- Now we enter probably the most bitchin' Zorro movie that shall ever be made! relish in the memes and genuine appreciation of an awesome film.

"The sequel was so bad, what happened?"
The Zorro sequel was written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Those two have been a cancer for decades.
Kurtzman?!? NOOO!!!
That's actually fascinating. And sad
Now everything makes sense. Two of the best writers of all time. Sadly this time their partner in stupidity Damon Lindelof was not with them or it would have been a masterpiece.
Seriously? Kurtzman ruined ANOTHER series?
Is there anybody that perfectly encapsulates "failing upward" more than him?

Diego: Do you know how to use that?
Alejandro: Yeah. Pointy end goes into the other man.
Diego sighs.
Diego: This is going to take a lot of work. What about you, Galadriel?
Galadriel: Stab, twist, gut!

My favorite line in this movie is when after admitting he was about to execute seveal innocent bystandards just to draw out Zorro, Don Rafael then orders his men: "Get the children off the street!...Children should never have to see the things we do." Despite being genuinely evil Rafael has several moments in this movie that reveals his own twisted moral code. Makes him feel real.
Exactly this. While I appreciated that line as a kid, as an adult I really appreciate that they didn't make Raphael a pervert. It would have been so easy... all the pieces are there. His adopted daughter looks just like the lost object of his infatuation... but the entire movie he acts like a proper father.
God I miss good writing.
@@trequor well I think the idea is that it isn’t the veneer, Don Rafael IS a gentleman. He adheres to the classical standards of honor and comportment, he’s just the dark side of nobility.

The similarities with Batman are because the character was partly inspired by old "pulp heroes" like Zorro and The Shadow. In some Batman itterations, the movie Bruce and his parents see before they die is even "The Mark of Zorro", implying that the Batman persona was inspired by them in-universe as well.
Zorro: The Gay Blade is the movie the Wayne's family watched before...
Not even joking, that's the real title of the movie!
@@MinisterOfTruth As SolarDragon says, it depends on the iteration of Batman. In the Frank Miller Dark Knight series, it's revealed the Waynes watched The Mark of Zorro. That's the 1940 remake of the (to my eyes better) 1920 original. The star of the 1920 version was Douglas Fairbanks, who was credited by name by one of Batmans spiritual fathers Bob Kane as a big inspiration to the character.
I'm not well versed enough to say in which other Batman runs the Waynes saw The Mark of Zorro before their death, but I believe there were other runs where he was. Bob Kane himself hasn't ever explicitly put the film in the comics, so it's all up for future iterations to put their own spin to it.
@@HoofHearted88 ohh, thanks for the clarification, partner.
@@MinisterOfTruth Any time.
After listening to the EFAP Highlight today that covered Luke in TLJ, by that guy's logic, Zorro getting old simply means his morality should be a complete 180 and be ready to commit genocide because...age.
Also he was going to kill his nephew because he had a nightmare
Yep, it's pretty weird that he didn't kill his daughter just to make sure Don Rafael died 😅😑
Oh yeah, the "not so great debate" guy.
“But the peasants!”
“Let them die Alejandro. Let them die with the past.”
Thank you EFAP for covering one of my favorite movies of all time. Heck it’s my favorite superhero film. When I think of Martin Campbell at his best I think of this movie. Antonio Banderas, Hopkins and the cast are amazing; the writing is top notch and the fight choreography. It’s everything you want in a film like this. In fact this is the best Batman Beyond movie we have that hasn’t been made in live action. Seriously WB copy and paste this type of story if you want to make it. An easy 9/10 for me. Seriously folks if you haven’t seen it, please watch it.
I thought this was a Robert Rodriguez movie lol
@@hkaayaakuu Martin Campbell directed it.
Honestly, yeah. This is the best live action Batman Beyond that we will ever get. It does a fantastic job building the master and apprentice relationship between Diego and Alejandro. The passing of the torch feels very earned when it finally happens, and a lot of films get that wrong, usually by rushing things or generally botching the execution.
@@Zansatsu-0379 Whenever you pass the torch you really need to have your character earn the mantle and never make it easy. And within this film and Batman Beyond, it makes sense why the senior hero needs to find a successor due to the limitations of age and also both learn and grow from the younger one. Balance as opposed to the younger one being always right or nobody challenging/ following through on criticisms when apt.
@Avarn388 Having the mentor not be completely infallible also helps. Not having all the answers to every problem. Both Bruce and Diego are still wrapped up in their past in a lot of ways, and there's a lot of baggage that they need to parse through. So the young apprentice isn't the only one to have an arc in the story. Diego does this more directly with the fact that he has yet to get back at Raphael, and then Elena is added to the mix. But Bruce has several moments like that in the series as well. Most notably, the stuff with "Talia" and partially with Mr. Freeze, along with a few hints of it with Barbara Gordon.
"There are a lot of connections with Batman and Zorro, probably." Yeah, it's almost like Batman was inspired by Zorro and the Shadow or something XD
And they're both inspired by Robin hood maybe?
"Oh no, the peasants are revolting." - MauLer
"You said it. They stink on ice!" - Mel Brooks; 'History of the World: Part I' (1981)
That line was also used in Dragonheart
I didn’t realize until later that Antonio Banderas is a funny actor. He’s a good lead but he does comedy very well.
He's not the best actor, but he does have a decent range

"He's Batman with a sword in old-y times." Brilliant historical analysis from Shad 😂😂😂
Zorro predates batman by almost 15 years.
1:28:20 What makes this hilarious is that Don Rafael still imagines Zorro as de la Vega. “Young and vigorous” are not words used to describe that old retiree, and… good grief, isn’t de la Vega her actual FATHER?! What the heck kind of revenge fantasy is this?!
I love how Anthony Hopkins, in the scene where they're talking about turning Alejandro into a gentleman, is clearly just fuckin' around off camera blowing smoke rings.
You can see it when the camera cuts back to him when he says "yeeeeeesssss". 🤣👍
I don't use this term lightly or often, however, Catherine Zeta-Jones in this movie is EXQUISITE 😍 I remember being a young teen girl thinking "when I grow up, I want to look like THAT" 😅

1:14:02 Mauler was talking over it, but in the prologue when Joaquin and Alejandro are in the wagon, the owner of the wagon makes a comment about how he hated making coffins for their parents, and that he’d hate to make coffins for them, or something like that.
I love this movie so much. My parents showed it to me when I was 5, and it blew me away. Back in high school, when I took Drama class, I convinced my group to perform the scene where Montero comes to take Diego away and kills Esperanza, and we killed it! Antonio Banderas' face keeps moving forming expressions that fit his emotional state and that's very distracting!
Metal made that "2024 is lit" joke with NO CLUE how true it would become
Kudos to the editor, those were some really well timed jokes throughout.
what i love about this movie is how the action mostly remains very personal. So many modern movies just have so much unnecessary bloat, too many people on screen, to many explosions, to many distractions. When you get climaxes like this, where it's very much good vs. bad guy just straight up face to face, it's just so much more engaging
well, that and Catherine Zeta-Jones.... ho-boy....
I really love the mask of Zorro from the sense of it being both a coming of Age and Passing of the Torch all tied up in a revenge plot story
by the time the story starts Proper Diego is too old to be Zorro anymore and he wants to kill Raphael, Alejandro wants to kill captain love for murdering his brother
being that their goals are entwined they agree to work together, but Diego doesn't just hand over the Zorro guise to Alejandro until he proves himself worthy of it
he trains him and makes him work for it, teaching him how Zorro acts, since its not just about being a good sword fighter, its why Zorro fights and what he fights for that really matters
and some trivia that I know: the flower coverings was incase there were bugs in the flowers
and during Elena and Zorro's Stable fight, Antonio actually got a bit turned on doing it hence why they kind of avoid his crotch in several shots
My favourite childhood movie. I even dressed as Zorro for Halloween.
This movie would NEVER be made today. The sword strip fight alone.
The strip fight is disturbing af, in universe.
@@akashajones6079 Nah, it's hot af
I feel like Diego escaped prison when he did specifically because Raphael's return Gabe him something to live and fight for. He cares enough to escape when revenge against Raphael is possible again
I rented the vhs of mask of zorro so many times that the rental place just let me keep it the last time I checked it out 😂
Original Zorro didn't bother escaping before now because he was dead inside. He lost everything and Raphael was back in Spain. Seeing Raphael again reignited his spirit of revenge. Now he can escape and kill Raphael in the same day.
To Shad: Zorro's style is not to attack in anger. He uses his opponent's anger against them. The trickster taunting style doesn't work if you are also angry.
First 15 minutes, Simpsons reference. Fringy is here with us in spirit.

The rapier did not necessarily have to have cut off Joachim's head to make the necklace fall free. Movie necklaces are VERY breakable. The most common way of removing a necklace on-screen is to grab the object on the necklace, and pull it forward, causing the necklace to break around the wearer's neck. Someone else often puts it on right away with no depicted repair to the break.
I find it funny how they bring up the Batman comparisons when the original Zorro pulp fiction stories were the origin of the whole “masked hero with a secret identity” trope. Essentially Batman and many of the comic book super heroes were originally inspired by Zorro.
One of my all-time fav action-adventure movies! Been waiting on this reaction for months. Catherine Zeta-Jones was one my first silver screen crushes growing up. I never tire of that sword fight scene with Antonia Banderas duel wielding sabers- BAD.ASS!

15:48 Fun fact, Zorro was a direct inspiration for Batman, hence why there's been many references over the years to 'The Mark of Zorro' being the film that Bruce and his parents leave before being gunned down.

1:10:04 ^.-.^ Ooo! I like how the only ones whom dinae react to the blast in fear are Zorro and Captain Love. Good touch.
9:06 Also yes, that Z was on a coffin at the beginning, the lads were hiding in the undertaker’s wagon, because Don Rafael was setting this execution as a trap for Zorro. ^.-.^
Also you did kinda gloss over it a bit, but I’mma say that the wee moment between Zorro and Three Fingered Jack as he lay dying; is a part I really appreciate. That brief moment of recognition by Jack and the little comforting smile he gave, so that he knows he didn’t die alone.. It makes me misty eyed every time. ^.-.^
1:13:00 Fun fact: Captain Love, Joaquin Murrieta and Three-fingered Jack were all real people, and Captain Love really did chop off Murrieta's head as well as Three-fingered Jack's hand and keep them in jars of alcohol. I don't think he ever drank from it though.
Probably pickled it in the wrong vintage.
I'm pretty sure he only pickled them to preserve them as proof that he had killed them.
He had to confirm identidy for the bounty. The real Love was just a normal California Ranger.
The line right after, "he was young, and vigorous", is solid gold. Shame it didn't make it in. xD
I remember being extremely excited about this movie coming out as an early teen. The teaser trailers were my 1st true exposure when he came on the screen in silhouette and slashed the screen with 3 cuts. Such a fun movie and a great example of a summer blockbuster. ^-^

I've never watched Legend of Zorro and never going to either - this is how much I love this particular movie.
It was so incredibly awful that my entire family turned off the TV, sat in silence for a few seconds, then collectively decided the movie never existed.
@@dianebrooks1859 It was written by Alex Kurtzman, which should explain a few things.
They joke that if Zorro was made today it'd be a woman, but in the early 00's there was a tv series called The Queen Of Swords and it was basically genderbent Zorro. Wasn't half bad.
Also, apparently Anthony Hopkins loved working on this movie because he got to do his own fight scenes. As he was getting older, he wasn't put in action heavy roles, so he got a real kick out of doing the sword fights.
Ok, so on the American officer's revolver, there were cavalry carbines that use revolving chambers at the time, though I'm not sure as to the design of that one specifically. Also, a musket can hit a target from 200 yards away during the Napoleonic Wars, so a long barrel revolver would probably have at least 100 yards of accuracy in good hands.
Captain Love is using an anachronistic 1858 Remington revolver carbine at the beginning, likely as a stand in for the period correct Colt-Patterson revolver rifle, which are pretty much unobtainable as so few were made & no reproductions exist. The rest of the movie he is using a period correct Colt-Patterson revolver, as there have been several repros made of those over the years. Real ones are also nigh impossible to get hold of( ironically enough, even for Sam Colt himself, he went bankrupt and had to sell all his original guns and factory, & a few years later when he started working on the Walker revolver he first tried to get hold of some of his original guns to work off of, but couldnt afford them. The California gold rush had started and they were in such demand prices skyrocketed. It forced him to start fresh, and create the original 'Big Iron' revolver, the Walker-Colt .44. And started a long tradition of Sam Colt ripping off everybody from the US Gov to his own parts suppliers.)
1:39:00 it's worth mentioning, the revolver Kiefer carries in this had six shots, but then each cylinder had to be reloaded in a similar manner to the rifles.

The reason Diego waits 20 years is because Raphael left Mexico. Which is backed with the fact that he had that grand celebration for returning where we see Elena. And when he went to the jail, he was under cover so he wouldn't give away he arrived early. Now you could ask, why did Diego spend the 20yrs in jail, instead of hiding somewhere? And I'd argue, and I believe Hopkins would argue. That Diego both needed to grieve for the loss of his family, and punish himself because he blames himself for his wife's death. So, he chose to stay in jail until Raphael returned to Mexico. Or maybe! The scene in the jail closing in on Hopkins eyes, signified he had lost who he was, but after seeing Raphael the fire was ignited again.
The boys making all the references to Batman and failing to mention that the play that Bruce and his parents were seeing was "The Mask of Zorro" smh.
Batman was also partly inspired by pulp heroes like Zorro and the Shadow. I always liked how they integrated the meta aspect of that into Batman's origin by having Bruce being inspired by Zorro.
