I just want to thank you for teaching folks your method. The assholes on here who are trashing you are idiots. I'm doing my own roof, and this helped a lot. Keep doing what you're doing...you're helping a lot of people. Best, Tim
Thank you for the feedback. That is what the purpose of this video was for. Beginners.
100%! You explained several important details, like flame management! Thank you for being an educator you are truely helping people.
Wow that's different last time I built a house my roofers torched the first layer right onto the plywood. 🤦♂️
It did seem kind of risky but I'm not a roofer so I wasn't sure if that was the correct way of doing it. I suppose they saved a lot of time and money on nails. Lol
Excellent teachers
Good job. Respect!
Thanks for the lesson. I like that you start with the Nailbase .
This was very cool. Even better then when I did my flat patio roof 23 years ago.
Good channel, keep up the good work.
Good work
Good job bro
Thank You!
Yaxshi zor omad
Nice job 👍 buen jale carnal
Felicitation your video is very explicit and is hard to find
New subscriber, do you have a video on how to torch around roof drainage?
I got ponding on my flat roof. I dont know how old the roof is. We just bought the house last September. Im looking to do it myself small area each day by day. Do you have the material lists.?
How you doing brother Joey here maxx roofing sunnyvale ca .I like your work but we want to spray the asphalt primer on the flashing completely black cover 100 % with heat and cold expansion and contraction that the first place it will fail .keep up the good work.
where do you fine a mini roll of modified bitumen what brand is it thanks
question... due to the fact that there is a drip edge PLUS a narrow roll of bitumen on the edge on top of the rolls you covered the whole roof with, won't there be standing water all around the edges due to edges having more layers than the middle of the roof, after you apply the cap sheet?
Yes, but it won’t leak. Also there won’t be too much standing water because it has open edges, no parapet walls. most likely the water will evaporate next 2 days of sun. All flat roofs have ponding water. You are able to fix this but most homeowners aren’t willing to spend the amount to correct the issue. We as roofers just have to make sure we put on a roof that doesn’t leak. The torch should be completely melted onto the deck. So ponding water should not be an issue unless it is excessive which will be more weight on the roof.
What is the cause of seeing a raised area after installing a torch down roofing on my outside patio
Not getting the underlayment as flat and stretch as possible will cause raised bubbles😊
How long you been torching I've never seen anyone use your method but I guess it works for you. The roof didn't look to bad nice job. I'm a roofer up in Toronto Canada 🇨🇦 we a torch the full roll here. And depending on the torch roll manufacturer we have to be a licensed installer. I've had to take torch courses from the manufacturer a few times each manufacturer is slightly different. Do you guy down in the states have to get licensed. And yes the roof Dr. Is a shoemaker.
I usually torch the full roll when I have a layer of smooth on the bottom. If it is a single layer system, I torch only until the lap. I know it takes longer but I want to make sure my laps are good since it is a single layer.
Hey im looking for torch rolls in canada but it's hard to find them. I'm from germany and currently in bc and all what I can find is this thin "sandpaper" he is using as base.
Where to buy torch rolls here and is these even possible as a private individual :) thanks in advance and nice video
Whats the reason for the Mini Smooth roll?
Bro, width of end overlap min 150mm
Instead of nails can you use staples ???
Where do you get the mini bitumen roll?
Roof Suppliers
How do you clean the bitumen off the trowel?
You heat the shit out of it with the torch
@@migueldefreitas1367 Thanks!
Hey buddy where you located
San Diego
You should get a go pro
Base is to protect against fire the seems aren't nailed right at all
You must be out west somewhere where they don’t get much rain. If you did an install like this anywhere on the eastern seaboard this roof wouldn’t last more than a few years

Why is it that some peeps want to put a fellow tradesman down? - especially one who's put in the effort to make & show a video... If you want to add some helpful education, or comments - it doesn't cost much time & effort to use respectful words - which might make you feel happier & you stand a chance of being heard & then your point can be discussed.
C'mon peep's - we are humans ~ not animals trying to be the top dog 😅
Why not just Karnak the drip, light it on fire and flop the roll onto it?
It doesn’t last as long.
@@roofingfanatics4775 ha just messing with you. That's what the Flat Roof Doctor does...he's intense you should check him out
Haha, I’ve heard about him. I need to check him out. Is he serious or just for show?
@@roofingfanatics4775 he's serious...just extremely old school
@@ericbstudios9807 I’ve been told he is a hack. I always pictured him like a best damn roofer. But I guess whatever works for him.
Oh boy where to begin. I have been in the commercial roofing business for over 40 years. I currently work as a QC daily monitor on commercial construction projects.
Installing a modified bitumen roof on a wood structure is risky. Even with precautions to help in fire protection. First thing wrong ….no fire extinguishers on the roof with the propane torches. Next thing wrong is the side lap of the nailed base sheet is too close to the granular surfaced cap sheet side lap. Proper roofing calls for an offset of side laps of a minimum 12 inches. Base sheet is 36 inches wide, granular cap is 39 and a 1/2 wide. So you will eventually catch up and get a lap on lap condition.
All manufacturers call for a sealant or roof mastic under the metal flanges, not just at the ship laps. Lastly the back wall needs to have a flashing membrane on a vertical rise. Industry minimum is 8 inches but conditions need to be taken into account. Cutting and removing the wood siding, removing and replacing vinyl siding after extending roofing material on the wall and installing a metal counter flashing.
Last thing wrong is the product choice. I am talking about torch grade products. The modified bitumen roof sector has alternatives like cold applied applications. Adhesives that are solvent and odor free. PMA and PMMA liquid systems that use nap rollers and paint brushes to install a very good waterproof and lasting roof. Good luck to all.
Did not read this, too long.
@@roofingfanatics4775 you should read it there are some things should be aware of in the application of this product. If you can’t take 4 minutes to read what I wrote then you don’t care about improving your knowledge.
You lost me when you stated your experience. This is a patio roof. Not commercial.
@@roofingfanatics4775 but it is a commercial product. Certain uniform details need to be carried over to small residential roofs or all you are doing is creating work for another roofing company and tarnishing your reputation. So it right or don’t do it at all my friend. I have watched your video on OSB v. Plywood on a shingle roof and you have made claims that are contrary to printed literature. I have been a union roofer for 8 years, 28 years working for two modified bitumen manufactures. Been directly involved with FM and UL testing. I will chat with you anytime to give you clarification on products and applications of roofing products.
@@roofingfanatics4775 I want to ask you one question? I a wind uplift criteria specification. What is the wind speed in a 1-90 wind uplift specification. #2 what are your wind speeds in California coastal to inland. Is it I-120, I - 150 and what are your relative wind speeds to these pressures?
Amature work
Terrible priming on the drip, why bother?
Lol
You had to find something negative lol
It’s spray can primer I’m guessing
Dudes a noob lol why he torching sideways
Dont know who taught ya.... not good tips.
Sure buddy. Didn’t your mom teach you if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all.
There was numerous issues. I’ve been torching for over 15 years. I appreciate you trying to teach but there are much better procedures. First I would have primed the wood and used a peel and stick. Next you need a fire extinguisher especially on a wood deck. And we definitely don’t call it a flame thrower.
