You're truly the only one to cover this very topic. I've been suffering of shanks on chips and pitches for a few years and it's made the game an ordeal and almost quit.. It comes and goes but it's been improving by controlling my dippy takeaway where I was moving towards ball but I'm definitely going to use those drills to reinforce the proper movement. Thanks a lot!

Thanks Stephane, sounds like you're on the right track by identifying the move towards the ball on the backswing. Good job!

Thanks for posting this. I have this problem all the time and can't figure out what I am doing wrong other than hitting off hozzle, causing it to shank right. Will practice these drills next time.

Great video. I was shanking on practice green after practicing a while but not during round. was still unacceptable so I solved it by staying connected and keeping my elbows in similar to what you are showing. it kept my club on plane and I got consistent on making solid contact. My goal is at least one chip in per round now.

great content. thankyou thankyou James! I feel compelled to share something about shanking. Years ago i struggled big time. I found every time when I went from practicing a short chip to a slightly longer chip or pitch I would just start shanking. it confounded me, for a very long time. But I didnt give up bc im v stubborn. I tried many many cures, but nothing seem to really fix the problem for long. One day while shanking away hopelessly , a wierd thought occurred to me ..that the added speed, even the slightly added speed from the longer pitch swing made my arms actually get longer. they stretched out ever so slightly more. I know that probably sounds ridiculous, but for some reason that idea seemed to help me greatly- I could anticipate and adjust for that lengthening in different ways - stretch my arms out a little more at address, stand little taller, and further away, focus on good posture or such a little tweaks. that idea seemed to fix at least my particular version of it. The other thought that helped me was focusing on the hosel/ heel, and where it touched the ground inside the ball, instead of the club face hitting the ball. that also helped. thank god that problem got fixed it was horrible!! but these new ideas are for sure very interesting so should it plague me again I will definitely give these a go!

Killing my love for the game as it’s now in my head, I have gone from an 18 to 20 in the last couple of months and dropping like a stone - Have you a video on that problem? Thanks 😊

Over the summer i olayed the best golf of my life. 2 over through 9, a 6 over through 9, broke 90 first time. I wqs playing well in september and all of a sudden i lost all my shots on the 17th hole. 1 month later, i still cant hit a single iron or wedge over 40 yards, and every single one is shanking now. I didnt shank all season. Ill be trying these tips asap.

I shank by subconsciously compensating for thinning. My thinning is caused by a slight lift trying not to chunk. So now that I lift I try extend to not lift thus exposing the hosel = shank. I go back to 1” chips then 2,3,4,5,6 “ all the way to one foot chips. Yips are 90% mental and the other half physical!!😂

Love finally getting a most logical explanation, but afraid I'm now married to my successful, on-course, external focus. 🙂 Have learnt to "thump" my "bounce" (and trust it) on a particular area of the ground/grass, both an inch and a half "inside" of and an inch or so "ahead" of the ball. Were I to start keeping my hands in closer, I'd feel certain that that hard old ball would knock the club right out of my hands before I could deliver the club head to that bit of grass now only "ahead" of the ball - right back to the same yips that drove me out of the game 25 years ago. Well, I "usually" trust it. 🙂 Turning "through" the chip or pitch requires near constant reinforcement. With an open-faced sand wedge out of the rough, it's two and a half inches inside the ball. . .

James, at 2:02, you can clearly hear someone cry out, either in pain or frustration. Hit by a ball, perhaps? Or maybe they are a good old in-to-out shanker in need of this standard-defining lesson. Who knows? 😂

I could use some drills focusing on proper body rotation when chipping. I am convinced that not properly rotating during the chip is the root of my sh%$K problem.
