With watercolor, one key thing I’ve learned is to let the paint dry between layers. It will stop the muddy colors.

Or if you want to have the colours run into each other, pick colours that are adjacent to each other on the colour wheel so they mix nicely. Or, put in another way: don't mix complementary colours. If you want bright colours, avoid yellow+purple, red+green, and blue+orange. And secondary colours (orange, purple, green) always contain a complementary colour of the other two secondary colours, so don't mix those either.

When I need inspiration, I like to take one of my kids' old finger paintings from preschool. I have 6 kids so plenty of inspiration there 😂 I know they were not allowed lways concious of what they were making, so that is the key.
First I try to find shapes or even caricatures of people, animsls, objects, then I try to mimic their art but woth my own color scheme.
That is what these coloring books remind me of.
Btw, your purple blob is clearly a prawn that some bird droopped and is now crashing back to the ocean 😂

They turned out SO PRETTY ohmygosh (;w; ) In the first one I saw a small mountain creek lined with pink and purple flowers. And the illustration looks like an origin story! Like all the creatures and foliage are literally bursting into life. Thank you for making them available, as soon as I saw your video on this last week I was like "I WANT TO DO THIS." It's such a cool concept.
Also, I don't know why it took me so long to watch your videos, but I just started watching you a few weeks ago - and I FREAKING LOVE YOU AND YOUR VIDEOS. You're hilarious and humble, super honest and authentic, you're an incredible artist, and you just seem so real. Even some of the silly things you do I'm like, "Ohmygosh I do that, too," lol. I dunno, your videos themselves are great, but you're also the kind of person where you give others permission to be themselves however they are and however they want to be because you do the same. Thank you Chloe for being such an inspiration

So i'm by no means a professional but I do like to watercolor and I think the difference between watercolor tube paints and inks is that tube paints tend to be pigment based and inks tend to be dye based. So tube paints are typically less vibrant, muted colours (good for landscapes, nature) and inks tend to be more vibrant. To my knowledge dye based inks don't tend to be lightfast though.

Hey Chloe! As a seasoned watercolor artist (basically just means I've painted with watercolors for over 15 years) I've a bit of an advice for you, that might make this coloring reverse production a bit more fun: start with wetting the entire page, not load it with water, but a thin moist surface. Then you drop some choice colors and let them bloom, technical term is wet on wet, that'll give you a blurry effect and set a bit of a base. Once it's dry you can go over it all with some of the same colors, or new colors, that'll give a layer effect and the technique is called wet on dry. Hope you can have more fun with watercolors! 💕

I learned some of these techniques from Lindsay Weirich, but I'm always in need of refreshers and reminders since I don't use watercolors very much and it increases my excitement to try them out when I learn great ideas, tips and tricks, so thank you very much for sharing that info! It makes the creative experience so much nicer when people with more experience share their knowledge and inspires us to try more new things and different media. Thanks again and Happy Creating!

I tried the wet on wet and my colours ran into one another (gave me some pretty hippie vibes!) but I was hoping for more distinct lines. Something that seemed to work better for me was to start with a drop of paint, then load my brush with water and spread it. When dry it gave no hard and soft lines fi follow with the pen

I have done adult coloring for 4-5 years and had just heard about “reverse coloring” so I had to watch this-my first video about it!! I love how this came out. Actually, I’ve seen watercolor artists do this a lot-they start by placing color on the paper, completely randomly, no plan, no care as to what it looks like…and then they go back in and add lines. I’ve never seen a bad piece! I’ll have to try this myself, very soon. That purple blob, I would’ve made into a flying fish! That’s part of the process, make it whimsical, fun, and realistic…or not! 😊

I did the same thing last night! Yours was the last one of several reverse coloring book coloring videos I’ve watched and I was like „I have watercolors, I can do it myself!“ and I hit the same struggles you did! I also used a water tank brush and my colors were far too dark. I’m going to try again, trying to keep my colors much lighter. Though I like the “my little pony sea horse in a fancy dress” creature I created 🤣

In the Art Academy games I remember the lessons that were about painting instead of sketching had us block in the colors first and then get more detailed. I freaking loved those games because they made me feel like a real artist with my results coming out nice! Though the Pokémon and Disney variants are too "comercial" or "corporate" for me. I still want to buy the full version of the Disney Art Academy game but I definitely love the older versions best. Like all the ones that came out before Pokémon Art Academy (though ngl, Pokémon Art Academy is great too when it came to the lessons to paint a Jirachi).

I suspect that the reverse coloring book did this- actual drawings that were then colored, then had the lines erased. Not random blobs. The person using the book doesn't need to find the "right" answer, but there is one. Those imagines just resemble things too closely to not have had line drawings.

Dry ink then finish with a little more water paint. I will dry this and sometimes go in with metallic paint/pencils. White paint pens, silver paint pen or gold paint pen, depending on how my finished art looks. Love doing this, I’ve created dragons, fantasy islands with mythology creatures, hot air balloons having fights with cannons, arrows, let your mind go. Fun way to spend a morning and just relax.

I tried this after watching your first video on it 😂
Honestly at first it looked basically like the blobs on the first page of the colouring book and ended up being a Boquet but I was like nuh and forced some wacky shapes in there when going over with the pen
The second then I was like not gonna think about what I’m making but as I laid down the colour I kept thinking ooh this looks like a cherry tree or ooh that’s a bird now and then I realized, I can’t plan it it won’t be as nice as figuring out what it all is afterwards
So for my third one I just used wet into wet and dimples blobs of watercolor and managed to make soemthing I liked! Thanks for putting up your prints, I actually had an idea for a river moving through for the first one and I really want to print it out and draw that now! I find it a little more freeing and relaxing as an after school break, there’s less to worry about and it gives you something to think about more loosely

On your second picture i saw two coconut trees in the middle of the ocean. The thing to the left was a wave about to crash onto them and the orange splodges were fish

Suggestion: You should rotate your sheet of paper. You'll see very different things!

I've seen some artists actually draw upside down or starting at the bottom and working toward the top. Not even rotating the page, but just sketching the image upside down and the. Turn the page once it's done. They say it makes drawing somehow easier. I think it's about perspective and proportions. I'm not sure exactly how it works to make drawing easier, but I have heard more than one artist say that.
Also, you're right. You do see a lot of other things kinda leap off the page simply by turning the page and viewing it from different angles. It's really neat and cool!
