Peter Kreeft personally assisted my husband and me in converting to the Catholic Church in 1985. I took one of his philosophy classes at Boston College prior to that. I treasure the time we spent in his company and own and have read many of his books. In fact I just put one down just before tuning into this podcast. He's in my prayers.

I am a former Protestant, and I’d say the reason why they tend to know so much more scripture is because it’s “all they have.” They don’t have the Liturgy, the history of the Church, novenas, the Rosary, the Blessed Mother, chaplet of Divine Mercy, sacraments, sacramentals, the Saints, holy days, adoration, meditation etc. studying scripture is super important, but it is not all. As scripture says, THE CHURCH is the foundation of our faith, not scripture; the early Church didn’t have scripture as we know it today, but since modern Protestantism rejects all those things, they focus on scripture memorizing, but I’d say that if you don’t have those above mentioned things, you never truly understand scripture. You need the Church.

I really wish ppl would stop saying protestant when what they mean is a particular stripe of protestantism, and oftentimes a very American evangelical protestantism.
Formal liturgy, the following of the liturgical calendar with all the changes in vestments, altar cloths etc that accompany it, sacraments from 2 to all 7, Tradition, Creeds, saints, church history etc can all be found to varying degrees within protestantism. (Yes, even Adoration and Benediction.)
Tradition is actually one of the pillars of Anglicanism, 'Scripture, Tradition and Reason.'
Alongside sacred scripture they have the creeds, fhe writings of the Church Fathers, the 39 articles, BCP...it's bizarre to say that protestants "only" have scripture.
Some Presbyterians use the anaphoria of Hypolitus eucharistic prayer in their liturgy which is older than the one currently used in the Roman rite in the Catholic Church.
Protestants belief that scripture is the only source that can be relied upon to be inerrant and that it has everything that is sufficient to be saved does not mean it is the only source that can be drawn from.
The idea you put forward is the equivalent of Protestants saying "Catholics bow down to statues," or other tired and ignorant misconceptions. It does perhaps reflect the particular kind of protestant background you came from though. Were you from a non denominational evangelical type of church with a "worship team" and communion once a month with grape juice kind of church?

Dr. Kreeft must be one of the most tough and enduring Catholic apologists in the history of Holy Mother Church. A post script. I can't imagine disagreeing with Prof. Kreeft but I've come to observe and believe that Americans have developed an unhealthy obsession with dogs. I am a strong admirer of service dogs and the men and women who train them -- I've watched them do so. And there is a special relationship between the dog and the person it serves. But I sometimes wonder if there is an inverse relationship between the growing number of dogs -- often more than one or two per household -- and the declining number of babies. I see dogs sitting on the laps of drivers and dogs in baby carriages. There's a connection with the nationwide success of these pet stores -chains of them. If I come off as "Old Man Potter," so be it. After all we do now live in Potterville, don't we? And I wonder if "sentimental hogwash" is one influence.

Dogs and children are not mutually exclusive. I have both. What you are seeing is that people who reject having children still have the innate desire to have someone ti care for. They replace the children with dogs, but the rejection of children comes first, not the other way around.

    • @grahamcombs4752
      @grahamcombs4752 Місяць тому +1

@@danacasey8266 I don't disagree, but I've know people simply too old to be bringing in replacement dogs for two or more when one is all they can handle at their level of physicality. And abused dogs should be off limits and yet the pounds sell them off. And driving in today's current reckless and negligent driving it is irresponsible to have them sitting on your lap. I appreciate the old and often with a deceased husband or wife -- dogs are good companions and I've seen that as well. "Dog carriages? When did that begin? But people spending thousands of dollars on pets that would normally died natural deaths is highly questionable. At at my it is simple weird to see so many dogs and so much spent. When I was a boy and man people had the family dog. THAT was normal and the dog came after the family. And there wasn't the need for laws and licenses from the ALMIGHTY STATE. BTW There remain hundreds of thousands of unadopted children. I privilege people and the human space before animals of any kind or place.

As a millennial, I do see many of my childless peers attempting to fill the void of children with pets. Calling them ‘fur babies’. A family member my own age (37) calls his dog his ‘daughter’. Yeah no. I have both children and a dog, and gosh we love our dog, and loved our cat, but we do not feel the same way about pets that we do about children. People are filling the child-shaped void with pets just as they fill the God-shaped void with work, greed, identity politics, made-up mental health issues, social media likes, p*rn, and so much more.

Maybe it shouldn't be something you mention to people you don't know well, but if you know someone is working toward Heaven and desires to be with God, isn't it a little like asking a pregnant woman if she's ready to have that baby? I've been wondering about this since I had my first baby and experienced the awful awful awful pain and then the joy and relief of having done it. I think there's a lot of similarities between death and childbirth, and I'm leaning towards the thought that we could discuss death with a lot more anticipation.

I love these conversations because every time I hear it, I realize again that no doubt is original and that faith is a gift to be received every day.
What a waste of a husband would say after years of marriage, "Can I really know that my wife loves loves me? Sure she married me, bore my children, listens to my ideas, does my laundry, prepares my dinner every night, tells me she loves me, kisses me good morning/night every day, but can I really know?" Ugh, what a waste of time and energy.
And if a mountain would move because we have faith enough to tell it to, why can't the same cat we had on earth be in heaven with us?
If we have doubt, it's because we choose to, I'm certain of it. 😊.

Look up mortimer Adler's syntopicon and u can find great books written by Catholics.
I've read very little by them, but I know these books have helped others.
Try someone like John of the cross.
      -----
Saints are best people to learn the faith from.
Go to local pregnancy resource center and u should find solid catholics.

I love Peter Kreeft (and Matt Fradd) to bits and I loved this episode so much. I just wish it was longer! But I do want to point out one thing, about the LotR movies, Prof. Kreeft is just objectively wrong. Peter Jackson never said they didn't film the scouring of the Shire for money reasons, in fact, they even put glimpses of it in the Mirror of Galadriel sequence as a homage. He explicitly stated in the Extended Edition director's commentary that it would have been impossible and way too exhausting for the audience to start up another storyline after the destruction of the Ring and I completely agree. It would have been insanity to film it exactly as it is in the book. As much as I love Matt's guests in general, I notice that most of them are very much "book people" who don't seem to really grasp the medium of cinema. I mean, A Man for All Seasons is a fine film but it's really more of a play. The Lord of the Rings films are masterpieces of cinematography and I have the impression that most of these intellectual types just don't appreciate that aspect: the grandiose filming style, the incredible music, the groundbreaking visual design, etcetera.

My favorite part of episodes is hearing Thursday laugh off-mic in the background. It's somehow really important for the atmosphere. Adds warmth. ❤
I used to listen to Howard Stern and what I enjoyed most was the authenticity of the banter in the studio.

Great thought. Reminds me of John Paul II quote (homily in Koln in 1980) "You can't just live on trial, you can't just die on trial. You can't just love on a trial basis, you can't only accept a person on a trial basis and for a while." (I'm not sure if there's an official English translation)

I find it incredible the discussion about Islam when Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers just spoke on the radio on this subject today! Muslims do in fact own us in the fasting department but I will continue to pray they will come to know the one true Christ

Ted Dekker is delightfully weird and makes me think… but I bet much of his stuff borders on too abstract. This one is one of the least weird of his books.
