    06:25 Upper section (going up)
    11:35 Upper section (going down)
    16:55 Lower section (going down)
    Enjoy the full journey up and down the Great Orme and see the contrast between the upper and lower sections. See the only cable hauled tramway that runs on public roads anywhere in the UK, and that is just the first section. Once we reach the half way point you can enjoy the open headland and the views out over the Welsh Mountains, you also get to hear the cable pull the trams, the pulleys turning and see how it operates. The beauty is you get to enjoy it all again on the way back down, only with better views! There isn't another railway like this anywhere in the UK and it should be on any bucket list to go and visit, prices are well worth it and the Orme itself is worth a visit.
    The Great Orme Tramway is a cable-hauled 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) gauge tramway in Llandudno in north Wales. Open seasonally from late March to late October, it takes over 200,000 passengers each year from Llandudno Victoria Station to just below the summit of the Great Orme headland. From 1932 onwards it was known as the Great Orme Railway, reverting to its original name in 1977.
    It is Great Britain's only remaining cable-operated street tramway, and one of only a few surviving in the world, and it is owned by Conwy County Borough Council. The line comprises two sections, where each section is an independent funicular and passengers change cars at the halfway station. Whilst the upper section runs on its own right of way and is very similar to many other funicular lines, the lower section is an unusual street-running funicular.
    Whilst the street running section resembles the better-known San Francisco cable cars, its operation is quite different in that it adheres to the funicular principle where the cars are permanently fixed to the cable and are stopped and started by stopping and starting the cable, unlike San Francisco where cars attach to, and detach from, a continuously running cable. As such, this section's closest relatives are Lisbon’s Glória, Bica, and Lavra street funiculars.

    How utterly fantastic! This reminds me greatly of the cable cars we have in San Francisco: particularly the first, street running section. Of course, those cars have the ability to grip and release the cables to control their speed, and thus are able to make stops along the streets, but the tech is very, very similar - including the pulleys for the cables and rail design in general.

      It does have a very San Francisco feel to it, it is on my bucket list to vet over to the USA and see for myself one day when the world settles down a bit. I am glad you enjoyed this, thank you for watching.

    Have walked up the hill a few times, love how quickly you get away from people!! Never been on the tram, your video going up the hill gives a good impression of how steep it actually is in places, photos never do it justice. Amazing that pro cyclists rode the entire thing in a couple of minutes.

      I do a bit of fell running in Lancashire, I have thought about having a decent go at running up it when I am next there. Distance wise it's not actually that long, but the incline is just a constant slog

    On the first part of the descent, the driver in the corner of the screen looks like he's been superimposed like a presenter on top of his video presentation.
    How lucky there just happened to be a bit of dual track where the two trams met!

      @TheTouristLine  2 роки тому

      I have never noticed the angle on the driver but that is all I can see now!
      The trams always meet at the same point, they are attached to one big loop of a cable so always pass at bang on the middle

      They are all provided with big thick modern coats these days branded up with the tram logo etc (I only remember this because I left my coat in the car not knowing how cold it would be at the top and spent half the day wishing I had one) but you are right, on a bad day I can't imagine that is a pleasurable experience.

    As good as any in the world or even better.. Had a good rail trip up the Conwy Valley line, taxi from the station (£3.80) and then on the tramway.
    Lucky with the weather on a rain filled week on the North Wales narrow gauge steam railways. Even just before the school holidays they were full and the improvements since the 60's and 70's were amazing. Of course, the EU helped.

    Great video, thanks for sharing. I used to go to Llandudno in the 1970s on holiday with my parents, this brought back some good memories. I actually remember there was a cable attached to the blue poles and the trams had pantographs. Do you know why this is no more? Also, at the very beginning of the video you'll see a square-looking white house up to the left distance. This was a guest house called Tudno House, and it's where my parents spent their honeymoon in 1958.

      That's a brilliant story, I have just checked out the house and it's nice to know one of the memories attached to it. There used to be a cable but it was purely for communication (if there was an obstruction the pulley has to be stopped centrally). This has been replaced with modern mobile communication.

      You have stumbled upon my great dilemma when making these videos. I need them to look good, and I need them to show off a location, but I also need to leave people wanting to visit in person (as visitors keep these places open as we all know), without taking too much enjoyment away from the people who can never really visit for various reasons. It is a balance 😂

    Excellent! Thank you for the video of the entire system and the last short section showing the cables and pulleys working. I would have liked to have seen the cable traction wheels in the engine house but I expect they were out of bounds? I’ve never ridden on the tramway but seem to remember that the trolley pole on the roofs of the trams were actually just used for the telephone between the driver and the traction cable controller?
    I didn’t see any of the famous goats…but that might be because numbers have been reduced by sending some to Bournemouth where, I can tell you, they’ve settled down on our steep cliffs and are very happy indeed. Magnificent animals and so relaxed! Thanks fir the video again, I really enjoyed it! Rob, in Bournemouth.

    • @TheTouristLine
      @TheTouristLine  2 роки тому +5

      Thank you for your kind comment! The engine house in the middle does have a glass viewing section and you can see the big cable drums for each side. Sadly as I had to run between the two trams and attach the camera etc I didn't have the time to film the middle section. As I had to have special permission to attach my camera I had to keep to specific trams. You are 100% correct about the trolley pole, it was always purely for communication and electric lighting before batteries took over.
      The goats are a sore point, the drivers told me they had seen some earlier that day so I was full of optimism but sadly they didn't want to make an appearance. I have been lucky enough to see them on a previous visit with the family and they are magnificent animals. I was unaware some had been sent down to Bournemouth but if they have been sent to East / West cliff I can picture them enjoying it, you definitely get better weather than the Orme!

    £8.50 for adults £6.50 for children and family tickets available that I think are valid all day.
    A beautiful pier with friendly staff a short walk away from the embarkation station, beautiful views from the summit and if you are travelling into or out of North Wales along the A55 some fantastic gentle family friendly, sandy beaches well worth stopping at along the way/way out. Each to their own but imo far better than spending £400+ for a family of 4 to take a 2minute zipline ride at Bethesda.
    Edit to say: Of course the fantastic copper mines near the summit as well!

    Kia ora,greetings from Levin,New Zealand.Wonderful video.The tram from the town,is that powered from the central rail? Or cable below the track? The cable cars(funicular) still have the overhead pole attatched,are they used elsewhere or is that from a former life? In Wellington we have the cable car which travels from Lambton quay up to Kelburn and the museum which houses the old trams.Wellington looks a lot similar to Wales ,mountainous surrounded by harbours and coastline but fewer old buildings and more temperate climate.21C here today.

    • @TheTouristLine
      @TheTouristLine  2 роки тому

      The tram is powered from the cable, each section is pulled from the middle central station and strictly speaking it is two different funiculars. The tram did used to have an overhead cable but that was purely for communication, if there was an obstruction on the track the tram had to signal to the central station so they could stop pulling the cable, as there is no clear line of sight down the track from where it is winched.

    Llandudno was the place for our annual holiday when I was a kid as my father was a tram fanatic. I’m sure the Great Orme Trams had a trolley then. I think the trolley was for lights and communication. When did the trolleys go and how is the lighting powered now?

    for a few minutes my brain couldnt work out the track arrangement for the rails and cable in the upper section of the lower half. but watching the tram come down the hill i was able to work it out. though a question still remains, the passing loops are not dead center between the halfway station and victoria station and halfway and the summit so is the cable continously moving and the trams can attach and detach from the cable, (similar to the ones in san francisco)

    • @TheTouristLine
      @TheTouristLine  2 роки тому

      The trams are permanently attached to the cable, I have had my measuring tool out on Google Earth and all four sections are exactly 0.25 miles from start to passing loop. I checked the time stamps on the video and some sections do take longer than others, this can be because of more weight on one tram than the other, making tiny adjustments etc. Length wise, they are identical.
      I enjoyed looking in to that one!
