- Solo survival is always hard when you don't include water. But we had a challenging but enjoyable trip. Making fire, finding drinking water, foraging food and fending off insects for 3 ..ish days. Hope you enjoy this one.

Damn when you picked up those +30% movement boots you found the the prickly pears instantly.
Glass bottles are awesome.. in the absence of fire, leaving water out in full sun will allow natural UV to partially sterilise the water 👌🏼

Bro, I started kayaking a few years ago and almost completely stopped using my boat.. it's amazing.. so much more in touch with the water.. the ducks and fish and frogs are at arms reach.. iv been right next to all sorts of animals.. access stuff you can't on foot or in a boat.. like a mountain bike for the lake! Or ocean.. you won't be disappointed no matter the level you get into it at.. the cost of getting into the sport is minimal if you don't go crazy but, go crazy! It's dope

you definitely made the right choice to have the small sips you did, a small amount of bad water is often much better than no water when in a pinch. I've had to make the call a couple times in my years of hiking experience. it felt pretty spooky both times I had to resort to it... but you do what you have to, and every now and again you have to make the call.
In my experience, you don’t have to “keep an eye out” for things like Giardia or Cryptosporidium. They tell you about their presence pretty damn fast. 🤢
I learnt that lesson the hard way from about half a litre of tainted water in rural Fiji. I was violently ill within about 12 hours and didn’t fully get over it for 6 weeks. I left it for about a week hoping to get over it, but went to the doctor after the diarrhoea became bloody. Tested positive for both.
@@stuartcole4845 it varies, depending on the person and the quantity quality drank. sort of like food poisoning some cases are much worse than others depending on the variables. i had giardia once, and it came on much slower over the course of days. but my brother had a similar experience to yours, it sounds. every body is different I guess. as for worms, or other parasites... it can vary HEAVILY. those cases are often much more difficult to notice, and can be pretty severe.
Yep. I’ve had the “beaver fever” before from some tainted water on the backside of Dolly Sods. I’d been drinking out of that exact same spring at the exact same spot for 10 years and never had a problem. Then while packing in/bow hunting by myself, it got me. Violent cramps/vomiting/diarrhea. Was about 3 weeks before I felt 100% again.
@@ElkinsEric yeah i was doing a 7 day hike in Arizona back country, and there was a section of desert I had to cross that had no water sources so I watched the weather and planned to go through the area on what was supposed to be an overcast day. but the clouds never formed like I wanted them to, so the heat spiked hotter than I planned for the water I was carrying for the stretch. i found some standing water in the crack of a rock... it wasn't pretty. very brown. but I was sort of left little choice. no symptoms showed up for 5-6 days, but then it whooped my ass for 2 weeks straight. still feel like I made the right call, but I did pay the price for it. its an experience I think every adventurer experiences at least once.

I know right! I slowed the video down to the slowest settings and it still took me like 7 or 8 tries to get it paused perfectly, looks like a picture from the simpons with text saying, fire, fire, fire, fire.. lol in the nuclear plant possibly?😄
@@odjob360 you can pause close to it and use < and > keys to go frame by frame in either direction. Oddly, I paused it bang on in one try.

Damn Rod that is cool ya’ll have prickly pear cactus down there also. I live here in South Texas and prickly pear was a staple of the native diet here. The Hispanic culture also uses it a lot also, I love them cut up and mixed with eggs.

That was 100% my experience backpacking on the Great Lakes island systems (apostle islands, Northern Wisconsin. Lake superior) it was damn cold at night once my fire went out and I literally got up and broke camp just to warm up moving around
Experiences like that are the challenges our bodies have evolved to cope with and some think we need to experience to stay healthy.
Amazing how you got that fire started with only materials around you, extreme patience and a never say die attitude. I thought that ember would go out for sure. Wow!
I love that you found water and a pot straight up. Humans have really left a mark on the world.

As sad as it is, I tried going solo camping on a beach and living off the ocean but I live in Israel, so there’s no really secluded or empty beach. Second I pulled the tent up a bunch of drunk groms started chucking empty beer bottles my way and shattering said bottles all around my area.. Devastated, I had to fold my gear up and call it a day.
For now, I’ll stick to making casual fishing content.
On another note, Rod! Thanks for uploading once again with perfect timing.

That was enjoyable seeing the fire come together. I like how that piece of board worked as a wind deflector, heat reflector and a cutting surface and little table...very cool! Hated seeing the tip of that Spyderco break off.
Water in a glass bottle in direct sunlight will sterilize after time, so those glass bottles you found were priceless!

I love how after you get the fire going the video becomes a lot easy going, when before it was a bit scary. ALSO (edit) that cactus is called nopal, and it's extremely nutricious, people that have a few dollars to eat a day buy nopal and cook chile and tomato to make some salsa and eat it with tortillas, in mexico it's very common to find it.
Just checked this and youre correct - in Australia we know it by its common name 'prickly pear' and is an introduced species that causes a major problem for farmers and has required massive eradication programs for decades. Few people would know its actually edible and a source of water though.
yes they are very good for you, ive never tried them. in arizona we call them prickly pears

In my culture we call the cactus nopales! You can remove the slime by boiling it in salt water and it's eaten in many different ways. My favorite is chopping it up then sautéing it with seasonings. It's amazing as the "meat" of tacos.

Great stuff, Rod. Cheers, mate! The sun can purify water if it is in a clear bottle. Takes about 8 hours, but the UV from a strong sun will do the trick.
@@TubeMeisterJC Agree its not ideal but @Mezafo makes a good point if you can't get a fire going (or find a pan). Recent research has shown UV - C light is one of the most powerful sterilisers and anti-virals known and is now increasingly used in hospitals and labs around the world. Also the component of sunlight that causes sunburn and skin cancer!

In Mexico, eating cactus is pretty common. A lot of people will just make a salad with tomato, onion, cilantro, and the nopal. It’s actually really good

Was thinking, in a "real" survival situation I would take the "broken" engine off the boat, bring it further up and flip it, then use the boat for shelter. It would create a waterproof roof, keep the wind away and create an enclosed space which will be a much warmer accommodation. May keep the bugs away too.
especially if his engine would not start and his radio for help failed - he could sleep inside the dinghy too - I think this man could survive for weeks
If the bugs are really bad you can do what Australian aboriginals did - place the entrails of fish on top of your head and top it up at every opportunity.
True story - the 'grease' eventually covers your body in a thin film and the best insect repellent. Most bugs will not go anywhere near fish because they are the major (only) pedator for most.
The main chemical is also concentrated in the 'slime' the covers fresh fish so that would work as well.
Sounds gross i know but preferable to being attacked by swarms of sandflies and mossies for hours and days on end.

That green cactus you grilled it's called Nopal here in Mexico and it's a very emblematic food that it is also in the mexico flag Simbol, we eat it as you do it, grilled, boiled, mixed with other veggies. Etc, and it has a peculiar Taste, that not everybody likes it, im glad that you tried and like it.

For the cactus pad, I recommend trying to scraping off the spines with a knife before cooking so you don't have to eat around it after cooking and there will be less waste

In Mexico the eat nopales(cactus). You find it on menus at all legit Mexican food spots in the US.

Awesome video just a small tip since I grew up with those prickly pear cactus in a lot of my home meals and camping trips growing up, you ideally wanna get the skinnier and more vibrant ones after they’ve been basking in the sun say at noon they’re less bitter and have more of the actual flavor and of course a bit of salt if you have nothing else otherwise a garlic and chili mix coat really makes them spark though they’ve got a few more prickles the big fat ones are older though the one you had actually look alright
