HOW DO YOU ALWAYS MAKE TUTORIALS RIGHT WHEN I NEED THEM??
Haha lol I'm right behind you
Exactly!!

Blender really should add these simple tools for texture painting. Layers and ability to add images and stuff. I’m glad there are free editing softwares at least
Yeah it's true, layers would be amazing. Once I tried Substance and tasted it's sweet juice it was over!
There’s a plugin called Tx Layer that adds in layering functionality.
Crimson-fox Twitch oh that's awesome!
In Blender, you can stamp or brush on image files. It only works in the 3D texture painting viewport though.
Yeah good point, that's a really powerful tool in Blender as well!
Found this while on the verge of tears trying to work out how to not make my textures look like shit for a school project. Thank you so much
Haha yeah no worries, good luck on the project!
Verge of tears is so real
Important tip you need to save the image before you are going edit externally otherwise it returns an error (file path not found) atleast in mine
Blender 3
Also in Gimp you need to click over right in file tab before you reload in blender after that (IN blender : Image editor or UV editor - Image click replace)
was beating my brain for 3 and half hours trying to figure it
hope it helps anyone who reads it
Ah interesting, thanks ghostwarrior!
on the gimp app there is a option to replace the file old file with the new one, its kind of a faster way to do it.
Nice thanks kuriiz!
you just saved me a rage fuel headache trying to figure that one out, thank you!!
Oh I’m about to do this now
Haha yeah it's pretty handy!
THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE BEST TUTORIALS EVER FOR ME BECAUSE I NEEDED IT THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Haha yeah no worries riz! Glad it helped!
this is amazing....
Haha thanks again Bin! You're too nice! But yeah it's a nice way to integrate better texturing tools with Blender for free!
@@RussellMidfield It's especially nice for me since my whole journey of art and creativity in the free and open source community began with Krita. I'm all sentimental.
That's awesome! Yeah Krita is such a great program, the painting feels so nice in it, I use it all the time!
Thats amazing didnt know that 🤓 otherwise you can create Layers through the Material node where you have extremely high control. attach Image to MixRGB add or mix them you can repeat this to add more Layers. And the pen tool in texture paint got a line Tool, stamp tool, pattern tool, masking and much more included. And through the Mat node generate base Texture AO, Curve and much more and bake them as base tex. Its Extremely beginner unfriendly but extremely worth investing time in it 👍🏼
Yeah it's a neat trick! Oh yeah, that's another way, thanks!
Except texture painting in blender is lagging with me
Yeah it can be slow sometimes
THANK YOU OH MY GOD
Haha you're welcome Sean! Glad it helped!
such a hidden treasure here!!
Haha yeah it really let's you tap into some serious power!
@@RussellMidfield for sure and not onyle me :D my wife is also watching ur great series now haha :D
Haha that's great! This is a great hobby to share!
really helpful! thanks
You're welcome!
I'll shape the earth and sea! (When I get to that, I just started to retopologize my first model)
Haha you will! Best of luck on your journey!
omg thank you!!
Yeah no worries Maggie! I'm glad it helped!
Do really awesome tutorials man.
Thanks Jenova! Appreciate it!

Dang... Just found your channel through this mini tutorial popping up... Now in binge mode on your content. Extremely useful little vid... Thanking ye kindly.
Thanks Neil! Yeah no worries, I hope some of it helps!
@@RussellMidfield It absolutely does.
I have only just starting my (long overdue) 3D journey, and have found all the usual channels, which are great... but... to be honest, yours is by far one of the better ones I have come across.
Really good stuff, the content is very much appreciated.
Thanks man, that means a lot. I know I severely lack as an artist, we all have eyes haha, but I try to make up for it by going slow and pointing things out on the screen. I'm glad to hear that they are helping, however small, it really makes putting these together worth it.
@@RussellMidfieldI don't think you lack as an artist at all, but as creatives I think we all feel like that... I know I do, and I've had a 25 year career doing what I do.
so... I'm not sure where it is you lack so serverly as an artist. But if that is the case, heres hoping I also lack as serverly as you in my 3d work when I get there... :D
Haha thanks Neil, to severely lacking as artists! 😅🍻
Thanks for the knowledge bomb 🧠💥
Haha yeah no worries! Glad it helped!
yes, that helped
Nice! I'm happy it did!
amazing
Thanks Jackal! I'm glad if it helps!
GODSEND
Haha nice glad it helped honeydew!
You consistently address the exact problems we are all having. Legend! Thank you again!
Haha yeah this one was definitely a neat little menu item to stumble across! I used to always just ham fist it by opening in GIMP manually and then saving and reopening the image each time I made a change and that just started becoming so painful I figured there's gotta be a better way and the Blender dev team was there with an extended hand haha!
How to improve Texture Painting in Blender...exports to Substance. But in all seriousness, great tip.
Haha yeah Substance is awesome, thanks man appreciate it!
WHAT? Wow! I did not know you could do that. Thank you!
Haha I know right?! Next stop, Pixar Studios!
This kind of blew my mind
Haha yeah it's a great little shortcut
Just add in the auto reload add on for a perfect combination
Oh yeah good idea, that would be a great combo!
BRO IS THERE ANYWAY i could talk to you about my animated short film this stuff is no joke man lol
Haha yeah man for sure!

This is really helpful! Thank you!
You're welcome anandpg! Glad it helped!
Wow, tutorial in less than a minute! Thanks a lot for this. Which one do you recommend between Gimp and Krita?
Haha yeah no worries! Quick and to the point! I personally like GIMP, it's been great for me with respect to graphic design, photo editing, gif creation, as well as for painting. I feel like it serves well in each of those areas for me!
Thissss Comment right F*&@^# HERE!!! Thank you, Ghostwarrior, you absolute SAINT.
Haha lol the real tutorial is always in the comments
Why does blender not have more painting features? Why did you have to reload the image manually? Shouldn't blender just watch the image files for changes and reload automatically or prompt you.
Oh gosh I'm not sure, probably funnels down to time and money as most things do! Yeah that would be nice, maybe it does that but I'm not sure how to have it happen automatically.
Excellent, it's nice that you didn't mention photoshop. There are beginners who dont know about these free alternatives.
Btw, verse of the week: They said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (Acts 16:31)
Exactly! There are great free software choices out there for art and image editing that do 90%, if not more, of what Photoshop does, no need to fork out the big bucks every month to have fun creating! Beautiful, thanks for sharing!
Oh wow I didn’t actually know you could make this process simpler. This will save me a lot of time. Thanks mate! Very great tip!
Yeah its a neat little trick to make the texture painting experience in Blender a little more robust! You can get a lot done with just the simple brushes in Blender obviously, but this way you can make it even better when putting on the final touches!
@@RussellMidfield agreed! I mainly do character creation so I can just use the texture brush I created with different program, and it works very well. But I must admit layering in blender is quite painfully tedious 😅 I often find myself using addon to create more complicated texture .
But in this way, I can make things even simpler aha 😱
It's true, the layering is perhaps the best thing about it for me, its nice to isolate on separate layers. Oh what addons do you use for texturing?
@@RussellMidfield yeas definitely! I hope blender will implement layering features someday😅
And the addon I use is called the Mask tool addon. It’s unfortunately paid one so it might not work well on your channel but it can turn blender into practically substance painter, and make your texturing process so enjoyable and easy!
The developer called Wayward art company has released some demonstration videos of it on UA-cam so I can highly recommend checking those out!!
Oh yes! I have watched his demonstration videos on how that addon works, it looks awesome, great value, basically Substance Painter for $35!
Any good reason not to use armor paint or substance painter instead?
Nono, both are great programs! Use what works best for your workflow.
It's been what, couple of days or so & I can't seem to find a video that could help me solve my problem.
Why can't I save shorts for later!? It's infuriating.
Yeah damn that's annoying it's true!
Awesome .. Thanks for this info :)
You're welcome Tutter! I'm glad it helped!
Dies it bug anyone else that he called Decals "deckles"?
Haha sorry about that!
That's a lot of work to make a "click open button" skipper. You should do a video about exporting uv layouts to GIMP.
Haha yeah you're right haha! Oh good idea, I'll add that to my to-do list!
Can we paint with the same technique in Photoshop.
Yup!
Any kind of image editor works right?
It should yeah!
Just here to say "Hi all!"😝
Haha! Hi Debby!
This can also work with Photoshop???
Yes I believe so! Give it a try and let me know!
bro broke his arms
Haha 😅
it works with photoshop too but I know that the best bet for us is the free programs.
Yeah for sure, I'm an unwashed peasant so I live for the free stuff
Use substance painter instead
Yeah for sure, thanks!
well done Russell 👍
Thanks Sultan!
Love your tutorial Russell, learn a lot thank you :)
Thanks Xuan! Thanks for always watching haha!
Thanks for sharing that information I'm going to use that in the future of March when my new gaming computer gets here
Yeah no worries! Oh that's awesome! What specs do you have planned out?!?!
@@RussellMidfield what do you mean by specs? I'm a little slow on understanding
@@RussellMidfield if you're asked me what my plans on getting a gaming computer and the answer is I don't know for sure I just know I'm getting it around this coming March I don't know if it's going to be already built or I have to go with my father to buy it Best Buy or he'll just surprised me with it either way that's probably the answer you'll get
I'm more of a furry artist now I've been drawing and digital drawing all my life 2D animation I want to make a mini story I think I want to try 3D modeling me that is because all the other computers I used to have my first desktop was Gate and I have 3 laptops I really learn the hard way when the the old computers I used to use crash everytime I try to do 3D modeling or something slowed down that's why I need a stronger powerful computer like the one my father promised to get me this month coming
Oh sorry! By "specs" I meant specifications, or what will the components of the computer be, such as the CPU processor, motherboard, or GPU graphics card. I'm a little bit of a nerd and like those things haha
Sorry but I disagree with the fact that You can't paint in layers, You can and it's easy,
and you can also add Stickers and decals easily too,
As per brush, blender also supports custom Brushes and works the same as any other Raster software.
If you don't believe me then you can look at my PickUp truck 3D model made 99.99% in Blender.
I used photoshop just to create a decal pack
Nice man! Yeah Blender is pretty powerful its true, I'm definitely wrong here my bad!
It helps too much
Haha I'm glad to hear!
Do you reply to every comment? Anyway, This helped me a lot with the textures, not master it, but definitely helped!
I do haha! Nice yeah, it's nice to tap into the power of other programs to take your models to the next level!
You Can Change Your Channel Name to "Hope, that Helped" lol
Haha it's true 😅
You always know what we want.. 😅😅😅
Haha lol I'm like the three eyed raven of Blender
@@RussellMidfield 🤣🤣🤣🤣👌
Hey, three eyed raven, I want your help just now.. 😅😅😅
Haha caw caw, what's up man haha
Free editing software like Gimp or Krita?
No, thanks, I use cracked Substance Painter 💀👍
Haha yeah another way for sure!
This isn't improving the texturing painter, it's subverting the problem completely and using an old method, which doesn't allow you to paint in 3D like you probably would for most scenarios.
The problems are true, plus that Texturing Painter lags like crazy even if you hide the 2D viewer. But this is clickbait.
Awesome thanks!
Hello what will be the path for Linux users?
Can you just open a terminal up and type "gimp"? Or /usr/bin/gimp might work
@@RussellMidfield Thank you so much!
Yeah no worries!
I just lost a manually painted texture I worked on for 2 hours. I accidentally pressed something and it got deleted. I am on the verge of tears.
Oh no! Because of the tip in the video?!?!?! I'm so sorry! Usually Krita has autosave so you might be able to find it. Blender has autosave as well, in the Temp folder, but the crappy thing about Blender is that yeah sometimes you can lose texture files if not saved, it's happened to me as well it sucks I feel your pain!
Brilliant
Thanks man!
Cool
Sweet
Been using this method for ages, though not by "connecting" Blender to the image software. Since Blender is so awesome to even read PSD files, I'll just do my texturing work in Photoshop, save the file and refresh in Blender. Basically the same way. Once the texture is finished, I save it as PNG or JPG and switch the texture within Blender from the PSD to this final image.
PSD is really not a good format for space efficient results, so it should never be the final image format. If you compress PSD in ZIP or RAR, heavily depending on the file's content, it can get a LOT smaller. Sometimes 98% smaller.
Yeah got to be efficient with our resources and space, good point, thanks!
I would hav eliked to seen this tutorial 1 day earlier cuz now i'm mid way my textures.
Haha darn well maybe you can try on the next model!
Does this only worked for krita and gimp only? how about CSP and PS?
Should work with those too!
Nice
69
Unfortunately doesnt work with the Steam version of Krita.
Oh darn that sucks!
Maybe a dwarf kingdom with a crystal castle?
It's true!
By any chance, is Photoshop possible?? Or are those two programs the only ones available for now~? 🐹❤️
I think it should yeah, give it a try!
I haven't test this with Photoshop, but if Photoshop is not working I can share a quick addon I made myself to do the same thing but with Photoshop.
Oh that's awesome, yeah for whatever reason if it doesn't work with Photoshop, that would be really helpful, let me know, thanks!
Blender for modeling, Substance Painter for texturing.
Yeah for sure!
Excellent, I was tabbing between Krita and Blender before but this should be less cumbersome.
It's true, hopefully it streamlines things a little bit!
People just get 3D Coat, use the right tools that help you, While using gimp or krita is just a bandage, when in fact you have to learn how to paint in 3d so using a software that lets you paint freely like 3D coat is the way to actually improve in this field, else you will only paint in 2D and you're textures will look flat.
Yeah 3d coat is a great program! Substance painter I like as well, amazing functionality!
Or can you just put the image into the program, I just put the texture into the porgram by dragging it in and saving, it works all the same.
Oh nice! Way better, thanks Bread Witch!
Can you update this for Blender 4. I can't get it to work for Photoshop
Yeah for sure!
I need some help I know I'm dumb but I couldn't get this to work with Krita for some reason so if anyone has a alternative video or something that would be awesome. Thank you
Oh weird, maybe something had changed since I made this video.
Is this work with clip studio?? I can’t find Clip studio.exe in Blender file View
It should yeah!
just use substance painter instead of this crappy editor from blender
Yeah for sure good point!
that's awesome! but once you saved the image, all the layers in gimp still can be editable?
Haha thanks! Glad it helped! Yeah they can, just keep a separate file that's not flattened
thanks to solve my biggest problem
No worries man! I'm glad it helped!
how would i do this on like a google site for example? I only really know how to use "pixlr" but im not sure how to export it on there
Oh gosh I'm not sure sorry, I'm not good at web development!

@@RussellMidfield then tell me how to smooth the retopology for *animation like subdivision surface without applying it because if we apply then the faces will increase and if we not apply then it will cause lag during animations.
I'm stucked and confused in that.
Please help me.
You need to bake the normals of your high-poly, subdivided mesh to your low-poly, retopologized mesh. I go over it in this video (ua-cam.com/video/kgv3xDQtYC4/v-deo.html) but there are lots of better videos out there on this topic, just search "blender baking normals" or something like that.
