    39:00 Ariadne Oliver is a stand in for Christie herself. She's a way for Christie to lovingly poke fun at herself... like she's a grumpy older lady who's been stuck doing a series of mystery books about a detective that she doesn't like at all.
    But she's also incredibly skeptical, more so than Poirot. So I'd guess that's one of the major problems people had with this film.

    I now hold out a slim hope that EFAP will check out other Poirot content. I'd be especially interested in what they would make of the ITV adaptation of Halloween Party, the novel on which Haunting in Venice is loosely based. Either way, I would recommend the Poirot series to mystery fans, if only to wash away the bad taste of stuff like Glass Onion.

    Mauler said a problem with the story was that the houskeeper, Olga only temporarily left, making it convenient that the mother, Rowena had enough time to mark Alecia and dump her into the canal after she found her dead from poison. In the movie, Olga says she offered to stay in the house at night to care for Alecia even though she never stayed in the house at night. After midnight, she heard noises and became scared and the movie shows her looking pretty terrified. She left the house because Alecia was sleeping deeply and she was too scared to stay. She tells Poirot that Alecia died because she was scared and stupid. That means Rowena had all night to do what she did with no chance of the housekeeper coming back until morning.
    A problem I had with the movie was that after Rowena realized that she had attacked the wrong person, she was able to quickly find Joyce alone on the balcony and easily throw her off. That was a very handy coincidence and she would only have had a few minutes to get it done. Very lucky timing.
    I did like the movie overall and found the character work to be pretty good. I felt invested in the characters and was hoping for the best for each them.

    • @silenceyouidiot
      @silenceyouidiot Місяць тому

      That one coincidence is why I thought "oh its' the siblings, there must be two killers in this case and one ran into Poirot, the other Joyce." Obviously when they bind the two within the first half I knew they wouldn't, but I still thought there must be two killers for a while.
      It's also interesting to think if Poirot in his state-of-mind would have simply given up on trying to solve the mystery if the killer didn't try and go for him.

    01:40:00 I figured out the honey right at the first time he took it. Was odd only he had the tea, and the expression of the lady about honey made me suspicious of it, esp since all the spoopy stuff happened after and being aware of the play, which was conspiciously mentioned before, reinforced by the whole garden scene, made it 100% certain that was poisoned.
    I got whodunit wrong though, I thought it was Olga and that she was the one hidding the honey etc, didnt realize it was Munchausen by Proxy... I wouldnt make a good Poirot.
    But the movie is well crafted, dialogue is good, and there are enough hints and clues that theres chances you will get at least one of them.

    See I've always been put off by MauLer's dismissal of Anderson saying he can't be scared because he doesn't engage with it. I'm someone who does that too after a few too many very scary movies when I was young, so it made sense to me. And now it's doubly puzzling because it's for the same reason MauLer gives here re jump scares - you know something scary will happen, you don't know exactly what it will be but you can accurately guess the form it will take. So when it happens, you're already braced and go "yup there it is".

    • @user-yo7hz8gw4t
      @user-yo7hz8gw4t 13 днів тому

      Wasn't the issue something else? That Anderson said that, because he didn't get scared, therefore X isn't a horror game? Essentially making an objective statement on the game's genre, only offering subjective points to back it, then later attempting some defense about subjectivity being implied that missed the point entirely because it was the exact thing being criticized. It's been a while since I watched that coverage though, I might be missing something. In which episode does he take issue specifically with Anderson just not being scarred?

    As a horror fan I don’t appreciate the under appreciation of the “jump scare”.😂. The jump scare is a paying homage tool. The same as being in the killers POV. Of course you know “jump scare” are coming. It’s about how creative can it be. James Wan was kind of the king of that with conjuring and Insidious films. We didn’t go to get jump scared. We went to see how he created the build up and atmosphere.

    Talking about how dumb endings can be: Game of Thrones. I just finished it after never have watching it, and now I know why everyone was so mad. After the writers ran out of original content, the seasons fell from 10 episodes per to 6 and 7…an overall 7 full episodes short over the last two seasons. The writers were clearly great at adapting the books, but had no original input to offer when they ran out of pages. The last two seasons were lazy and season 8 was ridiculous. The fight for Winterfell almost looped the same fighting scenes over and over for filler, then the girl somehow jumps from behind the Night King and kills him in 3 seconds?? Not her and Jon fighting together, it some trap they set, nothing, just girl bossing it? Absolutely terrible payoff. All the “bad guys” died, good guys lived. Just hacker writing.

    So as a long time Godzilla fan. Here are my 2 cents (proceeds to write huge block of text), Gojira was an amazing film that took the story seriously and the characters were treated seriously. As a child I found it to be one of my least favorite in the franchise because like all children I wanted to see giant fire breathing dinosaur fight other monsters, I will say even as a child though I knew Godzilla's revenge was the worst in the series. My point is as far as the Franchise goes there have been arguably only 3 films that took the serious approach instead of spectacle approach. Those 3 being Gojira, Shin Godzilla (2016) and now Godzilla Minus One. As a Godzilla fan I have a fondness for all the movies in the franchise even the 1998 film though like others I've taken to calling the creature in that film Zilla which is exactly what Toho did when they got the rights to it back. Fans don't like to here that the things they like are flawed. Godzilla as a franchise is very flawed if looking at it from a serious writing perspective as the Showa Era feels very sci fi schlock and the Heisie era 80's and 90's action movie schlock, Millennium series feels like a mess as most movies in the era weren't even directly connected to each other. Legendary felt like they tried to strike a balance between well written and spectacle and by that I mean they failed to hit the mark on both. Godzilla 2014 had the best acting in the Legendary series but the fights were underwhelming, Kong Skull Island might be the best film in the series over all with good acting and believable action, King Of the Monsters has better fights but worse characters, Godzilla Vs. Kong is a downgrade all around as the fights seem worse and characters are no better. Godzilla X Kong is just disappointing. It's the most action packed of the series but it fells like it's moving at a break neck pace while at the same time wasting time. Feels like Godzilla X Kong should have been a 10, hour long episode series or a 20, half hour long episode series.
