who else is on a Steve Martin binge? This man is just pure genuise and class on all his speech and acts. great definition of entertainer... no politcs no environment no personal agenda being pushed .. amazing
"I took a 9 year old kid to Gladiator and he cried through the entire film... now maybe it was because he didn't know who I was" Can you even get away with jokes like this anymore? Steve Martin can.
@@NorthLVLowRoller It's a kidnapping joke, not a pedo joke. You added the extra steps. And it was clear his Mel joke showed how out of touch he was - that was the point of the joke.
This was the old school Hollywood Oscar monologue, nothing over the top. No sexist, racist, religious sensitive jokes, it was just delightful, DELIGHTFUL. 💃⭐️
Yes. But that's kind of Steve's thing too. Even though he can be quite absurd his jokes are always kind of family friendly somehow. Even when they're not, they still are.
@@annakochkin7693 Billy Crystal was the host for most times between 1990-2005. So just saying that he could only host Oscars and get the company of women only when Billy Crystal not available, otherwise Crystal is chosen over him
"I realize, hosting the Oscar is like making love to a beautiful woman. It is something I only get to do when Billy Crystal is out of the town." 😂😂😂 what a legend
“Please hold your applause until it’s for me.” “I love welcoming the young stars… cause it reminds me of my own death.” “Or making love, ‘are you Steve Martin?’ “ “But it seems like since you got caller ID, you’re never home.” "So I called my friend Giorgio Armani" "Oh, we have 5 hours!" “If Tom wins tonight, between Tom & myself, we will have 3 Best Actor awards!” "Hosting the Oscars... it's something I only get to do when Billy Crystal is out of town." One of the best Oscar openings ever =D
I think this was the final curtain on cinema . Just looking at all the great stars in the audience , many who have passed away , wants me to cry on my own for a while , and hope for the future .
Hahahaha. I love Steve Martin, the joke where he's having dinner with "Tom, Mel, Julia, and Gwyneth" was absolutely hilarious, as was the one on Charlton Heston ("Don't talk to him, he thinks he was in gladiator"). Brilliant!
Haha, Steve Martin is great. His description of the dinner party with "Tom", "Mel", "Gwyneth", and "Julia" had me in stitches. Also loved the line about the trailer giving away too much of the movie and using Dude Where's My Car as an example.
We don't know if he laughed at Steve's other jokes. Not like the camera was on him the whole time. We can say that it took three jokes related to Crowe that finally made him laugh.
Notice how they didn't really laugh the times he called out the true nature of the industry. He was telling the truth and that hits close to home. I thought this was hilarious.
Great name drop on Paul Giamatti, he always struck me as the actor's actor as well. Sometimes performers like that aren't wildly famous but have a list of critical acclaim a mile long.
Steve Martin is so genuinely funny! I mean, I laugh non-stop every single time he's up there on stage... and I see audience laugh so hard too! There may have been better presenters but Steve Martin got to be the funniest to date!
One of the best monologues OMG!!!!!! I Taped this on VHS cause I knew it would be years until I'd get a chance to see it again... I can throw the tape away now :D thanks
This was a bad idea...I am coming down from a cold...and this had me laughing so hard I could not stop coughing and I had an asthma attack....Damn you Martin you!
7:05 “At first I didn't realize that was a movie. Because to me "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" sounds like something Sigfried and Roy doing vacation." I died of laughter!
It is such a precious combination to have a fearless imagination like Steve Martin whilst being such a gentleman at the same time. I wish that more British comedians , nay more British people, would take a leaf out of Steve Martin's book because he is a master and they are not, even if people say that they are.
Love this monologue, but I have to admit that the only reason I rewacth it almost every year is for the pleasure of seeing Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix looking like they're too cool for school. Makes me giggle every time.
This was 10 years ago! It feels like it was just yesterday my family rented Gladiator on DVD and picked up a pizza to watch this sensational movie. I was only 10 back then.
Russell Crowe had just had an affair with Meg Ryan ... years earlier an Australian actor had an affair with his wife, Victoria Tenant , he was bitter as. thats why he made that comment about being on the opposite end of the stage
when he said: "be careful what you say to him because he thinks he was in Gladiator" it cuts to Russel Crowe. who was in it, and the man beside him, Joaquin Phoenix, was in it also. :D
I'm in a cycle of watching award show opening monologues
me too ^^
Same here. Just the oscars for me. Just the comedians I love. Jon Stewart, Chris Rock and now Steve Martin.
Me,too!!
help i cant stop
Matthew Lazo me too
"Please, hold your applause until it's for me."
That sounded like something he just ad-libbed right there.
Watch his Tom Hanks AFI award monologue
who else is on a Steve Martin binge? This man is just pure genuise and class on all his speech and acts. great definition of entertainer... no politcs no environment no personal agenda being pushed .. amazing
Me
Mid 2024 binge... 😝
I could just spend my entire day watching Steve Martin's speeches
+TVB Land what do you mean you "could"? haven't you? i know i have :)
haha indeed I have my friend :)
make it my entire life
TVB Land.....Dude, you really gotta get a life ?
I'm doing that right now lol
Steve is so hilarious. His jokes are casual and yet hilarious, and he remain a calm face that makes them even funnier!
"I took a 9 year old kid to Gladiator and he cried through the entire film... now maybe it was because he didn't know who I was" Can you even get away with jokes like this anymore? Steve Martin can.
Best joke ever
thats classic oldschool filmstar joke , yes he can
Fred Kang he’s saying he kidnapped a kid and brought him to the movie
That's a Pedo joke dude, he also joked about not letting Mel Gibson's friend to his house that helps children? Wth?
@@NorthLVLowRoller It's a kidnapping joke, not a pedo joke. You added the extra steps. And it was clear his Mel joke showed how out of touch he was - that was the point of the joke.
This was seriously my favorite Oscar monologue. Steve's deadpan is ideal.
Old school....the Best
You’re waiting for the next zinger he’s going to throw, but having too much fun to care.
this is one of the funniest of these monologues for sure
So true!
I didnt laugh once but I love Steve Martin so all is well
Steve Martin is such an underrated Oscars host but I really love his humor, one of the best.
Are you watching the same Steve Martin I'm watching? All that stuff is part of his routines, though not necessarily all the time.
Delightfuuulllllllllllllll👍🏼
The Afghanistan joke?
How does this have 450 dislikes? Steve Martin is the man!
what he said about afghanistan
Bl4ckBull3t1
also about gays
...and also about everything else.
The first joke
Cause people are oversensitive.
By FAR, the funniest oscar host ever
Well, have you seen Paul Hogan's......?
Forza Juve
Please - hold your applause until it's for me. Hilarious!
Steve Martin was a very good host.
There goes Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, looking like the cool kids in school....both quite hot in this vid!!
and?
no thanks, i'm good
Okay you're right, just talk about it online sorry for crossing any boundaries
+KK Warslut wtf lol
Joaquin still looks hot tho
This could be the best Oscar monologue ever
If you can get Russell Crowe to smile at a joke, then you've won!
He was drunk.
Because it was the only joke that was worth laughing at.
He’d have to get it. 😉
He did that for a reason, Crowes affair with Quaids wife
I get the impression Crowe didn't laugh because he was never sure if he was the butt of the joke or not.
Steve Martin talked and nobody was mad or angry on him, everything was simple and funny
“... hosting the oscar is like making love to a beautiful woman, it's something I get to do when billy crystal was out of town.”
Best
Dwiki Halla Stolen from Swiss Toni
Brilliant double-burn.
Also from another Steve Martin's speech: "Hosting the Oscars is like making love to a beautiful woman... I guess."
What's the background story behind the joke?
@@annakochkin7693 Billy Crystal was the host for most times between 1990-2005. So just saying that he could only host Oscars and get the company of women only when Billy Crystal not available, otherwise Crystal is chosen over him
The National Treasure himself...
MR. STEVE MARTIN.
Effortless. 👏👏👏
Best Oscar opening ever!!!!
Steve is absolutely genius. This holds up even 20+ years later
This guy is the greatest. his timing and delivery.....and he plays banjo to boot
he really should leave that telephone in his pants 😊
“I was thinking today Chris, that we have both hosted the Oscars before, and this is such an incredible demotion.” Steve Martin 2020
Another one of my favorite hosts! Loved: Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Hugh Jackman and Ellen DeGeneres.
HOLY COW BABY RUSSEL CROWE
Im 14 an my friends cant believe he is my favourite
steve martin is awesome, some people just can't go to sleep without being haters
"Does Russell Crowe remember laughter?" -Robert Plant

Well may be😂
The Charlton Heston line was great.
"I realize, hosting the Oscar is like making love to a beautiful woman. It is something I only get to do when Billy Crystal is out of the town." 😂😂😂
what a legend
on another monologue, he said: hosting the oscar for the second time is like making love to a woman for the second time...I guess. lol
probably one of the better opening acts for the oscars, steve martin is amazing!
“Please hold your applause until it’s for me.”
“I love welcoming the young stars… cause it reminds me of my own death.”
“Or making love, ‘are you Steve Martin?’ “
“But it seems like since you got caller ID, you’re never home.”

Ignatius AW I
We sleep with so many people.
I find him attractive, whatever age he may be.
That look Crowe gives is amazing.
"You just made the list, buddy."

Tam Honks 😍
I was so disheartened to hear more applause for Tom Hanks than Charlton Heston. That man was and still is a legend of the screen.
Hahahaha. I love Steve Martin, the joke where he's having dinner with "Tom, Mel, Julia, and Gwyneth" was absolutely hilarious, as was the one on Charlton Heston ("Don't talk to him, he thinks he was in gladiator"). Brilliant!
Russel Crowe had epic hair back then.
Steve Martin is a comedic genius. Look at his works...amazing.

So many of those jokes you can't make today. Thank God for 2001!

Steve Martin I love you!
I think Steve and Billy should be the only Oscar hosts as long as They Live. Preferably together.
Julia Roberts is such class. Beautiful smile :)
Well they do call her America's sweetheart for a reason. She's that damn beautiful.
She treats people like garbage. Takes more than looks to have class.
Russel Crowe, best poker face ever

lol I love how pissed russell crowe looks every time steve jokes about him.
This is what the Oscars used to be. I don't think we will ever get the same experience again.

Steve Martin is the best hosting these awards, funny, but serious at times
