    I think the point that Mad Dog is making is that the physicality of the 80s was a way of life for those players. You won’t get that from watching a clip. An 80’s player understands what the defender can do to interfere with his shot, the same way a modern player know what a defender in today’s game CANNOT do. The fouls called HUGELY affects the spacing on the floor. With the kind of space players today have, it’s less of a risk to shoot from range, that’s what Steph has exposed. In the 80’s you’d get defended, miss the shot, and then be ridiculed for taking a difficult shot and not passing to someone in the post.

    • @bzso9603
      @bzso9603 Рік тому +6

      @@jamesmclean5204 Athletes today benefit greatly from advanced systems and rules that protect them. The spacing on the floor helps them look faster, but at that level, all of the generations would have the top tier athletes of their respective times. The difference is the way the game is played. Durant would get locked up in the 90’s, and that gets proven when he goes up against physical defenders like Tatum. LeBron’s size would keep him battling the bigger guys in the paint because he does not have the finesse of Magic or Jordan. Teams can switch up because nobody really defends in todays NBA. Plus with the prominence of the 3 ball, the game has become way more one dimensional.

    Bird was a beast. A scenario always forgotten is one of sports greatest tragedies happening during Birds final years - we never got a chance to see him play along side Len Bias. If Bias didn’t die on his draft night and suited up for the Celtics, there is no telling how long that dynasty would have lasted.
    Certainly Bird could have extended his career and changed his game to be a “high volume” 3 ball shooter that JJ mentioned. But he never had that luxury and spent much of his final years dealing with the Bad Boys in the paint.

    • @skillethead15
      @skillethead15 Рік тому +2

      If Bird played today he would be one of the best if not the best 3 point shooter in the NBA. I love how we want to separate eras when it comes to comparing stats and defense but somehow era doesn't matter when it comes to shooting. JJ is silly, Bird is absolutely a top 5 shooter even though he doesn't have top 5 attempts and makes.

      Yes, you're completely right. Mad Dog didn't articulate it very well, but the very fact that Larry wasn't a volume 3-point shooter and then could hit crucial 3s when required actually says more about his 3 point shooting than if you'd fired up 10 already in the game. And JJ's comment insinuating that his era was more physical than the 80s/90s is so utterly ridiculous - JJ wouldn't have survived in the league back then.

    I like how JJ argues his points because like Max a long time ago, he’s always very logical with his arguments. But the only downside with his points is he outright ignores any type of flaw in the modern game. Even the slightest flaw. And he also ignores how the increased efficiency in offense is not simply due to players being better than decades ago, but that there’s also a factor of how rules and how games are officiated nowadays which greatly favors the offense. Heck you can even argue load management is also a factor. Load management was never a thing in the past. But now players get much more rest than before. JJ thinks the modern game is 100% better in everything. That’s JJ’s weakness.

Watched those games at the time as a kid, and I think the level of play was higher in the 80's and 90's. But especially high in the mid-late 80's before expansion hit and watered things down. here is a quick example:
      JJ's logic:
      Modern shooters shoot a higher percentage than Bird and make more than Bird in total, so thus MUST be better than Bird.
      👆👆 because the "numbers" say so right?
      JJ's logic mirrored:
      Modern day high school boys run faster and jump farther than Jesse Owens, so they too in turn, according to the "numbers" MUST be better than Jesse Owens right?
      Whenever comparing different eras, we have to consider the other variables:
      1. importance of the 3pt shot directly effects how often it will be practiced and thus how good one can become at it
      2. modern science directly effects performance and longevity
      3. current rules giving modern players more space, more confidence that if missed they arent being benched because the shot was "analytically" the better shot
      etc...
      To simply say the "numbers" say this or that is idiotic and irresponsible.

      Exactly, it really comes down to the way defense is allowed to be played. The 90s and earlier defenders always had a hand or arm resting on defenders. Now it is way easier to get a 3 pointer off. Just because people hit more threes now doesn't mean that they are better

      @@joebidet3606 Funny thing is, you have players that've played in both eras say the exact same things people who've watched both eras in real time..that's then corroborated by the literal changes in the NBA rulebook and quotes from the owners and league officials themselves. The game was more physical in the late 80s-90s. The scores show it. The players say it. The coaches say it. The rule book changes support it. And people who watched both, in real time, noticed the changes too. There is NO such thing as an enforcer today. It is a fact that the role existed for sure until 15-20 years ago. Nobody questions the NFL being less physical now than 15+ years ago when literally the same arguments as the NBA (to a lesser degree) are said. Can't convince an old-head because the old-head isn't crazy and knows what they saw.

      @@gumballwaterson1957 what you’re saying is true if you’re only considering hard fouls = physicality. How about workload, possessions per game, pace of play, and overall level of strength and fitness among players? Lots of these metrics are also physical at its core, and has been corroborated and proven to have detrimental effects to the body over time. When looking at games from previous eras, there is much more standing and waiting around in todays game - which is way more active. Not to mention rule changes such as the introduction of help defense, which poses an entirely different dynamic than pre-2000s ball.
      If the league is so soft nowadays, why are there still so many great players getting severely injured?
