After a career in the Navy, investment banking, and Hollywood, Mr Bannon co-founded Breitbart News in 2006. He became the chief executive of Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign and subsequently served as White House Chief Strategist from the inauguration until August 2017.
Since then, he has set up an organisation called The Movement, which is designed to promote right-wing economic nationalism in Europe ahead of the European Parliamentary Elections in 2019.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.o...
Boos at the beginning, no boos at the end. Bannon is a straight up guy. Great talk. Respect to Oxford Uni for this.
The higher up you go in "education" the more you swing radically left. The more you swing radically left, the less free you become. The less free you become the lower the quality of your life will be. It's only when outside speakers come to campuses that the students are exposed to any ideas other than radical left wing ideas.
@reversecourse I think you have been indoctrinated to a specific, incorrect view of the left. Quite a few of Bannon's statements here were hard left, such as breaking up Facebook and Google and better, putting it into a public trust. As Bannon himself admitted, plenty of lefties are economic nationalists - and what he misses is that the left has a long tradition of anti-government libertarian movements. Even looking at Corbyn in the UK his platform is giving more power to the people and investing in the community. Identity politics and other elitist sideshows are a liberal game, not the left game. As a leftie I want to decentralize the government as much as possible, I want national sovereignty and respect for the concept of self-determination. I am not alone - and no, we do not like Liberals. Hell, as a Norwegian both the solid socialist parties here reject the EU categorically for their globalist and liberal capitalism. And notice who plays identity politics - the establishment. It is a cheap and lazy way to keep power and distract from the real issues.
I actually agree with many of the stances Bannon put forth, which was a given, National Conservatives are against predatory globalist capitalism, and that is a uniter, but I will disagree aggressively with many of his other policies. Nationalism does not fix capitalism, the elites he speaks of seeks refuge in it. There is a reason why those in power will, if they have to, pick populist right candidates, hell, even fascists, over a leftie any time, because they know their financial interests are safer with them. Bannon and Trump are not rocking the boat for the wealthy. They may make the world slightly better for a portion of the working class, which I applaud them for, but the issue will persist and any wins will be temporary. For true liberation we need to properly decentralize both the government and capital and create a world where people own their own labor, rather than having to rent themselves to the rich.
@@Kraisedion Interesting post, right up to the "renting themselves to the rich" part. I find that an odd way to put things, but I might not be following your analogy. Commodity labor in a way is renting themselves to the economy in exchange for payment. As you specialize your skills you become more in control of your labor, though in most countries you still owe a portion of that labor to the state. So how do you get to your conclusion? For background, I have seen people come from next to nothing and achieve significant wealth due only to their ambition and drive.
I've seen folks with a typical employee mentality think that the "big boss" doesn't deserve what (s)he makes because they do all the work, yet those people are in every case I've ever seen easily replaceable. The owner, partner etc. was generally the one (or two etc.) that took big risks, had the most responsibility (think payroll, insurance, legal) and worked the most hours at least for the first many years.
I only take the time to write this as you clearly have the ability to reason but I see this typical employee mentality often and it's a trap. I've also seen what people can do once they shed it.
If you're talking about central banking, that's another story at another level, but I don't think you are.

Oxford Union does not fear what other platforms will not hear.
That is (sadly) the truth, but should not be a "special" thing to celebrate. I always thought it was the University's mission to explore all ideas. Now it is precisely the opposite and it is getting worse by the day.

It was not a speech, but a lesson that you will never receive at Oxford.
I remember a time where I was on interview committee for a very important position at our company, and we were down to two individuals, and one was an Oxford man, and that is rare in America. I talk like Steve and the Oxford candidate was so very one dimensional. There were around ten occasions where he had beliefs about the US that post interview, we agreed he might apply for a job back at Oxford.
You people still practice the caste system and that is why Steve was similar to a stun-gun to your bizarre beliefs.
I personally eliminated the Oxford man, and hired a man with an Associate Degree. Oxford produces nothing special in their graduates other than a rung on the ladder in your 19th century caste system.
Eighty percent of the students have alumni parents, or a boatload of money.
@@GSPDUKE It's obvious you took pleasure in eliminating this candidate because of your native anti-intellectualism, born of envy. This undercurrent in American society has always been present, and only its sway changes from time to time. You feel culturally inferior and you're not wrong.
These students all asked excellent questions. You just don't know it.
I found the students questioned very disappointing.
Bannon goes on for 40 minutes about big issues like sovereignty, economics and jobs - then the students immediately opt to ignore it all and focus on anecdotal quotes / off-hand comments.
Yes because they have nothing else very meager facts and evidence but they still run with it because they're lemmings brainwashed lemmings
its because they are NPCs and cannot think for themselves. They are like bleating sheep transported out of the world of 1984 into our world. They lack the capacity of independent thought and just spout off big brothers ideas.
@James Registe Here's a database full of all the promises he has delivered www.promiseskept.com/
@James RegisteTrump has done extremely well in terms of keeping promises- He promised to renegotiate trade deals and he has done that- he has kept us from getting more involved in Syria, he had cut taxes and incentivized investment in the US economy the only area he has not completely delivered in is on getting a wall built he has worked to build parts or improve them and has aggressively used his executive authority to use the US military to patrol it.
The students don't know him, and came prepared with questions based not on what he said in the presentation, but what the media has said about him. They only know what the media says about him, and when the media lies, lies, lies, and lies some more, well.. the kids become brainwashed.
Bannon answered every question thoroughly, directly, and in an earnest spirit. Rare.
I found Bannon's responses and behavior refreshing even though I disagree with some of his points. For all its prestige, Oxford's student body seems like a monoculture of socialists who are way more emotional than logical.
The first student brought up a contradiction in Bannon's rhetoric concerning "Judeo-Christian" values, and his response was a little too rambling and defensive.
The second student did the same, highlighting actual contradictions in what Bannon is on record as having said. This is classically Socratic. The answer was very interesting, because Bannon's *best* ideas are NOT the ones that were implemented. Travel bans, sure. Accountability for the economic destruction wrought by Big Money? HA. Trump depends on Deutsche Bank. Bannon also used a slogan word in his answer, "triggered." Not a good sign.
The third student gave him an opportunity to comment on the demonstrators, who were the real deplorables in this picture. No problem. Bannon again gave an answer that shows that his best ideas are NOT the ones that are implemented. The student then pointed out that those who have attained political power are publicly distancing themselves from him, and asked him to comment. Again, interesting. Bannon did not mind the question.
The fourth student began by taking a stand for freedom of speech, then asked an excellent question about Bannon's view of Trump's and the Republicans' election prospects in 2020.
The fifth student first thanked him for staying over, to talk to them. Then she asked a very astute question about about political trust. Bannon appreciated the question, and was enthusiastic about answering, because it gave him a chance to talk about the things he is most passionate about. She made a counterpoint, and he tried to play folksy. He used another trope that she did not, "sorry for mansplaining."
The sixth student said that the economic progess was not thanks to Trump, and that Trump did not, in general, solve the problems Bannon correctly highlights. AGAIN, Bannon's best ideas were NOT not not implemented. And Bannon DOES have lots of good ideas.
The seventh student asked a very open-ended question on immigration, allowing Bannon to express himself on a matter he is passionate about, and show off some more of his good ideas. Which go nowhere. See a pattern here?
So, who was so disappointing? I thought it was illuminating. Bannon is interesting to watch. Nothing ever comes of the good policies he endorses -- especially on taxes! Ha.
You do know Bannon was pardonned for his alleged role in federal wire fraud, correct?
Sad
@@l.w.paradis2108, it's easy to shine the spotlight on a person covering so many different subjects, in such a short period of time as he was given, and to lambaste him for not satisfying your skepticism... perhaps though you should try to understand more fully his points of view before repudiation.

I don't agree with everything he said, especially his justification of not removing stories he new to be fake news from his website, but i have nothing but respect for the way he presented himself.
Too bad he did not clarify living wage as he basically attacked the "elite" then compared Oxford students to Russian serfs prior to name dropping West Point University. Good to read the definitions part of a document that details law and regulation.
He did speak on living wage, as one that is merely sustenance, not even a holiday, a night out… only “getting by”. He said it was basically getting by, but only barely. A stressful, barely getting by. Which is not “living”.
@@ellejrrn Do you think he meant to tell Oxford students they were barely getting by with no holidays, or a night out because they are poor? I like to think of Oxford like a community college in the sense of just that, community. So is it your perception that Bannon was connecting but not pandering to the students based on economics while leaving living wage up to an interpretation?

@@nancywalker1325 How is that pertinent? The Trump DOJ, headed by Barr, indicted him. Not exactly a crowd hostile to the man, one would imagine.
Um, maybe read the indictment? It's online, public info.
I agree and disagree with various things that Bannon believes, but what matters is that I ensure he speaks his mind. If i know what he is thinking; i can debate with him. If I have him de-platformed; how can i know what he thinks? How can i agree or disagree with someone if i don't know what he thinks? Thank you for providing Mr. Bannon a platform, and for promoting fair discussion.
@Paul Temple Yes, i think his main proposal of a Globalist Elite- the dubbed; "Party of Davos", with branches in all areas of society; is unequivocally true. I think people like Bernie hint at agreement, but don't come-out as such for fear of being labelled "fascist, Alt-Right, Far-Right," et cetera.
@Paul Temple Do you have any understanding how the liberal globalist cult suckers people in?
I don't think the protestors have ever listened to anything he's said. They think it's a badge of honour that they haven't listened to him...
These people protesting are extremists. It's frightening.
This tends to be a problem with modern day political discourse, especially on the left. Censorship for people they disagree with, and if they do receive a platform smear them with as many words as you can to ensure they and their subsequent ideas are discredited going forward.
"If I have him de-platformed; how can i know what he thinks?" You could start with the million op-ed pieces he has been given in Time, the New Yorker, the WaPo.. you could look at Breitbart articles from when he was editor - you could read his books - you could read speeches from when he was Trump's advisor and since. It is not exactly difficult to find out what he thinks. You could also look at the political movements that he assists and funnels money to (the FN in France, AFD, Generation Identity, Pegida, Victor Orban and so on) and see what their histories are, and what their stated goals are, which might give you an even better idea than listening to Steve Bannon's own dissembling about his political goals. He, of course, will say that everything he does is good and justified.
Simply brilliant speech and debate about current world status and events.

Trump depends on Deutsche Bank. Bannon also used a slogan in his answer, "triggered." Not a good sign.
The third student gave him an opportunity to comment on the demonstrators, who were the real deplorables. No problem. Bannon again gave an answer that shows that his best ideas are NOT the ones that are implemented. The student then pointed out that those who have attained political power are publicly distancing themselves from him, and asked him to comment. Again, interesting. Bannon did not mind the question.
The fourth student began by taking a stand for freedom of speech, then asked an excellent question about Bannon's view of election prospects in 2020.
So, who was so disappointing?

And it's only going to get worse!
@King Leopold This is completely false!!! Post WW2 the UK set up nationalized programmes such as the welfare state, NHS, Social security, social housing etc and paid for this with progressive Tax, the highest Tax Bracket at one point was 90%. In the 80's we had Thatcher who deregulated and opened up the markets, got rid of social housing and chipped away at much of the 'safety' net created for us after WW2. Blair continued to chip away and in 2010 we chipped away even further with Austerity. The highest Tax bracket for higher earners is now 40% and Corp Tax is 18%, lowest its ever been.
I somewhat think Bannon is hitting the problem on the head - the economy isn't working for the majority! The problem IMO is a complete lack of investment in public services, deregulation, cross-border free-market liberalization across markets. Basically, I think the problem we have in today's world is the result of 'free markets' not that we should further open up our markets and make them even freer.

CIVIC NATIONALISM - The cows aren't breeding fast enough, so you admit a controlled number of various wild animals into the cow pens. It's fine. This is a farm of immigrants, and they just need to embrace our cow values. None of these animals produce milk, and they consume massive amounts of hay. They breed so quickly that the cows are milked dry in order to feed the other animals young. To the point that they are unable to have their own calves. Predatory animals begin killing and eating the cows, but this is blamed on intolerance, and measures are immediately taken to combat cow privilege. Including changing the definition of milk, which is found to be an outdated social construct. You begin harvesting and packaging urine as "milk" and the animals become infuriated and begin to destroy the farm you sneak away during the chaos and flee to Israel.

The first 28 or so minutes when Steve was speaking uninterrupted was epic! The students can't even begin to "get" what Bannon is talking about. He left them in the dirt in the first minute.
Listen again. You're on the wrong horse if you can't pick up on the intelligence of the youth.
@@alanconlan8337 Can you give a single instance where your claim is instantiated? I concur with Paul, these lefties have nothing but vague feelings to back up words they can't even understand. The girl near the end basically said that even though more people are voting democracy is eroding. She didn't even understand the basic concept behind "drain the swamp" which adresses exactly the problem of low legitimacy. Trump is more democratic than the progressive elites that try to socially engineer the world. More people voting means less democracy? How stupid do you have to be?
@@ChristIsKingPhilosophy Your reaction demonstrates we are losing the ability to listen, not just listening from our socially constructed bases, but listening from the heart of our uncontaminated intelligence. The youth are being molded away from the heart into the social construct which is becoming more and more aggressive, divisive and unintelligent. Steve Bannon's performance is a typical example of this divisiveness in action. His communicative methodology is manipulatively aggressive. Subdued minds will cower to this and be led in the direction of the aggressor. Note the current similarities to Hitler, a man who was an artist, writer, orator, even a romantic, yet molded into an aggressor beyond all measure. Now the US social construct has produced not just one but many Hitlers. If we do not see it in time to correct it, the next climateric will be the end of humanity. Our youth is our only hope. They are the least contaminated and closest to pure intelligence. We need to listen to them and not impose our stupidity upon them.

Steve Bannon is a well versed man, and is completely on point… He will be known as an American Hero…
Not a good advert for Oxford. The students seem to feel that they are intelligent but their questions didn't provide any corroboration.
The sad thing is that compared to most colleges in the West (especially in the US), this actually is a GOOD advert for them, because the alternative is rapidly becoming setting the campus on fire and organizing balaclava-wearing mobs to attempt mass-violence in the hopes that whoever they've been instructed to hate gets offed or seriously injured, thus ensuring that they become a twisted parody of what they're supposedly struggling against.
A couple rude questions asked by some hubris-laden students who think coming out of a Social Justice 101 class makes them smarter than a guy who's been out in the world and done great things for decades is actually pretty good in comparison.
They are the children of globalists.
Intro/Questionaire only watches CNN/BBC and reads Quillette to re-ask for the thousandth time debunked statements about President Trump. For people that speak English (and possible arbiters of correct English) they do not understand context. Horrible. None of the questioners listened to the talk.

@@FelixBat lmao. This is the first time I'm hearing and seeing this analogy, nothing mainstream about this. It does sum things up pretty well. If you don't have rules and regulations, chaos ensues. Nothing is fair in life, but we can all make choices, first individually, then collectively to make things better. Jordan Peterson states it best. You need the left and the right, to work together. Sometimes one side is right and sometimes the other is. Together we would have a much better place. Still not fair, still not prefect (nothing every is nor will be, that's why you have nets and plans to deal with problems), but it'll be the best possible outcome, if not a step towards better.
@@FelixBat yeah. The same mainstream media that attacks Trump and his supporters 24x7, kicked him out of media platforms. You are one delusional prick

Advice to the young: "Shut your mouth and open your ears." That goes for all of you all over the planet.
you racists hehe
So, who was so bad? I thought it was illuminating. Bannon is interesting to watch. Nothing ever comes of the good policies he endorses -- especially on taxes! Ha.
Envy of the young is always such a sad stance to adopt. That is one war you cannot win. Thank goodness.
Good advice. God gave us one mouth and two ears for a reason. Talk less and listen more.

Steve Bannon is a GENIOUS I have said this before and I would love 15 minutes to talk to him and I am 72 years old and a retired working-class man who believes wholeheartedly in President Trump.
He contradicts himself repeatedly, and one of the kids picked it up. He deflects, contanstly. Steve Bannon is a master at manipulation and deflection. He gets caught in a lie or massive contradiction, borderline hypocrisy? "Listen... Nobody's perfect" or "Actually, the left..." - He, like Trump and many of his supporters, aren't the answer. Why? -- Because even if they DO HAVE SOME great political ideas and solutions they think they can do no wrong and that is a VERY dangerous government.

they are using mainstream media to brainwash these kids by repeating same lies over and over...!
that's why bannon's side is more dynamic and creating more successes and value
Well, since so many people call Trump a racist, even foreign politicians, it kind of proves he is a racist - or at least is being given bad advice on policy by far-right swamp monsters in the WH. His father was actually taken to court over racism crimes, and Trump himself has been sued multiple times for the same discrimination. He surrounds himself with racists and white nationalists, and has called himself a nationalist. Although to be fair, he's probably too stupid to understand the word.
@Kevin Burrow Ironically, Trumpanzees are the very definition of NPCs. They don't think for themselves, they're ignorant, uninformed and respond to input from Fox News and Trump's daily lies (his lies are so transparent, and easily proven that a 5 year old would be embarrassed by them). The people who still support Trump now are either brainless zombies you see at rallies, with their "made in China" red hats, cheering every stupid thing he says, or racists and far-right nationalists/Neo Nazis, who just like the fact Trump is an obvious racist. If you can't see that, you're an NPC too.
