  • After a little look around Chester Station and the filming of Hollyoaks, we join a Northern service back to Manchester via the Cheshire Lines route via Northwich and Altrincham.
    Addendum
    The line diverging at Northwich passes through Middlewich, not Winsford.

    Thank you, I enjoyed this driver's eye view journey from Chester to Manchester Picc. The twin arches of the overbridge with the optical illusion of gothic style is a highlight for me. The commentary at the bottom of screen adds to the enjoyment of this journey.

    Excellent video, loved it.
    As an addition, as the train leaves Delamere Station. 19 minutes 43 sec., the immediate bridge at the end of the platform is the B5152, Cotebank (A49) to Frodsham Road, but just behind it is a large three pipe overbridge.
    It is the Vrnwy Aquaduct, normally underground carrying water from Lake Vrnwy in Wales, supplying water to Liverpool's Prescot reservoirs, but here it has to cross over the railway, as the railway was there first.

    Only just got around to watching this, but have really enjoyed it. I used to travel the route regularly in the 1960s and 70s so it brought back loads of happy memories of the beauty of this part of the country and the architecture of the structures such as bridges and stations. Thanks for sharing.

    Had to smile at the mention of Hollyoaks. My daughter's claim to fame was that, whilst she was a uni student in Chester, she was asked to be an extra in Hollyoaks for one scene.

    “They sleep in Hale and Sale by night, in Manchester by day! They travel home by CLC and MSJ&A” Converting the direct line from Altrincham to Oxford Road definitely makes the journey longer over this route. The last time I travelled over this route which was 40 years ago, The Chester Trains started from the now rarely used Bay Platform at Oxford Road. It seemed a very slow journey all those years ago but it always saved the track across Manchester from Piccadilly to Victoria.

      Hi Michael, yes, they are special train enthusiast badgers that like it there ;-) Just kidding of course. The badgers actually like it on the ballast as it stays warm at night and they don’t have to fight their way through the undergrowth but it doesn’t always end well unfortunately.

    Thanks for this, brilliant as always.
    As a child I remember the line from Altrincham ran to Oxford Road, so going straight on after Navigation Road via Sale (we lived in Ashton on Mersey), Stretford, Warwick Road, Old Trafford, Deansgate and Oxford Road The route from Altrincham to Oxford Road in the 1950's was, I believe, the only electrified railway in the North of England apart from a small piece between Morecambe and Heysham for some reason
    I was told the line had been electrified because of Metropolitan Vickers,where my father and grandfather both worked, possibly for an exhibition?. {In fact Metro Vicks was originally the Westinghouse plant where my grandfather started around the time when they bought and demolished the original Trafford House and Park.
    It looks as if the old electrification has gone. Do trains still run directly to Oxford Road or is that only the tram type system. And o you know when the old electrification?

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  3 роки тому

      I know the line you mean which is indeed Metrolink. I don’t know about the electrification other than it was used up to the end of heavy rail. I’ve got something coming soon that you will really enjoy. I can’t tell you more just now other than keep watching these videos ;-)

    I love these Drivers eye view vlogs, but the only thing that's spoils it for me are the plethora of adverts at the start all the way through and the end. NOTE TO UA-cam! you are spoiling it for everyone with your new add system!!! Keep them coming Don, they are great.

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  3 роки тому +2

      I know exactly where you are coming from David, they drive me nuts too. I can turn them off but any profit from these videos goes to charity. The trouble is that Google (who own UA-cam) have got rather greedy and they show them in left right and centre. Try and ignore them on the grounds that buy putting up with them you are donating to very needy charities. So far this year we’ve made just over £3000 for charity.

    Thank you for splicing in bits from other videos that cover, for instance, a junction, from a different angle - that's really appreciated.
    As are all of the extra bits of information you add these days. You have a good eye for interesting things. I have to say [whilst appreciating the workload!] that more of them wouldn't hurt, even things like the route numbers of the intersecting main roads, e.g. 'A56', 'B6089', or names of all the rivers [I know you do this sometimes]. These could appear without comment in one corner of the screen for a few seconds, and would be useful, especially for a viewer who has an especial interest in part of a line and may be watching with their own map, or planning an outing to look more closely at some feature.
    One exception: is it wise to point out badger setts, when badger-baiting gangs are reported to be as active as ever?
    Anyway, thanks very much for what you do. It's fantastic, and fascinating not only for the various interests of railway enthusiasts, but also for mechanical engineers, civil engineers, topographers and geographers in general, and industrial and local historians - to name but a few...'

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the feedback Rob, much appreciated. I sometimes add more information but then when I watch it back it looks too cluttered so end up removing them again. Regarding badger setts, yes I know what you mean but those cretins usually know where they are anyway. Thankfully, the railway itself offers that one some protection.

    Ha, not sure why this popped up in recommended vlogs but was interesting to watch. I'm from Chester, but have lived in Northwich for about 13 years now. I actually live in Greenbank, our house backs onto the railway(our washing can be seen on the right at about 33:08). I often wave to the drivers, usually the freight ones as they pass, being much slower we often get a wave back or a hoot of the horn.

      Hi Peter. All the temporary speed restrictions are published in a pamphlet that every driver MUST carry. If the reason for the speed restriction is removed because whatever it was has been fixed, they can’t remove the signs until it is removed from the publication so they put a line through it to tell the drivers not to reduce speed for it. It’s known as a SPATE board - speed previously advised, terminated early.

      Hi Bob. Some are listed and others are safe because they have become private dwellings. I always thing that station at Barrow for Tarvin would make a superb house. The train actually looks as if its going faster than it really is due to the very wide angle lens. The newer camera let me zoom in a little but they are still wide angle.

    Great video, are you (or anyone) aware of any planned upgrades for this route? Theres a massive increase in population around the Northwich/Knutsford area and it seems like there would be a good business case to improve journey times along this route for commuters to Manchester and Chester. Sadly there seems to have been a bit of a decline in use primarily down to unreliability and journey times recently!

You state in the video that the freight line branches off there to "Sandbach via Winsford". My mate says this should read "Sandbach via Middlewich" !! Just thought you might want to know. My mate occasionally drove over this route with diversionary expresses from Holyhead to Crewe, or sometimes coal trains from Trentham to Oakleigh.
    Cheers
    Derek

      Yes, we think it was an apple or something similar which you could say is harmless but we occasionally get a windscreen put through and a very shaken driver to deal with. A Class 185 definitely saved the life of one of my colleagues as they dropped a coping stone which hit the windscreen right in the middle one day. It completely destroyed the screen but it stayed in place and my mate lives to tell the tale.

      Possibly Dave. I don’t think they’ve got them all yet and I believe they have options on more new ones so as soon as there are enough available we might see them over there.

    Thanks once again Don for the video and additional information. If you acknowledge an advance speed warning signal, but are exceeding the limit at the warning sign, are the brakes applied as they would be at a red signal? Is it the same situation at a temporary speed restriction?

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  3 роки тому

      Its the same at a fixed speed restriction but not at a temporary one. Incidentally, each railway company must conduct routine speed monitoring. This is often done by downloading the on train data recorder but occasionally they go out with a radar identical to the ones the police use.

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  Рік тому +1

      I’ve just answered a comment on getting the definition right and this subject of perspective is my second bugbear. In my earliest attempts, I tried dashcams, camcorders and digital cameras. In the end, the only camera I could find that didn’t “hunt” for focus of shut down after several minutes was a GoPro. The first one was a Hero Black but it suffered the same very wide angle lens as the dashcam. Two subsequent models later and the perspective was awful and they would freeze or overheat for fun. Only on GoPro 8 and later have I got the ability to zoom in but it’s a digital zoom so while the perspective is better, the definition is off in low light. The bottom line is Tony, to get everything just right I’d need broadcast standard cameras and I can neither afford them or cart them around. I’m at work when I do this and I can’t delay a train to set up a large camera and my work bag weighs a ton already. Until an action camera comes with a decent lens I’m stuck with about 38mm focal length.

    19:55 To be fair, nothing works better than keeping the bloomin trees away from the railway to begin with!! You could argue they look nice, but I really don't think the risk to life and institutional cost of autumn leaf fall is worth it. You could argue for the ecological aspect, but the railways (especially nowadays...) take up an absolutely minuscule amount of the country, and would displace very few trees versus our society's favourite tarmac abominations, like motorways and car parks!

    I don't have any words for about those idiots on the bridge, I hope BTP is doing something because I bet it is a regular problem? The only other thing was I kept looking out in these videos to see the site of the old Mayfield Station, I think there is an excavator in the shot where it used to be, strange how until recently they had plans to reopen it, then all of sudden it is demolished to make way for HS redevelopment

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  Рік тому

      Those kids were not as bad as some. The real bad ones are the ones that drop coping stones or hurl bricks because those stand a chance of getting through the windscreen. Mayfield is in the video and it has been partially demolished. I think it is more to make it safe and reduce maintenance but they have made an outdoor venue for concerts etc and developed the land somewhat. The HS2 station will actually be built over on the opposite side of the station under current plans.

However, the big difference is, I don’t profit from the revenue I give it to charity so try to put up with them in the knowledge that somebody less fortunate will benefit. The channel has raised over £3000 so far and I’ll announce which charity will get it in April.

      No, not really, the interlocking is quite safe. However, there are many aspects in which we just have to trust the system. For example, we do 100mph in thick fog when we can barely see a thing.
