just as much to give us hints, which was so darn cool!
@@BeccaBytes SPOILERS!!! . . . . . i never noticed until this playthrough, but i love how the signalscope doesnt work in the stranger cause why would it! theyre specifically trying to hide in this system and we eventually see them use *signal blocking* technology! another really neat detail is that, while the dam breaks over the loop, it seems to lose its *structural integrity* ;)

Many people do not put two and two together with the screaching noises and the fires going out from the flooding, cool you did :). Also, good job figuring out the fire was fake. This game is so much fun when you do stumble around clueless and have to piece things together, as new information really hits hard that way. The worst playthrough I've seen was by the channel Pirate Software, who "used the wrong formula to get the right answer" the entire playthrough. For example, he was jumping around on the raft and just so happened to jump the wrong way and fall off right as it was passing through the tunnel. He managed to skip so much through pure boneheaded luck, that he managed to get the ending even though he never actually found the hidden village you just found. He skipped so much content by doing stuff like that in the main game as well that when he got to the end of the loop inside the Stranger, he was very confused by the ATP non-death loop end animation, because he thought the loop only ended when he died. I'm glad you are getting that chance to explore and understand the story, can't wait to see more.
