Breaking Cybertruck’s Armor Glass (So You Don’t Have To)

- We have the balls to do what @tesla wouldn't. Finally with our own triangle truck in hand, we tested the limits of Tesla's “Armor Glass” to see if the production version is any better than the prototype revealed almost 5 years ago. 🪩 💥 📐

Context: In 2019 Franz threw a ~2” steel ball bearing at Tesla’s prototype Cybertruck and we couldn’t get the production Cybertruck glass to break until our fourth throw of a 3” steel ball bearing. Because of science, that could easily be as much as 3.5x the force.

When the Nerd has a better arm than the Triathlete... Haha
I use both those terms complimentary, FTR...
Appreciate it. Time for me to start training so I can hold both titles.
TESLA used a 2" ICE ball gun, to BENCHMARK the Cybertruck glass.
I have a feeling the Athlete was just worried - he seems like a nice guy and breaking something intentionally didn't sit right with him
Watching that second guy throw was painful to watch. He threw everything from the elbow and never used his full arm and shoulder. it looked like he was pushing it more like a shot put than a throw. It seemed like he's never thrown a baseball. Maybe he was holding back because it wasn't his car, even though the test was to break it, but his throws just looked very awkward.
The glass was NEVER claimed to be bullet proof as far as I'm aware.
100% correct, @thekilowatts should issue an retraction
It's called clickbait and it worked.
Didn’t Elon say that it was at the cybertruck reveal?
No, Elon never said the glass was bulletproof. @@tobis.4037
You are absolutely correct. They were trying to create a sort of armored glass but it ended up being a super strength in the glass but not claimed to be bulletproof.
Glad to see someone threw an actual steel ball to test it out. Appreciate the video.
Next video recommendation: throw same balls to other trucks' window.
Still searching for volunteers
@@KLWTTS Baseball players(athletes) maybe? 🤔
@@darealbrianparkI think he means "truck" volunteers
watch "My buddy tries to break car window with hammer"
no need for su***de windows that rescue workers cant open, tempered glass works just as fine
@darealbrianpark
Curious to see different hangun ballistic results of all the cybertuck windows.
Ford : built tough 🤡
Cybertruck : Hold my beer🗿
They never claimed the windows were bullet proof, it was just called armoured glass, to withstand a lot more than the usual glass
5 lbs steel ball thrown by a triathlete (not holding back) just bounces off the window without breaking it 😳
narrator: it definitely broke it.
@@laloajuria4678 cracked it NOT broke
Hi, Elon voice double lol
And thats AFTER multiple different balls were thrown at it. If it was thrown to other windows it wouldnt crack it even after multiple throws.
@@laloajuria4678yeah after a hailstorm of metal balls it the window it finally cracked.
They do not claim the glass is bulletproof, why so misleading title?
Clicks
The original claim was that it would be bulletproof. This is what the masses remember and the reason why they'd click the title. Tesla of course walked back from "bulletproof" at the delivery event so the label is no longer accurate.
I was there at the event, they demonstrated how the glass could withstand a steel ball drop, but never claimed the glass was bulletproof. They may have construed it tho by saying the truck was bulletproof.
@@SCWgreg it was said at the first reveal
@@thesadboxman It was never said, people just saw armor glass and assumed. The presentation stated only the stainless steel was bulletproof to 9mm rounds.
Never said the glass was bullet proof. It was gorilla glass which is not bullet proof
Cool stuff!
A comparison to a normal car/truck door glass would have been useful.
You’re right it would have been nice to have comparisons, I’ve seen small sledge hammers try and break regular automotive glass that bounced right off
some kid broke my car window couple years ago with a golf ball
It's Tesla tough. It's a whole another level.
They never said bulletproof glass.
I was skeptical it could handle it since they didnt test it at the delivery event, but damn this is awesome
They refrained from throwing steel ball at it cause they didnt want to ruin it since it was to be handed over to their customer.
This is actually insane. Tesla rocks! I’d change the title though, they never said the glass would be bulletproof, only the doors.
Edit: glad to see the title change, thanks!
Yup clickbait title and BS Strawman premise. I will refrain from subscribing.
How much was the glass replacement?
He posted invoice on X: 330 USD including labor.
$350.83
@@KLWTTS right, including tax
Every time you throw a hard object, or subject the glass to a blow, you begin to introduce micro fractures, slowly weakening the glass. So with each larger object thrown, you begin to compromise it, making it easier for the next one to crack it. This is how at launch-night the glass finally failed, they threw at it some 40 times earlier in the day, before it caved on stage.
You’re going to get a lot of comments (deservedly) correcting you - they never said the *glass* was bulletproof - just the stainless steel body.
They never claimed there windows were bullet proof
previous tosses might have weaken it so the last straw broke the camel's back
Cope
Exactly! Cope. The excuse Musk originally gave was ironically devoid of physics.
Due to the solid design of the Cybertruck, the windows should actually be easier to break.
They must have added padding to the doors in this latest Cybertruck, so the windows only break if struck on the edges near the steel where the window has less flexibility.
Now try it on the competition
Now let's see how you get out in an emergency like a fire and you are knocked unconscious and the doors fail to open and rescuers cannot break the glass to get you out!
Are you a worry-wart in real life too? Electric cars catch on fire 1/30th as often as gas cars per registered vehicle. @@gregb1599
@gregb1599
The doors probably have a mechanical release. Firemen carry fireaxes and have crowbars, it won't be too difficult to break into it in the emergency, besides it's up to the car buyers to decide if they prefer fragile windows just in case car should catch on fire and they need to break them, not some committee or government oversight mandating this erroneous nonsense.
Also, if it's good enough for the pope and others who pay thousands for bullet proof car windows, then that alone should tell you that you, that should hold your breath until your wish is fulfilled. 🙂
The window is not bulletproof
They never said even a single time that the glass was bulletproof.
Yeah, irresponsible to be spreading that.
5 years later Franz and Elon were telling the truth. They had hit that same glasswindow several times and it held. Just like today. But with all those hits the glass got fragile until it broke. Great clip
That was freaking impressive !! Considering usually when you hit something over and over it's not like hitting it once , your hitting glass that has been hit over and over and still withstands a 5 lb steel ball. 🤯🤯 No words
Well done as always
Wow. I thought the Q ball was going to shatter the window and was shocked when the 3" ball bearing didn't do it the first time, second time or even the third time. Thx for the vid.
You and me both!
Top notch video Ryan and team!
except for the lie about "bullet proof claim by tesla" in the first minute of the video.
Great video Ryan!
That's so impressive!
Thank you for your service and sacrifice 🙏
Can you have this test done side by side with a F150. That give people a real idea the strength vs standard glass.
Now, do the same test, with the same balls in others pick-ups, like Rivian, F 150 lightineen etc, Let's see if they support this test too. 😂😂😂
Thank you it's amazing 🎉
So i live in the Bay, and where can i get this glass for my model Y? Bippers will be so bummed!
DUDE, THAT IS CRAZY!! I sure would not have the balls to repeat the test when I get mine ;)
Odd, you should be able to; they're all available on amazon with 2 day shipping.
Wow that is impressive!
I can see the movies plots coming out - putting like James Bond in a cyber truck and dropping it in water - and he can't open the windows, can't open the doors and the windows won't break. James be stuffed ! 🤣🤣
They put him in the water in an Esprit Turbo, the design forebear for the CT.
This is an insane video
Nice test
WOW! Kudos to Tesla, this is really amazing! Great video.
Very cool! Can a firefighter still use a diamond punch to shatter it all after an accident?
Crazy!
Great video Ryan! Would be good to see the full thing on X, I wrongly assumed the first ball you did smashed it!
Uploaded to X as well just now!
Well I did not expect that
This is exactly what happened in 2019, huh? They did a few practice throws backstage before the event that likely weakened the glass and then it broke on stage.
Ballsy, I like it!
I was nervous the whole time
This is so insane, this will protect so many people from road rage and psycho trying to break into your car
Wow. That Ironman is an absolute beast!
Most people don't realize that in the US side windows are now laminated glass, they will crack but not shatter.
MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT IT IS NOT NECESSARILY GORILLA GLASS. It is not traditional glass as we know it. It is a composite referred to as Transparent Aluminum. Developed in the 80s and it was what was referred to in the movie Star Trek The Voyage Home? when they picked up a Whale from earth which was when Scottie referred to it as Transparent Aluminum. It is now called ALON by the company that bought the rights to it around 2000 which stands for its composition of Aluminum (AL) which is 20 percent of the ingredients, Oxygen (O), and Nitrogen (N) In order to make it transparent after manufacturing it has to be polished extremely well to the point it is microscopically smooth which makes it hydrophobic. (Ie better than using rain x and is permanent in the material) It is 5x harder than glass more like Sapphire. A bulletproof window might have to be 3in thick wheras this could be 1.5 in thick to achieve the same results.
Probably no car ever has had so much service demand from intentional damage to glass and bullets to doors 🤣
The owner of that truck, got a good deal.
Seems perfect for when your in an accident on fire and no one can save you!
Seems that they really were hitting it backstage before the show!
Easy upvote
damn this is pretty wild lol
They need to give you a breaking hammer to get out. He had to dodge the ball coming back at him!!
Honestly, the glass is very impressive
Tesla NEVER claimed the glass was bulletproof, simply tougher than normal autoglass.
Impressive
Wow!!!!
Tip of the HAT awsome job! Make sure more "fun test panels" happen like a fender or door that can be easily replaced. You have balls big enough to do it and it will keep others from testing on "random" parked trucks.
Most of the windows break like normal... watched bullets go straight through.
How much is that going to cost to fix?
$350 and it's done!
Wait until one of these trucks are in a serious accident and the emergency crew can't get you out.
EVERY Tesla made has MANUAL door Release .
in the LATEST crash test, the Cybertruck in FRONT impact, the Doors still opened.
I think it should come with broken glass from the factory, looks cool lol.
Franz signing it would be SIIIICK
Fingers crossed!
I have been wondering if the glass doesn't crack with the safety tool, how hard will it be to get out during an emergency?
Easy, just open one of the doors! They all have mechanical releases incase the wiring is severed. It is extremely rare for someone to save their life by having to break a window (but the irrational fear of that sure does sell a lot of window breaking tools). And that's with regular trucks that have doors made of thin, painted steel that crumple in the slightest impact. The tesla doors are built like a Sherman tank. If one or two do jamb, it's easy enough to slide across the seat and exit the undamaged side.
@@ZipZoomZip Thanks. I'm aware of those things. The scenario I was thinking about was one where the car was driven into water. In those situations, it's almost impossible to open the door due to the water pressure. Rolling down the window and escaping is the #1 solution. However if windows don't work due to electrical short issues, then breaking the glass and exiting through the window is the #2 solution. But I would agree that this is extremely rare.
Unbelivable!!!
Didn’t original break due to repetitive trauma from micro fractures? So it might not have broken if you tried a window that wasn’t hit before?
Can you try the same balls with a normal truck window? would be nice to compare :)
Now I wonder if the door pusher actuates when you press the inside door button to open it, or does it assume that a human will push it? Because under water pressure that pusher may have more power.
MANUAL door release inside .
This is the realest test! Thank you. I am so tired of Elon-fan-boy youtubers trying to avoid the window test.
They don’t claim the glass is bulletproof lol
NO NO NO...THEY NEVER claimed the windows were bullet proof...why do you say that?
Could you try it on the windshield please
What was the quote?
What was the speed of the throwing per km an hour which caused the cracks? If someone sends a ball with 120 miles an hour, would it crash? SC High5
Wrong wording not bullet proof
Better wording is shatter proof for the glass 😎
Cool!!
They have never claimed the glass was bullet proof. They claimed the body was to 9mm bullets. The glass was just described as armour glass and super tough. But they never claimed the glass of the truck was bullet proof. I think you need to watch the event again.
Tesla NEVER claimed it was bullet proof…..come on man, you did all this great work to make this video, don’t piss everyone off by screwing the facts
Would be nice to see a 0.22 cal vs the glas!
You’re the fucking best bro lol 😂
On newer cars most are laminated which you are now definitely aware of and because of this glass breakers won't work because laminated glass doesn't shatter
Props for smashing your own window for this test. How much does the replacement window cost?
$330
For non gangsters the more practical thing is if he front window can take stone chips from the road on a highway which is they main reason for replacing a window i guess. And making it harder for thives to break in.
Wow
The media will clip the last throw and show how the CT is not bulletproof 🙄
This glass needs to be on all tesla windshields and roof glass..
Not bad at all
Now do the same with an F150…. Just make sure a dealership has 5+ spare windows 😅
Tesla never said the glass was "Bulletproof".
Triathlete throwing with his left hand
rent a pitching machine (or borrow mine) and fire a 2" ice ball at the window at 70MPH. It's supposed to take it. That'll impress me.
I’m down.
Bullet proof glass is generally about 1.5 inches thick.
try the Glass on UPARMORED mtav.
Well, this is exactly why Tesla doesn’t spend much on their own marketing.
Hey, that’s the San Francisco service center!
waits years for a vehicle just to throw rocks at it for views lol. love it
Now do the back one lol
They never said the GLASS was bulletproof. They said that about the stainless steel body (and only to 9mm/smaller handgun calibers). I'm surprised someone who literally went to the events and HAS a Cybertruck would get this wrong.
(If someone thinks I'm wrong, I'm all ears)
Dude you look like a clone of Chris Pine! 😂
clone of Gene Simmons (sweeting to oldies).
