- If you want to install or repair a Modified Bitumen Rubber Membrane, you need to know how to use a torch. One of the problems installing Modified Bitumen Torch Down Rubber is finding a good Torch mechanic. It takes some experience to run a torch. Everyone has their own style and techniques.
There are many ways to do a torch down roof. I have developed my own style. My son has his own style. He likes to round corners and use different torches for different applications. When you do detailed work around vents and drains, it is a good idea to use a smaller torch. I have 8 torches that I carry at all times. I only use one at a time.

What kind of membrane did you guys used for small repair specially on corners???

That looked like the low spot on the roof. Low spots needs special attention.
In California we always use asphalt primer over metal. Does the Karnak you use act as primer?
It is always best ton use primer but the Karnak almost does the same thing. The reason I use Karnak 81 trowel grade is because I smear a thick layer of it on the metal and then after burning the plastic off the back of the membrane press the membrane into the Karnak pushing out any trapped air. This way when the membrane shrinks a little the thick layer of Karnak between the membrane and metal will allow the membrane to slide because it takes at least 6 months to cure. If you do it the conventional way by melting the membrane and then stick it to the metal, chances are good that it will pop lose after several use dur]e to the shrinkage of the membrane and also hardness.

Makes perfect sense. I, personally have never had a problem with the membrane popping off of the metal but can see why the Karnak 81 would be a good alternative to primer and torching directly to the metal. I will have to try it out soon. 👍🏽

The Karnak and the APP are not compatible
Burn the plastic off all you want. I will come back in 6 months and lift the torch down off the Karnak.
The torch down material looks very similar to the old Nord ( had the bears on it ) products I use to make at Nord in Kansas City Kansas 30 years ago
My job there was mainly mixing and test of batches. With running the line as needed.

It appears there's still some moisture under that patch. It's my understanding that trapped moisture is not a good idea to have in your roof assembly...
The way the drip-edge is installed, allows for air to move under the membrane that will dry it out in a few days or in Texas in a few hours
Roof doctor: how would airflow get underneath a monolithic bond where the membrane was installed?

Why is the final over lapping piece above the other two? Chances of water sipping into the joint is high if the over lapping joints not properly done

That was his 1 st time on a roof and I thought just to give him some idea. He is my car mechanic and doesn't have a feel for it. But I also learned on how not to teach. Have to have a different stategy.
Where can a regular guy get the torch set up for his own small repairs? I’ve called several rental places and they do not mess with it.

Most Roofing Supply Places should have torches. ABC Building Supply, Allied Building Supply, Beacon Roofing are the big places in the country that could be close to you.

Laying the torch pointed at the tank and where if it tips it will get the hose . That helper scares me .

Hi Pieter - I will respond in English, although I do speak and wright Afrikaans. I am glad to hear there are South Africans that does Torch Down Roofs. I was not aware that this roofing system being used in other countries besides US and Europe.
Anyway, I have seen videos where a roof technician pull the roll instead of pushing it. I have tried to do that and found it very impractical for several reasons:
1. When the flame hits the roll and surface, it blows back into your face, that's why they use a long control rod to be far away.
2. When you get to the end of the roll, you have to put the long rod down and grab a trowel to control the last 10 inches.
3. If the reason of using the pull methad is because the material you are torching down is to soft to walk on while torching, then you either apply to much heat or the brand type as in Suprema is way too soft. I have torched with Suprema, it is by far the best brand torch down roofing material, but as you say it is too soft.
4. I feel controlling the roll is much harder with a long object than with your feet.
5. Having an additional instrument besides a trowel and a knife, becomes a nuisance.
Yes the Torch-on that i used is a 3mm and i used it as a underlay, finished it with a 4mm SBS membrane. I think we over heat it, thats why we cant walk on it when applying it.
In South Africa we have Concrete flat roofs and we have to bitumen prime the concrete first and then we normally torch a 4mm SBS torch membrane and we are done.
We rarely use a 2ply system. We don’t really have TPO or HDPE systems due to the substrates we work on. Most roofs in South Africa is IBR (Zinc) Corrugated. I have build systems to go over the IBR roofs when they don’t slope enough.

Have you ever had a roof fire ?? There was dry timber everywhere.Couldn't see a fire extinguisher on the roof. If it starts you will never put it out if you don't have an extinguisher.
not in 40 years of roofing. And I only do Torch Down roofing all my life. A few times the siding of a house caught on fire but that was to be expected.
A fire extinguisher will not put out ambers behind siding or places where the fame got deep into the structure.
When the flame gets behind the siding, especially cedar, it starts ambers very fast. Normally you would see smoke and have a chance to put them out.
But, I eventually found a technique that I never had to get that close to torch to the siding.
BTW, pointing a Hot Torch to the flat surface of a roof cant get the roof on fire. If that is what you meant? Even if you try to set a wooden board on fire, it does not happen fast.

@@FlatRoofDoctor yes i have taught alot of guys over the years and it takes along time to be competent with a gas gun and by the way it is not good to heat your propane bottle as the burn mark shows.

It shows how ignorant you are. This technique of roofing has been used since the early '60s. Do you suppose if it was any remotely dangerous, that it would be an acceptable method?

If someone is learning how to use a torch "for the first time" you'd think you would show how to connect it up safely, start it, and shut it down.

Hay "Doctor" ever hear about a steel seam roller? try reading the instructions
Seam rollers are only good if the surface is nice and flat. In many cases the roller will not do the job. That is why I have been using my trowel to press the seams together after heating it up. By far better control.

I'm still Abit concerned about fire. Have you ever had a fire on a roof?
The only time you should worry about fire when using a torch is when you get close to wood siding. I have a technique I use that I never have to torch right to the corner where the roof and the wall meet. Another way to also control or limit the risk of fire, is to have a small torch that can be used for the detail close to siding. I have several size torches.

Yes, I've seen you use trowel grade on edges. Using a piece of membrane as a fire shield seems like a good idea
Very observant. I have several techniques that I use as not to have to bring a flame to close to vinyl or wood siding. As you have mentioned, I use Karnak 81 trowel grade to adhere my membrane to the flashing that is against a wall. If I really have to get my torch close to the siding, then I have a small torch that I have much better control over the amount of flame I need to make the weld.You can also use a metal shield that would shield the siding from the flame.

I wonder if that cup of coffee will be enough to put out a fire. You need a fire extinguisher within 10' of the torch operator at all times per building code and OSHA requirements. If you are going to teach him, teach him right.

Use Americans cannot lay felt. Every video I've seen on UA-cam by an American makes an utter mess of the felt. A real skilled felter like myself can lay felt all day everyday properly without leaving foot prints and scorch marks on the felt. Even on the hottest summer days.
