Hey The Economist, thanks for sharing, it's my first time hearing Bannon speak. I wanted to share some feedback on the interviewing format, pivot to a LONG FORM conversation where: 1). The interviewer doesn't constantly interrupt to move on to their next question. 2). The interviewer allows the interviewee to articulate their entire point and asks follow up questions to whats been said. 3). The interviewer doesn't mention what they agree or disagree on, it's not supposed to be a debate.
"The interviewer doesn't mention what they agree or disagree" You obviously missed the bit at the beginning of the interview (2 Mins 10 Secs) where she says "I absolutely disagree with you" so sooner had Bannon made the point about illegal immigration suppressing wages of workers in host countries regardless of race and creed. Thereby, suggesting that she is actually pro-illegal immigration.
Open borders functions only in the absence of a welfare state. That's why immigration into the US before 1924 functioned so well. Thousands of people RETURNED to their countries of origin, just as Syrians & Iraqis are doing.
Aleksey was saying they shouldn't do that, if that isn't clear from reading his comment. That the interviewer, if actually conducting and interview and not a debate should clarify, not debate. I don't necessarily agree. But I would say that an interviewer should at least allow the interviewed to make their point without interruption.
Aleksey Soldatenkov Exactly! These “journalists” are not actually journalists. They are cheerleaders for political positions, paid to defend the position, as a zero sum game.
I don't agree with Steve on many things, but did she invite him to argue and tell him off, or hear him out? It seems unprofessional of her to always push back on whatever he says
This Brit is trying to lecture Bannon, look at your country lady - your country is in ruins!! When Bannon lists all the bailouts and help for Britain, she say "oh I want to go to something else." What a joke!! Bannon laid it down cold. When he said "throw the bums out" he was talking about Justin Trudeau wasn't he.
@@Leto2ndAtreides Like I will tell you one thing that Trump is absolutely banking on. 3 Republican presidents over 20 years have tried to get Congress to reduce spending but it has not worked. So what we do is simple, get congress to have a better borrowing ability and make sure all our debt is owned by US citizens/banks and not foreign governments.
Steve should be teaching the youth of the world foreign affairs. All citizens should watch the citizens. I have tried to watch everything he puts out. I have yet to see him talk foolishly. He is pro (your nation run by your people).
Her idea of an interview is she lectures you on her worldview, asks for a response, then quickly cuts you off, never letting you fully refute her arguments, and says its because she wants to move on to something else. Rinse & Repeat the same tactic for the entire rest of the interview. Absolutely insufferable.
Well, we know the final answer to the question. Trump forced their hand. All this talk of the "great contributions" and "net gains and benefits" brought by these masses of 3rd and 4th world immigration were all proven bogus when Trump said he would buss large amounts of detainees to "sanctuary cities". These same people who quoted word-for-word what this woman just said about the quality of the benefits from these immigrants and "diversity is our strength", had an absolute fit about the potential of all these "quality" refugees being shipped in to "contribute" to their city's economy and society. Suddenly, they were all talking about being broke and going broke over social programs. The "tax paying gains" mantra seemed to disappear very, very quickly. Yeah, we know....
After watching this interview plus the Bannon-Frum Toronto debate I now know EXACTLY why the Left does not want Bannon to talk -- because he destroys the competition.
Mike Viall you noticed how it is exactly like trump in 2016? Absolutely the same... His one liners, his sharp attacks that totally surprise opponents. Attacks that basically need a lot of time to counter which you dont have. And hand over new opportunities to attack
In fairness, this is a very shallow format, 15 mins does not let people have a real conversation. Also she wanted to trap him and give him no time to respond though.
"This woman just changes the subject each time she loses an argument.' The effect is very weird and strange because she ought to be interviewing Bannon in which case she cannot win or lose but it is obvious that it is not an interview but instead it is a debate under biased circumstances and she argues with him about everything, then she does in fact deftly change the subject when she loses.
😂😂, yes I will start reading FT and economist like Steve Bannon for facts. Not going to buy them I will read in the library. Bannon is amazing bury crony elistict capitalism. Free and fair market
I think it was a great interview. She did great too. And Bannon said he still reads and loves the Economist. If you learn anything from him, it is to interact with all sides regardless of the different views. I wish people on both sides would remember this.
She obviously told all her friends she was going to go after Steve and forgot to just interview him, and she comes off angry, stupid and very biased. Out of her league completely
@@NathansHVAC even black people are starting to figure out this whole "racism" issue is little more than a redirect so we don't realize the corrupt elites are robbing us peasants blind.
That's exactly right bud! This lady always trying to bail out each time she is grounded by her own question went back to her big time. I just hope a Jack belt hollow block drop down from heaven straight to her head to wake her up =)=)=) stupid interviewer as she is so capitalist.
I respect that the Economist had Steve Bannon on, but I wish the interviewer weren't so needlessly hostile. This would have been much more enlightening had she tried to engage in good faith.
I think it's actually a good thing that she is using that much pressure. Many people, especially politicians, expect a weak interviewer and just some space to get more publicity. If we want something interesting, we will the interviewer to challenge the other person's ideas.
A class of people who have greatly enriched themselves at the expense of the middle classes every since the fall of the USSR (and who probably ruined the chances of the peoples of Soviet Union to establish a viable democracy). She represents this people.
Bannon is racist and the opportunist, immigrants are the solution, they work, they consume, a.lot of Americans doens't want to work in construction, landscaping, etc they wanna easy jobs, or not even work.
@@assistidor2023 is your definition of racist anyone who doesn't align themselves with respect to your narrow minded world view, because I didn't notice a single argument he made which is bigoted towards any anyracial groups
As a long time Economist reader it is shocking to see the interviewer so disinterested in pursuit of the truth (not to mention the opposing view), but only in forcing upon Bannon and the viewers her worldview. What a shame! I am not a fan of Bannon policies, but he appears to be the only adult in the room here.
Wow. Scary. If you aren't confident in your statements don't make them. We need honesty and thoughtfulness. Sadly you proved that you haven't spent the time thinking.
+Rusian Sudentas ... Rusian - dude, this person just asked you a perfectly reasonable, unbiased question, that (presumably) came from a place of genuine curiosity, and interest in your world view... and your response was to claim that a public forum used by billions of people, wasn't the right place to engage in this discussion, effectively shutting it down before anyone can possibly challenge you, or learn from you. this sounds familiar... during the lead up to the trump election, i used to get into debates with retarded leftists who would make baseless comments or accusations all the time. when i asked them to provide evidence to support these claims, they would often reply with some version of "Oh please - I'm not going to waste my time educating and explaining myself to deplorables like you. The evidence is out there, if you want to find it, google it." which of course is essentially another way of saying "i don't have jack shit to back up what i just said, and i'm going to look like a fool when this guy calls me out for making shit up, so i'm just going to run away now"... and that's pretty much exactly what you just did...
Brett Gozdeck - You read my mind! All I want to do is try and see where peoples thoughts are based at. The worst thing for society is people who take a side and have no grounds for doing so. Truth and reality are what will set us free. There have been a few leaked videos lately showing the left admitting to being paid to be the top posters on Trumps twitter so that people think there is a blue wave. Aint gonna happen. People want jobs and transparency. I believe we need 100% complete transparency of all government accounting. These fucktards are running loose screwing the working class.
this interview positively changed my view of steve bannon, unfortunately i don't think Zanny Minton did a good job in trying to understand his world view as she stated was her intention
Bannon may or may not be a good guy but he's winning the public because he understands what's going on and he has better arguments. The globalists are shockingly out of touch.
Horrible interviewer. Treated it more like a debate than an interview. It's funny cause she talked like everyone wanted to hear what she wanted to say, but it's supposed to be Bannon expressing his thoughts 😂
@@HarmeetSinghWaliaHSW lmfao, everyone knows the economists globalist views. The point was to get Bannons perspective. You can't do that if you conduct yourself the way this horrible Interviewer has. Don't you think it's about time we have a voice that's concerned with the working class? One that doesn't just say "Tough luck, we sent your middle-class jobs to China, so we could increase profits from decreased labor costs". So what if electronics cost more, everything else will be real close to cost, and everyone can have single family earner income levels again. That's what MAGA means. Without these completely fraudulent "free trade" agreements, maybe we can get our wealth that we bled out back.
+Harmeet She kept interrupting him with so you're saying style mischaracterization of his positions. She finished the interview with a defiant challenge suggesting she still had a naive faith in "free trade" although that does not exist between China and the rest of the world.
Yes, but not in a good way. He’s a poor representative for anyone’s point of view because he’s a very impolite conversational bully. Very, very rude man. Thumbs down on this gasbag.
Bannon is racist and the opportunist, immigrants are the solution, they work, they consume, a.lot of Americans doens't want to work in construction, landscaping, etc they wanna easy jobs, or not even work.
I would rather have Steve Bannon as President then Trump. Its not Trumps policies, its how he attacks any institution, etc, and how vile he is in how he does it.
@@ToddtheExploder wow bannon was rude , the charector less women called him names including a chauvinist without allowing him to complete his statement . later she agreed with the very same statement ,thus show how uncivil and nasty she is . If he ever needed to demonstrate just how intent the elitists were on bringing him down, this interview just did it. Loved how he spoke about his daughter by the way.
I didn't like Bannon based on what I'd read about him in the global MSM.......I now realise that he's a very, very smart man with some very good ideas........TE editor is an embarrassment.
Ariel B Cohen I agree with you! Bright man. Which is why this “journalist” is so defensive. The radical feels threatened by independent thinkers and by conservative common sense values.
A suggestion: Take what you said here "..based on what I'd read about him in the global MSM.......I now realise...." and apply that to other concepts you've read about in the global msm.
I never liked him either, I love the fact that he tells it how it is and to wake people up and question what's really going on. I've seen other interviews and checked others and he might be right
Let the man speak. Shame on you Economist. This interviewer was terrible. This magazine is going downhill. Another partisan bs newsource. Shame was one of the few good ones left.
@@fionadefreyne8573 How can you properly challenge someone's ideas when you don't allow them to properly articulate them like in the majority of this interview? Im not saying Brannon is a saint but he seemed to have some well thought out things to say on China and trade. Shame we as an audience didnt get to fully listen to them because the interviewer was more interested in being as combative as possible to appease a certain crowd.
This lady is very rude in running the interview. Also, she doesn't think the worker class has Rational Thought. Well, she lost all credibility. Steve Bannon is not perfect by any stretch, but she made him look like a pure genius.
Look I don't sympathize with Bannon, but this interviewer was unnecessary hostile. So hostile that she actually raises her voice at several times. It's unprofessional.
Never been so fully on the side of he elites. Now the devils pact between 'finance' a, silicon valley and politicians, aims to make serfs of the rest. All he media is the propaganda machine now.
I wonder what he said. I don't think the question was good though, since Bannon is a self-described capitalist. Bannon is a capitalist, but he has talked against crony capitalism / Corporatocracy, and Ayn Rand libertarianism. Makes me question if the audience member was just looking at workers rights (or 'power') in this black and white socialism / communism vs capitalism view (where capitalism just equals a Corporatocracy or extreme neoliberalism basically), and where such ideas of worker rights or power can only be socialism / communism. I think it's very likely this is how Bannon answered it. He didn't list a country, and just told them the above. Listen to what he says after, and he is talking about historical workers rights / power (particularly focusing on blue collar), in the context of democratic + capitalist America. i.e. the social contract. I recommend people read 'social contact theory'. The idea that it has been broken isn't what I would call controversial. I know many economists / commentators who talk in terms of a broken social contract. The promise of rising living standards with each generation etc. The debate at present is more on how to amend it, what paths to take etc.
How could the social contract possibly be repaired without the use of pro-social governing policies of the type that are promoted by socialist parties? I think it's blatantly unreasonable to pretend that capitalism does not inherently include the mechanisms that result in such phenomena as 'crony capitalism' or to pretend that capitalism and neoliberalism are not ideologically extreme in their own right. Especially in the context of typical Western political discourse and media coverage of public policy, where the smallest policy concession to the benefit of the broader population is smeared as some sort of brutal authoritarian act of wealth seizure. Everything is 'sOcIaLiSmZ!1!', every policy that benefits the broader public is treated as a partisan issue, even to the point that objectively sensible measures like Medicare for all can't even be seriously discussed without disruptive concern trolling about 'cost'. I mean, 'crony capitalism' is not a distinct system in any way, it's just a term used to criticize the real-world effects of neoliberalism. It is not reasonable to treat every systemic (and predictable) failure and flaw of our neoliberal world as a perversion of the system. 'Capitalism' isn't even an economic or governing system at all, it's just a propaganda term used by the wealthy to pretend that they own concepts as basic and nearly universal as markets.
@Natural Man lol but she isn't in charge of the world's economies! What you should have said was "that's why The Economist has been going down the drain recently" The Economist should now be called a magazine instead of newspaper, since a lot of it is opinion based...
she's insufferable. She came in with an agenda. He foiled her at every turn. She freaked out and wouldn't let him finish any question that she herself asked.
Harmeet Singh Walia, I've seen Bannon in similar interviews and that's how he answers the questions. Eventually what he's saying leads back to the original point/question, but it seems they just didn't have the time. Like others are saying, this was more of a debate than an interview.
I'd hardly call it an interview. It's a weak hatch job. Terrible journalism. Her bias was frothing from her mouth. But it was great to watch her out of her depth and struggle against him.
To be fair, the title does call it a debate. But that's still pretty generous given how bad the whole dialogue was... SOOOO many "last word/snide little quips" on her part. I hate that kind of garbage.
I am so sick of these shrill British experts on what America should and should not do when their own country is in such a bloody mess. She must be stressed judging by the sweat under her arms. I have more and more respect for Mr Bannon the more I hear him speak. Hearing his background and the fine daughter he raised, I have even more respect. He shredded this nauseating and arrogant woman.
Ron M If you don’t like non-Americans commenting on American politics, then what do you think of Steve Bannon touring European countries (and Australia) to talk about their politics?
thomas neale same reason immigrants do most construction work today. Immigrants are animated and determined to make money. Always have been. And no, they are not cheap.
thomas neale Immigrants are more ambitious. Always have been. Americans that move to other countries are also more ambitious than Americans that stay in the US.
I've no particular love for Bannon, but this woman was simply unprofessional and insufferable; cutting someone off constantly shows contempt for them. Do your job as a moderator and challenger properly woman, don't just attack attack attack, listen and challenge and you may learn something. Until then, prepare for more Trump-type events; to fail to learn from history is to be doomed to repeat it (2016 election, brexit, Salvini; the list goes on).
@Thomas Gardiner Here we go with whining and moaning about women and generalizing them based on stereotypes in Hollywood movies. You Trump, Bannon, etc supporters are the lowest life form on this world. Truly. No intelligence, no integrity, no empathy. You have literally no quality of a civilized human being.
@Thomas Gardiner You think youhave hit the nerve therefore you are right? That is some strange logic going on there, but that is not surprising for an alt right Bannon supporting nut with an IQ that does not exceed room temperature. What you spewed out is a bunch of stupid nonsense and that would hit a nerve in every civilized, fully developed human brain.
NoneWhatsoever I agree that his words were ugly, but it does seem as if the Cathy Newmans and this woman are particularly confrontational in a grating way. I'm not saying women need to be soft little creatures cowering before a man. but I do think some of the particularly rude ones get a pass because they are female. A male who acted this way would probably lose their job.
Amazing, you just stereotyped, grouped and labeled a bunch of people who you do not know because you don't agree with them. Hmmm, you sound like the lowest life form m8. I find it hilarious you go on about being civilized and integrity, and empathy but a civilized being who is intelligent, and has integrity and empathy would never say the things you just said. If you honestly think Bannon is alt right, you need to get with reality because populism is literally about giving the people more power. Alt groups left or right, want more government. The only thing you've proved today is that you are narrow minded.
This is one of the worst interviewers I've seen. calling him and his ideology names because of challenges your own it's not journalism, and certainly it's something I do not enjoy watching.
Yes,.....These extremist on the left lost any integrity. They are just in the business of slander and smear. That's why they are loosing everywhere in the world.
Steve Bannon is a very smart person and I am Polish American from Washington DC US. Steve Bannon is US patriot and for a good of the people in the USA and the world.
fraser b She even interrupted him during questions from the audience. They are asking the guest, Steve Bannon, a question not interviewer lady. She just couldn’t stop herself from “correcting” his answers.
I don't agree with him but I want to hear what he has to say. Quite frustrated the interviewer used it as an opportunity to attack him, as if it were a debate rather than an interview.
It would have been better if he was not questioned or challenged and allowed to make his hateful and prejudiced comments without being interrupted or questioned.
Good for you for listening to opposing voices and views. I believe that more people should. It helps them grow and helps them understand where the other side comes from.
People are complaining about her way of interviewing Steve Bannon. If she allows him to speak the logic of his arguments will be so overwhelming that she will have nothing left to debate on. She has to create a straw men and go for personal attacks.
Common Truth. The reorientation of the world economy will be painful. But are tariffs and flipping leadership comments that helpful? Deeper issue than tariffs. But I understand Bannon’s view as they’re an ends to a means.
she's insufferable. She came in with an agenda. He foiled her at every turn. She freaked out and wouldn't let him finish any question that she herself asked.
Bannon has an agenda that is clearly stated and fully disclosed from the start. He's not a journalist, nor even a pundit. He's a political strategist who does a damn good job of stating his beliefs. Beddoes purported to be a journalist doing an interview. It immediately became clear that she was there to debate and advocate, not to interview. She came with insufficient firepower for the battle. He stayed calm as a cucumber and schooled her. If your whole argument is "Muh feels tell me DAS RAY CISSS! Ergo YOU RAY CISSS!!!" then you've lost the battle before the first shot was fired.

She is just so hopeless with raising her voice as her only tool. And this is your editor-in-chief - getting quite deservedly shown her place. What a disgrace. I hate myself for having thought about buying a subscription for the Economist 5 years ago.
Since I was in graduate school in the ‘60s, I have been reading The Economist, and in my studies looked at back issues all the way back to pre-war. It is not the same newspaper that it was fifty years ago. This woman is an ideology.
The interviewer near the very end says; "we will have you back in a few years" summed it up so well. She was all about herself while also pandering to her audience. Bannon was prepared for this and beat her every move.
Which, although tempting to whip out, I would refrain from charging. Either you can take the heat or you get out of the kitchen (i.e. sexism usually means you lost in some way and don't want to accept responsibility). See also, HRC.
False. It wouldn't (factually) be sexism, since it would be exact same treatment. And it wouldn't be regarded as "sexism" by the radprogs, since Stevia Banana is not a woman. She's totally a neo-nazi, and neo-nazis aren't women. QED, destroy her!!!
Thomas Gardiner I don't think you or people that you love have ever been in a situation where you cannot change the way you are treated. Let that sink in with the understanding that the women in your life cannot do half the things you do because they are women. To think otherwise is naive at best, sexist at worst
I have come a little late to this interview. Minton-Beddows is absolutely appalling here (and as I have watched the Economist deteriorate under her editorship, I suspect elsewhere too). She is a prime example of the the party of Davos arguing for the status quo almost exclusively because it pays well and has the distinct advantage of not having to be even close to the consequences that these policies she supports cause. Also, if M-B does not understand that large corporations lobby for, write, endorse and capture regulation as a way of keeping smaller competitors at bay, then she shouldn't be in the job. Furthermore, the wilful blindness shown in the Economist concerning the dreadful effects of globalism on ordinary workers in the west is, quite frankly, unforgivable. Finally, it will indeed be interesting to see which world view produces better results. But the inescapable truth is that the party of Davos world view, if unchecked, will as sure night follows day, result in a Chinese world hegemony. When that happens I am sure M-B and her ilk will be just fine. The rest of us? Well we'd better get ourselves ready for serfdom. As an aside, The Economist is sounding ever more like the opinion column of the The Guardian. Shameful.
I thought she said she wanted to understand Bannon’s worldview? Instead, she attacks him from the word go. What happened to interviewers just asking questions.. genuinely enquiring rather than making contesting statements. What is this, an interview or a debate?
I don't agree with Brannon in general but if you invite him on your show, let him speak. Talking over him defeats the whole point of having an interview.
Steve banon has now become a bit more sophisticated. In the past, he was worried that 10-14 percent of CEO's in Silicon valley were brown (he talked to Trump about this on radio) and he was for totally ban of Muslim people no matter what merit they bring. Now, he has changed his views a bit. Its good for him. I personally do not think Trump is anti immigrant or racist. Infact, Trump is very pro immigrant but people do not realise that.
I agree with you but looks like you also have been somewhat brainwashed by american media. I think every nation has a full moral right to say what people they want in their country. Many muslims do not take islam seriously, it is more depend on the place where you come from. For example, muslims from America, Canada, UK, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc can easily adapt to western culture whereas muslims from Saudi, Iran, Iraq will less likely to adapt to western culture. It depends where you come from rather than whats your religion is. Syria just banned Hijab in School, colleges, etc ( I am sure you do not know this coz mainstream media does not tell you this). Most of the muslims women do not wear hijab anymore, because of globalization and internet, people all around the world are becoming more open minded and that includes muslims too. I am Hindu myself and I do not agree with what Islam says but I do not know why some people by default are bigoted towards muslim people just because they are muslim without actually knowing their belief. I think we all should stop watching cnn and fox, and research ourself and make friends from all places and ask questions. Talking about steve banon, he is not against islam but also against anyone who does not white. Trump is not a racist, he was manipulated by Steve Banon during his campaingn.
What a bizarre "interview." The so-called interviewer set herself up as a debater against Mr. Bannon, yet also presumed to be the moderator. Therefore, she cut him off every time he started to effectively counter any of her arguments. He nevertheless wiped the floor with her.
Zany: "I'm trying, i'm trying to change the subject!" Steve: "I know you are, but you're going to have to own this one." Proceeds to dismantle the argument piece by piece much to the consternation of Zany whose only defense is more stuttering, sighs and eyerolls. The classic non verbal retorts of those without an argument. To which Steve should have said, "Zany, you're a big girl, use your words." So that's it. Sums up yet another defeated "Hit and Run" interview attempt by a woefully unprepared interviewer .
I never heard Steve Bannon speak before. Seems straight forward and applaudable. I had to thumbsdown due to the interviewer though, enough Cathy Newman type interviews.
Can that awful Interviewer SHUT UP. Her hostility towards Bannon was mind blowing We are looking for intelligent debate - not open hostility to the person being interviewed. Awful interviewing style. I expect far better from The Economist.
elly sheraton your mistake is expecting better from the Economist. They are shills for the current system, which is under threat from populism / nationalism.
John Mulligan you might like living in an echo chamber but I want to hear both sides. I watched the whole thing with great interest and wasn’t surprised to see how aggressive the interviewer was - it’s good to see because she just feeds the perception about how threatened the globalists feel right now. Perhaps you are concerned about protecting the establishment and preventing people hearing from the heretics - how very authoritarian of you.
I'm ceartainly no fan of Bannon but tuned in to listen to his arguments. This is not a interview or conversation but a squabble. I stopped watching after 9 min...

From a long-time reader of the Economist, not a good look for the magazine. Know the interviewer was the editor-in-chief and not a professional interviewer, but she unfortunately comes across as unbelievably flustered, self-righteous, glib and overly-emotional. Repeating the talking points about globalization and immigration used in 1999 will certainly not stave off a populist wave in the west. You kill bad ideas with good ones, and it is frankly quite disturbing that ostensibly smart people with the best pedigrees and educated at the best institutions are so mired in derangement and failing to adapt to this new reality that 2016 brought on. This thought vacuum created by the ineptitude on behalf of our elite is very troubling to me.
You can't say things like "unbelievably flustered, self-righteous, glib and overly-emotional." That is sexist. She is professional, factual, and likes to show her knees
The Economist should fire this arrogant, over-educated, narrow-minded "Editor-in-Chief". TE used to be a great magazine. Now a highly-biased manifest of the global left. No balance.
Michael Hick isn’t bannon a goldmansachs crony? I don’t understand American politics anymore, it makes no sense. He is a globalist that made a lot of money being a globalist but now its wrong? I’m very confused about this
No one really takes the Economist seriously. It's a bit like the FT these days the people writing for it actually think they've got something important to say.
Chief editor's performance is disappointing. She offers no logical argument, keeps interrupting her guest's argument. Is this the best the British intelligentsia can offer?
damafuful Jeez... seems like Western civilization is in far more rapid decline then I already presumed it was... How is such a thing possible? It really blows my mind. A (formerly) respectable and sort of academic magazine, and it’s being run by this person? Who demonstrates a total lack of civility and an intellect barely above room temperature. It’s truly a bit disheartening...
I'm not just a lifelong subscriber (literally, both my parents have had The Economist subscriptions since I was born and when I got my first job I bought my own, still read it cover to cover every week) to TE but also agree with their views most of the time and have always detested Steve Bannon but....Zanny you got absolutely destroyed in this debate. Bannon never lost his cool, never talked over you, and came across as likable and sensible...you were the opposite. It may be TE's forum but you're in his country as what he painfully (the first time I scoffed, by the end I was almost nodding in agreement despite being on TE's "side") called a "Davos elite". You had SO many opportunities to nail this guy (I was going to say 'idiot" but frankly I actually respect him more than I ever have after watching this) for his ridiculous views but you basically just shouted him down every time he was getting the upper hand, or changed the subject but then accused HIM of changing the subject, made no inroads on extremely damning comments he's made, and just generally bungled what should have been a bloodbath for your newspaper. I'm extremely disappointed. I'm not cancelling my TE subscription or becoming a Trump supporter but this was a big win for Bannon seeming like a voice of reason a big loss for TE looking wildly out of touch.
And this is why having him there at all was a mistake. Because putting up a cool show of lies and scaremongering does not make you right, but apparently makes you look right for too much of a crowd.
123axel123 oh, if you can arrange us meeting and give me at least a couple of days to read up on all the things he has been wrong about, I would be totally fine with that.
Hey The Economist, thanks for sharing, it's my first time hearing Bannon speak.
I wanted to share some feedback on the interviewing format, pivot to a LONG FORM conversation where:
1). The interviewer doesn't constantly interrupt to move on to their next question.
2). The interviewer allows the interviewee to articulate their entire point and asks follow up questions to whats been said.
3). The interviewer doesn't mention what they agree or disagree on, it's not supposed to be a debate.
"The interviewer doesn't mention what they agree or disagree"
You obviously missed the bit at the beginning of the interview (2 Mins 10 Secs) where she says "I absolutely disagree with you" so sooner had Bannon made the point about illegal immigration suppressing wages of workers in host countries regardless of race and creed. Thereby, suggesting that she is actually pro-illegal immigration.
Open borders functions only in the absence of a welfare state. That's why immigration into the US before 1924 functioned so well. Thousands of people RETURNED to their countries of origin, just as Syrians & Iraqis are doing.
Aleksey Soldatenkov it's exits on the independant channels online which have taken over the mainstream media. You actually get to listen to people.

Rinse & Repeat the same tactic for the entire rest of the interview. Absolutely insufferable.
Other than gets destroyed when you try it on an electorate. Lol.

We have to move on now... pffff. Why do we have to move on?

31:47 minute. A guy from the audience asks a question to bannon about giving an example and The Economist edits it out by jump cutting his answer.
I saw this too, I wanted the full answer. It was a decent question.

She is the Editor in Chief at The Economist, so it's not her job that may explain it.

The reporter is highly overated, why want she let him speak and finish his talk. That is not journalism, that is farce.
Unprofessional woman and also rather angry. Small minded and rude. Not to mention, wrong.
This lady is simply doing a REVERSE PROPAGANDA ! GOOD JOB Bannon, keep it up.
Every time they interview AltLite,Altright and Altreich.
Classical Liberal,Libertarian, Populist,National Conservative, National Social.
Ron Paul,Donald Trump,David Duke, Patrick Little
Bannon earned my respect in this interview
I wish she would stop interrupting him.
When he constantly goes off-topic, he is asking for interruption from any responsible journalist.
Anybody in the AltLite,Altright and Altreich.
Classical Liberal,Libertarian, Populist,National Conservative, National Social.
Ron Paul,Donald Trump,David Duke, Patrick Little
She is just so hopeless with raising her voice as her only tool.
What a lovely humorous caring bloke he is. I think I have just become a big fan of Steve Bannon.
the reporter from Economist does not want intentionaly to understand Bannon's message.
the Economist has attended every Bilderberg meeting since the 80s
She understands. She's trying to keep the people from understanding.
She's just another political activist.
What message ?
Bannon became loosing patience. because their knowledge and logic are not not at same level
Hehe. She is like a Snowflake in Hell. Bannon is too good
The interviewer near the very end says; "we will have you back in a few years" summed it up so well. She was all about herself while also pandering to her audience. Bannon was prepared for this and beat her every move.
Thanks Steve, brilliant, ghastly interviewer.
If Steve Bannon was a woman and the interviewer was a man this would be a canonical example of sexism
As a feminist, it pains me to say you're right.
Thomas Gardiner
You are paranoid "mate". Only men can be Sexist. Just like only whites can be racists.Own it.
Thomas Gardiner
I don't think you or people that you love have ever been in a situation where you cannot change the way you are treated.
What is this, an interview or a debate?
oh yeh just let this right wing ideolog say whatever bullshit he wants un challenged
I don't agree with Brannon in general but if you invite him on your show, let him speak.
Talking over him defeats the whole point of having an interview.
I agree. When you get questions such as why is your economic policy better than ours? You can't answer that question in 30 seconds.
21 minutes in and I'm sure I heard a witch laughing in the audience. Even she thought the woman interviewer was a joke.
This woman is just not up to this interview ...This is the level of The Economist-globalist magazine. Read communist....
Typical leftist interrogation by psychological terror. Kudos to Bannon for his patience
What a bizarre "interview." The so-called interviewer set herself up as a debater against Mr. Bannon, yet also presumed to be the moderator. Therefore, she cut him off every time he started to effectively counter any of her arguments. He nevertheless wiped the floor with her.
Zany: "I'm trying, i'm trying to change the subject!"
Steve: "I know you are, but you're going to have to own this one." Proceeds to dismantle the argument piece by piece much to the consternation of Zany whose only defense is more stuttering, sighs and eyerolls. The classic non verbal retorts of those without an argument. To which Steve should have said, "Zany, you're a big girl, use your words."
So that's it. Sums up yet another defeated "Hit and Run" interview attempt by a woefully unprepared interviewer .
I never heard Steve Bannon speak before. Seems straight forward and applaudable. I had to thumbsdown due to the interviewer though, enough Cathy Newman type interviews.
Smac I recommend other recent Bannon interviews. This one was insufferable due to the inquisitioner
And, having watched Bannon now, after leaving the WH, realize his genius!
What an elitist snipe; Steve had her squirming!
That blonde is bought and rude and disgusting- I admire the patience of Bannon
She's from the Economist.
It's Rothschild owned.
And so are the people who work for them.
@@-ColorMehJewish-
I am so sad to see how brainwashed Europeans are
@@ajarivas72 - Amen to that.
Then again, there's some pretty oblivious sheep in USA here too.
It's not even Left vs Right anymore -- it's the gullible and stupid (What we call the Left in the US) versus the cautious and apprehensive (us) lol. Every day I wake up and it feels like Im in a mix of Groundhog's Day and the Twilight Zone -- b/c things seem the same every day but as my day goes on, everything seems to get even crazier
She is the editor of The Economist. She stinks!
@Khadr Trudeau
America should defend her borders, not other countries borders. Israel has a wall paid by Americans and Europeans. How come Americans cannot have their own wall?
MSM portray bannon as a firebrand but i find him very calm and reasonable
"The difference is that we use facts"
Says the women representing an entrenched class that has gotten every major political and economic event in the past decade wrong. Terrible personality. Terrible interviewer.
Stalin called these educated class: useful idiots. And he's absolutely right, I'm seeing so many of them among the liberals side
You can't say things like "unbelievably flustered, self-righteous, glib and overly-emotional." That is sexist. She is professional, factual, and likes to show her knees
Bigotry of low expectations is real.....
Bannon just destroyed this chick
It's a damn shame he's not in the Trump Administration anymore
Ancient Ruins Official Yep, I completely Agree with you. The Swamp just can’t handle someone like him!
The Economist should fire this arrogant, over-educated, narrow-minded "Editor-in-Chief". TE used to be a great magazine. Now a highly-biased manifest of the global left. No balance.
no such a thing as over-educated LOL but yeah shes an idiot.
"Over-educated"? Lol
Global Left?......grow up will you.......TE is a supporter of the Wall St/BOE criminals...they're far right...
Steven K Bannon was right then and he’s right now. That woman was condescending and incredibly rude.
Chief editor's performance is disappointing. She offers no logical argument, keeps interrupting her guest's argument. Is this the best the British intelligentsia can offer?
damafuful
Is she really the chief editor!? Are you sure? I find that difficult to believe...
According to Wikipedia:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zanny_Minton_Beddoes#Education_and_career
Yes.
No. She's part of the new euro-elite, not especially tethered to any one country. Watch or read Douglas Murray, Peter Hitchens, Jacob Rees-Mogg.
damafuful
Jeez... seems like Western civilization is in far more rapid decline then I already presumed it was...
Michael Hopkins i cancelled after 22 years. She does not even acknowledge that increase supply of labour and price goes down.
And this is why having him there at all was a mistake. Because putting up a cool show of lies and scaremongering does not make you right, but apparently makes you look right for too much of a crowd.
Максим Расчупкин you should take the debate. B is Intelligent and you can't hide
123axel123 oh, if you can arrange us meeting and give me at least a couple of days to read up on all the things he has been wrong about, I would be totally fine with that.
Love him or hate him. He’s right.
Beddoes: "accusatory statement"
Bannon: "Ok well what I mean is-"
" *WE NEED TO MOVE ON! WE NEED TO MOVE ON!* "
