Important tip you need to save the image before you are going edit externally otherwise it returns an error (file path not found) atleast in mine
    Blender 3
Also in Gimp you need to click over right in file tab before you reload in blender after that (IN blender : Image editor or UV editor - Image click replace)
was beating my brain for 3 and half hours trying to figure it
hope it helps anyone who reads it

Thats amazing didnt know that 🤓 otherwise you can create Layers through the Material node where you have extremely high control. attach Image to MixRGB add or mix them you can repeat this to add more Layers. And the pen tool in texture paint got a line Tool, stamp tool, pattern tool, masking and much more included. And through the Mat node generate base Texture AO, Curve and much more and bake them as base tex. Its Extremely beginner unfriendly but extremely worth investing time in it 👍🏼

Been using this method for ages, though not by "connecting" Blender to the image software. Since Blender is so awesome to even read PSD files, I'll just do my texturing work in Photoshop, save the file and refresh in Blender. Basically the same way. Once the texture is finished, I save it as PNG or JPG and switch the texture within Blender from the PSD to this final image.
PSD is really not a good format for space efficient results, so it should never be the final image format. If you compress PSD in ZIP or RAR, heavily depending on the file's content, it can get a LOT smaller. Sometimes 98% smaller.

People just get 3D Coat, use the right tools that help you, While using gimp or krita is just a bandage, when in fact you have to learn how to paint in 3d so using a software that lets you paint freely like 3D coat is the way to actually improve in this field, else you will only paint in 2D and you're textures will look flat.

Yeah 3d coat is a great program! Substance painter I like as well, amazing functionality!

Or can you just put the image into the program, I just put the texture into the porgram by dragging it in and saving, it works all the same.

You need to bake the normals of your high-poly, subdivided mesh to your low-poly, retopologized mesh. I go over it in this video (ua-cam.com/video/kgv3xDQtYC4/v-deo.html) but there are lots of better videos out there on this topic, just search "blender baking normals" or something like that.
