    James (and this video, in particular) helped me through a serious drum issue that I had been struggling with for years. Several pro drummers had given me pieces of the puzzle, but James put them all together. I have officially broken through a barrier that almost destroyed me. Back in business. Thank you, James!

      Exactly, speed is just a consequence of having the right posture, motions, settings etc... what fascinates me is everything that makes speed possible :)

      Thanx Bill! Yes, explaining such details concepts is very difficult sometimes, especially when the details are what make the difference, but I always suggest to watch the videos, try the exercises, then whatch the videos again, and everytime there will be an information that will become helpful in that moment :)

    That video helped me so much!!! Thank you so much! I'm 13 and with my teacher I only learned playing swing, merengue bossanova etc. But in my freetime and on my YT Channel I cover normally only Powermetal stuff with much double bass. Until I saw your video my maximum velocity was playing Arch Enemy House Of Mirrors. But now after your helpful video I gave more tension to the spring and now (with training) I'm able to get higher speed! That's so cool! Subbed

    It's a symbiotic relationship between the pedal and the player so it only makes sense to adjust the pedal to the human and not the other way around.
    The only way to sense where the perfect tension is is to play relaxed and "listen" to the feedback from the pedal.

  • @CoredusK
    @CoredusK 2 роки тому

    So would you set the spring tension to feel good for each foot?
    Or keep the spring tension for both pedals similar and work the muscles up from there?

  • @mykkot
    @mykkot 5 років тому +1

    Great video and explanation James. Thanks.
    How much will the head tension matter here? If i find my tension of the spring with a certain tension of the head then when i play on another head with another response. Will that make it feel different? I'm thinking the tension of the head might effect the speed of the swing?

    • @viktorbjornstad_drums2nd440
      @viktorbjornstad_drums2nd440 5 років тому +3

      martin karlsson It does but slightly. Check out Erce Arslan on youtube. A lot of drummers say: Your tension on your head should be determined by SOUND mainly. NOT SPEED. It doesn’t effect the feel that much. :)

    • @JamesPayneDrums
      @JamesPayneDrums  5 років тому +2

      Hey man, I agree with what Viktor replied too, it does affect the feeling but not too much! if you relate to the pedal settings they will give you pretty much the same feel on any bass drum tuning (unless the bass drum head is very tight, then it will feel a bit more different)

    Thank you so much for the video. It's very helpful. I have a question that I hope you can help me with. I play heel up and I bury my beater. When my spring is tight, my pedal sometimes makes unwanted hits when I bury the beater. I hope you know what I mean. I hit the bass drum, and then because the tension is high, the pedal has an extra unwanted hit. How do I avoid that?

    • @BurrenSHdrums
      @BurrenSHdrums 10 місяців тому +1

      Burying the beater+ high spring tension= ghost notes. You need to eliminate 1 of those 2 things

    • @boneys3607
      @boneys3607 5 років тому

      the good thing about a longboard (for me at least) is that you get more power (and speed) when you put your foot on half of the pedal. this is also possible with "normal" pedals (like the 600s) of course, but you have a lot less room for your foot (swivel e.g.). on top of that a longer pedal is already useful with big feet ;) in the end it is anyway important that you have an upright posture and height from the stool, so that your legs are not overstrained by the normal movement. most people forget this.

  • @matenorth
    @matenorth 6 років тому

    When you say cheating with leg motion, do you keep your knees a bit high or the heel is resting on the pedal?

    • @JamesPayneDrums
