  • A drivers eye view of the charming and beautiful Llanberis Lake Railway. Travel with us over the entire route on this narrow gauge railway in North Wales. There is lots to see including the coupling and uncoupling as our driver runs round the train to change direction. High definition video and sound add to the atmosphere.

    I visited the line several years ago in October. Not unexpectedly, the weather was wet; so the guard escorted my wife and I, and a mother and her child who were the only other passengers to our coach with a very large umbrella. It is a charming and very interesting railway and just as worth visiting as the other narrow gauge lines in Snowdonia. I wonder what the workers at Hunslets in Leeds would have thought if they'd been told that the little utilitarian locos they'd built for the Welsh quarries would be tourist attractions a hundred and more years later.

    Wonderful video. I first visited this little railway (correction Narrow Gauge railway) when I was 15, on a Youth Hosteling trip to North Wales. That was back in 1967, so many years ago. Little has changed and it is good to see that these snippets of bygone days are still with us. Don, your videos are great. I see them on a 4HD screen, and the definition and colours picked up by your cameras are amazing. I really enjoy these trips to a country which I left so long ago. I now live in Canada but grew up on the LNER main line in Thirsk, 12 mins north of York at 125 mph.

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  2 роки тому

      You’ll have seen the videos covering Newcastle and Middlesbrough no doubt 👍. Getting the footage to an acceptable standard has been a long process. You’ll notice the early attempts were very wide angle and often drab colours. I established that GoPros handles the motion best but it’s only the later models that give a more natural perspective and vivid colour so they’ve evolved with me. I’ve now got three cameras (two out with Freightliner) and we are getting good footage. My mate Vinny at Freightliner is now expert at filming and goes to the same trouble of keeping glass clean and the cameras mounted properly etc so it’s all come good. Transport for Wales and Metrolink did their own filming with my cameras and you’ll see it’s pretty good even on a large screen. I can’t really go to 4k because on these long films the file size is immense and as you say it is acceptable enough. All the best Richard 👍

    A beautifully crafted video. Thank you, Don. Reminder of our own ride many years ago. Apparently the Padarn Railway to Port Dinorwic was laid to a guage of 3feet when it was first built.

      Was it three or four foot? There are remnants of it at Cei Llydan.

    Thanks for that visit to a beautiful little railway - a bit different from you usual offering! Good to see the power cables were buried, as they can be a real eyesore. I have fond memories of North Wales as my grandparents lived in Barmouth in the 1950s, but my only train rides in the area were the full sized versions, on the long-gone line from Barmouth to Dolgelley.

      Much appreciated Geoff. I have been invited to film the WMR but that was before covid. We’ll see what happens with that. However, in terms of revenue (which all goes to charity) it really hasn’t performed that well. I expected great things from it but it’s nowhere near as good as freight. It does make a nice change though. I wonder if they got the dog back 😳

    A most enjoyable video Don, covering a magical part of the country. The steam engine is fascinating and so well run. Again, the info and the history of the area is so very interesting. I(Ian) am learning so much of areas of the UK that I will not be able to visit. So,thank you so much Don for all your time and effort in putting these videos together.

      No it’s not Bob. Neil Ferguson Lee has already invited me to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway for a future video and I have several colleagues at TPE who do volunteer work at the Welsh Mountain Railway who have offered to arrange a shoot. We just need this confounded pandemic out of the way.

    Great film, really enjoyed the ride.
    The railway has changed alot since I was there some 20 or 30 yrs ago. On a par with the Bala lake railway, although that should be expanding in to the centre of Bala soon. Another film perhaps. Well done. 😊👍

    Glad to see you are still around and kicking mate, I was getting a tad worried for you.
    It's sad to see the rust build-up on the rail surfaces, it's mute testament to the hardships being endured by all preservation rail endeavours during this unprecedented time.

      Hope all is well with you Insurgent. You know that railway was in constant use all day and as you can see it was dry so all I can think it it’s an effect of the flat rail head spreading the weight.
