I think the trend is very different now. Where in his era subtle remarks were the trend now it's more about shock value of some vulgar remarks. Either way both are effective if delivered by talented people.

Billy is so so wonderful. When he begins the medley everytime you just stop what you're doing and listen and laugh. He actually makes it into what an oscar show is suppose to be. Mixing tradition with history & contemporary wit. Nowadays I just go to bed and wake up the next morning to see results on youtube. If Billy hosts I will stay up all night to watch in it's entirety.

The difference between movies back then and now is that I saw all five of the 1993 Best Picture nominees. I didn't see a single one from last year and hadn't heard of most of them.

Wait a minute...an entire monologue WITHOUT any political jokes? Not a single one? No wonder they stopped letting guys like Billy do this. He was actually funny, charismatic and lovable. Can't have that at the Oscars.
