- Honest Review of the Melanin Multi-Use Softening Leave-In Conditioner on my Type 4a/4b Low Porosity Natural Hair. Keep in mind this is my honest review of the Melanin Multi-Use Softening Leave-In Conditioner, in which I discuss how it works in my hair, you may have a different experience. I do not think this leave-in worked well on my low porosity hair. I have type 4 natural hair, but I honestly feel like your hair type will not play a role in whether or not this product will work for you. However, your porosity will definitely play a role in how your hair will respond. In this video I show you my failed styles, I will discuss what I think are pros and cons, I will give your my theory on why this conditioner didn't work in my hair, and I offer what I think could be a great solution. I will be using this product as a deep conditioner to see if my hair reacts better, make sure you are subscribed so you don't miss out! I'm so glad I watched this video. I was really sitting here confused trying to figure out why everyone else seemed to love this product but It's just not doing it for me. Then I looked for low porosity specific videos and now I'm like okay it's not just me LOL. And lowkey, I hate the smell. Got me walking around smelling like Orbit gum 🤣
MykeeYoung yes! I anticipated different results as well, that’s why I was like “I gotta make this work!” But we have to listen to our hair. The scent killed me😭.

LOVING your honesty! I don’t watch anything by Whitney because our hair has nothing in common, but EVERYONE either raves about these products yet can’t even properly detangle on camera , or plays nice without really saying what issues they’re having 🤦🏾♀️

I'm really glad I saw this video. I'm 4c but also low porosity and both the leave-in and styling cream left my hair dry and tangled. I tried two different ways and still got the same result. Everyone loves it and I couldn't figure out if I was just using it wrong. The protein makes all the sense!

My hair is 4C. I bought all three of the products and I feel disappointed with them. Barely moisturizing at all. My twist out felt like hay and was tangled as well. I saw another review where the reviewer said being heavy handed with the product is what caused that for her. So I'm going to try using less. I gotta try it again because I can't waste $50. 🤷🏾♀️ 😭
Stephanie Spencer I understand how you feel! It is a double edge sword because on one hand you want to support the people you admire, on the other hand you gotta listen to your hair. I feel like the twist elongation cream is top notch, but best when paired with a moisturizing light leave-in. The multi-use leave in is a hard no for me as a leave-in. If using less works better that’s great because it will allow your products to last longer🤞🏾. xo
My hair is low porosity and I bought the leave in because my shampoo, hair masque, and my gel are bomb. I just needed a leave in. This stuff right here..... omg I have never had so much ease detangling, the conditioning is phenomenal for me. That being said, for let's say, winter? I can def swap this out with something else because in the winter I need something heavier. I think despite both of us having low porosity, our unique biochemistry is the deciding factor.

Yes I have high porosity, thin hair, medium density. I love it as a deep conditioner for softening/protein but not for a leave-in. Thanks for the honest review.
Alexis Matthews I thought the leave-in would be a better option for high porosity hair, but I did not consider high porosity girls with fine strands. That just goes to show how much our hair characteristics determine how well products will work for us. Thanks for commenting💛.

Kelly Kel Yeah it can be hard having low porosity hair, but once we understand what our hair does and doesn’t like it makes styling and choosing products so much easier.
I have high porosity and did not like none of the three products for all the reasons you listed. Had high hopes. Even the though the oil was too light for my taste, it was probably the best of the three.

@@xorocky yeah I'm not sure what it is about the formula but they did not leave my hair feeling soft or moisturized. And I really hated the smell.
I’m high porosity and Lord it was AMAZINGGGGG. Best Wash and go and dry twist out I’ve ever had. But did not do anything for my baby girl. Had to rinse it out. She is type 4 who is low porosity. Curls blueberry bliss leave in and Camille rose almond jai twist butter was better for her.
Just goes to show how different hair types respond differently. Total normal if products don't always work. Thanks for sharing.
I have low porosity hair as well and I only use this multi use leave in as a pre poo that’s it! And if I want a detangler in the shower after my shampoo. For the twist out I use the elongating cream from the same brand. The oil is used for pre poo as well it doesn’t seal anything for me.

My thoughts are that Whit knows her hair really well, so it would make sense that the products work best for people who have a similar hair type to hers. So I have high porosity 4a/3c hair, (I'm really guessing at the type, the front it more wavy than curly honestly) and before using the leave in I've never been able to get good curl definition from any one product. I would have to load my hair down which was so gross to me so I just gave up. The first time I used this along with the cream, my hair was so damn defined I didn't know what to do with myself.
That being said, I bought the whole line but I really only like this product that I use as both a conditioner and a leave in, and the oil. The cream flakes so I use the smallest amount possible and I'm actively looking for something else. But honestly, I feel like my hair is the healthiest it's been in a very very long time, it feels hydrated and strong. But like you said, we're not one size fits all, hopefully with enough feedback her next launch will include products for the low porosity ladies that don't need all the protein.
I also reeeaaalllyyy hate the scent 😣

I have mainly 4c hair. I’m not completely sure about my hair porosity but I think it’s high/normal porosity. My hair likes this product whether I use it alone or with other products. I hate the smell of the product and I take breaks from using it in my hair because I feel like there’s too many ingredients. I found that the twist elongated cream does nothing for my hair.

I have thick high porosity hair and I didn't love this line... I finished 2 Bottles of leave in, 2 full jars of twisting cream, and 2 bottles of the oil so I've given Melanin a chance. I even ordered twice to give it another shot. Also I have 4c hair similar to Whitney’s hair. This should have worked for me lol
I Liked:
-The Clean ingredients.
-The leave in helping with tangles(melted them away)
-Super soft hair
-Loved the oil!
I didn't like:
-The smell of the leave in.( I was so annyoned with the spearmint smell)
-No hold to my twist out. One I separated my twists it was a frizzy fluffy mess
- No moisture rentneion. I used the LOC method and even tried the LCO method... My hair was still dry by the end of the day. Maybe due to the protein?
-My hair looked dull looking
Now that she dropped the African black soap line she said that should help with the other products working... Maybe i’ll give it another shot but we’ll see.
She’s still my favorite UA-camr as she was the first person to teach me about my natural hair when I went natural 8 years ago!

Wow! You described my hair lol I know this is an old post but it sounds exactly like my results with these products. The cream left my hair dry and frizzy very quickly. I tried it many ways.
What products have worked better for moisture and definition?
I have dry, low priority and fine strands. I have to use aloe vera juice warmed up before any product. I just ordered this and will keep this video in mine..Thank you

What do you recommend for someone with medium porosity and fine strands? My hair is definitely 4c and easily grabs on to the other strands which cause knots and breakage. My hair must maintain moisture and I cannot do wash and go's at all.

There are a few brands that I love for their moisturizing properties; “As I Am” is excellent in providing moisture, I also really like “True By Made Beautiful”. However, you honestly just have to try products, techniques, and styles out yourself and listen to your hair. 4c hair loves to hug and be all wrapped up into each other (which you already know and experience), so definitely do stretched styles. You Tube channels that I believe in, trust, and would recommend with type 4 hair would be Green Beauty and Naturally High, definitely check them out.

I just used the leave-in yesterday as a leave-in and I'm kinda disappointed. I normally use Africa's Best products for my hair and was wondering if Melanin Hair Care was worth all the hype around it but it's not. At least for me. It's sitting on my hair and not absorbing at all. There was no slip when I detangled even when i used lile 6 pumps. I lost SO much hair. But i bought 3 bottles so... I'll try the other ways for it; rinse out and deep condition, but if it doesn't work with those either then I'm probably gonna have to give my bottles away. I wish I had known before i bought it about the protein bc i think that is the problem but i dont know. Gonna leave it one more day to give it a chance and then I'll rinse it out bc I hate how it feels rn.

@@xorocky I have an update! So I ordered the oil as well despite my initial thoughts on the leave-in and when I use the two together, I get much better results. I don't think this brand is the kind that exclusively only works when paired with products with the same brand just based on other reviews, but I think that's the case for me. I do have to really work it into my hair (both of them), but once I do, my hair feels and smells great. I've just used them both together today so I'll be sure to update again if anything changes.

Yea I'm not crazy about the conditioner. I can use it as a Leave-in during the summer only. I had to use alot for detangling, not good for detangling at all 😫 maybe I should try as a rinse only. As i did it as a DC and Leave-in on wash day

Maria Retawgood products that say “for all hair types” are a whole a** lie. To be honest I feel like it’s helpful for me to do these types of reviews for all my sis out there that struggle with knowing whether products will work for them. I’m glad you already know what works for you tho.
How can you figure out if your hair is low porosity? I can’t really tell. And wait so do the cream and leave-in both have protein in them?
I think the best way to tell is to observe how your hair responds to water & products. When you wet your hair does the water absorb right away? When you apply product does it sit on your strands? Or do products really absorb into your hair quickly? Are you prone to product buildup/flaking due to a lack of product absorption? Answering those questions will be a good starting point. No the cream does not have protein in it, only the leave-in.
I finally purchased. Not sure I’ll use it as a leave in. I cannot get past the smell.
I think that scent is love or hate.

The leave in has protein so that’s probably why it doesn’t work well , I have low porosity too so I won’t be purchasing but the cream🥰
Hello ..I’m late and the leave in didn’t work for me either .. I am using it as a cowash because I ordered 2 bottles ! When I combined her cream with leave-in I got residue .. I like the cream and oil

Oh God, you’re not alone. This leave in is terrible. My hair was so tangled, it wasn’t moisturizing, and the smell is weird. It frizzed up so quickly. I wanna throw it away so bad but it’s so expensive and it will feel like a big waste.
ERGSEG yes, I just had to give it away because it just didn’t do it for my hair.
