- Full song with every track here: • Nirvana - Smells like ...
The Mystery Guitar track kicks in at 1:10, I removed the main guitar track, so there is an easier focus on this Second and third layer of guitar tracks.
Okay, so there seems to be a guitar track in Smells like teen spirit, that has been reduced to Approx. 5% (-19 Decibel) of the original volume.
Why did they reduce it to that ?
Why not just take it out when we can't really hear it on the track ?
So many questions, for a new Nirvana mystery ;-)

For such a simple song, hearing the buried guitars makes you realize it wasn't really all that simple.
yup that's why many can imitate the main riffs of a lot of their songs but none can REPLICATE.. that and the players "feel"
Have you ever heard all the hidden layers in Alice In Chain's songs? It would take 5 guitar players to replicate live
Oh my god yes and 5 Jerry Cantrell's at that. down in a hole has 4 guitar tracks i believe, they're a little more noticeable and up front though.
There are so many guitar parts in any given alice in chains song
they're both so incredible (to me) that it'd be like picking only food or water.. AIC especially I loved them way before I really knew the whole Nirvana catalog
The "secret guitar" you can hear is a layer to add depth to the main guitar sound you hear on the record. If you have seen the numerous Nirvana documentaries the producer of nevermind explains they used around three or four layers to add a deeper, grungier sound
But it is far too low to be audible
Bluu Oyster Unless you've worked in a studio as an engineer you can't know that. Mike is absolutely right - multiple layers of guitar tracks, which were used throughout this album - add to the richness and depth of the sound. It doesn't need to be 'audible' in the sense that you're thinking of. It just needs to color the overall sound a bit.
Bluu Oyster pretty much what Brian Snyder said. i made an okay song once... it was dark, sexual, and scary. i made multiple layers of vocals that you can actually hear progress in the song, but one of the vocal tracks i had completely forgotten about for like 2-3 years that was put in there simply to add depth... i looked at the song again (luckily before evvvvverything was deleted off my comp) and i listened to that vocal track and was creeped the hell out. you couldn't even hear it in the song itself, but with everything else muted it became something much different.
the way that song was made in general just scares me, cuz a sort of thing happened on the second half that wasn't really under my control made the song that much creepier, which is what i was aiming for anyways but i was just surprised it happened. it was a happy accident.
Metallica has like 100 over dubs on Battery of gtr. It does add to a Wall of Sound yer not suppose to hear but sense it in the over all mix, many Kick Drums has a test tone added to the sub freq of the Kick Drum lots of tricks to get that "Sound". Listen to Andy Wallace next to Butch Vigs mix you can hear what I'm talking about. Wallace is much more Compressed EQ'd & "Polished" sounding while Vigs sound more Natural.
Bluu Oyster It doesn't matter of you can't hear it, you will still feel it. I just came from studio and we did stuff like this a lot. Was interesting to notice how something you can not hear still makes the song worse if you take it away.
Kurt: *clears his throat then proceeds to moan*
I know, confuses me
Lukey Dukey Hi algorithm buddy

Is this the part that is around 1:47?
I'm a mixing and recording engineer, and all the people here saying the guitar track isn't there in the album version obviously have no idea what they are talking about. Honestly, you would be hard pressed to find a song that is professionally recorded and mixed that DOESN'T employ this sort of technique ALL OVER THE TRACK. It's what we get paid to do, and why so many bedroom producers can't seem to get that "radio quality" even though it sounds good. There are little psycho-acoustic gems all over which add depth to the mix so 1) the song sounds larger than life and 2) there aren't giant gaps in the frequency spectrum. With a band like Nirvana, where you've got only a drum kit, bass guitar, and an electric guitar, there is a LOT of space to be filled. A lot of times, we will take a guitar and use a process called re-amping, which is where you record the guitar BEFORE the amplifier, then route it into the amplifier the band uses to record that sound as well. Once it comes time to put it all together, that "clean" track can be played back into a different amplifier, creating a different sound. When you consider that we get 3-4 GOOD takes for each part, the depth that YOU usually here is take 1 through amp 1, panned mostly to the left; take 2 through amp 1, panned mostly to the right; take 3 through amp 2 panned mostly to the right, take 4 through amp 3, panned mostly to the left. But the parts that are not the MAIN part are turned down fairly low.
This 'hidden" track was probably in the background of the sound, and you won't hear it if you are looking for it. With things like this and vocal reverb, that's exactly how I know when I have the levels set right... I can't hear it when it's there, but when I mute the track, everyone in the room can hear that something is missing. Believe me, it's on every single song you've heard in the last 20 years. Even though Kurt didn't want his music appealing to the masses, someone was putting their name on it, and probably made a career out of mixing this song. If you come to get it professionally mixed, this is what we do. If you don't want that, feel free to do it yourself. I get the artist/band's input and work toward bringing their vision to life, but their input stops at creativity. If you don't want me to change it up or make it sound over-produced, I won't. But I'm going to make it sound good by any means necessary. If you want another example of how hidden tracks are snuck into this song that you never heard, carefully listen to the "Smells Like Teen Spirit isolated vocal track, vocals only" video here on UA-cam. You never heard all that reverb on his voice in the original album either, but listen to how it sounds like he's in a giant room. He's not, that's reverb, and that's why it's on the end of some lines, trailing off into the silence, and completely non existent at the ends of others. Like I said, we do this all over the track to trick your mind into staying focused on the song. No two measures of any song are the same, even the choruses have slight variations that you can't hear that keep your brain locked into them.
this post was amazing... and actually sums up exactly why nevermind cant do it for me like the live versions do
chilldude30 Based Gabed?! \0/
I heard that Reverb on his voice since day one when I was about 10 years old. The only way to know if this is legit is to have the original multitracks. If these were in the original recording, better believe they were put on mute. And saying you need to fill gaps is true to an extent but not how you want to push it. Sure, Vig was looking to produce a pop album and that's exactly what he did, but the successor which Albini masterfully crafted as a larger than life album did not contain the bullshit. The artist didn't stop with input, causing a few of the singles to be pushed to Litt for a more pop sound similar to Nevermind. Record executives couldn't stand the rawness, and now it is remembered for its greatness. All you need is the right ear, a good set of monitors, and you can pick apart anything you want.
I'm a mixer as well of my own music (non professional of course) and non profit. But you just helped me learn something new about mixing my friend. What makes my music (I noticed the band that did this the most was pantera) Was they would duel track there stuff we're it sounded like 2 guitars at once. For anyone who doesn't know what I mean, you basically duplicate the track and pan one right and one left and then you slide one just a little tiny bit back or foward. Then I would have thought bass in the middle but I always wondered why my music was not coming "Radio Quality" or I guess mote full and wholesome. I also noticed the heavy use of the duel tracking Kurts voice in the song with some added reverb to fill in those empty spaces like you said. But I just want to say thanks for the help on the mixing topic man:)
Rob Bader I wonder how people can even think this is fake. It sounds like the same guitar and the quality level also equals the studio recordings.
what's with Kurt clearing his throat at 1:45
There's a doc on UA-cam somewhere where Butch Vig talks about how Kurt had been congested throughout the recording.
+Mike Hawk haha your name
Jahad Akbar Woah calm down, people don't tend to fill their recordings with themselves clearing their throats. Sure they do it when they sing but it is a bit weird to put or even leave it on the recording there's just no need. That's probably the point of the original comment, not to make fun of him for doing it.
Lol
I know when my band was in the studio we opted to keep everything in from string buzz and finger slide to throat clearing and random cough. Some bands just like the feel of it knowing that stuff isnt cut up and out gives it a raw feeling like its real music. I still think thats what seperates good bands from great bands in my opinion. I personally like sublime and if you pan in most songs you can get full conversations used to fill out a song.
The throat clearing at 1:45 is very grunge. Thanks for sharing this
2:56 its main riff but better....
im not sure, but i guess kurt is playing that part as intro on reading 1992. and this riff is also in 'more than a feeling' by boston, krist sings it :D
ua-cam.com/video/R3XIGon2RjY/v-deo.html
could be wrong tho
It's the main riff of this song but less cleaned up
@@llennord It's just a distorted version of the riff, just like in the chorus. Nothing special
@@LoekTheKing It doesn't have the "hidden" guitar track, and it's only played by one guitar with no chorus. Just a simple distorted guitar. It's pretty special compared to everything else.
@@featheryfemme Oh yeah, it doesn't have the hidden guitar. You're right.
This is one of the reasons why Nevermind sounds so deep and polished, it's a real radio album. I love it.
Almost 30 years on and I'm still discovering amazing things about this song.

The "secret guitar" you can hear is a layer to add depth to the main guitar sound you hear on the record. If you have seen the numerous Nirvana documentaries the producer of nevermind explains they used around three or four layers to add a deeper, grungier sound
Too bad this is fake as fuck. The uploader doesn't list a source, it's not on the available multitrack stems of the song, no one involved has talked about it despite the entire album being dissected repeatedly. OP added the guitar himself; it's fake.
@@runnersdialzero1244 it is approved by a professional of song mixing, though...
Wtf 1990 was 30 years ago. Man time really flies by
It's the greatest song ever written...well this and Hey Jude by the Beatles
I always thought there was another guitar layer on this track, guitars sounds way too full (in a good way) in the chorus. Glad you solved the mystery, thanks!
+José Aquino like your profile pic, new doge angle :3
It truly explains why covers of the song never sound quite right musically.
yes and no, most people don't even get to play the main riff with the right technique. Kurt plays with so many strokes, I consider this almost a funk riff :D
Fuck UA-cam Yeah even the live versions don't have the same weird psychedelic feeling, they sound more raw, but the studio one is somehow very distinct.
I was about to comment it’s the bass till I read the description
Same here
Exactly
But you commented "it's the bass" anyways hehe
Same
It’s actually the drums. Grohl is a genius. The groove is everything.
This genuinely increases my appreciation for this track.
in an interview the guy who produced Nevermind said that he would get Kurt to redo the guitar parts (by pretending that something went wrong each time or that he wanted to record it differently) so that there were multiple layers of guitar on the tracks
It was the vocals he was talking about, not the guitars. Butch Vig said that on the Nevermind DVD that came out in like 2005.
No hes right. It WAS the guitar part. Even sighting to cobain at the time "[John] Lennon did it"
John Lennon didn't double track guitars, he double tracked vocals. The Beatles famously invented double tracked vocals.
TheZombieJC yes but that's NOT what he said to cobain. Read the book.
Nope, you're thinking of a different quote. Butch Vig was talking about Drain You when he was talking about tricking Cobain into doing multiple guitar takes. He wouldn't have mentioned John Lennon then, because The Beatles didn't double track guitars. They overdubbed guitar parts, but they didn't double unison guitar parts like Butch Vig had Kurt do.

Incredible. I always knew the song had this haunted almost frightening feel to it, but I could never recreate it when I play it on my own. Now I understand why.

I actually prefer this version, it's like listening to the song again for the first time
It gives a new perspective into the less polished parts of the song. It almost feels more genuine and fresh
@@yosevitsoto6579 totally, also I like the fact that the song sounds emptier like this. And the bass and back voices get more attention
I don't know if I prefer this.. But yes, it's like hearing it again for the first time
Yeah I was listening to this for the first time wondering what if this guitar was the lead riff? Lol
Stumbled across this video during a brief, nostalgic few days of revisiting Nirvana. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Butch, Recording with Steve Albini (and also attending a yearly party he throws,) and have met and spoken with Dave Grohl fairly in-depth. He and the rest of his crew in the Foo Fighters chose one of my hometown friend’s bands to join them on tour (Mariachi El Bronx.) Anyhow, The audio in this video is clearly made up of the dry tracks from the Sound City sessions. Vig and other engineers have released the session files to friends and there are quite a few people out there who have them in ProTools form, who can isolate any tracks they wish to make videos like this. Vig himself released several videos where he describes the production of Nevermind, and isolates certain tracks to show you the layers and discuss his experience working with Nirvana. A lot of people don’t realize, however, that Nirvana members were not pleased with Vig’s mixes of the songs he tracked for them. It was Andy Wallace who mixed the album. He ran a lot of the tracks through outboard gear, including stereo outboard gear for mono guitar tracks. The drum tracks you hear in this video are also missing the parallel compression he added that gave it that huge sound we hear on the album. He would’ve removed the clearing of the voice sound you hear during mixing as well while cleaning up the tracks. So, there you have it. The real man to ask about any of this would be Andy Wallace, and he is the one party involved who I’ve never met. Regarding the hidden guitar track you hear in this video, it was added as a sustaining guitar layer, to detract from the repetitive staccato nature of the primary power-chord riff, in order to help the vocals sit better in the mix during the choruses.
My cousin recently uncovered all the secret guitar parts on his own. He has always agreed with Kurt in that the song is a joke, but he's starting to change his mind when seeing how much effort truly went into it. And that begs the question, why did Kurt hate it so much? He said he didn't like how popular it got because it was a joke, but it clearly wasnt one. And thus, the mystery that was Kurt cobain still remains unsolved.
He definitely enjoyed playing the song earlier on, and definitely cared about the development of the song, he changed the lyrics around a few times. I believe that he began to hate the song because the jock types that once bullied him, etc, began showing up to the shows, and all people wanted to hear was Teen spirit, which made him feel like his other songs were being overshadowed by it. I really think he didn't think the song would get as big as it did and felt it wasn't his best work despite people wanting to hear that song over the others. Makes sense honestly, it would piss me off too.
There's a passage in Mark Lanegans book that gives insight. Basically the song was everywhere. Iirc they were in a motel room when the song came on, so kurt out of frustration shuts it off. He then goes to open a window and the 1st thing he hears is a car outside passing by with Teen Spirit blaring. I think he really liked the song at 1st, I mean they chose it to open their major label debut, but probably just freaked him out hearing it so much.
he liked drain you way more and wished it would've been their "big break" song instead
2:58 is so f*cking strong
Sounds AWSSOME
There's no mystery here, it's not compulsory to mix all tracks to maximum volume or zero! Often a track will be added a lower volume just to subtly add colouration to the guitars you can clearly hear. This has presumably been added to give a little shimmer to the sound without reducing the power of the main heavy guitar.
You typically would not put a guitar layer in at -19db
Probably just to modulate the other guitar tracks
You make it sound like it was a conspiracy. Of course there is no mystery lol.
You typically would not put a guitar layer in at -19db
Why not? Read the long post above, it's massively common to layer parts when you make a record. Everything can't be at the same volume!
it's a mystery because it's never been acknowledged or tabbed
Damn dude this guitar track is adding to the song an aggressive/neurotic tone. Isolated you can really hear it. Thanks for showing
Wow, this was really cool to hear isolated. Its true that you cant really notice it in the full version, but this is what gives a song its “fullness” as pointed out by others. This could also be why so many songs by different artists sound drastically different live compared to the studio version.
if your trying to hear this in the official song this guitar track boosts in volume in the end at the ”a denial” part try listening to it there, its very easy to hear it its pretty much the same volume as the main riff there.
Kurt clearing his throat made me giggle X3
it scared the crap out of me.. lol
same.
He was relaxing his voice.
Dude, how the hell do you do that? The results are incredible man! I can't even begin to imagine how you would isolate those sounds in a full mix... even reversing the middle or sides... it's so damn clean...
I know this is an old old comment, but I think this was actually taken from a music rhythm video game, Rock Band 2. It was released as downloadable content on that game. The games use the actual stems to give the impression you’re playing a real instrument when you miss notes in-game by muting the track of whatever instrument you’re playing. This is what it would sound like if you chose (lead) guitar and missed all of the notes.
Been reading the discussion, I'm pretty sure this is Kurt playing this part, listen at 4:22, sounds like Kurt's oddball off-the-cuff half-stepping it up to add some dissonance. Also, still sounds like Stratocaster going through a DS-1 and a Small Clone at high warble rate.As for how and why this could have happened....
They were probably recording the tracks and someone in the studio felt something was missing, could have been Kurt/Krist/Dave, could have been Butch (sometimes producers make these kind of suggestions too), so could have been Kurt made it up off-the-cuff wanting it there, or Butch might have suggested he come up with some new part (happened before to me in the studio) to add a little "something more" to it to flesh out the sonic picture more (and probably used his Beatles reference to do it), or maybe Kurt was screwing with the arrangement one day and thought to throw this on there, and when it did not work out front, they decided to slip it out back as one of those things that's not all that audiable but makes a big difference. Just my thoughts on it.
Or maybe Kurt just did the chord overdub for the solo and fiddled around the chorus and thought this is pretty cool
Kurt didn't record with a strat.
@@vita1ogy. He did, at least "endless nameless".
@@lionels4800 I didn't know that.

So great to hear Kurt in the studio. As a musician we will often drop in different sounds be it from guitar’s, bass, vocals to just noises of things we like. Smashed bottles slamming doors and then they just get mixed into the song.

i was about to comment "isn't this just the bassline?"
Holy shit I listened to smells like teen spirit on acid and swore I heard some kind of sound distortion during the chorus. I thought it was my mind playing tricks on me but it's actually a guitar.
Just another realization that acid makes you see things clearer! It's the everyday life that is blurry and tricks our minds! Man, I miss my stoner years... "turn up the signal, wipe out the noise" (Peter Gabriel) :)
yea man, i havent done acid yet but i hunt for wild cubensis from time to time. music is amazing when tripping.
this deserves to be the pinned comment
Trying to find some ;)
I’ve had a lot of similar experiences on acid. It’s like a completely different album than you thought you out on.
If you listen to the last 30 or so seconds of the actual song (a denial), especially on the Butch Vig mix, you can really hear this hidden track. So many cool nuances that makes these mfs so good
This hidden track was only used during the final “a denial” section of the song. You can hear it fade in at the 4:31 mark on the album version.
Kurt is playing the same 2 notes as the verses, C,F as a chord. Play C on the 5th fret of the 3rd string (G) and F on the 6th fret of the 2nd string (B). Slide that same shape from the 5th fret, down a whole step to the 3rd fret, down another whole step to the 1st fret, and then down a half step (the 3rd string will ring open). For the part ending the verses/leading into the solo, start at the 5th fret and slide a half step up to the 6th fret with that shape. Play along with this recording to experiment and get the timing right.
Makes sense - I was switching back and forth between this video and the song to try to hear the hidden track, and as you stated, it only shows up in the outro - once you know it's there you'll never unhear it
I totally can hear it on that last part. Crazy
if i had to take a guess its on the other parts of the song as well, likely just quieter. but idk
I remembered the last part of the song and I heard it and was like WOAH
out of all the wide range of nirvana stuff my tiny brain knows
i never heard this until a instrumental right now and a comment about a hidden guitar track and here it is. crazy
Never heard it. Mind blowing
It's much louder on the "A denial!" section. Now I can CLEARLY hear it but only in this section. In the first and in the second chorus it's either not there or MUCH lower in volume. Whoa, anyway it's really cool. But really, check it out, it's clearly audible in the "A denial!" section at the end of the song, I never heard it even there though. I'm stunned ;)
It makes the “a denial” bit more melodic
I KNEW THERE WAS AN EXTRA GUITAR SOMEWHERE IN THIS SONG

Sounds eerie. I love it.
Rob has it 100%. This album is amazing not only for how it sounds, but also because it was in the last era of artists recording on tape.. now it is all digital... but then, recording on tape was the norm, and it was expensive, but you had a hard copy, not a hard drive.. one guitar would not have given the power of the chorus that this song gave... and the frequency spectrum is important.. When I record guitars, I do the same guitar part a few times, and I EQ them in different spectrums, so individually they sound tinny, or bassy... but in the mix all together they roar.. but it is the sum of all parts.. and also, I too now use digital, and it makes it so much easier, but, you do not have a hard copy of your mix... you have a hard drive.. and hard drives die.. this is my only argument in the analogue v digital debate.
+Jason Newman lol.... all this shit was recorded onto magnetic tape, dude. Hard drives are also magnetic storage devices.
True, but have you ever put a cassette or record on the player, and it just doenst work? The problem is most likely the player, not the Cassette or record. I have had three hard drives fail, and they were backed up, but I lost two terabytes of data. I have never had a complete failure from using tape as the medium.
I have boxes of master tapes that are 25 years old that all work. I have not had a hard drive last more than a couple of years.
Its not the analogue v digital argument I have its way easier to record digital by far. You just have to use a computer, and store it on a hard drive in digital. Storing masters on tape is not in a digital format. It is just magnetic filings stuck on plastic that get magnetized. So short of your natural disaster or a giant magnet, tape if looked after will out live any hard drive out there now.
Im sure that someone will make a lifetime guarantee hard drive one day, but it will be expensive. Until then it is backing up and uploading to the cloud and I still dont feel safe that it will last the tests of time like tape has.
+Jason Newman I agree with you in general, but will note that you can have your projects automatically backed up to a cloud server in case of hard drive failure. I don't bother myself :P
What? You're going on and on about how important it was that the album was recorded to tape when it really doesn't matter. There are plenty of gimmicky, cold-sounding analog recordings just as there are plenty of great, "warm"-sounding digital recordings. P.S. Vinyl is not superior to digital formats.
I could always hear elements of this hidden track on the song, especially with decent speakers. Just metallic nuances that shine through and add some more depth to the sound. While I prefer In Utero and Bleach, there's no denying that this album has superb production. Way ahead of it's time. Dynamic and supersonic, yet clean and sleak.
Its so funny that you only hear this chime in the background if you know about it.
this layer just got me a goose bumps and I got another view on this song, amazing!!
Exactly what i thought, it is something new and beautiful when you seperate the guitar-tracks like this, but together it sounds muddy and your brain can't figure out what to listen to really.

This guitar track being not completely cut out but hiding there adds another melodic layer to the recording and creates a less dry/punky sound, being more catchy to the non-punk ear without anyone noticing it. Pro audio engineers and producers surely know their thing.
Yeah and the first one was probably one of the longest sentences I wrote in English lol
The guitar part sounds inspired by Keith Levene of Public Image Ltd. In fact, this version without the other guitars has a PiL vibe to it.
I completely agree and I am glad that you mention PiL here. They need far more recognition as they influenced countless artists including Cobain. Good work 👍
It’s subtle octave harmonizing via layering. Really handy and clever. It’s what makes the guitar sound so beefy or “full” for sure. Just the power chords on their own wouldn’t cut it.
Something I learned from hearing some professionals talking about recording is that many times they do this kind of things during the recording so the in the record it gives something "special" or something else that you wouldnt get if you play it live. Some sounds, guitar/bass/drum/voice settings are sometimes played and recorded twise with different guitars/bass/drum sets/microphones,etc and then mixed up.
its called filling out the track....
If a band has 3 guitarists, one of them usually just plays noise/fuzz that sounds weird by itself but when you combine it with the main guitar it adds fullness to the overall sound. Foo fighters does stuff like this live, too.
Tbh I can hear how it’d add to the crazy feeling the chorus gives.
Many, MANY songs use studio tricks like this to form layers of sound that all work together to create what you hear. “Barely audible” tracks like this can add so much to a mix that you don’t even realize, but if they were to be removed after you’ve already heard a song with them, you’d likely notice that something sounds a little off.
Yoo I knew I heard something different I thought I was hearing things cause of being stoned
You don't?? You should it's great!
timay618 you should have been around in the 90s doing drugs and listening to hits month after month good times
Drugs are bad.
Robert Pearson I grew up idolizing Kurt
shaun patrick when he died it really effected me
You can hear it in the original song but only barely. I have a pretty good hear for music and even I found it extremely difficult, only when listening to the instrumental did I hear a snippet of it.
Bruno Silva This comment almost made me a Jill Sandwich...
Yet Another Shitty Bassist Nice reference :v
Bruno Silva ya, its one of those things that you can really only notice if it was taken out. These little parts make up the WHOLE.
Bruno Silva You can hear a microsecond of it right before the solo
Johny when i come to think about it I know why it's there and you can hear it if you listen
Yes ofcourse, but the track has been reduced to a level that is so low, it's not really hearable :P
Hello
People are obviously very ignorant of recording/mixing if they think that every track should be "audible".
Layers on top of layers on top of layers have been used since the creation of multiple tracks. It's a soundscape....subliminal....etc..
I love his little grunt in the middle.
feel good
dr. Light the cyborg wolf you know it
When i was in high school two years ago i did rock studies and this is the way our group had to play it. And i was the one with the guitar, and doing the instrumental guitar solo still remember how to play it
such a deep and dark song enigmatic too
If you want to hear it with just one or two guitars, listen to them live. The mix is part of what Nirvana albums special imo.
I've listened to a lot of Nirvana, and admittedly this sounds (a) like it was there on the recording, and (b) like it was played by Kurt, or someone he accepted to play on his record. From what I can tell, the F is a higher F, and descends, while the main rhythm is ascending. This is the same idea as the guitar and bass often do in other Nirvana songs, like the Lithium verse on this album, or the Dive chorus.
The "hey/way" part also sounds like it's played on the higher F is and is all slidey and bendy. Also trademark Cobain to add feeling.
If this isn't real, then it's fully got me convinced and I can usually tell a fake.
Hearing this really makes me wonder, why didn't Cobain try more of this kind of thing with Pat Smear in the band? The sound is so much more complex and orchestral, in a really good way. And writing that then makes me think, this is what appeared on Unplugged with the Cello, or the Accordion.
Last blasphemous thought... it's sounds like the riff from Blur, Song 2. Ha!
Cameron Pollock 1.) that is absolutely, without a doubt Kurt playing a nicely arranged 2nd harmony guitar part to add depth and color to the chorus. 2.) Blur Song #2 was released years after Smells Like Teen Spirit. Blasphemy averted!!
Well he ripped that riff from Boston haha believe it or now just listen to More Than a Feeling & Teen Spirit same Gtr part phrased differently.
Watchman4u there's a live recording of some Nirvana show where they do the into to Smells Like Teen Spirit and then turn it into some really crappy More Than A Feeling cover
It's real simple, the normal x-x-x-5-6-x you pick in the chorus, you strum that, slide down to 3-4-x then slide down to 1-2-x and then do a flick to 0-1-x once (sort of a hammer on, pull off mixed together) and then flick back to 1-2-x and repeat back at 5-6-x, now for the break you go 5-6-x slide up to 6-7-x, then mute, and then slide from 5-6-x to 3-4-x. So just its an easy pattern where you can just slide around with your index and middle finger.
hmmm, this clears up the effects pedal on the song now. it always seemed for the chorus hes used the same effect pedal that was on the solo. no, it was this in the backround that made the sound the way it was. all that from a little exploring
1:10 Hidden guitar begins!
I listened to this when I was sleep deprived and high on weed at 3am and it scared the shit out of me
A bit late to answer your question but in production producers will sometimes stack guitar takes to big it a bigger sound. If you record a band live or just one track of each instrument start to finish, you don’t have enough colors to paint your picture. Mixing and mastering is an art and there are many different methods to build emphasis and a huge sound and guitar layering is pretty commonplace.
How does the distortion sound so crunchy during the solo? :

This is the magic "thing" about the chorus! It's why the live versions never quite cut through emotionally.
1:42 sounds like Ferris bueller about to call in sick
Actually, even you can't truly hear it, you may "feel" it. That's how many sound effects used by sound engineers work. Some effects are there not to be perceived openly but drift into the subconcious somehow.
surely even kurt would not know of the existence of this hidden layer...
But he was probably the one who put it there ?
He recorded it....
No, he didn't put it there because this is fake.
Remus McLoud k
@@AbsoluteAbsurd Fake as fuck.
This absolutely is the real deal; no question. It’s the Rock Band DLC version (that hidden riff is on the “extras” track ). The Guitar Hero DLC version doesn’t have it separated out- it’s buried on the “guitar” track amongst the multiple other layered guitars.
That thumbnail makes me wanna cry :'(
That's crazy... A bunch of chaotic stuff. He certainly was a genius
Why the fuck did anyone give this video a thumbs down?
A lot of pathetic people who liked pearl jam better. lol BIG TIME HATERS.
I am a big fan of the two bands. There's no competition. Why not love 1000000 bands at the same time? :-)
Reading this now, I can see why my abrasive tone and choice of words could be sort of misinterpreted: In the moment I wrote it, I was a bit scandalized as to why anyone would give a dislike to a video as innocuous and banal as is this one.
dont apologize >< xD
WOAH I NEED THAT AMP THE MAIN RIFF AT THE BRIDGE SOUNDS SO GOOD WITH THAT TONE
just change the vocals and it could totally be an offspring song
Instead of a 'hello hello' chorus we'd have a 'woah-way-oh' one.
It sounds just like gone away
But this song was released before Offspring first album come out
tchaco lynma no it was not
Iron Head-Ed you have the right to be wrong ofc
1:45
I guess he had a very nice time clearing his throat.
I knew there was something else going on. When I heard bands cover this song, I always felt there was something missing.
shut it
I know the purpose of this video is the guitar track but damn, his vocals are even more mesmerizing with the other guitar tracks stripped away. My ears are begging for more.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems like Butch Vig would've mentioned this in the Classic Albums for Nevermind.
Still a little skeptical on this. Would love to see Butch weigh in on this.
You can definitely hear it in the "a denial" section (check out the Butch Vig mix, it's clearer there)
25 years since I heard this. Still breaks my heart. I guess thats the acid test of whether or not it was truth..
Wow, never would of imagined that was buried under that, I'll listen out for it next time
I don't know how but I heard this riff in the original music video hahah
@@hiems9523 yeah? You must have a good ear for it, never ever noticed it before
@@benmcnamara5572 same I still can't hear it that easily even now that u know of it
@@LHoriginal yeah its crazy dude, I'd like to hear Buch Vig talk about it and why it's there
@@benmcnamara5572 yeah
Sometimes these quiet tracks create mood/a feeling compared to when muted. Not necessarily something you can hear obviously, but something you feel subtly. Some of my favourite things about certain songs is their quieter layers.
How many mtf times I have to say. I know. What this. Carries. And am. G9odnnto pay the price. Vutjxb nandnn UN n. Deceptnm sucier3😅😅😅
the beginning of the hidden riff kinda sounds like song 2 lol
Was just about to ignorantly comment that I always hear it, then "it"kicks in at the described time. Yeah, first time consciously hearing that. Thanks. Now I know another reason why productions seemed to sound "deeper" back then.
it's not a hidden track at all. It's another guitar part to add some harmonics in the midrange which the original distorted guitars lacked. It's easier to hear on Butch Vigs mixdown as he does a more live sounding mix. In the bridges it's quite audible anyways even on the original recording
You can definitely hear it in Butch Vig's mix during the "a denial" part
it goes with the melody, helps make the harmonies stronger
These ,almost unnoticeable things, gives music extra dimensions.....you know ,bass ,percussions ,additional tracks ,harmonies...
part of Kurt's genius was his ability to project tbe image of a sloppy off the cuff punk style that was delivered with absolute harmonic knowledge snd control. His guitar solos are great evidence of this. on a first pass listen they sound like hes coloring outside the lines but he knew just where those lines were. Often his vocal line was the completing harmonic of the chord struxture of the composition.
Do you think he knew what he was doing musically or that he just thought it sounded cool? Haha
The dissonance of that D over the F root at 4:11 is superb - not as noticeable in the other choruses.
Who heard right Before the second verse a cough? I did.
+Speedy Yo / The Riff Yeah it's pretty loud, i don't think anyone missed it.
Hector Osbert LOL. I was going to comment that.
Anthony Skidmark what?
Anthony Skidmark oh.
I wanna say this part in itself is double/triple tracked (even at a low volume)
just based off the fact occasionally hearing this you can hear kurt go completely off track on one of the takes (i.e the bend panned right at 1:22, and the complete chord change on one track at 4:24)
i forget how gorgeous the bass is.
Novoselic slaughters it here even if it’s a simple bass line
so if anybody is wondering how the little riff is played you're basically going down the chords are F-Eb-C#-C starting from the eighth fret of the A string going down. yes i did this by ear.
so scary
such a deep and dark song enigmatic too
why
its almost like the theme of 28 days later, innit?
O_o
This track blows my mind.
